POE

An Evening With

W R I T T E N B Y S T E V E N O R R I S

WelcomeWelcome to the Manhattan Beach Community Church Theater! We are so pleased you have joined us for this fall’s production of “An Evening With Poe.” If this is your first time with us or your thirtieth, we hope you will have a wonderful experience. Historically, the Theater ministry here at MBCC has been a way for members of our congregation, along with individuals from the surrounding community to come together for fun and fellowship, and to share their talents on the stage. We believe that there is no better way to live out God’s call to relationship with others than to come together around a shared passion, and that is what happens

in our theater ministry. We witness this wonderful fellowship among the cast and crew, and then we, the audience, receive a gift as we are invited into that fellowship during the performance. Ministry is a gift, both when we receive it and when we offer it. The ministry of the MBCC Theater continues to be just such a gift for and from all who grace us with their presence. Thank you for being here, and enjoy the show! Shalom…Rev. Mark Pettis

AN EVENING WITH POE is an exploration into not only the works of the literary giant Edgar Allan Poe, but also an examination of his life. This piece is written by Steve Norris, no stranger to MBCC- having directed last falls DRACULA and LOVERS AND OTHER STRANGERS in the summer - and shares the tender and touching tale of life for a ‘newspaper man’ in the 19th century. While the legend of Poe has taken firm root in the folklore of American artists, the true story told here paints a very different portrait of the man. In the spirit of creating more opportunities for people to enjoy explore the theater arts in the South Bay, each of the vignettes feature a different director offering their interpretations of the most legendary of Poe’s writing.

This production carries on over 60 years of theater at MBCC. We are proud to have produced everything from classic dramas to full orchestra musicals, comedic shorts and locally-written pieces on our Community Theater stage. With the generous support of our congregation and community, we find a special area of worship in the spotlights and camaraderie of the theater and invite you to join in our fun here at the Manhattan Beach Community Church.Theater ChairJames Jeffery Caldwell

THIS SHOW IS DEDICATED IN LOVING MEMORY TO SALLY STOWE, MIKE NEARY AND LYLE STOLTENBERG

Author’s NotesEdgar Allan Poe was a giant in a time of literary giants: Hawthorne, Irving, Longfellow, Melville and Dickens. Poe invented the detective story and perfected the horror and science fiction genres, as well as influencing Baudelaire in France who set in motion the beginnings of art nouveau. Poe’s stories of the subconscious, dream-like worlds and of death influenced the works of Sigmund Freud and Salvador Dali. He was the seed from which the surrealistic and symbolist movements grew. Poe also influenced the writings of Jules Verne, Dostoevsky, Stephen King and many, many others. Poe’s connection with Dickens and his pet raven, Grip, can be seen at the Philadelphia Free Library where Grip is on display! http://www.atlasobscura.com/places/grip-raven

Poe was the first American to try and make a living as a writer. Before Poe, writing was an amusement for the rich. Poe was a critic without equal. His style of objective and pointed criticism is still revered today, but it also created enemies, including his own biographer and anthologist who portrayed Poe as a mad, womanizing, drunk drug addict, an image still taught today.

His death was a mystery. Many believe he died by “cooping,” a practice that was common at the time. The Tammany Hall machine was known for this practice. Voters were given a drink as a reward for voting; today we get a sticker. Some voters’ drinks were drugged and the voters would be forced to vote all day at different polling places using different clothes as a disguise. The coopers would be paid for each vote. Giving credence to the cooping theory, Poe’s jacket was found by the police on a person who had reported being cooped at the same polling place where Poe himself was found wearing clothes not his own.

We are proud to honor the poet’s memory, his Raven, and his other great literary achievements in this stage production as we transport you back to 1840s Baltimore.

A VALENTINE

For her this rhyme is penned, whose luminous eyes,    Brightly expressive as the twins of Lœda,

Shall find her own sweet name, that, nestling lies    Upon the page, enwrapped from every reader.Search narrowly the lines! -- they hold a treasure

Divine -- a talisman -- an amuletThat must be worn at heart. Search well the

measure --    The words -- the syllables! Do not forget

The trivialest point, or you may lose your labor!    And yet there is in this no Gordian knot

Which one might not undo without a sabre,    If one could merely comprehend the plot.

Enwritten upon the leaf where now are peering    Eyes scintillating soul, there lie perdus

Three eloquent words oft uttered in the hearing    Of poets, by poets -- as the name is a poet’s, too.

Its letters, although naturally lying    Like the knight Pinto -- Mendez Ferdinando --Still form a synonym for Truth. -- Cease trying!    You will not read the riddle, though you do the

best you can do.

CastErin Beck-Acain

This show - Erin's third Steve Norris extravaganza - comes to you courtesy a talented and patient cast of baby whisperers who showered Little Nugget with love and shiny objects even while she cried through most of Mommy's scenes. Erin thanks Susan for not letting her say 'no' to her first post-baby production, to Steve for challenging all of us with a new work, and to her cast - because of you, Munchkin is growing up surrounded by fiery fowls, hideous hearts, deadly devastating doom, and lots and lots of rats ... wait ... hmm ... well, for which she is immeasurably grateful. Also to her new family of three, Jose and Fae, merry band of

troupers we, finally and officially!

Kaia Fae AcainAt six months old, this is Kaia Fae's first ever theatre production! She just might remember bouncing through the Shipoopi in Music Man,  raging with hormones in Lovers, and getting twirled around by a vampire in Dracula, but she has to say that everyone is a lot more fun now that she can see them properly, climb their legs, and steal their hats. Fae is proud to join a long legacy of MBCC theatre babies and is excited to see how we'll fit her in next!
