WHEN YOU PAY YOUR DUES, WOULD YOU PLEASE PRINT CLEARLY YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS? If

each Knight would do this every year, we could make sure the Knightliner gets out to

everyone.

NEW NEWS ABOUT OLD NEWS

The fishing Derby was a great success. The rains stayed away. No monsters were caught,

but twice as many fish as last year were. The winners were: Ted Decker, biggest fish (4lb

11 oz catfish); Matt Wise, biggest Crappie (11.5 inches); and Eric Will, biggest Bass (1.7

lb). Each received $80 in prize money. See pictures at the end of this issue.

NEWS We enrolled four new knights in the past month: Keaton Clouse, Harley Hawkins, Todd Fleischmann and Vernon Beal (transfer and reactivation). Give these Knights a howdy and shake hands with each if you see them. Welcome all! The Tootsie Roll Drive is Oct 4th-6th. Hopefully, you will get this before that date. Give Tom Theisen a call if you can help. Or, just show up at the church maintenance building at 3:30 pm Friday or 8 am Saturday for an assignment. Tom has prepared some excellent food for the workers. If nothing else, come work for food. The Blood Drive is here again! Oct 25th, 2-7 pm, in the church basement as usual. You can sign up on line or call Ken Hansen 816-805-2381 for an appointment. If you are worried about a long wait without an appointment, there is seldom any waiting except for right at 2pm. You can be in and out in an hour most of the time. See Info following Ken’s Korner on the Good Old Boy Shootout and the Halloween Party.

Nothing says Halloween like a visit from a bunch of vampires sucking your blood on September 25th at the K of C blood drive. I’ve used that gag so often I thought it might be interesting to study up on the history of vampires.

Even in ancient Greece and Rome there was a belief of sorts in beings that would eat the blood of humans. These

creatures, whatever they were, would not be recognizable now to us as vampires.

Christians were considered evil by some Romans as the Romans thought Christians consumed the blood of humans.

They were half-right. We are blood drinkers but we drink the blood of God.

In the early 1700s, Eastern Europeans really started to believe in and fear vampires. There were some deaths at the

time attributed to vampires. A couple of authors before Bram Stoker wrote novels about vampires. Stoker hit pay dirt

with his book which was very popular. He wrote thirteen other novels but most folks cannot name one of them. Then

the movies came--the rest is history of sorts. Count Dracula was a real character, but he was noted as a bloodthirsty

defender of Christian Europe when he impaled Muslim Turks on stakes at the border of his country. Dracula taking the

form of a bat is in error in as much as there are no vampire bats in Europe.

Where did people get their beliefs in the undead? It is possible some of the natural decomposition of bodies had

something to do with it. Grave robbers disturbing graves may have added to the belief that vampires had risen from

their coffins in the night. Burying people who were presumed dead but weren’t may have also played a part when these

folks woke up in their coffins and tried to claw their way out. Thanks to embalming--we don’t have to worry about going

to the grave anything less than dead.

There were a couple of rare diseases that caused folks to have a ruddy look and caused them to ooze some blood from

their mouths and other parts. One of these was the bleeding disease hemophilia which is basically a genetic disorder

that European Royalty suffered especially the family of the Russian Czars.

Graves have been discovered in recent times with stakes driven into the hearts of the dead. Some skeletons were

discovered with their jaws jacked wide open with rocks and stakes stuck in their mouths. It is assumed this was done to

prevent them from biting down on anything when they woke up.

One seldom mentioned remedy for vampirism was to spread sand or fine seed over the grave of a vampire. For some

reason, it was believed a vampire could not be about his mischief until he counted every grain of sand or seed. This is a

bit ironic considering The Count on Sesame Street (who we believe was named after Count Dracula) spends his life

counting things. Did Jim Henson know this when he created his character?

That bit of lore has never been repeated as a remedy to vampires in any movie I know. I guess busting a bag of seed of a

vampire’s head does not have the same dramatic effect as a stake through the heart. Remember, the head vampire will

be looking for you and any friends you can bring donate blood to the Blood Drive on Friday, October 25!

Joke of the Month

An atheist was seated next to a dusty old cowboy on an airplane and he turned to him and said, “Do you want to talk? Flights go quicker if you strike up a conversation with your fellow passenger.”

The old cowboy, who had just started to read his book, replied to the total stranger, “What would you want to talk about?”

“Oh, I don’t know,” said the atheist. “How about why there is no God, or no Heaven or Hell, or no life after death?” as he smiled smugly.

“Okay,” he said. “Those could be interesting topics but let me ask you a question first. A horse, a cow, and a deer all eat the same stuff – grass. Yet a deer excretes little pellets, while a cow turns out a flat patty, but a horse produces clumps. Why do you suppose that is?”

The atheist, visibly surprised by the old cowboy's intelligence, thinks about it and says, “Hmmm, I have no idea.”

To which the cowboy replies, “Do you really feel qualified to discuss God, Heaven and Hell, or life after death, when you don’t know crap?”

Annual Harvest Dinner The Altar Society are again sponsoring the Harvest Dinner on Sunday, November 3. Several Knights have already volunteered to help with dishwashing. Many more helpers including youth are needed to make this event a great success. Please sign up on the clipboards in the church vestibule as the dinner date gets closer or contact Karen Dexter at (816) 797-0823 (or through Paul Dexter (816) 416-0752), Beckie Boyle 816 676-8304, or Rose Beal at (816) 718-6059. Thanks in advance for your help through donations, help, and support! Please attend t this Parish event and enjoy the turkey dinner!

Halloween is near and this old vampire is feeling poorly these days. Doc says my color isn’t good. I need some blood to put color in my cheeks.

Come on down and donate a pint! Friday, October 25th between 2-7pm. I will be hiding in the Good Shepherd Church basement. I will trade you some blood for some Nutter Butters or Oreos.

Knight Watchman Reminder: We have a group called the Knight Watchman who will house sit for a funeral in the Knights/Good Shepherd family. If you want to volunteer for this group, please contact Bill Clouse and he will put you on the list. Also: If you need this service, please contact Bill Clouse. He will be the only point of contact for this service. His phone number is 816-260-8739.

Our Council now has a web site. Please take a look at www.kofc9272.com. This site makes our work and purpose available for any interested person to see. It also hooks our Council into the State and National Knights of Columbus sites. Editor’s note: Mike Thompson has done an excellent job putting this together. It is quite a useful site and besides doings in our own council it ties us to events in the rest of the state. One of the more useful tools is a page where you can add your service hours as you do them. This is much better than the paper slip we are given at the end of the year, which leaves most folks trying hard to remember what they did and then trying even harder to remember to turn it in. Knights of Columbus Insurance Our Insurance Agent, Jorge Orosco, has moved on to a different company. We hope to continue the insurance agent column in the future after our new agent gets settled in.
