Dear TIS Community,

The International School has inspired children to become global citizens for nearly 25 years. Every year teachers, parents, donors, trustees, administrators and friends come together with a common goal - to nurture and educate. This goal is at the center of everything we do.

We’re excited to share with you our accomplishments from 2012 - 2013 and the results of your generosity and investments. Your contributions as dedicated community members have strengthened The International School for the nearly 500 students that attend today, and the thousands more that will join TIS in the future.

Thank you for helping us grow. Your generosity allows children to reach their full potential as individuals, community leaders, and global citizens.

With gratitude,

Matt SchweitzerTIS Board President

“Putting my son through TIS has been the best parenting decision I ever

made. The education he received, his relationship with (his teacher) and the

Capstone trip have really laid a foundation for his sense of self and world community,

and showed him real tangible rewards for hard work.”

TIS Parent, Class of 2013

Annual Report July 2012 - June 2013

Message from the Board President

Highlights from the 2012 - 2013 School YearThis year we have strengthened our programming, staff, community and learning environment. Here’s how:

ACADEMICS & PROGRAMMING

Literacy Screening for Kindergartners -We partnered with a Reading Specialist this year to screen kindergarten students prior to beginning English classes in 1st grade. The data collected will improve literacy education by helping teachers tailor instruction for individual students, informing parents about the literacy readiness of their child, and allowing TIS to develop readiness norms over time.

Advances in Student Technology Use - Thanks to the generosity of our donors we have been able to increase access to technology over the last several years. This year students used new laptops and ipads to produce short movies, practice reading and writing skills with interactive software, build online presentations, and much more.

Student Support Services - Implemented in 2012, Student Support Services is a group comprised of educational administrators and teachers. The group supports students who need extra assistance to succeed. By working directly with the child’s teachers, SSS helps create effective instructional strategies tailored to the unique academic and social/emotional needs of the student.

TEACHERS & STAFF

New Summer Camp Director/Capstone Coordinator - The new full-time staff member leads all aspects of our thriving summer camp program and 5th grade study abroad trips. With the addition of this new position, we can better support the students, families and faculty participating in these exciting educational experiences.

Continued Drive in Professional Development - We continue to make staff professional development a priority. This year faculty participated in workshops devoted to making math more meaningful and accessible to all students, creating engaging lessons, exploring the many ways that children learn, and implementing literacy centers.

Librarian Position Now Full Time - To better support our community, the Librarian now works extended hours. Students and teachers benefit from increased assess to the library resources and the librarian’s educational support.

CAMPUS & FACILITIES

Purchased Hilltop Building and Land - Completing the initial phase of our Campus Master Plan (adopted in 2011), we purchased the TIS Hilltop Building and three adjacent parcels of land in 2012. This purchase secures TIS’ long-term home in Portland’s South Waterfront. Additionally, the purchase provides increased financial stability and greater control over our future.

Safety Improvements - In an ongoing effort to increase safety, the Facilities Department completed a number of important projects this year, including installing locks on all classroom doors, fencing in the outdoor PE area, adding handrails to the playground stairs, repairing pathways, and installing laminated protective glass on all entrances.

Campus Improvements - Our Facilities Department also made significant campus upgrades to enhance our learning and work environments. Advancements included adding filtration systems to all water fountains, replacing worn art tables, sound-proofing the music room, installing a new PA system in the gym, and improving landscaping.

“The International School has widened my knowledge of world cultures

and helped me interact with people of different backgrounds than my own.”

TIS Alumna, Class of 2003

Highlights from the 2012 - 2013 School Year (continued)SCHOOL COMMUNITY

Enrollment Increased 5.4% Over the Previous Year- Stronger student retention, with more students staying through 5th grade, has led to steady enrollment growth. While we still maintain a maximum class size of 19 students, the increased retention means that students in the upper grades benefit from a larger social circle and more collaborative interaction.

More Opportunities to Connect – As our school grows, we have searched for more opportunities for our families to come together on and off campus. This summer, we hosted several fun family events to bring together different grades and tracks, connect with new families, and strengthen our community. The effort will continue in the coming year with new social opportunities throughout the school year and summer.

Community & Character Building Through Assemblies- In 2012-2013 we began focusing on the International Baccalaureate Learner Profile as a central theme to each assembly. The opportunity to unite as a group allows our students to foster connections across grades and tracks, while the focus on the Learner Profile encourages students to develop important skills as individuals and community members.

THE IB LEARNER PROFILE

TIS students, teachers and staff strive to be:Inquirers, Knowledgeable, Thinkers, Communicators, Principled, Open-Minded, Caring, Courageous, Balanced & Reflective.

“The International School is aboutmore than just the language immersion.

It’s about global citizenship and creating globalcitizens. When students graduate from TIS, they havethe ability to go to a country that speaks their track

language and interact as though they grew up there, not just on a linguistic basis, but with a broad understanding of the culture.”

Robert Woods, Head of School

Last year, your generous philanthropic support opened the door to many exciting opportunities for our students. Your gifts sparked creativity in the music room by providing new instruments. You bolstered confidence in the classroom by funding professional development workshops. You encouraged critical thinking by giving students access to relevant and challenging digital applications. For this, we can not thank you enough!

Visit intlschool.org/annualreport to view a list of the donors and volunteers who have made possible all of this and more!

2012 Auction & Special AppealIn 2012 the TIS Auction netted a record $261,598 including $113,340 for the Special Appeal. The “One Size Does Not Fit All” Special Appeal funded technology and tools for individual student development. Donations allowed us to purchase 40 new student computers, provided early childhood classroom learning essentials, funded kindergarten literacy screening and enabled many professional development opportunities for our teachers.

2012 - 2013 Annual Fund

Families, friends, staff and trustees generously donated $54,202 to last year’s Annual Fund. Contributions helped sustain The International School by supporting our operating budget and funding many critical aspects of campus life - from building maintenance to field trips.

100% of trustees, 100% of staff members and 79% of active families participated in either the Annual Fund or Special Appeal this year. Many generously gave to both. Thank you!

2012 Run for the ArtsOur 2012 Run for the Arts jog-a-thon netted a record $21,179 to support our beloved music and art programs. RFA donations funded new art supplies, musical instruments, teaching tools, professional development and a 5th grade zine workshop – a collaboration between the Art and English Departments.

Special Gifts

We are honored to recognize two outstanding families this year who are helping to secure TIS’ future and move our school into an exciting new chapter.

We greatly appreciate the early investment by grandparents Bob and Sharon Miller in the Campus Master Plan. Their tremendous support of this project has provided the all important foundation for a successful capital campaign. Thank you, Bob and Sharon, for believing in TIS and the Campus Master Plan.

Kim and Susan Marcus have generously made a donation to TIS’ first endowment fund. Thank you, Kim and Susan, for your early support and for preparing us for future success!

The endowment fund is in the final stages of being formally established. Stay tuned for updates on this important new giving opportunity.
