Shanghai University of Technology was once Shanghai Institute of Technology founded in 1960, and in 1972 the institute merged with Shanghai Institute of Mechanism with its headquarters on Shanghai Institute of Technology campus. The twowere separatedin 1979 and was renamed Shanghai Industrial University and Shanghai Institute of Mechanism, respectivelywith the admission of Chinese Ministry of Education .

Shanghai University of Science & Technology was formed by East China Branch of Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1958. The president of the university was the chief of the East China Branch, and all the deans in related subjects were also the heads of the institutes of Chinese Academy of Sciences in Shanghai, so the university had a very close relationship with all the academies and institutes.

The former Shanghai University was founded in 1983, including School of Liberal Arts, School of International Business, School of Fine Arts, School of Engineering and School of Law. These schools respectively came from branch of Fudan University, branch of merged Shanghai Foreign Studies University and Shanghai Mechanics College, Shanghai Fine Arts College, part branch of merged East China Normal University and Shanghai Science & Technology University, Shanghai College of Law. Shanghai Science & Technology College was once Shanghai No. 2 Science & Technology School established in 1959, and the school became a college in 1981.

In the 1920s, there was a Shanghai University in Shanghai. Founded in 1922, it was the outcome of the cooperation between the Communist Party and the Kuomintang(KMT). Yu Youren, a member of KMT,served as the president of the university, Yun Daiying was in charge of general affairs, Qu Qiubai was theChair of Sociology Department, and many other CPC leaders and famous scholars worked there. However, Jiangjieshi and other KMT right-wing members forced the university to close after their counterrevolutionary coup. With a cautious study style and strong revolutionary atmosphere but a rather short history, the university contributed a group of useful people to the cause of Chinese liberation and development, including Li Shuoxun, father of Lipeng and a revolutionary martyr as well, and former Chinese President Yang Shangkun, etc.

At that time, people could say it proudly that Shanghai University was the top school in liberal arts, while Huangpu (a distinguished military school in China) in military training.

Shanghai University has a highly qualified and experienced team of faculty.Shanghai University, one of the key universities of "Project 211" in China, is a comprehensive university with disciplines of natural science, engineering, humanities, law, economics and management, Films and Television, Arts. The University consists of 68 undergraduate programs, 131 master programs, 17 engineering master programs, 1 Global Local MBA program, 35 Ph.D. programs, and 11 post-doctoral programs.

It has 4 national key disciplines, 4 key disciplines and 5 special disciplines of Shanghai Municipality.

In addition, it has 2 national key labs managed by Ministry of Science and Technology and Shanghai Municipal Government3 key research base (1 key research base of sports sociology approved by General Administration of Sport of China and 2 key research bases of humanities and social sciences under Shanghai Municipal government)2 key laboratories (one key laboratory of Ministry of Education of China and 1 key laboratory jointly supported by Ministry of Education of China and Shanghai Municipal Government)1 engineering research center of Ministry of Education of China1 special discipline center of Ministry of Education of ChinaAt present the University has a full-time student body of over 24,000, of whom about 20,000 are undergraduates, 2,000 three-year certificate students, and 2,300 postgraduates. In addition, there are over 20,000 students taking adult education courses in the University. Of the University's over 3,000 faculty members and scientific research staff, 242 are professors and 853 associate professors, among whom 6 are Members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 126 are doctoral tutors and 12 are young and middle-aged national scientific experts with outstanding achievements.

Shanghai Universitys Hi-Tech Park also provides entrepreneurship coaching and supporting services, like Entrepreneurship Mentors, Audit and other entrepreneurial support, to incubate the new businesses to be healthy for crossing from infant stage chiasm. Similarly, STEFG provides supports and resources through Entrepreneurship Salons which will bring new venture entrepreneurs knowledge and social networks.Shanghai University boasts research excellence among top universities in China. Shanghai University has one national university science park, one high-tech development zone, and more than 100 various institutes and research centers. During the past five years, Shanghai University ranks among the top 20 and top 30universities in China with regard to research funding and number of research papers published by faculty and students on SCIEIISTP respectively. Also, the number of applications for and granting of patents is among top 20 in China. Shanghai University has three campuses with an area of more than 2,000,000 square meters in total and the building area of the library is 64,000 square meters. There are many excellent teaching facilities including experimental centers and multi-media classrooms and sports facilities. The three campuses are connected by optical cable.

Under the guidance of the policy of "gearing education to the needs of modernization, the world and the future", Shanghai municipal government invests to build the symbolic educational construction project-the new campus of Shanghai University, which covers an area of 1,000,000 square meters and gross floors area of 600,000 square meters. The University presents a layout of "one body two wings": the new campus serving as the body with freshmen and sophomores of all the schools and College of Science, College of Humanities, College of Foreign Languages, College of Arts, College of Life Science and College of sociology are grouped in the new campus, and Yanchang campus and Jiading campus as two wings.
