The Italian school is committed totaking care of the continuous formationof each student, Italian, orforeigner, because it considers educationas a right and a duty of fundamentalimportance to a person.The Italian law states thatschool attendance is compulsoryup to the age of 16.

Day Care – (Nest)Municipal and private day cares areeducational services offered to childrenof the age ranging from threemonths to three years, whose aimis also to assist parents in childcare;they are usually open from 7.30amto 5.30pm, from Monday to Fridaywith the possibility of a flexible timetable.Attendance requires somemonthly payment, which dependson family income and the selectedTimetable.

Nursery SchoolsThis service is offered by state, and private schools, whichadmit children aged three to six years.Children who celebrate their 3rdbirthday before December 31st canbe registered into nursery schools,and in special circumstances, childrenturning three by 30th April ofthe following year.Majority of schools operate fromMonday to Friday, 8 to 9 hours aday, and a fee is required for themeals provided, depending onone’s income. Families that earn avery low income are exempted frompaying.

Primary SchoolsThe primary school has a duration of five years. It is compulsory for children turning six by 31st December.Children turning six by 30th April of the following year can also be registered.Schools are usually organizedin the following way:• Standard teaching hours: fromMonday to Saturday, with amorning timetable that variesfrom 24 to 30 hours a week;• Full time: from Monday to Friday,with an afternoon timetable,with a total of 40 hours a week.A fee is required for the mealsprovided, depending on the income,except for very low-income families.

First LevelSecondary SchoolFirst Level Secondary School has a duration of three years and it is compulsory for students that have completed the five years of Primary school.Schools are normally organized in:• Standard time-table: five to sixdays a week with a total of 30hours morning schedules;• Extended timetable: five to sixdays a week with a total of 36 to40 hours, with morning and afternoonschedules, meals provided.In the first level secondaryschools, English and a second foreignlanguage are taught (French,German or Spanish).

High SchoolAfter eight years of education (fivein Primary school and three in firstlevel secondary school), studentscan register for the first level of High school to get a High school diploma,which lasts for five years, ora professional diploma which lastsfor a minimum of three years.Compulsory education, up to 16years of age, can also be accomplishedby attending experimentalcourses in professional training.
