INTRODUCTION
This collection contains the personal and professional papers ofJohn Melmoth Dow, who was closely connected with the Central Americancoast trade. For nearly thirty years, he was a ship captain off thewestern coast of Central America and later in life settled on theIsthmus as agent of the Pacific Mail Steamship Company.
Born in New York in 1827, he was intended for the law, the studyof which he began at an early age. Failing health drove him to thesea. In 1850 he joined the Panama Railroad Company, which had receiveda concession from Colombia t o build a line across the Isthmus of Panama.Dow made his first voyage to the coast of Central America in 1851 as2nd Officer on the steamer "Fremont." When David Hoadley becamepresident of the Panama Railroad Company in 1853, Dow was given commandof the steamer "Constitution." The Panama Railroad was completed in1855; however the company was not destined to monopolize the isthmiantraffic. Soon after the road was completed, Dow opened the CentralAmerican service of the "Brig Line,' a part of the Panama RailroadCompany, as commander of the steamer "Constitution." The line wascomposed of ten sailing vessels which made regular and rapid voyagesbetween New York City and Aspinwall on the isthmus until 1870 whenthe business was sold to the Pacific Mail Steamship Company.
The slow process of discharging and receiving cargo, gave CaptainDow ample time to pursue his interest as a n?uralist, exploring theCentral American coast to collect marine flora and fauna. As a directresult of his labors, no fewer than 200 new fishes were discovered andnamed. A new species of tapir was also discovered by Captain Dow inthe highlands of Guatemala. A handsome member of the orchid familyfound in Costa Rica bears the name of Cathleya Dowiana.
Dow carried on an extensive correspondence with Professor SpencerBaird of the Smithsonian Institution, and Osbert Salvin and P. L.Sclater of the Zoological Society of London pertaining to the collectionand transportation of specimens of flora and fauna native to CentralAmerica. He was also an honorary fellow of the Zoological Societyof London, a member of the New York Geographical Society, and of theAcademy of Natural Science of Philadelphia. The University of Gottingenconferred on him the degree of Doctor of Philosophy.
Dow's career as a ship captain ended in 1876 when he was appointedas a special agent for the pacific Mail Steamship Company. Hisprofessional papers include the Pacific Mail Steamship Company's shippingand trading contracts with Central American governments; administrativerecords, cargo and freight (mainly coffee and indigo) statements, andfinancial and commercial records, annual reports, logs, maps, and schedulesas well as their telegraphic code.
7. Included in this professional correspondence are a few letters andnewspaper clippings that pr0vide.a certain insight into a number ofhistorical events of that central section of the continent in the secondhalf of the nineteenth century. Of interest is correspondence with Central
