The Lazy Generation

The Lazy Generation• Most of these accusations are from old generations, like the

Baby Boomer Generation• Their argument is that Generation Y is the most lazy

generation– Not motivated– No initiative

• There are many articles online and many personal accounts• This is been going on since the conception of the internet

became a world wide phenomenon• They think this because of how much extra time we have on

our hands and what we do with it

The Lazy Generation (cont.)• “She told me that her generation went to look for a job, actually

did the job correctly, worked hard, and earned far less than we could imagine.”

• “Other than that, she said that they were more lively and actually did things.”

• “Whereas we, allegedly, sit in front of a computer, text all day, or are too tired because we worked too much...”

• These are actual quotes from an interview of a women from the Baby Boomer Generation– These quotes show that many of the older people in our society do in

“Addiction” to the Internet• Non-Digital Native adults

misinterpret the difference between addiction and usefulness

• They do not understand the importance that the internet and computers has over our generation– Social Connection– Information Gathering

• Fast and efficient

– School work – Connectivity

Books? What are books?

• Most of my Generation doesn’t read books for pleasure

• We get most all of our information on the internet and learn from there

• Some even find books to be a waste of paper and resources- Would rather have everything on the internet

• Wastes less paper• More easily accessible• No books lying around the house not being used

Newspapers Dying

• Newspapers aredying out- Information is more readily Available on the internet- Less waste of trees to make the paper

• Tablets are replacing the traditional newspaper

Conclusion

• After all of my research I have come to the conclusion that this “lazy” myth is just that, a myth.

• We are not lazy, we have tools that make our lives easier.– Which is observed by the older generations as lazy

• Instead of going to a library to research something, we go on our computers and look it up.

• Instead of making a phone call to ask one question, we just send a text.

• Instead of getting a newspaper and sifting through it to find an article that might interest us, we use our computers to find articles that we are interested in reading.

Conclusion (cont.)

• I believe that many of the older generations don’t understand how much time we have because of how fast we can access information, and it is perceived as us being lazy and not doing anything productive.– But in actuality, we have done everything they use

to do, in a quarter of the time.
