Stingy Jack was an old man. He drank a lot and liked to play tricks on otherpeople. One night Jack run into the Devil himself in a public house and he said:
•I’ll give you my soul for my last drink! The Devil turned himself into a sixpence coin. Jack took the coin and put it in his pocket with a silver cross that he was carrying. Thus, the devil could not change himself back. Jack said:
• I’ll let you free if you promise not to claim my soul for ten years! • Ok. I promise, said the devil.
Ten years later , Jack met the devil again on a country road and the devil claimed his soul again. But Jack asked her:
•I’ll go, but before I do, will you get me an apple from that tree? The devil climbed up the apple tree to get an apple, and as soon as he did so, Jack placed crosses all around the trunk of the tree and trapped the devil again. Jack said:
•If you promise not to take my soul when I die, I will free you!The devil agreed.
Several years later, Jack died and he went to the Gates of Heaven but they said:
• Sorry, you can’t enter Heaven because you have been drinking so much time and you have always been a tight-fisted and deceitful person!!!.
Then he went down to Hell to see the Devil who said: •I can’t let you in because of my promise! •But, where can I go then? Asked Jack.•Back to where you came from! Replied the Devil. •But it is very dark and windy! Can you give me a light?
The Devil tossed an ember straight from the fires of Hell. Jack placed the ember inside a hollowed-out turnip to light the road.
When the Irish immigrated to America pumpkins were easier to get. So the tradition changed to carving pumpkins for jack-o-lanterns.
From that day onwards Stingy Jack has doomed to roam the earth without a resting place and with a turnip lit to light the way in the darkness.
