Time truly does pass quickly. I can say without
reservation that my first year as President of
Archbishop Ryan has been the most fulfilling
and rewarding of my career. As proud and
excited as I was to receive my appointment I am
even more thrilled to be your President today.
Inside these walls is something very special –
something of lasting value. The school’s
leadership as always been steadfast in our
mission and in our Catholic identity. The
opportunities for faith based personal growth,
community engagement, lessons in leadership,
athletic competition and extra-curricular
activities provide an experience that is truly
second to none. Archbishop Ryan High School
faculty and administrators remain committed to
academic excellence and challenging students to
strive for their greatest potential .
One of my biggest assets during my first year,
was having Mr. Jim Meredith leading our efforts
to educate our students in body, mind, and spirit.
He had a clear vision and unique talent for
educating and empowering each and every
student and ingraining in them the leadership
qualities to prepare them to be saints for this life
and the next. Mr. Meredith's leadership and
commitment to excellence made us all want to
be better and do better in our professional and
personal roles. He changed us forever and on
July 1 he was appointed principal of Pope John
Paul II where he will do the same. His biggest
legacy was the mentoring of Mr. Joe McFadden
'97, Assistant Principal of Academic Affairs,
who was appointed principal of Ryan on July
13.
Together we are committed to securing Ryan's
position as a premier center of secondary
education in Philadelphia. Know that at
Archbishop Ryan students experience a deep
sense of community while receiving an
education that will serve as a foundation for a
life that is productive, rewarding, and socially
responsible. Students join us at a critical time in
their lifelong journey of awareness and faith.
We take tremendous responsibility for
increasing their knowledge, enriching their faith
and helping them become the next generation of
leaders in a world that cries out for leadership.
Students who enroll at Ryan and firmly commit
to avail themselves of as much as they can of
what we have to offer will leave us after four
years with a joy and a foundation for the future

The Principal’s Perspective Mr. Joseph McFadden ‘97
As I sit to write this newsletter, I am struck
wondering where the year has gone. The grief, sadness, pain, fear that we may have experienced this year can subside to the hope
evident in Advent. Here we are entering the first week of Advent, preparing for the Christmas season, a time of joy, optimism,
and a reminder of God’s love for us. As we move through December, we will be
preparing to celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior. Nearly forty of our seniors will attend a Kairos retreat this weekend. We will
continue with our traditional Ryan Family Christmas Prayer Service, Tree Lighting, and Concert. All families are invited to this special
evening. We will also welcome our partner pastors and parish priests who will be present this month so that students can properly
prepare for Christmas through the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Finally, on the day break

We also look to continue our “Christmas Sweater Contest” and “Christmas Sock Contest.” Mr. Panepresso and a group of

May the peace and joy of Christmas be with
you and your family today and throughout the New Year. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
School Safety Mr. Joseph McFadden ‘97 As Principal of Archbishop Ryan, I wish to thank you for your support during last month’s lockdown. As an administration, we take seriously the trust you place in us to care for your
children spiritually, academically, and physically. Throughout the entire process, the safety and security of your children was paramount. Once we received word of the threat and began investigating, we instituted an external and internal lockdown. Police were notified and
continued the investigation. Once it was determined that there was no immediate threat in the building, faculty and students were informed over the PA but the lockdown did remain in place
until authorized by the police and we knew the situation to be resolved at the school level. At that time, school resumed and students and faculty continued their day. I thank many of your for your kind words and feedback concerning the day.
Students were allowed, even encouraged, to let you know they were safe. I understand the
need to communicate and to determine your children are ok. That is a benefit of cell phones and social media. The downside is then students and adults put rumors on social media that
they believe to be fact. It only makes a situation worse and causes more panic. Once all was cleared, we placed a School Messenger call, released a statement on the website and social media, and read it to the student body. It is combatting the rumors that is most difficult. For
example, earlier in November there was a rumor of a student bringing a weapon to school. The rumor expanded to a threat against a student then a threat against a whole class. This rumor
caused a student to be suspended until the matter was fully investigated. Once investigated, a boy’s name was dragged through the mud and it was determined that nothing in that manner was said. It was all the result of rumors. Students were called down regarding the rumor and
they told us they were only repeating something they heard from someone else. No one would like their name ruined in such a manner. Please remind your children of the dangers of rumors
and the importance of reporting what they hear to the school not just to one another. Our school is committed to the safety and security of all members of the Archbishop Ryan
community. All threats are taken seriously and investigated thoroughly in cooperation with local law enforcement agencies.
Please take this opportunity to remind your sons and daughters of the importance of speaking up and making a report if they see or hear anything that might jeopardize school safety.
Drop-off and Pickup Mr. Joseph McFadden ‘97 In discussing school safety, I would be remiss if I did not mention some issues relating to our
parking lot for student pickup and drop-off: Students should be dropped off in the back outside the cafeterias, not at the front lobby
entrances.
Do not park along the curb in the fire lane. It limits two lanes from driving in the lot.
Please drive slowly in our lot and do not drive around cars.
You should drive completely around the lot. Do not use the side parking areas to turn
your car around. Students and adults are parking and getting out of cars in these areas.
To those parents who insist on dropping off their children on Academy Road, please
exercise caution pulling back into traffic and be mindful of our students crossing the road.
Christmas Gift Suggestions The best gifts to give:
To your friend, loyalty; To your enemy, forgiveness;
To a customer, service; To a child, a good example;
To your parents, gratitude and devotion;
To your mate, love and faithfulness; To all men and women, charity.
To yourself, respect. ~ Oren Arnold
From the Office of the President Mrs. Denise LePera
In November we celebrated a bereavement mass for alumni and their families. This year we gathered as a community with nearly 250 family members on the evening of All Souls Day. It was very beautiful and meant so much to those were able to attend. May their souls and the
souls of the faithfully departed rest in peace.
My hope is that this Thanksgiving you were able to spend time with family and loved ones. A time to reflect on all there is to give thanks for! It is with a very grateful heart that I say thank you for entrusting your sons and daughters with the Ryan family. They are the treasures of your
lives, and the Ryan community embraces them and prepares them well.
The season of Advent is now upon us. As we wait for the birth of Jesus, it is a time to reflect on the true meaning of Christmas. It is easy to get caught up in the hectic-ness of the season. We can't help ourselves. My prayer for you is that this Advent season may your hearts be open to
the true meaning of Christmas. As the shopping increases and you are looking for those last minute gifts, take a minute to pause to reflect. Come and share with us our very special Ryan
Family Prayer Service and Christmas Tree Lighting on December 16th at 6:30 pm.
Blessings to you and those you love for a very Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy New Year!

From the School Minister Father Daniel Dwyer
Here we are in December, a month spent preparing in so many ways for Christmas. The season of Advent calls us to prepare and, more importantly, shows us how God prepared for the
Redeemer to come. Mary’s “yes” and Joseph’s acceptance of his role as her husband began a sequence of events leading them to Bethlehem. God’s preparation began centuries before. Kings, prophets, and thousands of ordinary people had said “yes” to God’s plan long before
Mary’s “yes.” Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem, the stable, the star, and the shepherds were all part of a Divine plan.
Have you ever recognized that God prepared you for what came next? Usually, this fact doesn't dawn on us until we are well into that “next” aspect of our life and we realize how God’s hand
has been working in the people and events we encountered. We, like all those before us, have a place in God’s plan of salvation. We are constantly invited to add our “yes” to Mary’s, to be
attentive to the promptings of the Holy Spirit, and to enter fully into the task of building the kingdom.
As we prepare to celebrate Christ’s coming, let's prepare for Bethlehem experiences in our own lives so that Jesus, the Savior might be more clearly known and ever more deeply loved and
worshiped in our hearts and in the hearts of our brothers and sisters.
A Good Christmas Confession A good preparation for Christmas includes a good confession. In the sacrament of Reconciliation, Jesus is at work forgiving, healing, restoring, rekindling, and making right whatever sin has
adversely affected within people. Our students will receive the sacrament this month during their Theology classes. I pray that all in our community open the door to Jesus in the sacrament of
Reconciliation and allow him to rekindle love, peace, and joy within them.
Christmas Caroling On Saturday, December 19, we will take part in our third annual Christmas Caroling Tour. Our group of students will visit with and entertain the residents of area nursing homes, including Saint Joseph’s Manor. Any student who has not signed up and who wishes to attend can stop by
the ministry office for the necessary permission forms.
Kairos Retreat The February Kairos retreat registration is ongoing. It is being conducted on a first come, first served basis until all spots have been filled. Please note that the Kairos retreat is open to members of the senior class only. For further information on Kairos, please go to the Ministry
section of the Ryan website and click on the Kairos tab.
Christian Service All students in grade 11 are required to complete 20 hours of Christian service this school year. Students have received a packet of information pertaining to the program. Parents and
guardians are urged to look over the material (also available on the Ministry section of the Ryan website by clicking on the Christian Service tab). Questions about the Christian service requirements can be emailed to me.
Parent Teacher
Conferences
Monday, December 7
6:00PM – 8:00PM
By Appointment Only
From the Office of Academic Affairs Mrs. Nancy Kurtz ‘88
The second quarter began on Monday, November 16. Report cards were mailed out on Friday,
November 20. For First Honors, students need a quarterly average of 93 with no single grade below 90. For Second Honors, students need a quarterly
average of 88 with no single grade below 85.
The first Parent Teacher night of the year will take place on Monday, December 7 so that the conversation can include the first quarter and the
student’s progress in the second quarter. Conferences are by appointment and scheduled
through a link on the Archbishop Ryan website. To sign-up for a conference, find the link on the Ryan website. Once you click on the link taking you
to the sign-up page, you will need to enter your name, email address, phone number, and your
child’s name. Below that you will see a list of all the teachers at Ryan. Depending on the teacher or teachers you would like to see, you will select a
time from the drop-down menu under their name. Times are in 8 minute intervals. Be sure to consider
travel time when selecting your times. When a time is selected by a parent or guardian, the time is unavailable to be selected by anyone else.
Continual communication between parents, guardians, teachers and students is vital for success
of any child. If you are concerned about your child's progress in any subject or if you simply have some questions, please make an appointment to speak with the teacher. If your child failed a class, you are strongly encouraged to attend and to speak with your child’s
teacher.
In the past we have spoken about our school's commitment to improving reading, writing, speaking and listening skills for our students across all content areas. As part of this commitment, we have had a program called Our Book, Our School (formally called One Book,
One School) at Ryan for the last three years. This program, which requires all students, faculty and administration members to read one common book, is designed to create an atmosphere of
interest and excitement around a shared topic. Our Book, Our School allows the entire Ryan community to share a common experience and begins a place of discussion and sharing that will
be built upon in classrooms throughout the school. This program builds community in our school while at the same time fostering a love for reading.
This year is very exciting as the book selected, Legend, by Marie Liu, was voted on by the current sophomore, junior and senior classes. It is also our first fiction selection. I would like to
invite you to be a part of our efforts also. You are such a rich part of our Ryan family and I invite you to participate in this program either by reading the book yourselves or by simply talking to your children about the experience. Study after study has shown that children who read are
more successful in school. Children learn to love reading when they see others they care about and respect read. Together, we can build a literature rich culture for our students and encourage
their love for the written word.
If your child needs information for applications concerning their GPA, rank, or overall average, they should stop in the Academic Affairs Office during their lunch period for that information and
we will be happy to help them.
May you find peace and joy as we continue our Advent preparations and may you have a blessed Christmas season. As a final note, if you are struggling trying to think of a last minute gift or stocking-stuffer for your child may I suggest a Legend!
From the Office of Student Services Mr. Charles Panepresso ‘79
The winter season is upon us although the temperature at times during the day feels like it is
springtime. The winter uniform went into effect November 16, 2015. Uniform check is conducted in homeroom each day. Wearing of the ID card is part of the uniform. Students are asked to
stop in the office of student services for a replacement ID card. It is my hope that ID cards for freshman will be issued in December. My apologies for the delay as we had a problem with the company in securing the correct code numbers for the new cards.
The form for early dismissal can be printed from the school website under the student life link.
The form is to be dropped off before homeroom in the office of student services in order to complete the attendance report for the day. Detention lists for both late detention and general detention are posted each week in the cafeteria one day before the detention. Late detention is
each Thursday after 8th period until 3 PM in the north cafeteria. General detention is Friday morning at 6:50 AM in the north lecture hall.
Finally, it is important that students are dropped off in the morning behind the school outside the cafeteria doors to alleviate the traffic congestion entering the school grounds. Also, it is
important that no cars park along the driveway at either entrance while waiting for your child before dismissal. Please park in the front of the building.
The Advent season is upon us. May this season of light fill your home with hope and peace. God
bless you.
From the Office of Student Affairs Mrs. Kathryn Schafer ‘72
