Dear Manhattan,

Welcome to the nerdiest issue of the Hype yet! We didn’t really plan it this way, it just sort of happened. Lot’s of great things com-ing up during the next week here in Manhattan for anyone and everyone, just check The Centerfold for all your Everything needs.

Be sure to check out our handy-dandy key to this week’s cover below. We had this really simple, elegant cover in mind last week, but that fell through so we resorted to imagining what it would look like if all of our stories hijacked a flying ship and headed for the Galapagos. Then we made poor Keegan draw it.

Have a great week, MHK!

2012 Manhattan Chamber of CommerceCitizen of the Year and Volunteer of the Year

MANHATTAN, KS – 24 February 2012 - The Lud Fiser Citizen of the Year Award recognizes individuals who have made outstanding and repeated contri-butions to the progress of our community over several years. Originally started in 1967, recipients have been recognized for their contributions to business, Kansas State University, Fort Riley, public service and general volunteerism.

Tonight’s honoree was elected to, a city record of 4 consecutive four year terms as a City Commissioner and served as Mayor of Manhattan a City record 4 times. During his tenure the City population grew by 20% and presented many challenges and opportunities. In 2010, our Citizen of the Year was awarded the distinguished E. A. Mosher Excellence in Local Government Award by the League of Kansas Municipalities which annually recog-nizes the accomplishments of a leader who has displayed an unwavering commitment to his own community and to all the cities of Kansas.

The 2012 Lud Fiser Citizen of the Year…Bruce Snead.

The Volunteer of the Year Award originated in 1990 to express appreciation for the hard work and dedication given to the Chamber or Community by a Chamber of Commerce member. Our Volunteer of the Year currently is an active member of the First United Methodist Church, serving as a Stephen Minister and represents the church on the board of Shep-herds Crossing, an agency which provides rent and utility assistance to needy Manhat-tan Residents. He volunteered as a counselor at Shepherds crossing during its early years, and served as President of the Board for two years and is now a grant writer and project manager for that organization. Tonight’s very special honoree celebrated, with his wife Midge, their 60th wedding anniversary in June last year. He also enters a very special group in Manhattan; in that he was selected as the 2001 Lud Fisher Citizen of the Year…therefore he is only the second person in the his-tory of this recognition to have received both awards. After winning the Chamber recognition in 2001, Our Honoree later reflected in a newspaper story article in the Manhattan Mercury…”I really believe if you retire and slow down you can become stagnant…It is very important to stay ac-tive…As a volunteer, it seems you get a lot more out than you put in.” Tonight we are recognizing this year’s Volunteer of the Year for an incredible 52 years of volunteer service to this Community. Volunteer of the Year – C. Clyde Jones.

The Beat

It’s five AM when my alarm startles me awake.

I shuffle around a bit blurry eyed getting ready until I remember- “You’re going to San Fran-cisco, dude!” I am off to stay for a week with some people that I met last summer for only three days. I met them when they requested to surf my couch last summer while they were road-tripping the US and Canada.

Touristy travel is not my thing. I do not; stay in hotels or hostels, pick up brochures in the cities I am going to visit (really I don’t even pick up a map when I get there). I try and experience the anima that is what ever place I go. When I get back from vacation what am I going to tell my friends? “I saw the golden gate bridge (it was big and metallic)” or “I played a few games of Scategories and “operando” – that’s the Spanish version of operation - in a really cool bar during SFBeer Week!”

Guess which activity I participated in. This is all thanks to Couchsurfing.

CouchSurfing.org is a global Internet site devoted to connecting people across cultures and nations by providing a social networking site where people can offer others the oppor-tunity to stay in their home. “I had really good friends in France thru this network, without them things would have been a lot tougher

and I will always be grateful for that” says Lili Baquero, couchsurfer. Now, trying to put all of my experiences into words would not do jus-tice to the wonder of the offerings of this site.

In the most laymen’s of terms, Couchsurf-ing is Facebook for travelers. You create an account; fill out a profile with pointed descrip-tions, upload a profile picture and extra ones, add friends and search for new ones. Simple enough right?

First, let’s talk about some CS jargon I will be using:

Surfing - staying at someone’s place for free in a city you’re visiting.

Hosting- pretty self-explanatory, someone stays with you, you help them navigate your city, maybe a few tips on things to see.

Couch requesting- going through all of the proper steps on the site and asking someone if they will put you up for a while.

These are some of the basic terms that will resurface throughout this article.

Now, I know what you’re thinking: “You just let a stranger stay at your house for a few days? Why? Do you know them? Aren’t you worried you will be robbed or something??”

These are just a few of the things my friends asked me the first few times I hosted people. After the first few times, my friends under-stood the reason I do these things I do. I do let strangers stay at my house because they are good people with interesting stories and need a place to stay. When I let someone surf my place I do not know them when they arrive, but by the end of the stay I know them more than I would have if I denied them a warm

refuge. That is a fact. When it comes to my personal safety and that of my worldly posses-sions, I can only laugh a little and wonder if they have been watching too much of the news.

There are safety protocols and using your personal experiences with the world, you can do all of this with little risk. I say this because the profiles are not just a picture and some words but also a place to glean the character of the individual. After surfing or hosting, people

write reviews concerning their stay that are avail-able to read for prospective surfers and hosts alike. If this does not satisfy the paranoia of some in the world, the most active and committed members become verified. After a small donation to help with the day to day running of the site the administrators (or powers that be) check that you are who you say you are and that you really do live where you say you do. This way, if something should happen (god forbid) things can be worked out. I tried some of the other hospitality websites when I first heard of the concept but have only stuck with Couchsurfing because for me it is the biggest, most user friendly and the admin-istrators ask how to improve the experience and actually listen and follow through.

In 2009 I backpacked across Europe for a few months. During that time I did stay in a few hostels (to get my bearings) and surfed the rest. Out of all of my experiences I enjoyed the time I spent surfing exponentially better than anytime I did not. What is the point of staying in a foreign city with others that know just as little about it as you do? Yea, you can check Yelp or Foursquare but that personal description you get when you ask “where should I go to …” is never the same as a stock website.

Over time I have made some great friends through this site, and some that are more of an acquaintance situation. “I found many interesting contacts from CS, I met several wonderful people in CS and I get some really good friends from CS - I think it’s great!” says Kristiina Kupits, my host in Tallinn, Estonia. I felt like we were old friends even though we had only known each other for less than a day.

Let’s be honest, not everyone you meet be-comes your friend in life but you are who you are because of your experiences. I have yet to be disappointed or scared away from doing any of this. However, with almost four million members and over four million surfings there are bound to be some negative experiences

and un-positive meetings. Those persons with questionable motives and recurring issues though are removed from membership and amends are worked towards.

My friend Amanda and her roommates hosted a guy biking from Omaha to Wichita for a few days while his bike was being repaired. They showed him around town and sat down to a few family dinners. She endearingly calls it the time they adopted a hippie. I should point out it is not just for those longhaired hippies that live in communes and such. There are just as many types of people on there as there are

in the world and you can find your fit. I hosted a college professor with three PhDs in engineering for the night – good conversation, have stayed with an editor for the Hungarian Elle – knew just where the nightlife was, nerd-ed out with a home-brewer talking about philosophy and starwars.

Going to put this out there, Manhattan is small and a bit out of the way, can’t really deny this. Statistically New York is the most surfed city in the world, why shouldn’t it be. It is world famous you

know. We do have our own perks. With the university and I-70 just down the road there is ample opportunity to get people to come here. Most of the surfers I have had were just pass-ing through for the night but for those that stayed for a few there is plenty to do. I hosted a middle-aged Scottish woman Fourth of July weekend and was able to show her a real ‘meri-can Fourth. It’s a little harder to find a bunch of drunks blowing stuff up in their back yard in a large very urban city. For those of the higher culture we do have the option to show our new friends any number of the plays, concerts, or museums around. At the moment Manhat-tan has eighty three members on the site

and very few listed activi-ties. That may be why few come here; they just do not know how rocking the little

apple can be. But we can show them.

To action! This is my call. If at any moment I have piqued your interest or curiosity go online and look it up. Couchsurfing.org or try some of the others to get a feel for the expe-rience. If you find that a current friend is a member ask them about it. Don’t join to just find a free place to stay but do it to expand your view of the world and meet some really interesting and friendly people. Think of it as staying at a friend’s house when you go out of town. Even if you do not have the space i.e. a sofa or an extra bed for someone to stay on list your self as someone up for coffee or a drink or available to just hang out and show some-one around town. Lets make Manhattan more than just the little apple or the place to stop when you are in the neighborhood but a place to go for the sole purpose of enjoying the real Mid-West American life.

If you are a current member lets do something. This isn’t Sleepy Hollow or some quaint back-woods town where we just sit at home and do nothing. Lets get out there, make some activi-ties and create a vibrant community of surfers that rivals that of the larger cities.

MANHATTAN, Kan. —Nine K-State students head south with passports in hand to the Galapagos Islands 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador in January. All had done their research. Right? Even though the course was about science communication in general, the lessons learned includ-ed what we didn’t know about the islands.

With 19 large islands and 42 smaller land formations, the total land area of the islands is about 4,900 square miles. Right away the physical appearance of the islands wasn’t what was expected. From sea level to about 1,000 ft. elevation and located on the equator, one might think the islands are tropical. Temperature-wise yes, but the variations in land-scape are vast. Some days the group would be on a lush beach with sand that felt like powder. Another day however the sand would be so course and contain rocky formations that shoes were a must.

The islands are land formations, some with remains of volcanic action, made from the shifting of the Earth’s tectonic plates over hundreds of thousands of years. The variations between the tropical beach atmo-sphere and desert-like lands varied on which island you visited. The perception the group had in the beginning was that of the lush beaches, however, they found the desert land to be more frequent.

"I was shocked to arrive on the island of Baltra and see that it looked like a desert. I was told the Galapagos had a dry, arid environment, but I didn't expect to see so many dried-out looking plants and many cacti. I

was glad to see that Baltra had an environment much different than the other islands,” Brian Riconscente, junior in life sciences, said.Secondly, the islands are inhabited to a greater extent than the group had expected. The two major cities the group visited, which are also the two largest cities in the Galapagos, were Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, on San Cristobal and Puerto Ayora, on Santa Cruz. Their populations were about 25,000 per settlement. In recent years, the islands ceased al-lowing immigration in order to control the human effect on the natural environment. Even Ecuadorians cannot freely relocate to the islands and the number of tourists allowed to visit each year is capped at around 100,000. Other protections for the islands include the requirement that all groups of tourists must be accompanied by a certified guide of the National Galapagos Park system.

"When I first decided to go on this trip, I had a lot of misconceptions about what the islands would be like. I imagined tropical, white sand and tortoises everywhere," Annie Cutler, junior in public relations, said.

Finches and giant tortoises are the most famous inhabitants of Galapa-gos, but the K-State group encountered much more. Sea lions and Blue Footed Boobies barely batted an eye at the presence of humans. Tourists to the islands are able to walk up to many nesting birds and sunbath-ing iguanas, and can freely frolic in the waves with young sea lions. It is hard to imagine any visitor leaving the islands without an incredible encounter with one life form or another.

In The Footsteps of Darwin ...by: Sean M. Matthews

“There were so many island formations that we got to explore, and they were all made a little bit differently. That's what made it fun. One day we would be on a sandy white beach, and the next we would be hiking over a sea of lava-rock formations,” Katlyn Wyatt, senior in graphic design, said. “The wildlife was just fantastic. The way the group and I weren't considered a threat to any animal was a dras-tic change from anything I'd ever experienced before.”

One reason behind the island’s fame is the accomplished naturalist and scientist Charles Darwin, who did research on the islands in 1835. Though Darwin’s theory of evolution is said to have developed purely on the islands, Darwin actually came to the islands because of his interest in geology, and being a natural-ist, collected animal species samples. It was only after traveling back home and encounter-ing Thomas Malthus’ theories on population

growth and Alfred Wallace’s theory of natural selection, did Darwin begin to refer back to his experiences in the Galapagos and formulate his theory of evolution, which was eventually pub-lished by Darwin in his ”Origin of Species.”

Jonathan Stepp, junior in journalism, said “When visiting the Darwin Center in Gala-pagos, I think I was expecting a large facil-ity where lots of research would be going on. Instead, we took a tour and were able to see everything there in about 45 minutes. We might have been going quickly, but it was still underwhelming. I could appreciate the animals they had on display, but Lonesome George was kind of a letdown. It's not to say that he wasn't neat to see, but the attraction itself seemed like

any other animal's display they had on exhibit there. Overall, poor funding might be what contributed to the Center looking a little bit run down, but I left unimpressed. That was saying something, considering I enjoyed every other part of the trip.”

Having visited the islands once before, Joye Gordon, assistant professor, wasn’t surprised

by the violation of student perceptions. “The Galapagos Islands offer a rich variety of land-scapes and wildlife that can be overwhelming. Like all travel experiences, the thrill is seeing what you didn’t expect, being caught off guard, and having your previous notions challenged.” Offered through K-State Office of Interna-tional Programs and the A. Q. Miller School of Journalism and Mass Communications the course addressed the gaps between general public opinion and the scientific community’s perspectives on global warming and evolution. “The Galapagos Islands placement of the equa-tor and the rich history of evolution-related scientific research offered an ideal opportunity to learn about the role of media and society’s understanding of important issues such as cli-mate change and evolution,” she said.

In January, 2012, a group of Kansas State Uni-versity students visited Ecuador and the Gala-pagos Islands. The group of 12 disembarked from Kansas in January and returned eight days later with new knowledge of their changed perceptions of the Ecuadorian culture and Galapagos Islands. The group used this study abroad opportunity as a part of a faculty-led program by Professor Joye Gordon, as a part of the Mass Communications and Scientific Dis-course class. They spent a total of three days in Quito, Ecuador, and five days traveling between the islands on a small boat.

The Galapagos Islands are about 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador.

Written and Photographic contributions were made to this article from the following Kansas

State University MC 690 class members: Ashley Bailey, Jesse Randall, Lisa Tabor, Andrea Schwa-gerl, Brian Riconscente, Jonathan Stepp, Katlyn Wyatt, Annie Cutler, and Professor Joye Gordon.

30 Second Book ReviewBy: jimbo Ivy and Keegan Hudspeth

The House TrilogyBrian Herbert and Kevin J. AndersonBantam Books$7.99

I’m not going to lie; many hardcore Dune fans hate these books. They think they’re simplified, dumbed-down fanservice for those that simply couldn’t deal with the psychologically complex and intricate plot of the original Dune books. I disagree, ve-hemently. These books illuminate the expositional material from the originals, things that were barely mentioned, alluded to or hinted at from the time period from when Leto I was a boy until Paul was born. A myriad of fantastic characters from the original material get flushed out; we see Gurney Halleck as a young man on Giedi Prime, Duncan Idaho growing from a feral child in the Forest Guard Preserve all the way to a Swordmaster in the Duke’s service. as well as back story on all the other central characters. Where the hardcore kids find fault, I find improvement: the original Dune, for me, only bogged down when it swerved from the masterful plot and excellent characters into the murky waters of pure philosophy. This doesn’t happen in the House books; action is quick paced and sustained throughout the course of the trilogy. For fans of the old, these books aren’t crap. For those who have no idea who Paul or Gurney or where Giedi Prime is, these books are excellent space fantasy, layered with extremely well laid plots. The original Dune pioneered the idea of multiple protagonists and the House books do not disappoint with five to six main characters to follow. Makes sense, since one of the author’s name is still Herbert and the other is an equally excellent science fiction author. -JI

While it’s pretty clear that quite a few people are foaming at the mouth to catch the next season of Game of Thrones, you could always skip ahead and read the books. A Clash of Kings is the second in the series The Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin, and while it starts out a bit ponderous, Mar-tin does not fail to deliver a really solid plot movement. For those of you who watched the series or read the first book I’m sure you’re all thinking, “Holy crap! Everyone’s dying how can the story possible get better?” Well, I love to say it, but by getting more complicated and adding more characters, and beyond that changing the ones you really got to like.

Tryion Lannister, the Imp whose incorrigible behavior was rampant in the last book, now must hold a kingdom together as the Hand of the King. Everyone in Westeros is crowning themselves by the way, Stannis Baratheon, Renly Baratheon, Joffrey Baratheon, Robb Stark, Balon Greyjoy, and Mance Ray-der. Not to mention Daenerys in the east, who plans to eventually take back the kingdom. Martin knows how to write intrigue and betrayal as if it were real. -KH

The Name of the WindPatrick RothfussDAW Trade$8.00

When thinking of fantasy novels most people either picture some muscle-bound barbarian sporting too-tight leather jockeys and a big sword, or some skinny dorky kid with a wand and a scar on his head. Patrick Rothfuss is a relatively new author on the fantasy writing circuit, but in my opinion is exactly what the genre needs. Roth-fuss takes a character that looks like a “Mary Sue” and kills the trope. The Name of the Wind falls somewhere in between, and further away on the side of quality. The beginning gives you a typical set up: the characters meet at a bar in a small medieval town. War is on the horizon, and Kote the humble tavern owner and bartender wants nothing to do with it.

It is only when a mysterious chronicler comes to town that we find Kote is actually Kvothe, the most infamous man in the world, and consequently the cause of the war. Kvothe is a rogue, a magician, a scientist, a brilliant musician, everything that composes the flawless legendary hero. It is only when the chronicler convinces Kvothe to tell his life story in three days that we see how painful the life of a “hero” is. -KH

The Hype

You know all those Chuck Norris facts that are floating around on the In-ternet? The ones that purport Chuck Norris to be the most awesome man on the planet? (If you’re not familiar with them, you’re probably the sort of person who finds themselves confused while everyone else at the table is laughing at a pop culture reference. If anyone will even sit at a table with you.) So yeah... Chuck Norris facts. Every one of them also pertains to Bob Powers, except Bob Powers did them all WITH NO PANTS ON. Probably.

For instance, Bob Powers believes that honesty is the best policy, if you’re too lazy and selfish to come up with a good lie. Also, Bob Powers once heard a 19 year old say something reasonable and when Bob Powers dies, he wants to have his funeral described as “a total sausage fest”. See? Bob Powers is clearly superior to Chuck Norris. And everything on that list is not only possible but prob-ably best done without pants on. (Also, everything on that list was stolen from his Twitter feed @bobpowers1.) Also, I feel the need to confess that, despite the title, I have no idea if Bob Powers is actually funny internationally. He did tweet about Asians once, though, so that should count.

Bob Powers also writes a blog. Does Chuck Norris write a blog? Um... apparently so, actually. His three most recent posts pray you have a great 2012, endorse Newt Gingrich for President and announce that he’s not dead. You know what Chuck Norris can’t do? Make me give a sh*t.

To be fair, Bob Powers can’t make me give a sh*t either, but at least he’s enter-taining. He writes about holidays. “Daily celebrations of quiet desperation” says the book that collects many of his earlier posts. He celebrates things like “Your Son Just Got His First Tattoo, And It’s Really Racist Day!”, “Concoct A Delight-fully Mischievous Plan To Get Your Divorced Dad To Marry Your Best Friend’s Divorced Mom Day!” and "Breakfast With Two Guys You Don’t Remember Meeting Day!". The name of his blog is GIRLS ARE PRETTY. He has a point. They are. Especially when they’re crying.

Bob Powers also writes books. “Just Make A Choice!” Adventures. They’re like “Choose Your Own Adventures” except he doesn’t get sued for putting a trademarked title on them. These

aren’t the CYOAs from your childhood, though. With titles like “You Are A Mis-erable Excuse For A Hero” and “The Terrible, Horrible Temp-to-Perm Debacle”, were a child to get their grubby little hands upon these literary treasures, their boots would be weighed down so heavily by reality that they’d probably drown in the bathtub. It’s pure coincidence that I leave my copies lying around where

the neighbor’s brats might find them.

Bob Powers also hosts a monthly comedy series called The Steamboat Humor Readings. I can’t attest to the quality of those because they’re held at the Greenlight Bookstore in Brooklyn, NY. I’ve never been to the east coast but I hear everyone there are a**holes. Residents of the East Coast include people like “Son of Sam” David Berkowitz, Benedict Arnold and The Situation. Oh, and every single President of the United States of America. I won’t hold it against him, though. He’s in the humor business. I’m sure he would move if he weren’t so poor. (Hey Bob, if you’re reading this and you’re ever in Man-hattan (the real one, not that knock off in New York) give me a ring. I’d be happy to give you my spare change.)

If you’ve found anything in this article offensive or in bad taste, you can probably pass on Bob Powers. It gets much worse but I can’t use the best material because the editors

are afraid of offending the sponsors. Personally, I don’t get paid for writing, so the sponsors [are great people. Buy their stuff! -ed]. And if you don’t find any of this funny, just imagine someone farted.

But if you’re like me, then you sit in the bar every night, watching the ice melt into your vodka, wondering if you’ll ever have the opportunity to top the stupidity of applying for student loans, wishing you didn’t hate cats so that at least someone would look forward to you coming home every night even if they would rather sleep on a rock hard kitchen counter than in your cold, cold bed. Oh, and you’ll probably find Bob Powers hilarious. So check him out at http://www.bobpowersonline.com

Bob Powers > Chuck NorrisBy: Ace Reporter Sam Sargent

As anyone reading The Hype knows, Manhattan has a rich collection of storytellers- all of the artists, writers and poets that have been featured every week are proof of that. But what you might not know is that Manhattan is also the origin place of Tab Creations, the creators of the Saga Machine table top role play-ing game. Tab Creations started years ago as a group of friends making comics, and in high school they started to create their own pen and paper RPG. Despite several of them moving away from Kansas they've continued creating and growing since then, with the Saga Machine system and its related settings being their most recent line of games. Game developer Thorin Tabor describes the company's ideals best, saying "We're really focused on making games that are fun to play and allow players to be creative. Our games are particularly noteworthy in that they are fast and flexible. Story-telling in our culture goes back to the dawn of civilization, and tabletop role-playing games are just one modern evolution of that tradition." One of the things that I find so uniquely appealing about Saga Machine is that it's an RPG with as many options as there are styles of gamers. The game's core system combines a variety of rules essential to getting started, but even the "class" system typical to games like this is presented as a grouping of available skills rather than a rigid set of abilities that must all be accepted, making it easy to make a unique and personalized character from the very start. Currently there are three Saga Machine settings, each in a different genre. Tab's oldest setting is "Trystell:Reborn", a fantasy themed game of knights and magic influenced by fantasy literature like The Lord of the Rings or A Game of Thrones. Because the setting has been developed and refined since the group's early days, the world of Trystell has it's own rich mythology of gods, monsters, and organizations each vying for control. The developers at Tab Creations have also been influenced over the years by

comic books and science fiction, and they've created two new settings that reflect those genres as well. One is a superhero themed set-

ting called "The Zeotis" that invokes themes of brightly colored heroes, cartoonish villains, and a sense that narrative flexibility errs on the side of exposition. The other is a darker game with a theme of futuristic horror (think of movies like Aliens or Event Horizon) called "Shadows Over Sol". Each have their own additional rules that are added to the Saga Machine system to

evoke that extra flavor. In addition to these setting source books, the mix and match philosophy behind Saga Machine has led to

the development of different "modules" which group rules together. These modules allow Saga Machine to accom-modate a variety of optional rules to make the game fit

the needs of the players- if epic wars on the field of battle is what they want the Combat Modules include rules for mass battles, and if the players would rather focus on individual stylized duels the same module includes rules on fighting stances as well. Mental Modules add options for fear or insanity for a game with a "Call of Cthulhu" style of paranoia, and there are even Social Modules that offer rules to account for the fame (or infamy!) of the heroes. Despite their humble beginnings right here in the Little Apple, Tab Creations has seen significant success, being featured nation-ally at events like Intercon and internationally at New Zealand gaming conventions KapCon and Chimera Con. If your gaming group is looking for a new and flexible game to try, previews and occasional free supplements like custom rules can be found at their website at www.tabcreations.com. If you like what you see there, you can show your support for these local storytellers through the Tab Products page on their website or through their

publisher at www.lulu.com by buying one of their books to use the next time your gaming group gathers around the table to create their own tales.

The Thing About:

By: DJ Ginger

Artic Monkeys

When I’m not preaching the holy gospel of Indie Rock, I spend a quality amount of time with, get this, other musical forms. One of which I enjoy quite a bit is Brit Rock. Some of my favorite bands come from across the pond (The Smiths, Paloma Faith, The Cure, etc) but one of the those bands have currently come to the musical forefront of my mind lately. That is the work of Arctic Mon-keys. Now, usually, this spot is reserved for an album review, but in this case it’s going to be a band review. Have you ever have that band you listen to that just pisses you off so much because they are so good? Yeah, that is this band with me. I started listen-ing the Arctic Monkeys back in 2007 when they debuted in the United States. My friend Ashley pretty much worshiped the ground they walked on but I didn’t quite get the hype but thought they were good and followed them loosely since then. It wasn’t until this year when the set of “Evil Twin” videos from the ‘Suck it and See’ album caught my eye. I went back over their archive of music spanning from 2006 to now and made one ultimate decision. This will be one of the bands from our generation that will span on even after their demise. Trust me, I don’t use that term lightly, from lyrics to the composition, the band is amazing. I love this band so much is for two reasons: One, Alex Turner writes some of the most poetic lyrics I’ve heard from someone close to my own age and two, their music is so tight. What exactly do I mean by tight? Well I mean that when you listen to the song “Brianstorm” off ‘Florescent Ado-lescence’ and that beginning drum beat is so rhythmic and the guitars play beau-tifully messy on top of that almost makes my heart stop. Not to mention, most of the members at the time that record was released were in their early 20’s which is pretty impressive. I recently received ‘Suck it and See’ for a Christmas present and have been spinning it pretty regularly in my car and stereo system and it opened up another really large realization. That this band although young, has grown quite greatly from their angst filled lyrics of their youth into a musical and lyrical adulthood. The first release in the states in 2006 titled ‘Whatever People Say I Am, I’m Not” is filled full of lyrics about being cues for clubs, girl’s judgemental eyes, and the hard points of being 20. On ‘Suck It and See’ it takes a more ma-ture look at the world around them. “Piledriver Waltz” is the best song on the album, hands down, mainly because it’s talking about “If you’re going to walk on water make sure you wear comfortable shoes” and the fact that the actually melody is in a waltz style. It’s a play on words and sounds which is quite a talent more musicians could get into. Another really good track on ‘Suck It and See’ is “Library Pictures”. I think this song is a pretty good example of why Turner is a genius lyrically. “Library pictures of the quickening canoe/The first of it’s kind to reach the moon/Trust some ellipses to chase you around the room/Through curly straws and metaphors and goo” Who on earth can think of rhyming ‘room’ with ‘goo’? Someone who is good with language. Honestly, whether this pushes you to get in with their first album or their latest, the Monkeys are always a good pick for just a good album to listen to. But seriously, if I ever meet Alex Turner in person I’m going to punch him in his beautiful, stupid, face.

Free Music Friday!Los Habaneros & Granny Tweed

by: Jimbo IvyThis Friday at Auntie Mae’s Parlor, The Hype Weekly continues to bring you awesome music with no cover! Up this month are local surf rock legends Los Habaneros and L-Town Alt-Country Punk purveyors Granny Tweed.

I know, surf rock, in Kansas? Our own intrepid Alpha Team from The Hype Weekly podcast posited that they were the only surf rock band in a five state area, which was of course very wrong, but they are none-the-less the finest example of surf-rockery here in MHK. Coming off of a bit of a hiatus, Antonio Senior (of “Adam Eats with a Surf Rocker” fame), Thad Reist, “The Legendary” Bill Hughes and their new drummer Kris Kleiner will be blasting minds and melting faces opening up for Granny Tweed. This is dirty surf rock, kids, surf rock that your mother would not be proud of you for listening to. This is the kind of surf rock that drives teens crazy, pushes them to maddness and sin!

Do you like punk? Do you like country and blue-grass? Ever imagined them smashed together and stirred with a bit of whisky? Well then you’re prob-ably a fan of a kind of music popular through Kansas and the Midwest in general called speedgrass, or punkgrass or more generally newgrass. Combining aspect of rock, punk, bluegrass and country music to form a dirtier, faster version of modern bluegrass music this musical style was represented locally by such bands as the Dwayne Brothers, Split Lip Ray-field and other Winfield newgrassers.

Two very unique forms of music in one of the most unique bars in Manhattan for one very low price: FREE! Come down to Mae’s this Friday at 9pm and getcha some!

The Bump

Dear Professor Holden, Kansas Poet Laureate Emeritus,

Sorry about the time I inappropriately attempted to hug you.

It was at Poetry on Poyntz last Friday in the Strecker-Nelson's pop-up gallery. There weren't a lot of people there but the ones that were, I hadn't seen in a while.

One of them was you, and the thing about you is if I had never met you I may not have ever written a poem worth showing anybody else.

I hadn't even had anything to drink! Normally when I attend a Strecker-Nelson event I just straight up bee-line toward the liquor. Without trying to be obvious about it, of course. I look around for familiar faces, wave and say hi, but always moving boozeward. That's when I ran into you.

I reached out just for a handshake but then I thought better of it. I reached again, with my other arm, as to em-brace.

I even said "come on, put 'er there." Can you believe that? Who says that? What was I thinking?

So there I was, sort of giving you a hug, except that you didn't really move in a

huglike fashion. You just stood there, possibly feeling awkward.

At that point, gallery owner Barbara Nelson and University Distinguished Pro-fessor of English Elizabeth Dodd, who were talking together further up the hall, turned toward me and said hi.

Had they seen me inappropriately hugging the first Poet Laureate of Kansas?

When the poetry started i picked up a Blue Moon and sat by Dr. Dodd. I won-dered about the turnout. There were seventeen people seated; an eighteenth and a nineteenth tiptoed in a little while later.

"This thing used to fill the room," Jay Nelson told me later. Where were all the students? There were a few times I came here and it was standing room only, on account of all my classmates showing up. Was anyone there with a bunch of classmates?

And seriously, put 'er there? What was I thinking?

Maybe I remembered the afternoon of my first class with you. Or maybe I remembered how the next day, when I was in the Hale stacks, staying on top of my bustling social calendar, I thought of you. I checked out "Knowing." It had this on page 103:

A Personal History of the Curveball

It came to us like sex.years before we ever faced the thing,

we'd heard about the curve

and studied it. Aerial photossnapped by night in Life, mapping

Ewell "The Whip" Blackwell's sidearm hook, made it look a fake: the dotted line:

hardly swerved at all.Such power had to be a gift

or else some trick; we didn't care which.

But the first curve I ever threwthat worked astonished me

as much as the lefty clean-up man I faced. He dropped, and when I grinned

smiled weakly back. What he'd seenI couldn't even guess

until one tepid evening in the Pony LeagueI stepped in against a southpaw,

a kid with catfish lipsand greased-back hair,

who had to be soo stupidto know any magic tricks. He lunged,

smote one at my neck.I ducked. Then, either

that ball's spin broke every lawI'd ever heard about or else

Morris County moved almost a foot. I was outby the cheapest trick the air

can pull--Bernoulli's Principle.Like "magic," the common love songs

wail and are eager to repeatit helplessly, magic, as if to say

what else can one say, it's magic, which is the stupidest of wordsbecause it stands for nothing:

there is no magic. And yetwhat other word does the heartbroken

or the strikeout victim haveto mean what cannot be and mean what is.

Incredible. He wrote this? And he's teaching moi? The rest of the semester I made a point of visiting you in your cluttered office often, even when I didn't really have anything to say.

I might have also been thinking about the time I was standing in a hallway, quoting sweet, beautiful poetry -- not my own -- to my friend Blake. Standing nearby, you perked up and chimed in with the next line, lending an authority to my poetic rantings which ensured that Blake's tender heart would be putty in my hands for years to come, and for that you actually do deserve a hug.

Maybe the Strecker-Nelson wasn't really the place for that though.

After the night's last reader, after everyone had packed up their stuff and began filing out of the room in twos and threes, I stayed behind noodling around with my camera. It really is a terrible camera. You were the last to walk by. "See you later, alligator," you said. You were looking down at me and you. Were. Beam-ing.

I knew what you expected.

I said it.

"After a while, crocodile."

That exchange, it's just sort of a ritual you've always liked. That's why you leaned back and laughed so hard. Maybe you didn't even mind that weird stilted hug after all.

Pet of the Week

FrancisWe are not sure what breed Francis is, but she’s a gorgeous silver/gray young female with huge ears. She is very friendly and will eagerly hop out of the cage to greet you. Francis is currently bonded with

Lulu and we’d prefer they stay together. Francis will be spayed before going to her forever home.

She does very well with her litterbox habits.

RCHS rabbits live in loving foster homes where they are litterbox trained, spayed/neutered, social-ized, given sufficient exercise outside of their cage, and fed a diet of grass hay and Timothy pellets to maintain a healthy weight. If you are interested

in adopting this rabbit, please contact our Exotics Foster Coordinator, Amy, at [email protected]

The other day, I pur-chased a device I needed to exchange from Game Hounds on Ft. Riley Blvd, but I couldn’t find the receipt. I proceeded to go down there anyway in an attempt to exchange it. When I came in, I was greeted and helped by the owner of the store himself, Rusty. Who helped in such a way I was inspired to send all of my somewhat heavy gaming addiction/business his way. A few days later, I got the opportunity to sit down and speak with him about this very unique local business. To understand such an enjoyable place of business, I first needed to know the man behind the madness. Rusty has varied influences, ranging from his parents being local business owners for many years, to his friend Tom from Game Guy, and former employers. He is very experienced himself, having worked at Game Stop for 11 years, KB toys for 2 years and an old card shop called Fielder’s Choice for 4 years. Growing up on Super Nintendo, NES, and Atari, his passion for the field is evident, not unlike myself. His ability to regularly work around this industry, however, is far more difficult. Having difficult injuries from a car accident when he was younger, there are many pains that are part of his daily routine that can limit him. This is compounded by a disease called Fibromyalgia. He had to move on from his former job at Game Stop in part because, as he says, “The hours were literally killing me.” When he decided to depart Game Stop, his family, wife and friends were all extremely supportive and inevitably convinced him to live his passion through his own store. The most fascinating part of this store is the business plan. There are no financial sales quotas, no pushing for the sale of any item, as Rusty puts it, “The only require-ment I have for my employees is customer service. I encourage them to talk to customers about gaming and take their time. I want people to come back and get to know them, not just be a number”. I myself have experienced this treatment first hand and know full well that it’s not just lip service. Another unique aspect of this store is its location. While many businesses are located in heavy shopping areas, such as near campus or large chain stores, he is located off of Fort Riley Blvd., in an area he has seen developing for a little while now and is excited to be a part of. Also, this location offered reasonable rent to have a large store as he wanted. Whether you are a first time customer or a member of “the pack”, as Rusty puts it in reference to his Hounds online, the experi-ence of this store is not just that of a video game shop, or even a game shop, but as Rusty puts it “An entertainment store”. So come be entertained!
