PREPARING CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS

FOR THE FUTURE Guest Speaker Matthew Harris, Principal of Yarrabah School had an interesting story to tellwhen he addressed our November dinner meeting. Yarrabah special school caters for studentswith disabilities from 3 to 18 years of age.

Matthew began by outlining the history of Yarrabah special school which was established in1973. It was a project of the Methodist Church of Edithvale, and they set up a temporary daytraining centre with the approval of what was then the Health Department.”

Set up under the Mental Health Authority, the name 'Yarrabah' which in the indigenous languagemeans 'meeting place, or house of happiness,' was chosen for the new training centre. “Yarrabah'then went from a day training centre to an actual school, and back in those days the churchcharged $1 a week per student. Excitement and Scandal of theLegends Cup! Cont...

There was a record attendance at this year’s race –estimates put it as high a 23! It is reported that atleast one high-roller flew in from as far afield asMordialloc-Mentone (good to see you Clive).

Catering was again a highlight with a range of pre-lunch nibbles then exotic salads and chicken(expertly sourced by Craig for $2.42 per chicken!)followed by some lovely desserts and lamingtons.

All the punters went home happy (some very happyhaving done quite well for themselves). At the endof the day there was even a surplus of $61.40 whichwill be placed on a horse in the Oaks in theAdministration Account! – Lion John Lissenburg

PREPARING CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDSFOR THE FUTURE Cont.....

Matthew said that from an enrolment of 19 students in the 1990's, 'Yarrabah' schoolnow has over 225 students – “ we seem to be increasing in numbers every year.”

He said that unfortunately the school has been unable to obtain building grants andthe increasing demand for student places is reliant on additional portable relocatableclass rooms.

“We have at 'Yarrabah' over a 100 staff. There is nearly one staff member for everytwo students – we are a big employer of very dedicated people.” 'Yarrabah' has a bigTherapy Team which includes occupational therapists, speech therapists, physiotherapists, a social worker, psychologists, and the teaching staff who workwith all the families and the students.

At the present time the school is lobbying the government to try and get students outof 'portables' and into purpose built facilities.

Lion John Lissenburg (right) thankedMatthew Harris for his informative talk.

“At our school we run a program called Hands-On Learning to help to build and to create things. We also run horticultureprograms, and Certificate 2 programs for students in later years. Next year we will be running a School Formal for the firsttime.”

Matthew said that the school holds a massive concert every second year in the Moorabbin town hall. Every year 'Yarrabah'participates in a music festival where all the Special Schools in the southern area come together. The school also joins BaysideSpecial School in running a sports carnival every year.

“We teach students how to play – play is very important. Without learning how to play, they can't learn how to speak and how tolisten.” Matthew said that most students had a intellectual functionality of three years up to Year 6, but that a lot of them havelearned to function at a “street-wise” level that can be deceptive, and the school has a special role looking after their well being.

We Can Grow Our FoundationJoe Preston Chairperson,

Lions Clubs International FoundationI recently attended the 2015 Special Olympics World Games in LosAngeles, California, USA. I learned the power of giving all athletesthe opportunity to compete and the importance of inclusion.Watching them in action showed me that these athletes reallyblossom when given encouragement and opportunity.

I am so proud of the Lions of California for all of their volunteerefforts for the Healthy Athletes screenings, just like all of the otherLions around the world who have been instrumental in games andscreening events over the last 14 years. I am also very thankful forthe hospitality of our partners at Special Olympics.

Partnerships like this extend the reach of Lions Clubs InternationalFoundation (LCIF), serving more people than any one Lions clubcould serve alone. That is why it is so important that we continue togrow and expand LCIF.

I promoted Ask One for membership last year, but that idea alsoapplies to LCIF. This is OUR foundation. Every one of us isresponsible for its growth and success. We need to make sure everyLion knows about our foundation.I challenge each of you to ask oneLion to make a gift to LCIF this year. We are our own biggestadvocates!

Speak to your fellow Lions about what LCIF means to you and theimpact it makes on millions of lives around the world every year.
