Dear Parishioners,

The Joy of Becoming Catholic

It’s hard to believe that Easter is right around the corner! Just a year ago, we were all in utter disbelief of the sudden (and sometimes unwelcomed) changes in our lives brought on by the pandemic. Practically everything had to be cancelled or shut down indefinitely. It was a bizarre time (and in some ways still is!) and a spiritually devastating one for so many Catholics. Never in a million years did we imagine hearing “cancelled” and “Holy Week/Easter” in the same sentence! One program that fell victim to the pandemic shutdown was RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults). It left those involved hanging, wondering what now? Where do we go from here? Will we ever experience the joy of becoming Catholic? If so, when?

“When” is very, very soon! I announce with great JOY that at the Easter Vigil -- the Church’s most beautiful celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus! -- seven people in our community will be baptized and confirmed. Our catechumens Andria Kozak (from last year’s RCIA group), Michael Hart, Daniel Kim, and brothers Jonathan & Alexander Salazar* will be fully initiated into the Catholic Church

through the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist. Ryan Peterson, a baptized Catholic who has already received his First Communion, will complete his Sacraments of Initiation through Confirmation the same evening. [*Their brother Caleb, a toddler, will also be baptized on April 3.]

This wonderful group of people has gone through much preparation culminating with the Easter Vigil. Part of their journey to the font is that they have been received among us, the Rite of Acceptance, and they have been enrolled in the Book of the Elect in the Rite of Election, which took place on Feb. 21. Parishioners attending the 9:00 am Mass (on the 3rd, 4th, and 5th Sundays of Lent) might have noticed something different after the homily. We were celebrating what’s called the Scrutinies. They are rites of conversion and repentance. Scrutinies are profoundly rooted in our human experience. All of us need to examine (scrutinize) how we are, what we do and what we fail to do. It’s crucial that we really look at the areas of our lives where we are tempted, or seriously sin.

Please join me in praying for our Elect, as well as their families and sponsors. These soon-to-be new Catholics are signs of hope! They will be among more than 76 million Catholics in the United States. May they serve as an inspiration to all of us to share our faith and to live the Gospel more deeply not only at Easter time but beyond! There is much to rejoice in “becoming” Catholic, but there is a DEEPER JOY in BEING one.

March 8, 2021

Dear Father Boland,

Even during this difficult time, the 2020 Annual Catholic Appeal raised $15 million. Please accept my thanks and congratulations to you, your parish staff, and the entire Our Lady of Perpetual Help community for helping to advance the mission of the Archdiocese of Chicago and your parish.

Participation in this important annual campaign clearly demonstrates your parishioners' willingness to bring the power of God's mercy to a world in need as followers of Jesus who bring his healing and hope. I am inspired by their sense of responsibility for others, a sentiment shared by all of the many beneficiaries of their generosity.

The funds generated by the Appeal support the healing work of the many archdiocesan ministries, services, parishes, and schools in need. On a global scale, those funds support Catholic Relief Services.

Father Boland, please let the people of Our Lady of Perpetual Help know of my gratitude and that I value their partnership. I pledge good stewardship of their sacrificial gifts to the Appeal, as well as my remembrance of them and their families in prayer and at the Lord's Table. Their prayers for me are much appreciated and needed.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Archbishop of Chicago

March 10, 2021

Dear Father Boland,

Please let me express to you my most sincere thanks for Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Parish's contribution of $576.55 as a part of our annual Baby Bottle Campaign. Your parish's generous support provides essential funding for our pregnancy care centers and residential programs.

With your suppport, Aid for Women reaches thousands of women each year in the Chicago metropolitan area. Each woman is given the emotional, practical, and spiritual support that she needs to choose life for her unborn baby and provide a better future for herself and for her child. At our residential programs, Heather's House and Monica's House, we offer moms a safe and nurturing home where they can live with their children, while developing the education and life-skills necessary to become independent, self-sufficient mothers.

Please continue to pray for Aid for Women, that we might have the resources necessary to serve the men, women, and families who seek our help. The need has never been greater.

Once again, thank you for partnering with us in our mission of empowering women to choose life. May God continue to bless you and keep you.

For Life

Parish Pastoral Council Seeks New MembersThe OLPH Parish Pastoral Council (PPC) invites parishioners to apply to become a member!

“My time on the PPC has given me such perspective and hope. At each monthly meeting, I’m reminded of the power of the many who pull together in little ways to make a big difference in our parish and our community.” --PPC member Lisa Salemi

The 15-member PPC is the central coordinating group of the Parish and serves in an advisory role to Fr. Jeremiah Boland as Pastor. The PPC is charged with implementing the Church’s renewed concept of shared responsibility among laity, religious and clergy. In addition to engaging with and supporting OLPH’s 60+ ministries, the PPC advises on visioning, long-range planning, and policy decisions of the Parish.

“The PPC is the common link to all ministries and therefore critical to supporting Father Jerry as Pastor of the parish...I was selected to join the Council and after three years I can unequivocally state it has been a worthwhile experience. The opportunity to work with Fr. Jerry, fellow Council members, and Parish ministry groups has been very rewarding.” -- PPC member Tom Monticello

The PPC meets on the third Monday evening of every month (currently via Zoom). PPC members serve a three-year term beginning each July. Please visit https://www.olphglenview.org/parish-council for more information.

Interested parishioners should e-mail [email protected] for more information or to apply. Applicants will receive a Zoom interview in mid-April.

A PPC member will contact all applicants to schedule a meeting time.

seek, share, rejoice - year of st. joseph...

Our COVID-Style St. Joseph’s Table

In years past, OLPH had a wonderful tradition of presenting a “St. Joseph’s Table” rich with delicious foods for purchase to raise money for the poor. The tradition originated in Italy and has a three-fold purpose:

1. Veneration: special recognition of St. Joseph during feast day Mass and at the “table”

2. The Table: both a kind of “altar of reverence” and a communal celebration

3. The Poor: the intention of all the gifts is to help those in need

Pandemic Problem-SolvingIt would have been wonderful to reinstate this tradition during the Year of St. Joseph, but Covid prevents us from collecting foods and eating together at this time. Yet, we can still provide nourishing gifts to the poor by making personal food donations to the Northfield Food Pantry all next week. This will become OLPH’s “St. Joseph’s Table” for 2021.

We believe St. Joseph would agree this is the best way we can honor him as the Pillar of Families and the Comforter of the Afflicted. When communal gatherings resume, we will have a real St. Joseph’s Table in thanksgiving for the many blessings our parish received during this jubilee year. Until then, let us put our love and mercy into action by serving the poor.

Honoring St. Joseph: St. Joseph's Table

Lenten Almsgiving in Honor of St. Joseph Consider making a food donation in the final week of Lent to help our neighbors in need and in honor of St. Joseph, Comforter of the Afflicted.

seek, share, rejoice - congratulations!...

Congratulations!

When Pope Francis proclaimed a special “Year of St. Joseph” on December 8, 2020, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, he presented a unique opportunity to increase our love for St. Joseph and “encouraged us to implore his intercession and to imitate his virtues and his zeal" especially during this troubling time of the pandemic.

More than 65 OLPH parishioners accepted the challenge! Thirty-three days ago—one day for every year in the life of Jesus—we began a special program to prepare ourselves to be Consecrated to St. Joseph during this jubilee year. We studied his virtues, contemplated the mysteries of his life with Jesus and Mary, and discovered the special role God gave him as Head of the Holy Family. On Friday, March 19, the Solemnity of St. Joseph, we accepted St. Joseph as our guardian, our protector and our Spiritual Father on earth. Thank you St. Joseph!

–The Hearts Afire Team

Dive into the Wonder 7: Adorer of ChristIn our Consecration book, Father Don Calloway described how wherever St. Joseph traveled with his wife and Son, their home naturally became an Adoration chapel. St. Joseph contemplated the divine presence of Jesus Christ in Nazareth, Bethlehem and Egypt and welcomed others to do the same. That makes St Joseph the founder of Adoration chapels and, with his wife, is the first to conduct a procession with the Body and Blood of Christ!

Saint Joseph went in haste with Mary to Bethlehem which means “house of bread” so that the bread of eternal life might be born there. –Venerable Joseph Mindszenty

So who were the very first visitors to the first Adoration chapel? It was the shepherds of course and then the Wise Men! Once the Holy Family settled in Nazareth, St. Joseph and Mary adored the divine presence of Jesus in their home for decades. As Father Calloway says, “Their home was essentially a house of Perpetual Adoration and uninterrupted contemplation, even while they carried out all the daily tasks and chores of domestic life.” Now that’s something to contemplate!

Become an Adorer like St. Joseph! When we consider the incredible grace Joseph received by living in the presence of Jesus, we can begin to understand the benefits that flow from regular Eucharistic Adoration. Are you being called? Consider visiting the church on Wednesdays between 1:00 pm and 4:00 pm to sit with Jesus. He is waiting for you there.

seek, share, rejoice - creation care ministry...EARTH DAY--March 27, 2021

Restore Our Common HomeEarth Day is one day each year where millions of people across the world together seek to raise awareness of the issues facing our planet and its environs. Consistent with Pope Francis teachings in “Laudato Si”, this year’s theme for Earth Day is “Restore

Our Common Home,” a theme that will address how as people of faith we must urgently act to not only protect but restore God’s beautiful gift of creation.

That theme is based on the emerging concept that we have options to save the planet in addition to mitigating the impacts of climate change and other environmental damage. Scientists, non-governmental organizations, business, and governments worldwide now are looking at natural system processes and emerging green technologies to restore the world’s ecosystems and forests, conserve and rebuild soils, improve farming practices, restore wildlife populations and rid the world’s oceans of plastics.

While the world waits for global political and business leaders to take decisive action to reduce carbon emissions, natural processes including reforestation and soil conservation can store massive amounts of carbon while restoring biodiversity, clean water and air and rebalancing ecological systems. Restoration is pragmatic and necessary to reduce climate change.

Restoration also brings hope, itself an important ingredient in the age of COVID-19. The impacts of the

pandemic have illustrated with painful clarity that the planet faces two crises and they are connected: global environmental degradation and its connection to our health. Deforestation, wildlife trade, air and water pollution, human diets, climate change and other issues have all fed into a degradation of our natural systems, leading to new and fatal diseases, such as the current pandemic, and a weakening of the global economy.

Hundreds of millions around the globe took part in activations for the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, inspired by Earth Day 2020’s theme of Climate Action. Earth Day now turns that progress, enthusiasm, and resilience toward the 2021 theme of Restore Our Earth.

For our families of OLPH, we can participate in a Catholic Climate Covenant sponsored 1-hour prayer and educational program on Earth Day. It is a perfect way to prepare for the Vatican’s launch of the “Laudato Si” Action Platform in May, 2021. The program will contain prayers, readings, a short video, and activities for your family. Register by going to the following website to receive the program in your inbox by mid-March:

https://catholicclimatecovenant.org/program/earth-day

In addition, as you may have noticed in the recent Village of Glenview Report, one more action you can take is to turn off your lights at 8:30 PM on Earth Day, March 27, 2021, for 1-hour in solidarity with the world in recognizing Earth Day!

We can do this OLPH! God Bless you and God’s Creation.
