Y es, the above photo is real, was taken, I think, by Parks & Rec and is the Beach in Huntington Beach during the U.S. Open of Surfing last week. I call it the Nike Missile event . You just had to be there to feel and see it. This is my 41st year here. I think the Ocean was bigger when I first arrived, but I am not sure. I've been the Chamber guy, the Jaycee Director, helped start the Visitors Bureau in the early years... watched the hotel dream take form, watch Bob Mayer and Steve Bone finalize and realize a 25 year effort. I think we've grown up. We’ve paid our dues. We are, in fact, Surf City USA and perhaps we need to stop trying so hard. A lot of people leave their Arizona desert without water to visit our desert with water. We get a lot of people from the Inland Empire, the South West. The current Visitors Bureau probably has a budget of over $1 million per year to promote us. Here is what I saw. I've traveled to most continents and have spent a lot of time marketing things to a lot of countries. I’ve sold a lot of stuff right here in the US. So, I know what selling is all about. I own a Newspaper and without Ads - there is no news reported. I think it is time for us to totally and finally understand that we are: Surf City USA. The 2010 U.S. Open of Surfing was a giant retail success for Nike. They used this venue to promote 6.0. The demographics for this product line are a 15 year old audience. Therefore, as I saw first hand - hundreds of thousands of very young people consumed our beach, sidewalks parking spaces, streets, Parking Structure, etc. Beauty Salons closed because their customers could not get there, retailers suffered - because there was no parking for retail clients, etc. My survey, as limited as it was - but first hand…the general Downtown merchant said… "It was OK, but down from last year..." I purposely hung out at the Fountain on Main Street several hours per day, Saturday and Sunday. Lots of 15 year old, scarcely covered young girls parading around. No billfolds, carrying no bags. I even went to the U.S. Open on Saturday. Wow, exciting but somewhat suffocating. I saw Police handing out Jay Walking Tickets, underage drinking arrest, the unmistakable aroma of Pot everywhere. To some that is a good thing! I am told that the event paid the City about $160,000, of which about $140,000 went to Police and infra-structure cost. I am told Nike spent about $7 million on the beach to create the incredible Human Ant Hill (HAH 2010). If these venues want to use Surf City USA... let them pay. My numbers take them or leave them. Based on what I was told various vendors paid for booth space, TV, endorsements, etc., if Nike invested $7 million dollars they made at least $20 million. Community leaders: we've paid for the Brand, we own Surf City, USA... if they want to use our City - then we should at least benefit from 5% or more of the Gross they enjoy... it is the American Way - HAH! Why else would we do it? We already own the market... but we do not benefit from it. If the sun shines - the Downtown restaurants will be full, there are only so many seats in each cafe, pub, and restaurant. You can't put any more people then they can sit. I am told the Hotels suffered from no daytime business - the pool areas were empty because event types took the rooms and were gone from the hotels all day - HAH! Had the event not taken the limited hotel room we offer - other business men and women and visitors would have! Show me the money. Better, explain to me (and others) the direct benefit of putting on a break-even event of this magnitude with the enormous risk that goes along with it - if in fact we can't look each other in the eye at the end and say... yeah, they get to go home and we get to keep their money! I think we are now mature enough as a community and destination to target our audiences, pick the tourist family, group and conference and more directly benefit financially rather than use the shotgun and perhaps shot our own goals and dreams in the foot. What do you think? HAH... I am told that the City has decided to conduct an Economic Impact Report on this past event and perhaps other similar ones to ascertain the value. The challenge I place on the table is: there has to be more value than just parking fees and police citation income to the city. The merchants, the community needs to benefit in real, measurable ways. We need to be a better place because of these events. (This is not all original thought. It is the complication of many conversations with insiders like Moe, Steve, Joe, Bob, Marilyn, another half dozen business owners). Often, the summer is the only Special Event the Downtown needs... on the other hand - the winter is a cold dark partner to many local area businesses. A lot of dedicated City employees, and volunteers work hard to make sure we remain safe during theses vents and that they come off safely. I tip my hat to all of them and all those who so professionally work towards building a destination business plan for all of us)....................... When Claudio MartinezRandazzo recently found a HBrestaurant for sale on Craig’s

List, he called and instantly loved itsname, Randazzo. “When I found that out,it was a message that said it was meant tobe,” said the new affable owner of the 23-year-old eatery. Talk about perfect fit: Hismom, Elsa Randazzo, and grandmother,Giuseppa Randazzo were fromRandazzo, Sicily. So he put a new spin onthe name by calling it “La MammaRandazzo Cucina.” It even features hismom and grandma’s recipes. And there’sa nice picture of his grandma inside.

We tried one of Giuseppa’sfavorites, Polpete e Pasta, delicioushomemade meatballs in red sauce withfettuccini (although you could have itwith either angel hair or pappardelle, too.)We also loved her special Lentil Soup, made up of lentils, diced potatoes, ItalianSausage, diced pork and meat chunks inbroth. Yummy! And the Baby GreenSalad was very tasty. Claudio’s mom’srecipes include Risotto Salcicces (Italiansausage in an Italian wine red sauce withArborio rice risotto) and Milanessa

(lightly breaded veal fried in canolaoil, served with your choice of pasta, fries or baby greens).

In addition to dinner dishes, theyalso served some great lunch choices, such as Linguini Cavallino, GnocchiDella Sera and Pollo Conlimone, just toname a few. Randazzo featuressandwiches, like Argentinean Famous“Lomito” (thinly sliced, tenderized FiletMignon topped with ham, egg, tomato, lettuce, melted cheese and mayonnaise onan artisan toasted bun) and HomemadeTri Tip (tender slices with baby greens, tomatoes and mayonnaise on a toastedbaguette, served with auju sauce orhomemade chimichurri).

You also can order a variety ofpizzas (i.e., Margarita, Pollo Rustica andVeggie Amore), Empanadas (Argentineanturnovers filled with a homemade recipe),Espresso and there’s even a Children’sMenu with pasta and meatball, smallpizza or homemade macaroni and cheese. The friendly atmosphere makes it a funplace to dine in but you also can take itout or have it delivered (free within a 5mile radius and a $15 minimum.)

We highly recommend a visit to LaMamma Randazzo Cucina. Be sure andtry their great “Chow.” “Ciao” for now!

Author WilliamP o v l e t i c hdebuted his

fascinating new book,"Some Like It Cold," ata special Book Signingon July 31st at TheHuntington BeachInternational SurfingMuseum.

The book isabout a WisconsinSurfin Sufari. Thestirring and occasionally chilling truestory about the two brothers who helpedtransform Sheboygan, WI, into one ofthe best freshwater surfing sports in theworld. For the previous six decades, twin brothers Lee and Larry Williamshave been surfing the Gnarliest Wavesdespite living nearly 2,000 miles fromany ocean.

Overcoming the obstacle of beingborn in the middle of the country, theymade their massive pipe dreams happenon the shores of Lake Michigan. "SomeLike It Cold," A Sheboygan SurfinSurfari, chronicles the lives of these twobrothers and the unique culture theyhelped build. They turned Sheboyganinto "the Malibu of the Midwest." Ashosts of the Dairyland Surf Classic, theybecame internationally famous for theirhuge beach party.

"This booksuperbly highlightsthe goodtime years ofsurfing on the GreatLakes," said famedSurf PhotographerJohn Lyman of HB."Brothers Williamsare true surfers, who

will suffer throughcold water andweather to feel thefeeling only a surfer

knows. This is a great read for anyoneinterested in the lesser-known history ofsurfing."

The 188-page paperback book, published from Clerisy Press, has blackand white pictures throughout. It'savailable at The Huntington BeachInternational Surfing Museum - 411Olive Avenue near 5th Street for $14.95.

The author has also written"Milwaukee Braves: Heroes andHeartbrake" and "Green Bay Packers:Legends in Green and Gold." He's alsoan Emmy-nominated, Peabody Award-winning documentary filmmaker and aheck of a nice Guy to boot. I wish himwell. Go buy his new book and enjoy agreat read!

Iwould never trade my amazing friends, mywonderful life, my loving family for less grayhair or a flatter belly. As I’ve aged, I've become

somewhat kinder and less critical of myself. I'vebecome my own friend. I don't chide myself foreating that extra cookie, or for not making my bed,or for buying that silly cement gecko that I didn'tneed, but looks so avante garde on my patio. I amentitled to a treat, to be messy, to be as extravagantas I can afford to be.

I have seen too many dear friends leave this worldtoo soon; before they understood the great freedomthat comes with aging.

Whose business is it if I choose to read or play on thecomputer until 4 AM and sleep until noon? I will dancewith myself to those wonderful tunes of the 60 & 70's, andif I, at the same time, wish to weep over a lost love... I will.

I will walk the beach in clothes that stretches over abulging body, and will dive into the waves withabandonment if I choose to, despite the pitying glancesfrom the jet set. They, too, will get old.

I know I am sometimes forgetful. But there again, some of life is just as well forgotten. And I eventuallyremember the important things.

Sure, over the years my heart has been broken. Howcan your heart not break when you lose a loved one,or when a child suffers, or even when somebody'sbeloved pet gets passes away? But broken hearts arewhat give us strength and understanding andcompassion. A heart never broken is pristine andsterile and will never know the joy of being imperfect.

I am so blessed to have lived long enough tohave my hair turning gray, and to have my youthfullaughs be forever etched into deepening grooveson my face.

So many have never laughed, and so many havedied before their hair could turn silver.

As you get older, it is easier to be positive. Youcare less about what other people think... I don'tquestion myself anymore. I've even earned the rightto be wrong and be able to admit it.

So, to answer your question, I like being old. Ithas set me free. I like the person I have become. I amnot going to live forever, but while I am still here, Iwill not waste time lamenting what could have been,or worrying about what will be. And I shall eat

dessert every single day (if I feel like it).

An elderly Italian man lay dying inhis bed. While suffering theagonies of impending death, he

suddenly smelled the aroma of hisfavorite tomato sauce and ravioli comingup the stairs.

He gathered his remaining strength, and lifted himself from the bed. Grippingthe railing with both hands, he draggedhimself downstairs.

When he reachedthe bottom of the stairsand gazed into thekitchen, where if notfor death's agony, hewould've thought hewas in heaven already, for there, spread outupon the kitchen tablewere hundreds of hisfavorite ravioli.

Was it heaven? Orwas it one final act oflove from his wife of 67years, seeing to it thathe left this world ahappy man?

He threw himself

towards the table, landing on his knees. The wondrous taste of the ravioli alreadyon his lips as he reached out to touch oneof his beloved foods.

Suddenly he was smacked with awooden spoon by his wife who said:

" BA - Fanapala NO TOUCH ! ! !DIS' is FOR YOU FUNERAL ! ! ! "

United States. That's right, every othermodern Developed nation in the world

has gotten rid of birthrightcitizenship policies.

Yet, most of U.S. newsmedia and politicians the lasttwo weeks have ridiculed thecomments by some otherpoliticians that it is time for the

U.S. to put an end to birthrightcitizenship for tourists and illegal

By RON LIEBER

There’s a class war coming to the world ofgovernment pensions. The haves are retireeswho were once state or municipal workers.

Their seemingly guaranteed and ever-escalatingmonthly pension benefits are breaking budgetsnationwide.

The have-nots are taxpayers who don’t havegenerous pensions. Their 401(k)s or individualretirement accounts have taken a real beating inrecent years and are notguaranteed. And soon, manyof those people will be payinghigher taxes or getting fewerstate services as their statesput more moneyaside to coverthose pensionchecks.

At stake is atleast $1 trillion. That’s trillion, with a“t,” as in titanic andterrifying.

The figure comes from astudy by the Pew Center on theStates that came out inFebruary. Pew estimated a $1trillion gap as of fiscal 2008between what states had promised workers in the wayof retiree pension, health care and other benefits andthe money they currently had to pay for it all. Andsome economists say that Pew is too conservativeand the problem is two or three times as large.

So a question of extraordinary financial, political, legal and moral complexity emerges, something that every one of us will be taking intotown meetings and voting booths for years to come:Given how wrong past pension projections were, who should pay to fill the 13-figure financing gap?

Consider what’s going on in Colorado — andwhat is likely to unfold in other states andmunicipalities around the country.

Earlier this year, in an act of rare politicalcourage, a bipartisan coalition of state legislatorspassed a pension overhaul bill. Among other things, the bill reduced the raise that people who are alreadyretired get in their pension checks each year. couldcost him half a million dollars if he lives another 30years. He also notes that just about all state workersin Colorado do not (and cannot) pay into SocialSecurity, so the pension is all retirees have to live onunless they have other savings.

No one disputes these figures. Instead, theyapologize. “All I can say is that I am sorry,” saidBrandon Shaffer, a Democrat, the president of theColorado State Senate, who helped lead thebipartisan coalition that pushed through the changes.(He also had to break the news to his mom, a retiredteacher.) “I am tremendously sympathetic. But as a

steward of the publictrust, this is what we hadto do to preserve theretirement fund.”

Taxpayers, whose payments are also helping torestock Colorado’s pension fund, may not be assympathetic, though. The average retiree in the fundstopped working at the sprightly age of 58 anddeposits a check for $2,883 each month. Many ofthem also got a 3.5 percent annual raise, no matterwhat inflation was, until the rules changed this year.

Private sector retirees who want theirown monthly $2,883 check for life,

complete with inflationadjustments, wouldneed an immediatefixed annuity if theydon’t have a pension.

A 58-year-old maleshopping for one from anA-rated insurancecompany would have tohand over a minimum of

$860,000, according toCraig Hemke of

Buyapension.com. A womanwould need at least $928,000,because of her longer life

expectancy. Who among aspiringretirees has a nest egg that size, let alone people withthe same moderate earning history as many stateemployees? And who wants to pay to top offsomeone else’s pile of money via increased incometaxes or a radical decline in state services?

If you find the argument of Colorado’s retireeswanting, let your local legislator know that you don’twant to be responsible for every last dollar necessaryto cover pension guarantees gone horribly awry. Afterall, many government employee unions will be takingcontrary positions and doing so rather loudly.

If you work for a state or local government, startsaving money outside of the pension plan if youhaven’t already, because that plan may not last for aslong as you need it.

And if you’re a government retiree or gettingclose to the end of your career? Consider what itmeans to be a citizen in a community. And what itmeans to be civil instead of litigious, coming to thetable and making a compromise before politiciansshove it down your throat and you feel compelled tochallenge them to a courthouse brawl.

“We have to do what unions call givebacks,”said Mr. Lamm, the former Colorado governor.“That’s the only way to sanity. Any other alternative, therein lies dragons.”

Since the real estate collapse we’ve seen FannieMae and Freddie Mac dramatically increase thequalifications for a home loan. The tightening at

the credit window has been even more severe with allthe emphasis on financial reform in Washington overthe last couple months. The effect has been downrightdebilitating for certainhomeowners. Across thecountry there arethousands ofhomeowners who havehistorically never had theslightest difficultyobtaining a loan. Now, allof a sudden, they findthat banks are no longerwilling to lend to them.

Is it entirely thebanks fault? The banksare willing to make loansas long as Fannie orFreddie are willing toback it. On TV, thepoliticians are blamingthe banks for the creditcrunch, claiming that thebanks don’t want to lend. In reality, the politicians arethe ones who have been ratcheting down on Fannie andFreddie’s requirements. The banks are just followingthe newer, stricter guidelines.

There is some good news in all this. AlthoughFannie and Freddie have made it increasingly difficultfor new customers to get a loan, they still have millionsof home loans on their books that are at high rates andat a high risk of default. Fannie and Freddieexperimented in relaxed criteria for existing customerslast year with the HARP (Home Affordable RefinanceProgram). The idea was that existing customers wereless likely to default on their loans if they had a lowerrate and / or monthly payment. As simple a concept asthis might seem, it was actually considered a high-riskprogram to relax the credit criteria for these

homeowners. In some cases Fannie and Freddie wouldlend up to 125% of the house’s current appraised value. This program, funded by the TARP bailout (TroubledAsset Relief Program) also relaxed the incomerequirements and made loans available to homeownerswith much higher debt ratios than otherwise available.

Are statedincome loansthe next step int h egovernment’sbailout forhomeowners?According to ar e c e n tannouncement,yes! Fannie andFreddie haveopened the doorfor existingloans to berefinanced atlower rateswithout theneed fors u p p o r t i n g

income documentation. It’s funny how the samepoliticians who referred to these as “liar loans” just afew months ago now realize that even stated incomeloans have their place in mortgage lending. There are amultitude of homeowners who receive income thatcannot be documented according to Fannie andFreddie’s strict requirements. Self-employedindividuals represent the largest segment of thispopulation but there are many others. I recentlyworked with a client who’s ex-husband paid childsupport every month like clockwork. However, theirrelationship was so amicable that the court was notinvolved and an actual Child Support Court Ordercould not be produced to meet the strict underwritingguidelines. For individuals like these, a stated incomeloan makes sense. Helping them lower their rate and

therefore lower their paymentswill help more homeowners. It willalso help decrease the amount offoreclosure losses Fannie and Freddiewill take on their books whileunder the government’s care.

Although Fannie andFreddie have bothannounced they arewilling to partake instated income loans forselect current clients, thedecision falls on the servicing bank whether or not tomake it available to the homeowners. Score one for thepoliticians. They devised a program that would actuallyhelp hundreds of thousands of homeowners, yet themajority of banks are not making this program availableto American homeowners.

Still, this should come as a sign of hope.Homeowners who have not been able to take advantageof today’s historic low rates because of an inability tomeet income documentation requirements should calltheir lender or mortgage broker to see if they qualify forthis government assistance. When a 5 minute call couldpotentially save thousands of dollars a year in interest itcertainly justifies a minimal investment of time. Andalthough the number of participating banks is anemic atpresent, more banks will surely jump on board as thecampaign proves successful. This is definitelysomething to keep an eye on.

The board is responsible for goingover color schemes, design details andarchitecture aesthetics to ensure the projectwould complement the surroundingcommunity and adheres to city standards.

The board's review of the plans is thefirst step toward approvals for the project, which would need to be considered by the

The commission will have to approve azoning amendment, a general planamendment and the site plan. The councilwill have to also approve the zoning andgeneral plan amendments but would onlyhave to consider approval of a site plan ifthe project is appealed, city officials said.

De a rEarthTalk: What

are some simple things Icould do to green the office I

work in?- James Raskin, Framingham, MANo matter how green your office may be

already, there is surely room for improvementsomewhere. Here are 10 suggestions to help get youand your co-workers further along on the path tooffice sustainability:

(1) Take your Office’s Green Footprint: Thewebsite TheGreenOffice.com, an online retailerspecializing in green office products, makesavailable a free Office Footprint Calculator to gaugewhat kind of effect you and your co-workers arehaving on the environment and identify how tomake improvements.

(2) Save Trees: The average office worker uses10,000 sheets of copy paper a year. Refrain fromprinting when you can, use both sides of a sheet, and recycle so that the recycling industry will haveraw material.

(3) Power Down: Artificial lighting accountsfor almost half of all office electricity use. Turn offlights that are not being used. Better yet, installmotion sensors that do it automatically when no oneis in the room. Also, shut down computersovernight, and set them to go into sleep mode whensitting idle.

(4) Minimize E-Waste: Upgrade or repair theoffice computers instead of junking them. So-called“e-waste”—toxin-leaching computers andelectronics—is a huge problem all over the world now.

(5) Telecommute: Encourage workers to work athome when possible to save car trips. For those who

must come to the office, encourage bicycling if it issafe. Also some firms now subsidize employee publictransit costs to discourage driving. And online videotools like Skype can help cut down on business trips.

(6) Green Screen Your Suppliers: Ask yourvendors how they are greening their operations. Justposing the question can start them thinking, the

precursor to action. Demand recycled paper and soy-based inks from your printers, and buy only greenoffice supplies—which are now widely available.

(7) Clean Greener: Make sure your cleaningservice uses non-toxic, green friendly products—ifthey don’t, offer to supply them—so that you canbreathe easy when you’re trying to get your own workdone.

(8) Eco-Renovate: If you need to renovate orupgrade anything, greenest options abound, includingnon-toxic paints, natural fiber carpeting, energy efficientwindows and Energy Star-rated office equipment.

(9) Drink Tap Water: Having big jugs of waterlugged in and out every week by the bottle watercompany is not only unnecessary but a big waste ofenergy. Most tap water is safe to drink; if yours isn’tor you’re not sure, put filters on the kitchen spouts orbuy filtered water pitchers and keep them in theoffice fridge.

(10) Put Your Heads Together: Form acommittee to organize and monitor your office’s greenpractices, to ensure that your office’s green goalsdon’t fall away if one or two committed employeesmove on, and to reinforce the importance of doing theright thing across the organization.CONTACTS: TheGreen Office.com, www.thegreenoffice.com.

Kimberly Dozier reports about a "powerful" woman, onethat has for information than most... Ms. Dozier says..." -- The United States has had three female secretaries of

state - but until now has never had a woman lead one of its 16major intelligence agencies.

Letitia A. Long is being elevated Monday to director of theNational Geospatial-Intelligence Agency in a ceremony at theagency's half-built, high-tech campus in Springfield, Va.

The "Jetsons"-style rounded wedge of buildings is risingfrom a vast construction site near Fort Belvoir. The NGA's staff, now spread across the Washington metropolitan area, is slated torelocate there by fall 2011.

Letitia "Tish" Long will head the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency.

Long's 32-year career has led to a series of senior managementpositions: deputy director of Naval Intelligence, deputyundersecretary of defense for intelligence and, most recently, secondin command at the Defense Intelligence Agency. Long represents thevanguard of women in the intelligence community.

Women represent 38 percent of total intelligence work force, according to Wendy Morigi, spokeswoman for the Director ofNational Intelligence. In six most prominent agencies, 27 percentof senior intelligence positions are held by women.

Long has taken over one of the "top computer geek shops"in the national security world. The NGA synthesizes satelliteimagery, using everything from the number of electric lines a cityhas to the density of the soil, to create three-dimensional,interactive maps of every spot on the planet. They're used byeveryone from invading troops gauging whether a country's roadsor deserts can handle tank tracks, to oil spill cleanup crews tryingto decide where to deploy resources.

Long has the science-and-technology credentials to do it,with a degree in electrical engineering from Virginia Tech, and amasters in mechanical engineering from the Catholic Universityof America.

Rep. Anna Eshoo, D-Calif., said Long's "experience andposition make her an important role model for all the women inthe intelligence community." Eshoo is a member of the Houseintelligence committee and a longtime proponent of women in topintelligence roles.

Some of Long's new women staffers at the NGA say herexample will surely change how the largely male-dominated work

force sees them. However, womenin their thirties and forties at theseagencies say the climb they face issmall compared to Long's fight, against an older generation thathadn't yet witnessed women incombat or a woman come so closeto capturing the nomination forU.S. president.

Yet some of those women outin the national security trenches say the fight's far from over.

Intelligence executive Carrie Bachner, a former Air Forceofficer, worked as the legislative adviser to Charles Allen when hewas the Department of Homeland Security's top intelligence official.

That meant she advised him daily on how to deal with the 86congressional committees responsible for DHS oversight.

Still Bachner says, when she'd walk into a room ofintelligence officials or congressional staff with Allen, "they'dautomatically ignore me, assuming I was the executive assistantor a note taker until they'd realize, 'Oh, wow, she's the personwe're supposed to talk to.'"

Bachner is also Indonesian, which she believes is anotherreason she is often overlooked.

"I still get it, even though I'm the president of mycompany," she says. Her firm, Mission Concepts Inc.,specializes ininformation sharingand serves thePentagon and mostof the intelligenceagencies. "They aretaken aback when Iintroduce myself. They're looking forthe real president, and well, that'sme."

And now, when "they" lookfor the director ofthe NGA, that willbe Letitia Long."

The City Council on Mondayapproved a cost recovery programin which nonresidents would be billed for emergency responseservices for car accidents, car fires and pipeline and power line

damage.Fees vary based on the

service, but could cost as much as$2,000 for someone who needs tobe extracted from a vehicle.

Fire Chief Patrick McIntoshsays residents would be exemptfrom the accident fee because theypay taxes that go toward the city'semergency response services.

City officials expect theordinance would bring in about$100,000 in revenue each year.

McIntosh says Fullerton,Garden Grove, Costa Mesa and Santa Ana have implementedsimilar programs.

return to the New York Knicks’ management teamis over before it even began. And none of theprinciples in the proposed move have evenacknowledged its folly or the sheer chutzpah of it.

Thomas, currently the head basketball coachat F.I.U., formerly known as Florida InternationalUniversity, had agreed to a formal consultingarrangement with the team he ran into the groundwhile serving in various capacities, includingpresident and coach, between 2003-07. Thomaswas terminated by the Knicks after a jury decidedhe had sexually harassed a female employee whowas later fired for reporting him to his boss,Madison Square Garden president James Dolan.Just for good measure, the jury tacked on a multi-million dollar judgment against the team.

Dolan, whose only qualification for hisposition is his father’s major equity stake in MSG,and Thomas have a mutual admiration society thatis unexplainable, except to say that they are twopeas in the same pod – rich, spoiled, arrogant andincompetent.

Surprisingly, the NCAA, best known for “NotCaring About Athletes,” has no rules against acollege coach also working for a professional teamand blessed the consulting agreement before it wasannounced. Never mind that such an arrangementis, at the very least, a conflict of interest. Should the

coach advise his players to sign with his pro team orstay in school? The dual role may also give the

coach a recruiting advantage. Yet the very sameNCAA has rules against a coach sendingcondolences to the family of a recruit killed in anauto accident.

Although the NCAA found no rules violationwith the Knicks-Thomas arrangement, the NBA did.

Under league bylaws, a coach can’t be employed byan NCAA institution at the same time he is drawing

a paycheck from one of its teams. Rather thanformerly void the agreement between theKnicks and Thomas, NBA commissioner DavidStern discussed the issue privately with bothparties and gave them the opportunity to rescindthe arrangement. After the parties agreed to doso, Stern issued a written statement saying,“…it is not necessary for the league to take anyformal action on the proposed arrangement.”How convenient.

It’s inevitable that Thomas will end upback in the NBA someday, probably with theKnicks although some other team, operatingwith blinders, may see the same thing inThomas that Dolan does. The only question isthe timing. And when the inevitable happens,Thomas won’t continue to receive a paycheckfrom an NCAA institution, not because theNCAA prohibits it, but because the NBA bylawswon’t permit it. Funny how the so-called“amateurs” can tolerate an unethicalarrangement that the pros find unacceptable.

SOUTHERN SHORSURAK, HELMANDPROVINCE, Islamic Republic ofAfghanistan — Cpl. Matt Garst should be

dead.Few people survive stepping on an

improvised explosive device. Even fewer walkaway the same day after directly absorbing theforce of the blast, but Garst did just that.

A squad leader with 3rd Battalion, 3rdMarine Regiment, Garst was leading his squadon a patrol in Southern Shorsurak, Afghanistan,June 23 to establish a vehicle checkpoint insupport of Operation New Dawn.

The men were four miles from CompanyL's newly established observation post whenthey approached an abandoned compound closeto where they needed to set up their checkpoint. It would serve well as an operating base — aplace for the squad to set up communications androtate Marines in and out of. But first, it had tobe secured.

As they swept the area with a metaldetector, the IED registered no warning on thedevice. The bomb was buried too deep and itsmetallic signature too weak. Two men walkedover it without it detonating.

At six feet, two inches tall and 260 poundswith all his gear on, Garst is easily the largestman in his squad by 30 or 40 pounds — justenough extra weight to trigger the IED burieddeep in hard-packed soil.

Lance Cpl. Edgar Jones, a combat engineerwith the squad, found a pressure plate inside thecompound and hollered to Garst, asking what heshould do with it. Garst turned around to answerthe Marine and stepped on the bomb.

“I can just barely remember the boom,”Garst said. “I remember the start of a loud noiseand then I blacked out.”

Since Garst's improbable run-in with theIED, his tale has spread through the rest of thebattalion, and as often happens in combat units, the story mutates, the tale becoming more andmore extraordinary about what happened next:He held onto his rifle the whole time … Heactually landed on his feet … He remainedunmoved, absorbing the impact like he wasmuffling a fart in a crowded elevator …

What really happened even eludes Garst. All went black after the earth uppercut him. When he came to, he was standing on his feetholding his weapon, turning to see theremnants of the blast and wondering why hissquad had a look on their faces as if they’d

seen a ghost.Marines in Company L think Garst is the

luckiest guy in the battalion, and while that mayseem a fair assessment, it was the enemy’sshoddy work that left Garst standing. The three-liters of homemade explosive only partiallydetonated.

Marines who witnessed the event frominside the compound caught glimpses of Garst’sfeet flailing through the air just above the otherside of the building’s eight-foot walls. Theexplosion knocked him at least fifteen feet awaywhere he landed on his limp head and shouldersbefore immediately standing back up.

Not quite sure of what had just happened,Garst turned back toward the blast, now nothingbut a column of dirt and smoke rising toward thesun.

“My first thought was, ‘Oh s---, I just hit anIED,’” he said. “Then I thought, ‘Well I’mstanding. That’s good.’”

Garst’s squad stared at him in disbelief. Thesquare-jawed Marine has a tendency to be short-tempered, and the realization that the blast wasmeant to kill him spiked his adrenaline andanger.

“It pissed me off,” he said.He directed his men to establish a security

perimeter while letting them know in his ownway that he was OK.

“What the f--- are you looking at?” he said.“Get on the cordon!”

Garst quickly radioed back to base, callingan explosive ordnance disposal team and quickreaction force.

“I called them and said, ‘hey, I just gotblown up. Get ready,’” he said. “The guy thoughtI was joking at first. ‘You got blown up? You’renot calling me. Get out of here.’”

Once EOD cleared the area, Garst led hissquad the four miles back to their observationpost — just hours after being ragdolled by anIED blast.

“I wasn’t going to let anybody else take mysquad back after they’d been there for me,” hesaid. “That’s my job.”

The next day Garst awoke with a poundingheadache and was as sore as he’d ever been inhis life.

“Just getting up from trying to sleep waspainful,” he said.

But he saw no reason being sore shouldslow him down. He popped some ibuprofen andafter a day of rest, Garst was back out on patrol, showing his Marines and the enemy that just likehis resolve — Cpl Matt Garst is unbreakable.

JetBlue knows what it'slooking for in flightattendants, and is finding a

certain type best fits the mold:New York cops and fire fighters.

The New York-based carrierhas hired several hundred retiredcity police officers andfirefighters since its launch adecade ago, reports The WallStreet Journal.

JetBlue decided hiringattendants with experiencedealing with the public, whowould focus on safety and couldhandle people in stressfulsituations was a good thing. Awillingness to work weekendsand holidays and to take charge of

an aircraft cabin were also desiredqualities, writes columnist ScottMcCartney.

The first group of JetBlueflight attendants in 1995 includeda recently retired firefighter,Leonard Spivey, "who became arole model for the airline and isstill flying today at age 70,"McCartney writes. In addition toall the desired safety attributes hebrought "corny jokes" and an"upbeat nature."

Spivey has helped findothers with emergency responseexperience to work as flightattendants -- NYPD and FDNYveterans can typically retire after20 years of service, so are ripe forrecruitment.
