The Message . . . August 2013 PASTORAL PONDERINGS
Have you ever asked, "What's going on at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church?" Or, "What can I get involved in?" Well, today is your lucky day! I just happen to have some answers to your questions. Holy Trinity Lutheran Church is a congregation that has vibrant ministries and growing mission opportunities. We categorize our ministries in the form of Ministry Teams. Each Ministry team has a council liaison; that helps to coordinate the role of their team. If there are one of these areas that you would like to know more about or get involved in, please ask a council member or me. Worship Ministries Team: This team is responsible for helping the pastor to plan worship and create new, artistic, innovative ways to transform our worship space seasonally. This team is also responsible for the preparation of services (altar guild), assisting ministers, ushers, acolytes, crucifers, and other items that help to make liturgy an experience to know God in a fuller way. Faith Formation Ministries Team: This team is responsible for the educational ministries within our congrega-tion and informing us of other opportunities in our community. This team coordinates Sunday school for children, youth and adults. Vacation Bible School and Adult Forums on various topics, as well. Pastor Kevin leads Theology Uncorked once a month at a local restaurant or bar. This is an opportunity to discuss a theo-logical (God-talk) topic or social issue in a relaxed setting (and a good beer). Serving Ministries Team: This team is responsible for our outreach ministry: Habitat for Humanity, Nashville AIDS Walk, Breast Cancer Walk, other walks, Room in the Inn, Second Harvest, Lutheran Services in Tennessee, ELCA initiatives. Supporting and Growing Ministries Team: This team is broad and vast and includes in it: Finance, Mutual Ministry, Long Range Vision Team, Capital Campaign Team, Stewardship, Property, tellers, etc. Proclaiming Ministries Team: This team works to help us tell the story of what God has done, is doing and continues to do in our lives and the lives of others. Working with neighborhood canvasing, evangelism, new member orientation and inquirers classes. As well: marketing, publicity, newsletters, e-news, Facebook and website. Parish Life Ministries Team: This team includes fellowship opportunities for our congregation, such as: Sunday Morning coffee time, Gourmand Society (monthly group that eats at local restaurants), funeral receptions, and other. This team coordinates groups that use our building and works to build bridges between them and the congregation: AA, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Reading Group for children, Montessori School. Lastly, under this comes our participation in the annual Bellevue Picnic and Oktoberfest. We are not a church because one person makes it all happen and we cannot BE church in the world; if we don't work together for the mission and ministry God has called us into. No matter your age, physical abilities or inabilities, gender, or anything else; you are needed in this place! You make a difference! You are a worker in the kingdom of God, not alone, but together with one another. Continued on next page

Pastoral Ponderings continued When we allow God to be the primary actor in our mission and ministry, going out into the mission filed of this world together as his body, we accomplish wonderful, life changing things together. As St. Teresa of Avila reminds us: Christ has no body on earth but yours; no hands but yours; no feet but yours. Yours are the eyes through which the compassion of Christ looks out to the world. Yours are the feet with which he is to go about doing good. Yours are the hands with which he is to bless others now. May we be that Body together in this world, proclaiming the Good News of freedom, liberty, and justice; that only God can give. Amen. Walking with you on the journey. . . . Pastor Kevin L. Strickland

About All Kids Sunday School • August 11, 2013 marks the start of our fifth year using Augsburg-Fortress's SPARK Rotation materials. In the rotational model, children in pre-K and up spend 4-6 weeks exploring a single story or theme. We begin with Old Testament in the fall, then move into stories about Jesus and his followers in the winter and spring, with attention to major festivals (Advent, Christmas, Holy Week, Easter, and Pentecost). This year's units include stories of Hannah, Samuel, and David, the Annunciation, the Psalms, Jesus's healings, and the 12 disciples. • Each week begins with singing in the worship area, then moves into interactive storytelling, snack, a hands-on activity, and closing prayer. Cooking and games have proved great favorites (we have active kids who like to eat!), along with art, drama, and science exploration. Stories are approached with playfulness, wonder, and a sense of humor. Our goal is that regulars will not be bored, while newcomers and visitors will never be lost. • The rotational model takes into account the interests and abilities of each child and the gifts of the entire congregation. We are always looking for adults and youth open to joining our planning team, leading an

The kids had a GREAT time at Vacation Bible School last week! Through their special
offerings, the children raised enough money to purchase three Lutheran World Relief
"Gift of Worms", helping farmers in developing countries improve their soil quality and
grow more crops. They also collected large piles of beans and microwaveable entrées for
Second Harvest, as well as soap and toothpaste for Lutheran Social Service's Building
Healthy Families program.
Many thanks to all the children, youth and adult volunteers, parents, and grandparents
who took part in TAKING ROOT VBS!
Special thanks to the amazing CHERYL MENDENHALL who was the
coordinator extraordinaire for VBS!! We appreciate all you do!

Habitat for Humanity Unity Build Help us build a home with over 20 local faith communities in the Habitat Unity Build, scheduled for September and October!
Habitat provides a hand up to low income families who live in substandard housing. Remember: these homes are not hand outs! Each family purchases their home. The families are required to invest many hours of "sweat equity,” working on their future home as well as those of their future neighbors. As well, families participate in classes to learn budgeting and home maintenance skills.
Our build day is Sunday, September 22nd!! Please contact Linn Folger for more details!!
