Many people call it Halloween. For oth-ers, it’s a fall festival. Whatever you call it, it’sa time for special events and things to do inyour area.
Some are a bit frightening and geared to-ward adults. Others are fun and featureactivities for children. There might begames, treats and maybe a few scares, butthere’s something for everyone.
And while Halloween is at the end ofOctober, many events start much sooner. You have a whole month to find fun activi-ties for the entire family.
Here’s a rundown of treats (no tricks)happening this month:
Fall Family Festival at Saint LeoUniversity. The university, 33701 StateRoad 52, will host a number of activitiesOct. 9 through Oct. 11. There are free andlow-cost athletic events, like volleyball andsoccer. But the real treats start Oct. 10 at 11a.m., when Saint Leo will host a free fair atThe Bowl area (behind the StudentCommunity Center) with plenty of family-oriented things to do. Children can enjoy ananimal show, petting zoo, water races, aswing ride and other activities. It runs until3 p.m.
Another fun event takes place on cam-pus Oct. 10 at 9:30 p.m. There will be afireworks grand finale at The Bowl to cap offa weekend of events. And it’s free to attend.
Technically, the last event occurs Oct. 11
at 11 a.m., also at The Bowl. The universitywill host a 5K walk/run to benefit the Make-A-Wish foundation.
For more information about the race anda list of events for the Family Fall Festival, visit SaintLeo.edu/FallFamily.
Scarecrow Festival at FloridaPioneer Museum. The museum, 15602Pioneer Museum Road, hosts this scarecrow-themed event on Oct. 10 for the third yearin a row, after taking it over fromDowntown Dade City Main Street.Thousands of people attend each October, and they expect this year’s event to be nodifferent.
Crafts, community booths and food ven-dors will be on hand, but there’s a lot moreto the Scarecrow Festival than that. Likemaking scarecrows, for example. For $3,children can use hay and clothing, providedby the museum, to make a scarecrow totake home.
There will also be a Touch-a-Truck area, where children can climb on firetrucks andTECO trucks, and see police and sheriff’scars, and ambulances. A petting zoo, trainrides, face painting, obstacle course andgames with prizes are all part of the event, too.
But since this is the Scarecrow Festival,do you need more scarecrows? How abouta scarecrow costume contest? There willbe categories for best dressed scarecrow, cutest scarecrow and scariest scarecrow. So you can make one and be one at thisevent.
The Scarecrow Festival runs from 9 a.m.until 4 p.m. Admission is $5 with childrenyounger than five years old admitted free. For more information, call (352) 567-0262,or visit PioneerFloridaMuseum.org.

Stepping into the world of dementiaBy B.C. [email protected]
The tourists sat waiting for instructions. They filled out forms. They answered
questions. Then, they began putting on spe-cial equipment.
They put ridged plastic insoles into theirshoes.
They put on plastic gloves for protectionand a different outer glove for each hand.
Then, they stepped up a few steps into adim room, where they donned special head-phones and glasses.
Next, they were asked to perform a listof tasks.
Through the headphones they heardrecordings of chatter and continual noises. The glasses obscured their vision.
It didn’t take long to discover that the ex-periences on this “Virtual Dementia Tour”were disorienting and frustrating.
“I felt lost. I really felt lost,” Grace Walkersaid. “You can’t see, you can’t hear. You’remixed up,” said the woman who works inhousekeeping at American HouseZephyrhills, on Pretty Pond Road.
That’s understandable, said Glen
Scharfeld, a senior care specialist and ownerof Senior Helpers, based in Spring Hill.
His company brought a mobile VirtualDementia Tour to American HouseZephyrhills last week.
The Virtual Dementia Tour was createdby P.K. Beville, a geriatric specialist, as herpostgraduate work. It is a scientifically
proven method that builds sensitivity andawareness in individuals caring for thosewith dementia by temporarily altering par-ticipants’ physical and sensory abilities.
The tour is designed to simulate: • Loss of auditory interpretation and in-

Pasco County commissioners were intro-duced to a study that recommends buildinga multi-use indoor sports complex on park-land near The Shops at Wiregrass.
But a more in-depth review between theTourism Development Council and the com-missioners will have to wait for a publicworkshop slated for late October or earlyNovember.
At the Sept. 22 commissioners’ meeting,Charlie Johnson, president of Chicago-basedJohnson Consulting Co., spent a few minutesgoing over the firm’s report, officially re-leased in August.
“Economically, you’re healthy,” Johnsontold commissioners. “I think it’s (indoor facil-ity) very positive and trends are verysupportive of this.”
In addition to the indoor complex, ballfields also would be built outdoors, but thefocus, at least initially, would be on such in-door sports as volleyball, basketball, wrestling, cheerleading and martial arts.
Johnson cited facilities in Round Rock,Texas, and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, asexamples of municipalities with successfulindoor facilities.
The Porter family donated more than 200acres near the Wiregrass mall in 2012 with astipulation that if a sports complex didn’thappen, then a park would be developed.
But, just what to put on the land has elud-ed the county ever since.
Last year, a proposal from Pasco Sports
LLC, a partnership between James Talton andformer major league baseball player GarySheffield, fell apart over financial issues. Theproject would have included a youth base-ball camp, with 20 ball fields and on-sitedormitories.
The feasibility study, however, dismissesbaseball as a good option.
“This site is very attractive. The market isrobust enough to support some type of facil-ity.” Johnson said. “But, baseball and soccerare really quite built-out throughout thestate.”
The study suggests that Pasco would becompeting, for instance, with a $27 millioncomplex proposed in Seminole County. Thecomplex would include 15 ball fields forbaseball, softball, soccer and lacrosse.
Within the past week, a proposal to buildan Atlanta Braves training facility in St.Petersburg has emerged. The project alsowould include a youth baseball component. The Gary Sheffield Sports Foundation is oneof the partners in the project with theAtlanta Braves.
Some commissioners have suggested thatthe Porter family has concerns about the fea-sibility study.
“I think there is going to be some nega-tive feelings on this by the Porters,” saidPasco County Commissioner Jack Mariano.
Pasco County Administrator MicheleBaker said she had spoken with family mem-bers, and they would be invited toparticipate in the upcoming workshop.
“We’re committed to a very engaged andactive dialogue,” Baker said.
Vision still needed for sports complex

American War, when he was killed on Oct.29, 1900.
Pasco was a Baptist and a prominentMason. He was elected president of Florida’sConstitutional Convention in 1885. He alsoserved as Speaker of the Florida House ofRepresentatives in 1887.
During the 1880s, the southern part ofHernando County was filling rapidly withsettlers.
“We all were weary of traveling the sandtrails of Brooksville, the county seat, to at-tend court, or transact other business ofvaried nature,” Dr. Richard C. Bankston re-called, in a letter dated Nov. 25, 1927.
As a local member of the StateLegislature, Bankston’s recollections de-scribed the need for a new county. He also
noted there was opposition to the proposedname of “Banner County.”
At that time the Florida House andSenate were in joint session, voting for aUnited States Senator and they unanimouslyelected Pasco.
Bankston saw his opportunity.“I immediately went to the committee
room,” he wrote, “where I had a desk andchanged our bill making the name Pasco in-stead of Banner,” he wrote.
Within four hours on June 2, 1887, Gov.E. A. Perry signed into law a bill to divideHernando County and to create Citrus andPasco counties.
On June 9, 1899, President WilliamMcKinley appointed Pasco as a member ofthe Isthmian Canal Commission, the presi-dential committee that laid the groundworkfor construction of the Panama Canal.
Pasco made his first recorded visit to thecounty bearing his name during the StateFarmer’s Alliance meeting in Dade City onOct. 28, 1891.
One newspaper reported: “SenatorPasco, who was not barred from the meet-ing because of being a lawyer, went onrecord against the sub-treasury plan.”
Seven years later, Pasco appeared againin Dade City to attend a Democratic rallythat “was fairly well attended, consideringthe late hour at which it was held,” accord-ing to an account by another newspaper.
There are no records that Samuel W.Pasco ever lived in Pasco County.
But, for Pasco’s descendants, who attend-ed the Pasco County Centennial in 1987, itmust have been a proud occasion, to see thename of their ancestry on government of-fices, county vehicles and other locallandmarks.
Doug Sanders can be reached at [email protected].
Some of us may know a bit aboutwhere the names for Collier andFlagler counties came from.
But for those who don’t, it was BarronCollier who constructed the Tamiami Trailthrough the Everglades, connecting the twocoasts of Florida.
And, Henry Flagler was a key figure inthe development of the Atlantic coast ofFlorida as the founder of the Florida EastCoast Railway.
But how much do we know aboutwhere Pasco County got its name?
The county is named after Samuel W.Pasco, who was born in London, whenCharles Dickens was still a young newspa-per reporter for The Morning Chronicle.
Pasco was born in a family of Cornish an-cestry on June 28, 1834, some 200 feet fromSt. Paul’s Cathedral.
He immigrated to the United States withhis family and settled in Charlestown,Massachusetts in 1846.
A strong student, Pasco graduated fromHarvard College in 1858. He was recom-mended to a group of Southern Planters inJefferson County, Florida. They wanted toeducate their children with Pasco as thePrincipal of the Waukeenah Academy.
But that appointment didn’t last long. When Fort Sumter was bombarded at
the start of the Civil War three years later,Pasco closed the academy and, he alongwith 15 of his older students, enlisted in theConfederate army on August 10, 1861.
They served in the Third FloridaVolunteers.
One former student, Pvt. Tom Pettus, waswounded during a heavy exchange of fire inJuly 1863 near Jackson, Mississippi.
According to Clarence Smith’s wartimediary “Camp Fires of the Confederacy,” Pascosearched and found Pettus among thewounded during the heat of battle. AlthoughPettus died the next day, Pasco received acommendation from the vice president ofthe Confederacy.
He also spent a week in January 1863 inBrooksville to get some stragglers to returnto fight.
In the fall of that year, Pasco was left onthe field with his legs shattered by a lead
“minnie” bullet during the battle ofChickamauga, near Chattanooga, Tennessee.
Pasco was taken prisoner and spent near-ly six months in different hospitals beforebeing transferred to a Union Army prisoner-of-war camp in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Despite having Northern friends whotried to persuade him to take an oath of alle-giance to the Union, Pasco did not and washeld captive for 14 months, when he wasreleased in March 1865, as part of an ex-change of prisoners.
He was paroled with the rank of ser-geant.
In 1869, he married Jessie Denham ofMonticello, Florida. They had two daughtersand three sons. His son, William DenhamPasco, was a lieutenant in the Spanish-

Still no answer forsky-high water billsBy Kathy [email protected]
Some residents with unexplainably highwater fees will have to wait a bit longer tolearn what, if any, adjustments will be madeon their bills.
Pasco County commissioners first mustdecide how to amend existing rules regard-ing how the county issues credited refundsin cases involving a sudden spike in waterusage that defies explanation.
The county’s water department has rec-ommended that customers inthese cases would receive cred-its of as much as 50 percent, as aone-time only adjustment.
But, some commissionerswanted to slash bills even moreafter hearing from upset cus-tomers at their Sept. 22 meeting.
Pasco County CommissionerMike Wells was ready to “zeroout” at least one customer’s billfor more than $3,300. “We havean opportunity to do it right.”
However, Pasco CountyAttorney Jeffery Steinsnyder re-minded commissioners that thecounty is banned from giving away thewater it buys from Tampa Bay WaterAuthority.
Chairman Ted Schrader said the rulesshould be changed for all before granting re-lief in any one case. “You’re askingratepayers to subsidize their bills,” he said.
Pasco County Commissioner JackMariano said the water department’s planfell short.
“I’d like to see them brought down towhat a normal bill would be,” Mariano said.
In the next weeks, county officials planto set a public hearing for adopting a re-vised ordinance.
An audit by the county’s inspector gener-al’s office recently reviewed more than 300cases where customers were billed for high-er than average water usages. They couldqualify for refunds in cases of billing errorsor leaks. But the county’s rules don’t coverthe rare situations where the high waterusage is a mystery.
Louise Gritmon, who received that billfor more than $3,300, would be satisfiedwith paying her usual amount of around$40 a month.
Under the water department’s recom-mendation, her bill would only be cut to
about $1,600.“I’m going to keep fighting this,”
Gritmon said.Ramona Nelson also challenged her bill
for more than $562. Her monthly bills alsorun about $40, or slightly higher.
Nelson said there were no broken pipesor leaks, and no repairs needed at herhome. “I want my money back,” Nelsonsaid.
She has gotten a partial credit from thecounty, but still owes more than $360.
The county billed Gritmon and her hus-band in July 2014 for using614,000 gallons of water over 18days when their house was va-cant.
Gritmon maintains no leakswere found, and engineers havetold her it is impossible for thatmuch water to flow through herwater meter in that time frame. It would be the equivalent ofconsuming about 5 million plas-tic bottles of water, Gritmon toldcommissioners.
“I don’t disagree that it’smind-boggling,” said PascoCounty Utilities Director Bruce
Kennedy after the commissioners’ meeting. But, he added, “I don’t know that there wereany mistakes.”
He pointed to the audit’s findings thatthe county’s water meters were tested andfound accurate. Kennedy also said he hadto apply existing rules in determining re-funds.
It was Gritmon’s complaint last year thatprompted the eight-month audit.
While the audit found the metersworked properly, the report also found defi-ciencies in the county’s meter reading andbilling procedures. There also were prob-lems with software for a new automatedsystem, inaccessible meters and inconsistentreadings.
The audit looked at water bills issued be-tween June 1, 2014, and April 15, 2015. Of337 accounts reviewed by the county, 317,including Gritmon’s and Nelson’s, had fromone to six bills that exceeded 120 percentof the annual average charge.
Following the commissioners’ meeting,Kennedy walked over to Gritmon and of-fered an apology for the drawn-out process.
Gritmon said she appreciated the ges-ture.
“Better late than never.”

creased confusion• Loss of central and peripheral vision• Loss of sensory nerves and fine motor
skills• Onset of arthritis and neuropathy Beville donated the program to Second
Wind Dreams, which has provided the expe-rience worldwide.
An estimated 44.4 million people world-wide, including 5.2 million Americans, areliving with dementia, the Second WindDream’s website reports.
“The Virtual Dementia Tour is designed toemulate mid-level dementia,” Scharfeld said.
“We provide this education to the com-munity, to families, family caregivers. Thereason we’re here is that there are care-givers here who deal with dementia every
day. It’s designed to promote empathy andfor people to understand what people aregoing through,” he added.
The experience helps people step insidethe shoes of individuals who are living withdementia.
“We’re here to help you empathize withthem and be patient with them,” Scharfeldsaid, as he chatted with some staff membersfrom American House Zephyrhills, who hadjust completed the tour.
“We age. We get older. Our senses start todiminish. With dementia, it’s a whole differentballgame. What you’ve got to realize is thatthe brain, the brain cells are depleted in thedifferent areas of the brain,” Scharfeld said.
“It takes the most recent memories, andthey’re gone.
“People don’t remember stuff that justhappened. They may remember their daugh-ter as 30 years ago.
“They may think that they’re 30 yearsyounger than they are. They won’t believewhen they look in the mirror. It’s like, ‘Whois that? Who is that?’ You say, ‘That’s you.’ Andthey’ll say, ‘That’s not me. That’s an old lady,”he said.
Scharfeld is a retired law enforcement of-ficer, who worked in Hillsborough County. He used to encounter people with demen-tia when responding to calls.
“I didn’t know that when I was runningcode to a burglary in progress, (it was) be-cause a lady saw herself in the slider. Shethought there’s somebody out there.
“Or, they’ll think the people on the TVare actually in the house,” Scharfeld said.
The sounds coming through the head-phones enable those on the tour toexperience the kind of confusion that peo-ple with dementia have in processinginformation.
“The person is sitting there. They’re con-fused. Some caregivers think, if I talk louder, they’re going to get it.
It’s not the hearing. It’s the processing,”Scharfeld said.
“They hear bits and fragments. That’swhy they do crazy stuff. You ask someone tosomething, and they wind up doing some-thing else,” he said. “The caregiver gets madand frustrated.”
“We’re here to promote to you, empathy,”Scharfeld said.
The Virtual Dementia Tour has spread to17 different countries, he said.
“What we did is, we took it mobile,” hesaid. “We basically have a house on wheels. We’re independently owned. This is our rig.
“I wanted to bring it to the community,”he said.
To find out more about future stops onthe tour, call (352) 835-7191.

Scream-A-Geddon. This one isn’t forthe faint of heart. While many eventshave a little spookiness wrapped up in fami-
ly fun, this is an all-out fright fest. Locatedat 27839 Saint Joe Road in Dade City, theattractions have names like “CursedHayride,” “Dead Woods” and “Infected.” Thegoal is to be as ghoulish and scary as pos-sible.
But wait; there’s more. Like mosthaunted attractions, the actors don’t actu-ally touch you. But if you participate in“Pandemic” and choose the interactiveportion, it’s a different story. You might ac-tually be grabbed and sent into a cell. Thatoption takes things beyond the level ofestablished attractions like “Howl-O-Scream” at Busch Gardens or “HalloweenHorror Nights” and Universal Studios inOrlando.
You don’t have to choose that route,of course. You can decide to simply ob-serve, which means you’re hands-off tothe monsters inside. But, it’s still a scaryevent with five separate haunted attrac-tions.
And that doesn’t count the MonsterMidway, which includes games, food, beer, fire pits and tarot card readings. Thisis Halloween fun for people who like tobe scared. But just in case, each attractionhas emergency exits if things get a little
too intense. This might be the scariest event in the
area, so they’re expecting big crowds. Enterat your own risk.
Scream-A-Geddon is open Thursdaysthrough Sundays until Nov. 1. The costranges from $34.95 to $51.95 if you pur-chase online, depending on when you go.Tickets cost an additional $5 at the gate.Parking is $10, and fast passes, which allowyou to spend less time in line, are availableat an extra cost.

The volleyball season hasalready started for Pasco-Hernando State College, but coach Kim Whitney has-n’t attended their games. Shedoesn’t go to practice, either.
She hasn’t abandoned herteam. She’s just been a littlebusy.
Whitney gave birth to herson, Francis, on Aug. 26.
She hasn’t completely dis-appeared, though. Thatwould be tough for Whitney, who’s built a perennial re-gional contender over thepast decade. During hertenure, the Lady Quistas haveconsistency qualified fortheir regional tournament forDistrict P, which requires a.500 record or better overthe course of the regular sea-son. During that time, they’vealso qualified for five NJCAAnational tournaments, andtook home the Division II na-tional championship in 2010.
So while she’s caring forher son, she’s still keeping aclose eye on her squad.
“I’ve been working from home andkeeping in communication with the team, and with Brian,” Whitney said.
“Brian” is assistant coach Brian Kachurak, who’s been on the volleyball staff for sever-al years. He knows Whitney’s coachingphilosophy and is able to communicate herexpectations to the team until she returnsin early October.
Whitney has full confidence inKachurak, and said she knows the team is ingood hands.
They’ll need strong guidance as they
navigate the early part of their schedule. TheLady Quistas were 8-6 after 14 matches, enough to qualify for their regional tourna-ment by a small margin. But, Whitney isn’tconcerned. She’s not even surprised, sinceshe purposely scheduled difficult oppo-nents to open the season.
The Lady Quistas have already faced na-tionally ranked opponents, had close lossesagainst Division I competition, such asHillsborough Community College, and de-feated regular regional finalists CatawbaValley Community College.
The team has won some and lost some,
but it is testing itself early and proving it cancompete against elevated talent on thecourt, Whitney said.
That’s exactly what she wanted to seefrom her team.
“They’re all really good competition forus. It helps us to continue to grow, but itchallenges us. We don’t want to be playingteams that are easy run-throughs, and thenwe get to qualifying (matches for the nation-al tournament) and we’re shocked at thelevel of play,” she said. “It’s going to help usin the long run.”
It will also help the team learn how to
work together while under adversity.Frequent turnover is expected at a two-yearcollege, but Whitney’s team returns just sixplayers, and only half of those were starters. They’re playing with nine incoming fresh-men and a couple of transfers, and everyoneis learning how to maximize their effective-ness in the system.
The coach is happy with what she’sseen, even if she’s seeing it from afar. She’swatching film, staying in touch with her as-sistant coach and captains, and monitoringthe team’s progress. If it can limit mistakes,Whitney believes she’ll return to a team thatcan repeat the success of last year’s nationaltournament-qualifying squad.
“You’ve got to work through theprocesses and different things that chal-lenge a team,” Whitney said. “I think they’regoing to be great.”

SCORES & SCHEDULE
The Sunlake Seahawks and Land O’Lakes Gators both have talented footballteams. But one is simply better right now.
That team is Sunlake, as evidenced by a34-0 victory over Land O’ Lakes on Sept.18. The game was tight in the first half, with just a 7-0 edge for Sunlake at halftime. But the game got away from the Gators, who fell to 2-2 and 0-1 in 6A-6 district play.
The home victory upped Sunlake’srecord to 4-0, and gave the team its firstwin in district play.
Both teams have plenty of districtgames left to determine who moves on tothe playoffs. Sunlake begins a three-gamestretch of district play on Oct. 2, whileLand O’ Lakes has three district games ina row starting Oct. 16.

Gary Lasasso, left, a museum employee, tells Terry Plog, a visitor from Arkansas, about thefeatures of this 1922 Milburn Electric car.
As visitors approach The Tampa Bay Auto Museum, they may wonder what awaits theminside. Once they walk in, they’ll find a collection of vehicles that, beyond being visuallyappealing, also help tell the story of automobile design.
It’s not located on a busy thor-oughfare, but people who enjoyexotic cars, or who have a pen-chant for innovation, will findmuch to enjoy at the Tampa BayAutomobile Museum.
This is a place where history comes tolife through vehicles.
The museum houses the private collec-tion of Alain Cerf, owner of Polypack, abusiness located next door.
Polypack, which began outside of Paris, isa manufacturer of automatic packaging ma-chinery.
Cerf opened the museum on March 19,2005, to share his unique collection withthe general public.
“The founder of the business was bornand raised in France and actually began thebusiness in France, had a factory just outsideof Paris,” said John Perodeau, a museum em-ployee.
“They started doing work in the UnitedStates and in the mid-1970s, he moved hisbusiness and his family from Paris, France, toPinellas Park, Florida.
“When they moved, they brought notonly the business and the family, but theybrought what were then the family cars.
“The first three cars in here, and then acouple of more that are in the back, are thecars that came with them across theAtlantic.
“The rest of the cars in the collectionhave been selected because they displaysome sort of innovative engineering or tech-nology, something that was new, differentand pioneering for its time,” Perodeau said.
“We’re not a typical classic car museum. We don’t have Duesenbergs and Packardsand Pierce-Arrows. They’re very nice cars, but their engineering was conventional, andwe focus on the unconventional.
“We focus on engineering innovations inautomobiles,” Perodeau added.
Something else that’s unusual? The cars in this museum sometimes can
be seen tooling down the road.“They all have Florida license plates.
They’re registered and insured. They mayget taken home at the end of the day afterwork. They go out on weekends. They go toparades and car shows. They don’t just sithere in the museum,” Perodeau said.
The collection has a total of 63 cars.Visitors are free to get close to them and
take as many photos as they want. They are asked not to touch the cars, but
if they’d like to look under the hood or in-side the car, they can ask the museum staffto give them that closer look.
Staff members are knowledgeable aboutthe history of automobiles and new devel-opments.
Perodeau and Gary Lasasso, another mu-seum staffer, welcome queries.
“If you have a question on any of thecars, one of us will get you an answer,”Perodeau said.
During a recent visit, Lasasso pointed outinnovations of various vehicles, talked aboutthe people who designed and manufacturedthem, and offered historical context, too.
The 12,000-square-foot gallery space in-cludes examples of some of the finest earlyapproaches to aerodynamic shapes andpackaging, front wheel drive, unibody con-struction, and pioneering uses of materialssuch as cast aluminum and pressed steel.
The innovation of engineers such as PaulJaray (the designer of the Zeppelin airships),Gabriel Voisin (aircraft from World War I andbeyond), Edmund Rumpler (aircraft fromWorld War I and beyond) and Jean AlbertGregoire (Tracta front wheel drive) are pres-ent in automobiles throughout thecollection.
There are also examples that celebratethe work of Dr. Ferdinand Porsche, HansLedwinka and others.
Lasasso is a huge fan of Gregoire. In fact, he admires Gregoire’s innovations
Designed by the young Jacques Gerin, the 1925 Gerin Aerodyne is a prototype mid-engined saloon car which marked a significant departurefrom other vehicles of its day.
