Your talents and gifts are needed! Doug Box will present the inside scoop, with photos, of the untold tale of what life was really like on the Box Ranch, the original Southfork Ranch in the Dallas TV series. From riches and cutting horses to Frank Gifford and Monday night football, Cattle Baron's Ball, television stars, the inside trade that financed the ranch and the blazing fire that destroyed the house and the story about the partial rebuild - it's all in his book. “This book is perfect reality summer reading,” Doug said. “It reveals the real story, the untold tale of what life was really like on the Box Ranch (known today as the Brinkmann Ranch).” In anec- dotes both sweet and bitter, the youngest Box son remembers what it was like to grow up as a member of Texas royalty; if Frisco had a “first family,” the Boxes were it. Doug's father was the storied patriarch and entrepreneur Cloyce K. Box, thought by many to be the inspiration for Dallas' J. R. Ewing. Doug's was a one-of-a-kind childhood replete with professional athletes, television crews, celebrities, Miss America pageants, and all the glitz and glamour of southern grandeur. The house caught fire in 1987 and was being rebuilt in 1993, when Cloyce suffered the heart attack that killed him. The partially rebuilt house's steel frame stands today as it was then, at the northeast intersection of Main Street and Preston Road in Frisco. Ultimately, a downturn in the Texas economy would come back to haunt the Box family, leading to the eventual sale of Doug's beloved horse, Cutter Frisco, and ulti- mately the ranch itself. Cutter Frisco is a powerful retelling of the end of an era, with forty photographs and a eulogy written by Frank Gifford, which he read at Cloyce's funeral. Kathy Lee Gifford also sang a solo of "He Giveth Me Grace.” In this book, Doug beautifully captures those early years of magnificence and magic- albeit a magnificence and magic not meant to last.

“It reveals the real story, the untold tale of what life was really like on the Box Ranch (known today as the Brinkmann Ranch).” In anec-dotes both sweet and bitter, the youngest Box son remembers what it was like to grow up as a member of Texas royalty; if Frisco had a “first family,” the Boxes were it.

Doug's father was the storied patriarch and entrepreneur Cloyce K. Box, thought by many to be the inspiration for Dallas' J. R. Ewing. Doug's was a one-of-a-kind childhood replete with professional athletes, television crews, celebrities, Miss America

pageants, and all the glitz and glamour of southern grandeur. The house caught fire in 1987 and was being rebuilt in 1993, when Cloyce suffered the heart attack that killed him. The partially rebuilt house's steel frame stands today as it was then, at the northeast intersection of Main Street and Preston Road in Frisco.

Ultimately, a downturn in the Texas economy would come back to haunt the Box family, leading to the eventual sale of Doug's beloved horse, Cutter Frisco, and ulti-mately the ranch itself.

President-Elect Tracy Gomes called the meeting to order. Mary Bishop gave the invocation, noting that Mark Kasharʼs father had passed away. Fred Speno reported

that his wifeʼs latest report showed only one small spot of cancer left. Please keep them all in your prayers. Another joy today was that Nigeria is reported to have been polio-free for one year. E.G. McMillan led the Pledge of Allegiance and the “Star Spangled Banner.” Andy Carothers, assisted by Ariane Urschler with the mike, introduced our visi-tors and guests, which included the sponsor for the AVID program at Hillcrest H.S. and Franklin M.S. Meredith LyBrand-Drake announced the weekʼs Marketplace advertiser

Sgt-at-Arms Jim Weichel recognized three new Frank Monroe Fellows (see page 1). He explained that PDG Frank Monroe was a member of our club who was instrumental in setting up the RCPC Foundation. Bronze awards are given for donations of $750, silver for donations of $1,500, and gold for dona-tions of $2,500.

PP Eric Heitkamp said that Paul Alex-ander, one of only ten polio survivors who use iron lungs and who has visited our club, needs to have his iron lung repaired. The cost will be about $3,000. The Prestonwood RC has rais-ed $1500 and asked RCPC to raise the rest. Checks should be made out to District 5810, with the designation of “Paul Alexander Fund”.

Happy Franklin announced a schedule of fellowship events for the fall. The first will be dinner at The Capitol Grill on August 11.

PE Tracy said that PP Phillip Bank-head and Barb Jeffries sent out question-naires to new members and gained valuable information on improving the process to the Blue Badge. Then, PP Cleve Clinton and PP Fred Brown will coach the new members to get more involved. PE Tracy said that new members bring their gifts and passions to the club to make it better.

Mark Kashar whose father has passed awayA Joy- Fred Speno reports that his wifeʼs report showed only one small spot of cancer.

PE Tracy awar-ded a check for $1,000 to Preston Hollowʼs Principal Tom Brandt to cover the cost of the books which are donated to the school library on behalf of our speakers every week. Mr. Brandt thanked the club and explained that they are remodel-ing their library. He also remarked that they were looking for a great librarian to fill the shoes of the former librarian who has retired.

New member Tim Keenan gave his introductory speech. He said that he was born in Massa-chusetts. His father was an FBI agent, and the family soon moved to California. He wanted to be an FBI agent too, and his dad suggested he should go into accounting. He became the Finance Officer in several large companies, In 2013 a lower-level employee was caught in illegal activities; everyone was fired, except at the very top. He then had to decide what to do next. He now has a sign fabrication shop. He and his wife live in Oak Lawn; they have two adult children.

Experienced member Shawn Foster urged members to try a lot of different activi-ties in Rotary. He credits Rotary with allowing him to meet a lot of interesting people whom he might not have met. He also values the Four Way Test as a part of his business.

PE Tracy closed the program by stating (continued on page 3)

THOUGHTS ON . . .

It is just the little touches after the average man would quit that make the master's fame.

~ Orison Swett MardenFame lost its appeal for me when I went into a public restroom and an autograph seeker handed me a pen and paper under the stall door.

~ Marlo ThomasFame comes only when deserved, and then is as inevitable as des-tiny, for it is destiny.

~ LongfellowYou are not born for fame if you don't know the value of time.

~ VauvenarguesBefore a man can wake up and find himself famous he has to wake up and find himself.

that engagement is more than just attendance. He said that the most successful clubs have an effective presence, a notable impact, and they have fun. He recommended that all members become engaged with the youth services com-mittees at Hillcrest H.S, such as Interact, Men-toring, the Ethics Faire, and RYLA. Steve

Franks stated that Interact would be starting Sept. 10 with a talk by Sheriff Lupe Valdez. Jim Weichel said that mentors are needed for the upcoming school year. PE Tracy summarized, “Perfect engagement starts now – with You!”
