...from Deep roots

Hello and Welcome:

How time flies. It just seems like yesterday we were getting ready for our tenth festival (which by the way was tremendously successful) and here we are stepping into a new decade. Like a fine wine, I think we are growing better with age.

Of course we we are very grateful for the tremendous support we receive from our many sponsors and donors. I would especially like to acknowledge the financial assistance that we have gotten from all levels of government – municipal, provincial, and federal - they are always huge supporters of the Arts.

Our festival would also not be possible without the hard work of all of our Deep Roots volunteers. Some have been with the organiza-tion from the beginning, and others are joining us for the first time. Whether you are a rookie or a returning volunteer, you should know how much we appreciate your dedicated support. On behalf of the Deep Roots Board of Directors thank you all.

Speaking of long-serving volunteers, Dave Carmichael has once again programmed what I think is a stellar lineup. He has brought together an incredible sampling of local, provincial, and national talent, and I am sure you will agree. There will definitely be something for everyone – I think you are going to have a hard time deciding which venues to attend.

Of course, all the work that goes into creating and hosting this wonderful event comes to fruition when you, our audience, share the music with us. Our thanks to you for coming out and supporting us. You make it all worthwhile.

...from AcADiA University

since the very beginning of the Deep Roots Music Festival, Acadia University has been a proud supporter and partner. For 175 years,

Acadia has benefited from its connection to the Annapolis Valley, home to some of our province’s most gifted artists and performers. Deep Roots is well on its way to establishing its own legacy since its debut in 2003, so I would like to welcome you to our community and invite you to enjoy the hospitality and warmth of the people who are fortunate enough to call this place their home. Congratulations once again to the organizers and volunteers of Deep Roots for your hard work and dedication to making the festival such a great success. On behalf of everyone at Acadia, I hope you enjoy Deep Roots 2014, and I look forward to having you on our campus again soon.

GReen festiVal

Hi from the Green team!

f or ten years, Deep Roots Music Festival has been

proud to be a ‘green’ festival, and this year is no different. This means that not only do we sort our waste accord-ing to Nova Scotia’s waste management strategy, but we work to reduce our waste too, especially when it comes to plastic. We encourage our volunteers and performers to bring their own reusable water

bottles to the Festival, and you can too! Festival-goers can refill water bottles at water stations, available at various venues. Of course, there are recyclable cups available for your use as well. Green Team personnel will be on hand (often nearby one of our many recycling sta-tions) to answer any questions you might have about staying GREEN at the Deep Roots Music Festival!

≠ ≠ ≠ Darrin Harvey ≠ ≠ ≠

congratulations to the winner of our 2014 valley Arts Award!

The Valley Arts Award is pre-sented each year at the Deep Roots Music Festival to honour someone who lives (or has lived) in this area, and has made signifi-cant long-term contributions to the Arts in the Annapolis Valley. We are happy to announce that Darrin Harvey is this year’s Valley Arts Award recipient.

Darrin is a veteran broadcaster with over twenty years’ experi-ence in both radio and TV. But his first love is live music. Darrin frequents live music shows and festivals of all genres in and around Nova Scotia and across the country. He is the lead singer and harmonica player for the “No Name Blues Band” and also performs with “Bluesmobile”. Both bands are known to perform for charitable purposes. In his spare time, Darrin finds time to study guitar.

Darrin was a contributor to the Friends of the Kentville Library for three years and he served on the executive of the Alliance of Kings Artists from 2005 to 2009. Now he is known for hosting Deep Roots events throughout the year and dur-ing the festival as well as giving freely of his time to new artists. This Hants County native helps to promote countless bands, hosts a multitude of CD releases, and boosts local music throughout the region and the province.

Along with a radio career that has largely taken place in the Annapolis Valley, Darrin was also producer/researcher on the syndicated blues show, “The Blues Own”. He is the mid-day host on 89.3 K-Rock and hosts “East Coast Music Unplugged” on Eastlink TV. This is his second series with Eastlink and his third role as a TV host (including duties on The Fight Network series, “Wrestling Reality”). Season two of “East Coast Music Unplugged” will start in October.

Deep Roots has enjoyed years of collaborating with this eminent promoter of music in the Valley and we look forward to years more of collaboration in the future. Congratulations Darrin and great work!

mUsic At wolfville liBrAryfriday, sept 26, 2pmJoin us for a new acoustic mini concert, featuring Teresa Doyle (with an opening set by local musician Donna Holmes), at the Wolfville Memorial Library on Elm Street. This century old building was once Wolfville’s Railroad Station. If the weather’s nice, we’ll be out back on this historical train station’s platform. If the weather’s yucky, we’ll fill the book aisles with music.

teresa Doyle“With both a flexible and distinctive vocal range, Doyle effortlessly carves a niche as one of the most innovative interpreters of Canadian folk songs.” - Rock’n’Reel, England. See Teresa’s bio on Pg 40 for more info about this inspiring songstress.

Donna holmesDonna sings jazz standards with the Annapolis Big Band at wineries, festivals, and in places called Paradise. She sings and writes musical theatre songs for Broken Leg Theatre – a show she produces three times a year at the Al Whittle (one of our Deep Roots venues). And she sings and writes folk music for the open mic that she hosts every Tuesday night at TAN Coffee in Wolfville. She’s also a clown. :o)

s ince 2011, Deep Roots Music Festival has been proud to support the Wolfville and Area Food Bank through our Sunday morn-

ing ‘Rise Up Singing’ concerts. This year, we are determined to make the largest contribution yet! You can help by donating non-perishable food items (like pasta, canned fruit & vegetables, butter, tomato sauce, etc) and, of course, cash for this important cause.

Pete Seeger sang for social justice issues that encourage others to Rise Up Singing and work for peace & human rights. Pete passed away this year. We have a stellar line up ready to entertain in his style, including James Keelaghan, Ruth Moody, Jaron Freeman-Fox, Shawna Caspi and Kim Barlow. Join us for this tribute to Pete Seeger and the causes he worked for and the opportunity to tell him ‘goodbye’ with good music and shared food for those in need.

The smudging ceremony involves the burning of special, sacred plants and herbal resins. Then, the object is either passed through the resulting smoke, or the smoke is fanned around the person or place. The spirits of the plant then purify whatever is being smudged.

Deep roots Kicks off at Union street café

thursday, september 25

in beRwick The 2014 Deep Roots Music Festival will begin in one of the Valley’s quintessential music venues, and one that is dear to our hearts – the Union Street Café, Berwick. This homey restaurant and pub is run by the daughters of Deep Roots founders, Don and Anna Osburn. The hospitality can’t be beat, the food is fresh, local and delicious and the entertainment is always top-notch. Thanks to a partnership with Jenny and Meagan, our Kick-off Show with Bob Snider, Brent Mason and Tom Gallant starts at 8pm, September 25. Call 902-538-3442 to book your tickets. ($20)

Kim is an enduring presence in the Canadian indie-folk scene. She’s recorded six albums of her own work, and she’s a two-time Juno nominee. Playing guitar and clawhammer banjo, Barlow creates rich and unex-pected settings for her fables of lost children, allegories for love and loss, and examinations of the natural world and the other-worldly. Having recently returned to Nova Scotia after

years in the Yukon, with twin babies in the house, she’s been on hiatus from the touring circuit but is writing new songs at a rapid rate and currently planning recordings and shows.

Geoff has often been the unassuming guy tucked in behind the drumkit laying down the solid rhythmic founda-tion, but he has another side. He’s a songwriter, a singer with an incredible voice, and a more than adequate guitar-ist. He has released two solo recordings: “This Ain’t No Fiction” (2006) and “Voodoo Baby Rattle” (recorded at the

legendary Echo Chamber, in Halifax, with Charles Austin in February 2014). The songs on both recordings are based on very subtle grooves, with a Tony Joe White vocal style, and guitar work reminiscent of JJ Cale.

rs This folk ensemble is com-posed of four musicians hailing from across Canada, who began their journey together at McGill University. Although classically trained, the group draws from Québecois, Irish, and bluegrass folk influences. Their 2012 debut album “Fill Your Boots!” features their clear French and English harmonies as well as guitar, flute, bass and fiddle. Their cinematic folk

performance shines through on “Grassy Roads, Wandering Feet”, their latest album which includes the addition of man-dolin, banjo, harmonica, and a variety of Irish whistles.

Shawna sings of love, travel, home, and heart, distilling each experience into a series of vibrant snapshots, coloured with humour and grace, and arranged with care and craft. With her powerful voice, serious guitar chops, and commanding stage presence, she doesn’t need a band to deliver her engaging and ener-getic shows. Her latest release, “Apartments for Lovers”, is a

solo guitar and voice album that showcases her rich voice and remarkable fingerstyle guitar technique; a contrast to her two earlier releases that featured a collection of session players and elaborate arrangements.

and volunteers. We invite you to join us and help establish the Cooperative and Festival. We’re down to earth here and we get together every now and then to enjoy each other’s company and sing a song or two. Our aim as a cooperative, is to present regular concerts, nurture local musicians, support other local arts organizations and worthy community projects, and produce the annual Canadian Deep Roots Music Festival - and while we’re at it, have a whole lot of fun!

Call the Deep Roots office at 902-542-ROOT (7668), or visit deeprootsmusic.ca for more information on how you can become a Deep Roots member and/or a volunteer for next year’s Deep Roots Music Festival.

finale lyrics

CHORUS:

All night, all day, Angels watching over me my Lord

All night, all day, Angels watching over me

Now I lay me down to sleep (Angels watching over me my Lord)

I pray the Lord my soul to keep (Angels watching over me)

CHORUS

If I die before I wake (Angels watching over me my Lord)

I pray the Lord my soul to take (Angels watching over me)

CHORUS

Sun is a-setting in the West (Angels watching over me my Lord)

Sleep my child, take your rest (Angels watching over me)

all niGHt, all DaY
