Bethel pushed their record to 9-4 on the season while Concordia fell to 12-3. Tayla Foster led Bethel with a career high 33 points and 15 rebounds. Senior Katie Van Dyke tied the school record for three-point field goals made in a game with eight. She finished with 24 points. Van Dyke is now fourth on the all-time school career list with 192 three’s. Kelli Rich is the school all-time leader with 222. Eight different players hit at least one three or more for the Lady Wildcats. The team had a season high 18 three-pointers in the contest. Bethel had 20 turnovers in the game while Concordia had only six but the Lady Cats shot 50 percent (34-67) from the floor and had a 48-33 advantage in rebounding. Bethel is now 6-0 when scoring 80 points or more in a game. Bethel Coach Chris Nelson said, “This is a huge win for our ladies. We continue to play tough games and it was great for our team to finish one out on the road. We wanted to treat this trip in similar fashion for the way you would prepare and play games in March. Tay and Katie stepped up and made plays all night but it was the bench that played a huge role for us tonight. By Ernie Smothers [email protected] HUNTINGDON (January 3) In a key high school basketball match-up between District 13A frontrunner McKenzie (8-0 district, 11-4 overall) and Huntingdon (6-2 district, 9-5 overall), Rebel Breshaun Oglesby’s clutch three-pointer from the right side with 54 seconds remaining in the contest gave his team its first lead of the contest and proved to be the game-winner as McKenzie earned a hard-fought, 70-66 win over a tough and determined Mustang squad. In the girls contest, the undefeated Huntingdon Fillies (8-0 district, 14-0 overall), fueled by the first period inside scoring of Hannah Belew (13) jumped out to 41-15 halftime lead and cruised to commanding, 68-45 win over the Lady Rebels. Rebels 70, Mustangs 66 Huntingdon jumped out to a 6-0 lead via Johnson trey, Justice Scott deuce off the glass and two Johnson charity swishes be- fore McKenzie responded via Jack Surber trey and Edwin Dudley putback to trail, 6-5, at the 4:59 mark of the first canto. Scott answered via base- line deuce and two charity swishes and Thomas Wheatley scored a two-pointer from the right side as Huntingdon led McKenzie at the end of the first frame, 20-17. Huntingdon’s Fay started second period scoring with a jumper that was answered via Owens drive. Mustang Scott converted two deuces inside and Wheatley bottomed two charity tosses as Huntingdon led, 29-23 at the 3:46 mark. McKenzie notched a deuce by Owens, solo charity swishes by Surber, Collin Smith and Owens before Owens stole the ball and scored to tie the contest at the end of the first half, 33-33. Resuming play in the second half, both squads utilized zone press and matched baskets as Huntingdon led at the 4:59 mark, 43-41. Mustang’s Macon Bullock and Wheat- ley drilled treys from the right side and Scott scored in the paint before Corey Wil- lis responded with a putback and Oglesby scored inside and added two charity tosses as McKenzie trailed at the end of the third stanza, 56-49. Scott assisted Fay in the paint to start fourth period scoring before Owens and Dudley scored via putbacks to narrow the Mustang lead to 56-55 at the 6:41 mark. Dudley added a reverse layup that was answered by a Scott deuce. McKenzie nar- McKenzie–Former UCLA Assistant Track & Field Coach Lamonte Vaughn has been hired as an assistant coach on the Bethel University Track and Field staff, announced Bethel Director of Athletics Dale Kelley. Vaughn was previously an assistant at the University of Washington, Eastern Kentucky University and Marshall University. The Chattanooga native was a two-time NCAA qualifier at 800 meters during his collegiate career at the University of Kentucky. He was a third place finisher in the 800 meters at the 1996 SEC Indoor Championships. The squad earned a first-round bye on Friday, June 28 due to their distinction as district tournament champions. On Saturday, June 29 the team bested Martin 22-12 and topped Milan 28-18. The boys then beat North Gibson, 27-26, on Sunday, June 30 before narrowly clinching the championship on July 1. The team competed in three tournaments and won all three championships and concluded with an overall record of 14-1. The team includes Landon Brown, Jake Cassidy, Ace Fisher, Hayden Garrett, Trey Gilbert, Memo Hickman, Fletcher Holt, Carter Kee, Austin New- some, Luke Toombs, Craegen Travis and Braxton Williams. Head Coach Clint Manns extends thanks to coaches Allen Brown and Josh Kee for their invalu- able assistance throughout the season. Dale Kelley Named Tennessee Outdoors Sportsman of the Year SPRINGVILLE (July 15, 2013) Legends of the Outdoors National Hall of Fame Board of Directors board member Tommy Garner announced that Dale Kelley of Huntingdon was chosen to receive the Tennessee Outdoor Sportsman of the Year Award. Kelley was instrumental in envisioning and leading the construction of Carroll County’s new 1,000-acre recreational lake. Dale Kelley’s vision, leadership and determina- tion has made the thirty-plus-year dream become a reality for the citizens of Carroll County and West Tennessee. Kelley is a Bethel University graduate who has of- ficiated nine consecutive NCAA playoffs and selected for three final four NCAA basketball tournaments. Kelley has had an impressive career in sports, busi- ness and politics as well. He has served as Coordinator of Officials for the Big 12 Conference, Conference USA, the Sunbelt Conference, the Southland Conference and the Ohio Valley Conference. An accomplished athlete, he has been named to the Bethel University Sports Hall of Fame, the TSSAA Hall of Fame, the Carroll County Sports Hall of Fame and the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame and serves on the Board of Directors for the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame. Kelley has served three terms in the Tennessee House of Representatives as well as nine years on the Huntingdon School Board. He currently serves as the Mayor of Huntingdon, a role he has held for 20 years as well as the Athletic Director for Bethel University. McKenzie 15U All Stars Win State Championship in Commanding Fashion Advances to Southeast Regional MCKENZIE (July 26) The McKenzie 15U Babe Ruth All Stars won the state title Thursday night by defeat- ing a tough Humboldt squad 11-0 and advancing to the 15U Babe Ruth Southeast Region Tournament in Lumberton, North Carolina. Having won the 15U Central District Babe Ruth Tournament last week in Camden, the McKenzie team returned home to host the 15U Babe Ruth State Tournament. During opening play, they topped Benton County before defeating last year’s defending 15U state cham- pions Lexington by a score of 7 to 4. San Antonio TX. –The No. 10 Bethel Lady Wildcats beat NAIA DII and No 7 ranked Concordia Monday night 99-92 in the Our Lady of the Lake University Halo Classic in San Antonio, Texas. Bethel pushed their record to 9-4 on the season while Concordia fell to 12-3.

Tayla Foster led Bethel with a career high 33 points and 15 rebounds. Senior Katie Van Dyke tied the school record for three-point field goals made in a game with eight. She finished with 24 points. Van Dyke is now fourth on the all-time school career list with 192 three’s. Kelli Rich is the school all-time leader with 222. Eight different players hit at least one three or more for the Lady Wildcats. The team had a season high 18 three-pointers in the contest.

HUNTINGDON (July 1) The McKenzie T-Ball team recently won the state championship for their divi-sion in competition at Huntingdon on Tuesday, July 1 as they beat North Gibson via a 30-29 final tally.
