Workshop on ‘Digital Library User Training’ held at UGC UGC/PR/Press Release/2017/ A day-long workshop titled ‘Digital Library User Training’ was held at UGC auditorium on 9th May 2017.

University Grants Commission of Bangladesh (UGC) organized the workshop with the support of Taylor &

Francis Group.

Professor Abdul Mannan, Chairman, UGC graced the function as the Chief Guest. Professor Dr. Md. Akh-tar Hossain, Member, UGC presided over the work-shop. Professor Dr. Mohammad Yousuf Ali Mollah, Member, UGC, Dr. Gauranga Chandra Mohanta, ndc, Project Director (Additional Secretary), HEQEP and Mahmudul Islam, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Education (MoE) were Special Guests. Khandker Hamidur Rahman, Director, IMCT Division, UGC delivered the welcome address at the programme.

The Chief Guest, in his speech said that at present, 3.2 million students are studying in 142 universities in the country. The number of students would ex-ceed 4 million by 2030. About University Digital Library, he said that the government allocated UGC $ 240 million from a grant of the World Bank to im-plement the HEQEP project. University Digital Li-brary is one of its components. The objectives of this project are digitizing country’s higher education and enhance connectivity among the universities. He urged concerned authorities to properly use of the project money.

Professor Mannan said that Digital Library is the best way to overcome time, space and money constraints. He stressed the need for pro-moting and expediting the use of digital resources among the students, teachers and researchers to enhance their knowledge and skills to compete in today’s world.

Professor Mannan said graduates are now searching jobs. But 10-15 years later, job will roam around our graduates if they get necessary education and training. He sought co-operation from all quarters to realize quality higher education.

Professor Akhtar Hossain in his presidential speech highlighted the overall picture of digital library. He said that 72 universities of the country are running digital library with 35,000 contents. A single platform will be formed shortly to make digital library more user friend-ly, he said adding discovery tools and remote access service will start soon.

Professor Yousuf Ali Mollah underscored the need for more use of library with a view to develop human civilization. Referring that con-cept of library has changed, he said government and UGC jointly took Digital Library Project to keep pace with the globalised world. He also called for raising the awareness about the use of digital library among the students, teachers and researchers.

Dr. Gauranga Chandra Mohanta emphasized on capacity building of users to get the advantage of Digital Library.

Librarians from 72 public and private universities and research organisations of the country participated at the workshop. Senior officials from UGC, Ministry of Education, HEQEP and Bangladesh Academy of Science, among others were present on the occasion.

Mr. Kanok Monirul Islam, Convener of OAB, Presided over the workshop and Engineer Shuvra Kar, member secretariat of OAB conduct-

ed the sessions. Dr. Susmita Das, joint Convener of OAB delivered a welcome speech at the beginning of the workshop. After that Kanok

Monirul Islam gave an overview on OA and OAB through a power point presentation.

Dr. Md. Mustafizur Rahman, an advisor of OAB also gave a power point presentation that brought out the history and scopes of OA as

well as many positive and negative sides regarding the publication of a research paper in a journal.

Mr. Joe McArthur, Assistant Director, Right to Research Coalition, Convener of OA UK and Mr. Nick Shockey, Director of SPARC, Organ-

izer of OpenCon, sent their video messages on this occasion which were also showed in this session.

Next Shafina Shegun, head of marketing, Taylor & Francis, gave a presentation on OA from the view of publishers, Trend of research in

Bangladesh, Writing a research paper and How to get published the research paper. Then there was a questionnaire round where Neete

Verma gave answers on behalf of Taylor & Francis.

There was also a quiz round and the winners were rewarded.

In the next session Kazi Habibul Awal, Former Defense Secretary, Ministry of Defence, The people’s Republic of Bangladesh and Chair-

men, Centre for Legal Studies BD, Ltd; Mohammad Kaykobad, Professor, BUET; Tariq Haider, Former District and session Judge and

faculty member, Centre for Legal Studies BD, Ltd; Dr. Anisuzzaman Khan, advisor of OAB, Chief Researcher, Isabela Foundation and

Md. Golam Mustafa, Advisor of OAB, Publisher, Hakkani Publication were present as guest speakers.

In this session, Dr. Anisujjaman Khan said, "Knowledge can never be handcuffed within boundaries. There is no alternative of open ac-

cess in research. Open information and open research will take forward the country & the society as well."

Former secretary Kazi Habibul Awal said, "It is very difficult to buy the research papers from the journals with a high value, for a develop-

ing country like us. I hope, OAB will make the study and research materials open to students-teachers and reseachers to make research

easier." At the end of the program the guests and co-operetive partners were honored with gifts from OAB.

Zakir Hossain, a Bangladesh expatriate named for

the first time ever Diljit Singh Leadership Grant.

The newly developed award was named in 2017 in

honor of Dr. Diljit Singh, past president of the Inter-

national Association of School Librarianship (IASL)

and a veteran professor of the University of Malaya.

This grant allows the recipient to attend their first

IASL annual conference (this year in Long Beach,

California) and assists leaders to share their needs

and aspirations, to learn from other conference

participants, to develop contacts to further their

work and to identify strategies that can be used in

their home country.

Zakir named for the inaugural Diljit Singh Leadership Grant

Zakir, an Independent Researcher who also claimed IASL Takeshi Murofushi Research Award earlier this year for his outstanding research contribution in school librarianship globally. Currently, Zakir is working as a Teacher-Librarian and Extended Essay (4000 words independent research project for IB diploma students) Coordinator at the EUROPEAN International School Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. He is a life member of LAB and IASL/IFLA Joint Committee of School Library Section for the 2017-2021 session. Zakir is keenly interested in working with the Bangladeshi School Librarians. What might peer review look like in 2030’ examines how peer review

can be improved for future generations of academics and offers key rec-

ommendations to the academic community. The report is based on the

lively and progressive sessions at the SpotOn London conference held at

Wellcome Collection Conference centre in November 2016. It includes a

collection of reflections on the history of peer review, current issues

such as sustainability and ethics, while also casting a look into the future

including advances such as preprint servers and AI applications. The

contributions cover perspectives from the researcher, a librarian, pub-

lishers and others.

46th Annual International Conference & 19th International Forum on

Research in School Librarianship
