The Passport On January 11th, M1s received a brief introduc-tion to, and demonstration of, the Passport as an interactive tool and guide for reflection and for build-ing their curriculum vitae (CV) and personal state-ments for residency. Dr. Ryan (Bamforth House) and Dr. Lubner (Gundersen House) reiter-ated the following Pass-port concepts and encour-aged M1s to begin this process now so that stu-dents don’t forget key in-formation they will need in just a few short years down the road to residen-cy. The Passport as Guiding Tool The Passport allows you to have interactive conver-sations with fellow stu-

dents, mentors, and col-leagues as you encounter challenges and make de-cisions about your career in medicine. It serves as a point of direction and re-flection for extracurricular awareness, self-care, and support The Passport Builds Your CV The Passport allows you to upload important docu-ments such as research abstracts or publications. Your work can be tagged with a variety of standard tags (or create your own) and formatted into a func-tional CV. The Passport Prepares You for Interviews Medical students who uti-lize the Passport to reflect, discuss, converse, and build a body of their work

will discover that they have created a path to powerful responses for common questions asked during residency inter-views. The Passport Serves You in Residency and Beyond You will always have ac-cess to your OASIS Pass-port where you can contin-ue connecting with men-tors as well as revising and refining your curricu-lum vitae. Get started early and stand out with a well-prepared and thoughtful personal statement and CV. If you need assis-tance, contact your House Mentor for valuable help!

Every School of Medicine and Public Health class has written an honor code to guide them through their student years and careers as physicians. On January 25th, the en-tering class of 2016 pledged their honor code and received pins, a gift from the Wisconsin Medi-cal Alumni Association (WMAA) as visible re-minders of their pledge.

TIME & LOCATION TO TBD

Every year after the Dean’s Cup is fin-ished, medical students have fun with the House Cup! The Dean’s Cup is a friendly competition between the Law School and the Medical School. The House Cup builds House unity and pride as each House competes to win the coveted and fabulous Cup Trophy. IHC has planned a series of fun and competitive events that will give you a break from studying while doing great things for the community. How’s that? Over the years, some House Cup events such as “Penny Wars” helped us to accumulate a small fund of money.

When that fund hits $1k the winner of the House Cup will donate the fund to its traditional “community partner.” Will this be your House’s winning year?

January 11th was a very busy evening for many medical students; however, about 20 students attended the Gold Humanism Honor Society Rounds to define and discuss narrative medicine. Narrative medicine is following a story about a patient through the patient’s own language about themselves. It is about how illness fits into the patient’s story. And narrative medicine address-es the psychological symptoms along-side physical suffering. Essentially, the physician reads the patient like a book, a book that the patient him or herself has written .

Using narrative medicine validates the patient’s experiences, explores the patient’s circumstances, and leads to more appropriate medical treatments. More traditional approaches can sepa-rate a doctor from his or her patient, focusing on diagnosis and solutions. With narrative medicine, the doctor engages more deeply in the patient interaction. Narrative medicine is not a guarantee for a right answer but it helps with providing more appropriate treatment. Students attending Rounds shared their experiences with patients in which

learning more about the patient’s story impacted overall treatment of the pa-tient. Attendees also pointed out that patients are not necessarily forthcoming with their stories--doctors need to cre-ate a space of trust in which the pa-tients can feel comfortable revealing themselves. The audience had a very active, inter-active, and supportive discussion. And although we ran out of time to view some of the video clips, attendees were encouraged to watch and think about doctor-patient interactions as shown in clips from movies such as Ordinary People.

GHHS January Recap: Narrative Medicine

You’re Invited to Gold Humanism Honor Society Rounds Wednesday, February 8

6:00-7:00pm Room # TBD

One Woman’s Journey Please join GHHS and guest, Lois Stauber, to learn more about how humanism in medicine

initiated deeper healing for Lois after her diagnosis of ovarian cancer.

Please RSVP here by Monday, February 6th. Dinner is graciously sponsored by WMAA and GHHS appreciates that those who RSVP will be in attendance.

The current GHHS members will be visiting M3s at the February 17th Core Day to discuss the nomination and in-duction process to Gold Humanism Honor Society. GHHS inductees are recognized on ERAS as well as the Medical Student Performance Evalua-tion (MSPE, aka “Dean’s Letter”). Your voting ballot will come through OASIS after 3pm on February 17th. You will have the opportunity to vote for classmates you believe demonstrate the qualities of integrity, excellence, compassion, altruism, respect, empathy and service. If you’d like to learn more about GHHS, contact Jodi Sherman ([email protected]) or attend the next GHHS discussion on Wednes-

day, February 8th at 6pm (location TBA). The Gold Humanism Honor Society (GHHS) was started in 2002 by the Arnold P. Gold Foundation, to instill a culture of respect, dignity, and compas-sion for patients and professionals. GHHS has grown as a national organi-zation devoted to building a network of advocates for compassionate care and now has more than 25,000 members in training and practice. The GHHS SMPH Chapter, estab-lished in 2006, accepts no more than 15% of the rising M4 class each year and; our chapter members join a grow-ing network of medical students, resi-dents, and faculty who are equally ded-

icated to practicing and promoting hu-manistic values.
