PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Congratulations to this year’s

recipients of our awards. Tom

Polacek is the Lion of the Year.

Although Tom's career as a

Lion is relatively short, he has

certainly become an important

part of our club. He is always

available to help when ther is a

task to be done.

Karen Dixon is our Citizen of

the Year. Karen was president

of the Manitowish Waters

Lakes Association for many

years. With her leadership the

Lakes Association has

developed into a major force in

protecting our great water

resources. Then without taking

a break she took on the

leadership role as president of

the North Lakeland Discovery

Center board. This is the kind of

dedication to service that makes

our town such a great place to

live.

Who better deserves the Bud

Hyland Award then Dan Meier.

The job he has done as Tail

Twister for our club has set the

standard high. His input as a

board member has always been

valued. I'm sure there is no one

in any Lions Club that has

seasoned more pork chops than

Dan. I have created a new

position, Club Seasoner, and

Dan, you have a lifetime

appointment to that position.

Thank you for your service.

At this month’s dinner meeting

we will install officers for the

coming year. We have two key

vacancies; Vice-President, and

Tail Twister. Now is the time

for one of you to step forward.

Neither of these positions or

any club leadership position

take a lot of time, but they are

important if we are to keep a

viable and active club.

The Pancake Breakfast was

once again a successful fund

raiser. We served 215 people

and took in over $2000. This

was the opener for our busy

fund raising season. With the

Flea Market, Bingo, Pork Chop

Dinners, Cash Raffle and Golf

Outing; volunteers are always

needed. Join the fun and support

your Club.

The Improbable Muse

Hey, another Awards Night is in

the record books. It’s time for review and a quick evaluation.

Location: Good, except for additional patrons traipsing

through our proceedings as

they sought seating on the porch.

Food: Excellent, especially the

Dillinger Salad. (Johnny Depp

would have been pleased)

Acoustics: Lousy. Amplification

please, at least to the 60 decibel level. (70% of the population over fifty suffers from some degree of hearing loss and our President’s voice is not geared for oratory.)

District Rep: Boulder Junction came through with a fellow who offered his help no less than five times during his speech. (Tim Casey approached him afterward and signed him up for

several 11:00-2:00 stints during the summer’s Flea Market.)

Program: Recognitions are always

impressive - and emotional - especially when Toby presents

her husband’s Bud Hyland Award. (Congratulations Dan!)

But the one that stood out for me

was the ”Lion of the Year”. While

other honorees were more on the

perimeter of the crowd and the acoustics were daunting, this one blithely rose to his feet and thanked the Lions for giving him the opportunity to get involved and provide service to his community.

But he didn’t stop with that. He continued by confessing that “It has helped to make me a better person.” Humble, with candor and honesty

Would that we were all that open

about the benefits of our special lives, in this special place, in this

special country. If we were, this world would be a much better place in which to live.

So Let’s stand up and put’em

together for all our award recipients, markedly for our “Special Guy of the Year” as well as for the sad Swan Song

of our “Lion Tamer.” Gale Wolf
