Pie is the star at Zephyrhills festivalBy Michael [email protected]

Chocolate cream, co-conut cream, bananacream, apple, cherry, pumpkin, pecan, raspber-ry and key lime. If thatsounds like a roll call ofpopular pies, that’s exact-ly what it is.

Those pies and morewere on display Jan. 24 atthe inaugural ZephyrhillsPie Festival & CommunityBake Off at Zephyr Park,38116 5th Ave., inZephyrhills.

If an entire day cele-brating one specificdessert seems over thetop, event coordinatorSonya Bradley said it’s ac-tually an overdue tributeto a family favorite.

“It’s just fun,” she said.“Old school, traditional fes-tivals are fun.” Bradley hasfond memories of holidayswhen older family mem-bers would bake and bringpies to dinner, and shewanted to create a fun at-mosphere for adults andchildren to sample a vari-ety of pies.

And people wereeager to do just that, withmore than 2,000 in atten-dance to participate indifferent interactiveevents. There was a pie-baking contest, withwinner Orma Moon taking home somemoney and a trophy thanks to her victoriouscranberry-apple creation.

There was also a pie buffet, where visi-tors could enjoy all the pie and ice creamthey could eat for one set price. Those who

didn’t want all pie all the time were able tosample more traditional carnival food at var-ious stations.

The pie festival also included a live bandand more than 50 vendors promoting crafts, jewelry, candles and even animal conserva-tion. While the vendors offered a variety of

products and information, Bradley said itwas important for the festival, which fea-tured free admission and parking, to be

more than visiting booths and hearingmusic. The contest and buffet were impor-tant aspects in bringing people together.

“It forces interaction, which makes the fes-tival so much fun,” she said. In a way, it was toomuch fun: A scheduled pie-eating contest hadto be scrapped when the buffet proved to beso popular that they didn’t have enough pies.

Bradley’s Simply Events put the festivaltogether, which is just one event the compa-ny has planned for Zephyr Park. They’ll alsooversee the Snowbird Palooza event, gearedtoward residents who migrate downs toZephyrhills for part of the year, at the samelocation next month.

According to Bradley, the turnout was sogood that residents can probably expect an-other one next year, with more pies on handto meet the large demand.

“It’s been crazy. It’s great,” she said as shewas shuttling pies to eager judges. “We did-n’t expect all this.”

FRED BELLET/PHOTOSOrma Moon of Zephyrhills, right, took first place at the baking contest with her cranberry-apple pie. Wendy Orbeck and John Cadwell took second and third.

Brendan Porter, 5, takes in some berry pie atthe buffet in Zephyr Park.

The Florida Department of Transportationis looking into the possibility of building ex-press toll lanes to give drivers an option to paymore to travel through areas more quickly.

The concept has been used in other partsof the nation, and now state transportation of-ficials want to determine whether that traffic

management concept is a good one forTampa Bay.

It works like this: Express toll lanes arebuilt next to existing non-toll lanes on inter-states. The cost for using them is based ondemand.

State transportation officials are now de-veloping a master plan of express toll laneson the interstate system called the Tampa Bay

Express (TBX). The interstates under study for TBX in-

clude Interstate 275 from south of GandyBoulevard to north of Bearss Avenue,Interstate 4 from I-275 to west of PolkParkway, and I-75 from State Road 674 tonorth of Bruce B. Downs Boulevard.

The express lane concept is already inplace in Los Angeles, Houston, Atlanta, Miami

and other cities, where it has led to less trafficcongestion.

A public workshop will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Jan. 29, at TPepin’s HospitalityCentre, 4121 N. 50th St., in Tampa, to explainthe concept to the public and to receivequestions.

Tax penalties for those without health insuranceBy Mike MatthewSpecial to The Laker / Lutz News

John Tolson, owner of TolsonInsurance, has been in the insurance busi-ness for 25 years. He has seen a lot ofchanges over the years but none as com-plicated and confusing as those caused byObama Care.

The government wantseveryone to be able to affordhealth coverage. They’re evenwilling to subsidize the insur-ance premiums for people withlower incomes. People withminimum wage jobs and noemployer-provided health carecan now afford health insur-ance.

Obama Care has also removed one ofthe biggest headaches for anyone withlong-term health problems, the pre-exist-ing condition. You will now receive cov-erage and care for problems that wouldhave previously been denied by the insur-ance company. This is a major step for-ward.

This new system is not without prob-lems. The application process is oftenconfusing and seemingly contradictory attimes. Insurance agents and companiesare dealing with weekly policy changes. The pool of providers has been reduced.

All of this makes one thing abundant-ly clear, you need an insurance agent tonavigate this process. John Tolson is anindependent broker with the knowledgeand expertise to help you select the bestoptions for your health, life, dental andMedicare coverage.

He will help you determine whetherit’s better to apply directly to the insur-

ance companies or through the market-place (Obama Care). With an under-standing of your situation and your needs,he’ll help you make the best choices.

John has lived in the Lutz area for 35years. His father, a licensed broker for 60years, brought him into the business.

“I’m an independent broker,” saysJohn. “This means that Iwork for the client, not aninsurance company. Thisenables me to provide thebest coverage for my clients.”

Open enrollment forhealth care coverage ends onFebruary 15. “If you don’thave health insurance, theIRS may fine you on your taxreturn,” says John. “This plan

won’t work if only sick people sign up, sothe government is going to fine peoplewho don’t have coverage.”

“People also need to understand thatthey won’t be able to sign up anytimethey want,” says John. “They need toapply during the open enrollment period. This policy is meant to prevent peoplefrom applying for insurance when theyhave a health problem.”

The next open enrollment periodwon’t occur until November 15 for cover-age to begin in 2016. The only exceptionis when you’re dropped from a group plan. You have 60 days after being dropped toapply.

Besides attracting thousands to enjoy thebarbecue and bands, the event on Jan. 17 atthe Zephyrhills Municipal Airport, also lured51 teams to compete to see who makes thebest barbecue. Thirty-nine teams competedat the professional level, and there were 12backyard barbecue teams, according to anews release issued by the chamber.

Figures have not been tallied, but organ-izers estimate the event exceeded last year’sproceeds of $30,000.

The money raised benefits local youthand education programs and communityservices of the Chamber of Commerce.

A crew of more than 100 volunteerspitched in to make the event a success. Many worked the entire week, some arriv-ing at dawn and staying past sunset, to getthings ready for the festival and to take itdown and clean up the grounds.

“Beyond even our own optimistic pro-jections, Pigz in Z’Hills belongs toZephyrhills,” Vonnie Mikkelsen, executivedirector of the chamber, said in an email.

“I’m thrilled by the positive outcome

and so very happy for the volunteers, theparticipants and the community who cametogether to make it happen,” she said.

There were thousands who arrived bycar, and at least 26 private aircraft took ad-vantage of the airport’s “Fly-in” option.

Besides enjoying barbecued foods ofmany styles, spectators had the chance tolisten to music performed by TC Carr &Bolts of Blue, The Lauren Mitchell Band,Doug Deming & The Jewel Tones and ColdIron.

The event venue was larger this year, too,to make room for increased demand forkids’ activities, vendors, a classic car show, and aviation and military history displays.

The Pigz in Z’Hills BBQ competition issanctioned by the Florida BBQ Associationand is a qualifier for three prestigious cham-pionship contests: the Jack Daniel’s WorldChampionship Invitational in Lynchburg -considered the Superbowl of BBQ contests;American Royal World Series of BBQ inKansas City - the world’s largest and oldestcontest; and the Sonny’s Smokin’Showdown Invitational - the FBA’s newestcontest.

It uses slides on a giant screen to informthose attending its weekend services whereto sit if they would like to receive a low-gluten host.

Anyone is welcome to sit in the section,Aubin said, but those sitting there will receivethe low-gluten host during communion.

Aubin described what it’s like: “It’s a littlesmaller and thinner. It basically has no taste.”

“If you object to that,” the pastor said,“Go to the other line.”

The church also is taking care to avoidany cross-contamination when people drinkfrom the chalice during communion.

“To help us not get them confused, weuse a silver chalice (for the wine) and a sil-

ver ciborium for the low-gluten (hosts),” hesaid. In other sections, the church uses agold chalice and gold ciborium.

Some people are now asking if they canhave a smaller piece of the low-gluten host,Aubin said.

“The low-gluten hosts don’t break easy. Itold the Sacristan to go buy a scissors anddesignate it for only cutting the low-glutenhosts,” he said.

The church wants to encourage partici-pation in the Eucharist. It also wants to be asaccommodating as possible.

“We’re responding,” he said.Members of the congregation appreciate

the effort, he added.“Several people have come out of their

way just to thank me. (They told me) ‘Thankyou for considering us.’”

ic investment council, which likely will havemembers possessing expertise in a varietyof fields, such as manufacturing, commer-cial/industrial, site selection, real estate andagriculture.

Commission Chairman Ted Schrader toldcounty staff that the council should includea representative from the health care indus-try.

“Health care obviously is the economicengine in Pasco County,” Schrader said. “Ithink that’s critically important.”

Pasco is notorious for the tens of thou-sands of residents who head out of thecounty for work in the morning and returnto the county at night.

It’s been trying to shake the image ofbeing a bedroom community for years andwants to use Penny for Pasco funds to injectenergy into the county’s economic develop-ment.

With so many people leaving the countyeach day, it’s obvious that Pasco has an avail-able work force, said Commissioner MikeMoore.

“What jobs are they leaving for?” Mooreasked. “That’s where our focus should be ini-tially.”

The primary goal of the trust fund is toattract jobs to Pasco, said Richard Gehring, the county’s planning and development ad-ministrator.

Gehring said the county has a number ofopportunities.

There’s a railroad corridor in East Pasco,as well as heavy industrial zoning, which thecounty could use to create new opportuni-ties, he said.

There are also buildings that can be recy-cled for other uses, he said.

The county needs to develop a methodfor scoring applications because those whoare not selected will want to know why,Gehring said.

The county is expected to generate $45million to $50 million for economic devel-opment through Penny for Pasco.

The goal is for the county to get a 4-to-1return on investment, said MelanieKendrick, senior planner for economic de-velopment in Pasco.

The county is going after jobs being gen-erated in the Tampa Bay region, with the aim

of Pasco becoming a prime player, Gehringsaid.

John Hagen, president and chief execu-tive officer of the Pasco EconomicDevelopment Council, said putting moneyinto acquiring an industrial site would notcreate jobs directly, but would set the stagefor that to happen.

Commissioner Kathryn Starkey wouldlike the county to invest in infrastructureinto areas where it could attract numerousend-users.

County Administrator Michele Baker saidthat allowing private applicants to make un-solicited applications could result inattracting potential development the countyhad not even imagined.

“Part of the problem is not knowingwhat ideas are out there that might comeforward,” Baker said. “We don’t know, whatwe don’t know.”

Hagen urged the county to adopt aprocess that is easy to understand.

“If it is too complicated or too difficult, people will go, ‘I can’t deal with that,’”Hagen said.

Since the board cannot take action at aworkshop, the Jan. 20 session was intendedto give the staff additional direction beforepreparing a resolution to bring back for theboard’s consideration.

adding some restaurant owners have toldhim they do a week’s worth of business onthat single day.

Of course, the kumquat is king at thisevent, and vendors offer it up in myriadforms. There’s kumquat pie, kumquat salsas, kumquat jam, kumquat jelly, kumquat pre-serves, and even kumquat lotions and soaps.

Over the years, the event has helped putDade City on the map and has helped raisethe community’s profile. It was heralded bythe Pasco County Tourism Board as thePasco County Event of the Year in 2012 andhas enjoyed the distinction of being nameda “Top 20 Event” by the Southeast TourismSociety, which selects premier events in 13Southeastern states.

Offering the event without charging anadmission means that organizers rely on thegenerosity of sponsors, income from vendorfees and support achieved through otherfundraising efforts.

This year, Florida Hospital Zephyrhills isthe event’s headlining sponsor, Moors said.

Besides providing financial support, thehospital is a partner with the Tampa BayBuccaneers, so the team will be sending itsbus as well as cheerleaders and a player or

two, Moors said. The importance of the sponsors cannot

be overstated, Moors said. They make it possible for event organiz-

ers to stage the festival without admissionor parking charges, Moors said.

“There’s a lot of expense in puttingsomething like this on. Somebody has to payfor the buses and the Port-o-lets and the in-surance and the volunteer expenses,” the

chamber executive said.To get the full enjoyment out of the

event, Moors recommends that people ar-rive early.

“Get in and get settled and enjoy the day.”The festival is held, rain or shine.Moors is optimistic that the weather will

cooperate.“Bring an umbrella,” he said. “You can al-

ways leave it in the car.”

KUMQUAT, from page 1A

John Hagen, president and chief executiveofficer for the Pasco Economic DevelopmentCouncil, said the county should devise aprocess that’s easy to understand, or poten-tial applicants will decline to take part.

The Florida Department of Transportationis looking into the possibility of building ex-press toll lanes to give drivers an option to paymore to travel through areas more quickly.

The concept has been used in other partsof the nation, and now state transportation of-ficials want to determine whether that trafficmanagement concept is a good one forTampa Bay.

The express lane concept is already inplace in Los Angeles, Houston, Atlanta, Miamiand other cities, where it has led to less trafficcongestion.

A public workshop will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Jan. 29, at TPepin’s HospitalityCentre, 4121 N. 50th St., in Tampa, to explainthe concept to the public and to receivequestions.

The Laker/Lutz News Staff Report

Florida is known for its lightning andrain. And with that can come flooding —which many people dismiss as not beingsomething to worry about.

Yet, 18 to 24 inches of moving water canwash an SUV off the road, according to theNational Weather Service. And more thanhalf of all flood-related deaths are peopledriving through flooded roads.

The nonprofit Federal Alliance for SafeHomes is reminding residents that whenroads are flooded, to turn around and don’tdrown.

It also offers these tips for both beforeand during floods. All it takes is a few inchesof water to cause major damage to a home, the organization said.

• Clear yard of any debris, plant materialor other items like garden décor, foliage, orgarbage cans, that can block water flow andstorm drains.

• Place important papers — like birth and

marriage certificates, passports, bank and insur-ance information — in a watertight container.Take photographs or videos to create an inven-tory of personal possessions, and keep thecamera card handy in case of evacuation.

• Identify and move electronics andother expensive items like computers, tele-visions and area rugs, on lower levels of thehome, and elevate if possible to keep dry.

• Avoid flooded areas or those with rapidwater flow. Do not attempt to cross a flow-ing stream, as it takes just 6 inches offast-flowing water to sweep someone offtheir feet.

• Don’t allow children to play near highwater, storm drains, or ditches. Hidden dan-gers could lie beneath the water.

• Flooded roads could have significantdamage hidden by floodwaters. Never drivethrough floodwaters or on flooded roads.

• Be especially cautious at night when itis harder to see flooded roads.

Land O’ Lakes basketball preps another playoff runBy Michael [email protected]

When the Land O’ Lakes girls’ basketballteam bowed out of the Class 5A playoffs lastyear, they had many reasons to be proud. The Gators were beaten in the state semifi-nals by eventual-champion Southeast HighSchool from Bradenton, and they completedtheir third-straight winning season undercoach Phyllis Crain. Since they had gone far-ther than any girls’ basketball team in schoolhistory, students and fans might wonder ifthey could repeat that success and possiblyclaim a state title this year.

But with the playoffs starting, the coachisn’t focused on anything but the next op-ponent.

“We don’t look any further than we haveto. We look at one game at a time, and wetake it from there,” Crain said. “If you over-look an opponent, they can sneak upbehind you.”

Very few teams have snuck up on LandO’ Lakes this season. They finished their reg-ular season campaign with just three losses, fewer than last year. They ran the table inClass 5A-8 with a perfect 14-0 record. Andaccording to Crain, they enter the postsea-son with even more confidence after lastseason’s accomplishments.

While senior Jhade Hayes has paced theteam as both leading scorer and rebounder, the coach believes it’s the other playersdoing their jobs and playing important rolesthat allow skilled players like Hayes toshine, and the team to succeed in eachgame.

“It’s teamwork, not an individual that’sgoing to win the championship. They reallybelieve in each other,” she said.

The school has good reason to believe inCrain, who has built a strong program in herfour seasons at the helm. After nine seasonsas an assistant at the University of Tampa, she came to Land O’ Lakes High Schoolwanting to create a team that consistentlyhas both experienced players and youngertalent who can contribute and take on lead-ership roles later in their careers. Thisseason’s team has a good mix of returningstarters and reserves (the starting five con-sists of three seniors and two juniors), aswell as newer players who are looking tohelp continue the team’s forward progress.

As a result, Crain believes the team is atleast as good as the one that was one step

away from the state championship game.“I would say as good, and maybe a little

bit better,” Crain said. “We have a little bitmore rebounding presence inside.” A lot ofthat increased presence can be attributed tojunior Gabby Mills, which makes the teammore dangerous when she’s on the court. But as they head to the playoffs, the coachwants to see better team rebounding andtighter defensive play from the Gators.

While Crain has created a perennial con-tender in just a few short years, it’s not heronly goal when it comes to coaching. She’saware that many of her players might not

continue their basketball careers in college,so she wants them to get the most out oftheir high school experience.

“I went into it thinking that I really wantto teach these girls the game of basketball, and I really want to teach them some lifelessons, too,” Crain said. “Don’t get mewrong. We all want to win. But I really thinkit’s an experience.” The coach follows theiracademic progress and believes that learn-ing lessons like not being late to practice, working hard and believing in yourself willhelp them off the court.

But the team is performing well on the

court, too. Another season with more than20 wins is already secured, and another play-off berth is looming. And while Crainbelieves the team has the ability to make an-other deep run, she doesn’t want players tothink about anything but the hard work thatgot them this far, and about the next oppo-nent they face.

“We want to win the district champi-onship. We want to get back to Lakeland(where the state championships will beheld). That’s our main focus,” she said “But todo that, we need to focus on the little thingsand take it game by game,” she said.

FRED BELLET PHOTOLand O’ Lakes coach Phyllis Crain has guided the girls’ basketball team to another season with more than 20 wins. Now she’ll try to guidethem back to the state tournament, where they reached the semifinals last season.
