John 6:27 Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed.

Everlasting life. Not something to be achieved but to be received by faith in Christ (see vv.28-29) see also note on

3:15). Son of man. See note on Mark 8:31. Submission of the Son to the Father is one of John’s major themes (see note

on 4:34).

John 6:28 Then said they unto him, what shall we do, that we might work the works of God?

What shall we do…? They missed the point that eternal life is Christ’s gift and were thinking in terms of achieving it by

pious works Pious- devout, religious, virtuous, moral, sincere, spiritual,

reverent, holy, saint, godly, dutiful, impious, irreverent, self-righteous, sanctimonious, holier-than-thou, goody-goody,

moralizing, hypocritical and smug

John 6:29 Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.

Work of God. Believing in Jesus Christ is the indispensable “work” God calls for—the one that leads to eternal life.I John 3:23And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment.
