However, there is uncertainty within the construction industry as to the amount of new projects coming out for tender in Saskatchewan over the next several months. This may result in temporary idleness for some tradespeople in the masonry industry. Many remain cautiously optimistic that new investments which take advantage of the current market climate will result in new projects being green-lighted and thus returning the local construction industry to higher levels of production. SMI continues to actively promote and represent the local masonry industry. Some of the initiatives SMI has been involved in over the past several months include: Planning two golf tournaments to give members a chance to network with the local design, and owner communities: Regina: Thursday, June 23 rd at the Royal Regina Golf Course Saskatoon: Thursday, July 21 st , at Riverside Golf and Country Club Sponsoring and attending relevant industry tradeshows including the Canadian HealthCare Engineering Society - Saskatchewan Chapter in Saskatoon, the Saskatchewan Association for Learning Environments Conference in Swift Current, and the Association of School Business Officials Tradeshow in Regina. Supporting U of S masonry research through continued materials procurement and student mentoring. Working to inform decision makers on the lifecycle cost benefits of masonry construction in commercial and institutional buildings. This year is proving to be a busy time at the Saskatchewan Centre for Masonry Design (SCMD) with masonry test specimens filling the lab floor.
A project exploring the possibilities of replacing traditional grouted steel reinforcing bars with un-bonded tendons has recently completed the testing stage. The outcomes of this work may result in the adoption of new construction practices which lower the capital costs associated with loadbearing masonry construction through reductions in the amount of required labour and materials.
Ten full-scale wall specimens were also recently constructed to explore the effects of dynamic out-of-plane loads on reinforced masonry walls with ideal pin supports. Testing commences shortly and a second phase of construction is planned for this summer. The results of this research will help refine procedures in future design codes and result in more efficient masonry structures.
Another research project will also be entering its first construction phase this summer with 9 full-scale masonry walls planned. This research is evaluating rational versus empirical design provisions for un-reinforced masonry walls in an effort to better understand various situations which can produce differing solutions between the two design methods and rectifying them. An additional second phase of construction and testing will be undertaken this fall.
The research project exploring cold weather construction techniques has also been progressing forward. This project is an effort to better understand the effects of these admixtures at the molecular level. Papers regarding earlier phases of this project were presented at the 12th North American Masonry Conference in Denver, Colorado and the 5th International Conference on Construction Materials in Whistler, British Columbia.
All of this research featuring the design, construction, and testing of full scale masonry specimens would not be possible without the support of the local masonry industry, the Canadian Concrete Masonry Producers Association, and the Canada Masonry Design Centre. Members of these associations understand the importance of investing back into their industry and universities to ensure future prosperity.

Gunnar Hagblom Scholarship
The University of Saskatchewan’s Annual Awards Ceremony was held on March 2nd, 2016. The Gunnar Hagblom Scholarship was presented to this year’s recipient Amir Rezaeivahdati by Sasha Kisin of the Canada Masonry Design Centre. Amir is a graduate student at the University’s Saskatchewan Centre for Masonry Design. Amir’s research is evaluating rational versus empirical design provisions for un-reinforced masonry walls in an effort to better understand various situations which can produce differing solutions between the two design methodologies and rectifying them.
In recent years, the Saskatchewan Masonry Institute has increased value of the annual Gunnar Hagblom Scholarship from a single $1000 prize to the opportunity for Awards Committee to grant up to two recipients $5000 each. This move further solidifies SMI’s continued commitment to supporting the world-class masonry research conducted at the Saskatchewan Centre for Masonry Design.

2016 Annual Conference
The Annual Conference was held January 28, 2016 at the Living Sky Casino - Sky Centre in Swift Current. The conference includes a tradeshow, educational opportunities, relevant speakers and is an outstanding opportunity to network with many key decision makers in the educational facility field. Delegates attending were personnel from School Divisions and the Ministry of Education, as well as Architects, Engineers, Contractors and Suppliers representing the whole spectrum of school facility design, planning, construction and operations. The Tradeshow was a success with approximately 100 people registered to attend.
On October 24, 2015, the Board of Directors of the Council of Educational Facility Planners International (CEFPI) unveiled the organization’s new name - the Association for Learning Environments. “Schools are designed, planned, and built at the local level”, said CEO John Ramsey. “Our regions and chapters are what make this organization function so well. Through this rebranding exercise we’ve moved from a top-down focus to a grassroots-up approach that ensures we provide our members the resources and tools they need to be successful.” “2015 was certainly an exciting year in our growing organization”, said Saskatchewan Chapter President Kirstin Mahan Thompson. “This re-branding has given a clear focus to where we are headed both internationally, and right here at home, and we will continually strive to improve the environments in which our young people learn.”
The Connections Café 2016 tradeshow was held Feb 18, 2016 at Hotel Saskatchewan Radisson Plaza in Regina. SMI participated once again this year and with over 100 invited guests in attendance, it was a huge success. CSC is a national multi-disciplinary, non-profit association with chapters across Canada. They are committed to ongoing development and delivery of quality education programs, publications and services for the betterment of the construction industry. For over 10 years, the Regina Chapter has offered sponsors the opportunity to network with invited potential specifiers and end users.

Spotlight on Careers is a partnership between the Saskatoon Construction Association, the Saskatoon Industry Education Council and the Saskatchewan Construction Association. This partnership was formed to introduce students in Grades 11 and 12 to viable careers in construction. The Association enlists representatives from different trades to engage with the students. These mentors are men and women who epitomize success and respect within the industry and in the community. The students are given the chance to interact with these mentors in an all-day event which included touring the Hampton Village Joint-Use School jobsite in Saskatoon, a walk-through of Saskatchewan Polytechnic and a Career Cafe that provided the students with a chance to ask the mentors any questions on a one-on-one basis. After this event, which was held on May 10, 2016, each student is given a chance to take part in the Summer Youth Internship Program. The program provides the students an opportunity to gain experience through internship in their chosen construction field.
Students were taken on a tour of the Hampton Village Joint-Use School jobsite in Saskatoon.
A tour of SIAST facility dedicated to training for the trades was part of the days excursion. This included a chance for the students to meet with industry representatives to learn more about the individual trades and the opportunities available to them.
The 71st Annual Saskatchewan Association of School Business Officials Annual Conference was held at the Hilton Double Tree Hotel in Regina on April 27, 2016. SASBO’s membership consists of 146 women and men in Saskatchewan who take a hands-on approach and manage every aspect of operating a school division including chief financial officers, finance, facilities, communications, information technology, transportation and HR. Along with the many informational sessions offered to the delegates, the festivities included a tradeshow in which the Saskatchewan Masonry Institute was one of 35 firms or associations who participated.

There are many different kinds of construction, including commercial, residential and roads and highways. Regardless of the kind of construction, many safety hazards exist.
