ST. LUKE’S EPISCOPAL CHURCH ~ SAN LUCAS IGLESIA EPISCOPAL
Volume 48
Issue 3
Rector’s Corner WE CAN HELP I finished reading Michael Eric Dyson’s Tears We Can-
not Stop: A Sermon to White America. He has some recom-
mendations for us. I repeat them to you because they
have the solid underpinning of Gospel imperatives,
and may help us to understand the very special voca-
tion that St Luke’s ~ San Lucas [SL2] has been called by
God to follow.
On September 13, 1998 SL2 embarked on a new minis-
try in Spanish to the community of immigrants from
Latin America that were growing in Vancouver. [BTW,
I have always thought it started in 1999!] That makes
our ministry almost 19 years old. Even if you never
paid any attention to this ministry in your time here, it
has had a big influence on us all: I would not have been
called to be Rector, since I was bilingual and experi-
enced in Hispanic ministry, if SL2 had not had this
ministry.
Now the immigrant community is a community in per-
il, with many children who are at risk of suddenly los-
ing their parents to deportation. These children are U.S.
Citizens. They are vulnerable, and the fear is palpable
no matter what your age is. We can help.
SL2 Vestry has formed an Immigration Committee to
create a response for the church to address the con-
cerns of the community. We have work to do in this
arena. We can help. Our particular vocation is taking
shape right now in our solidarity and response to this
present situation.
Think about the future of these children: They will
need ways to get an education past high school, to get
either good trade skills or college degrees. We can help.
Parents are struggling to make up the tens of thou-
sands of dollars to file their papers. We can help. Pa-
perwork is confusing and difficult. We can help. Join us
at our Last Sunday Potlucks after the Spanish service,
and help assuage the fears. We can help. Get to know a
family, make friends and build the bridges. We can
help.

informal. Pasamos tiempo conociéndonos y
discerniendo nuestras fortalezas y pasiones.
algún momento, van a celebrar reuniones parroquiales
No sabíamos
Algunas puertas no estaban
so, olivas (aceitunas), frutas secas, pan y vino. Espera-

compartir!
Meta 2: Expandir Programas Sociales
WHAT planea regresar a San Pablo a principios de
No había
fugio.
9 mujeres se quedaron menos de un mes
7 se quedaron de 1-2 meses.
6 se quedaron todas las 15 semanas.
3 mujeres ahora alquilan habitaciones y 1 encuen-

tran su propio lugar.
4 mujeres trabajan.
3 perros y 1 gato han permanecido en diferentes
horarios.

Pascua y nuestra actividad será decorar huevos.

THE PASCHAL TRIDUUM Three days that define the Christian faith return every
year in our church calendar. They are Maundy Thurs-
day, with the Institution of the Eucharist (“do this in
remembrance of me”), the foot washing, (John’s gos-
pel alternative to the Last Supper), and the Agape
meal; then Good Friday, with the solemn collects and
the veneration of the Cross; and finally the Great Vigil
of Easter when we remember that in the dark hours
after nightfall on Saturday Jesus rises from the dead,
and we light the new Pascal Candle with a newly kin-
dled fire. The Pascal Candle will be used for the whole
year for baptisms and funerals, the start and the end
of life, as well as being displayed lit during all of the
Easter season. At the Vigil we light our own little can-
dles from the Pascal Candle and do a brief review of
the story of our relationship with God. All these ser-
vices are bilingual, celebrated together.
Beneath the “Paschal” days is the older celebration of
the Passover (pesach) of the Hebrews (see Exodus 11
& 12). The angel of destruction passes over the people,
sparing the first born of the Hebrews by the sacrificial
lamb who saves the people by blood. The agape meal
resonates with the people, shoes and travel clothes on,
who must leave in the dead of the night to escape
their oppressors, the Egyptians. The story is rich in
symbols and meaning, and you are invited to join in
the story and make it your own.
STATIONS OF THE CROSS
Fridays during Lent and Holy Week at 12:15 PM we
will offer prayers of the Stations of the Cross. Often
this is lay led. If the occasion permits, we will do it bi-
lingually.
RITE OF RECONCILIATION A little used part of our prayer book (BCP, pp. 447-
452) is a rite for Confession, as it was once called. Epis-
copalians say about this rite, “All may, none must,
some should. I recommend for everyone regardless of
whether you think this rite is for you to read Reconcili-
ation: Preparing for Confession in the Episcopal
Church, by Martin L. Smith, SSJE. The use of a priest is
not required. You may do this with someone whose
spiritual counsel you find valuable. The rite is also on
the website at http://www.stlukesvancouver.com/,
“On the Lenten Practice of Confession (The Rite of
Reconciliation).” Fr. Jaime Case

THE MESSENGER EL MENSAJERO 9
SENIOR WARDEN’S MESSAGE It’s March as I am writing this and I am ready for
spring. I think we are all feeling exhausted from this
winter. A day of sunshine changes our entire outlook
on life. I hope we see a few more of them.
Your vestry had an excellent retreat the end of Febru-
ary. Everyone was able to be present which made our
time together very valuable. The home setting was
comfortable and casual. We spent time getting to
know each other and discerning our strengths and
passions. There was thoughtful discussion about our
goals and whether it was time to go back to the parish
and revisit the work that was done a few years ago.
Have our goals changed? Do they need to be updated
or modified? This will be a discussion that will be con-
tinued throughout the year. We also introduced the
concept of year round stewardship and passed out a
schedule of topics for our meetings to make this an
integral part of our work this year. Of course, we got
to break bread together which helped with our bond-
ing. We ended with a Eucharist around the dining
room table. Fitting end to a day of hard work.
One of the orders of business was committee assign-
ments. Because we had a serious discussion around
immigration issues and the effect on our San Lucas
family, we asked Melanie Kenoyer and Elizabeth
Reyes-Ruiz to form a committee to discern what we as
a church family should do. That committee is meeting
and is planning some education for all of us around
immigration. They are also researching what other
faith communities are doing. At some point, they will
be holding parish meetings to get everyone’s input.
Once that is done, just as we did with the shelter com-
mittee, they will bring the vestry some recommenda-
tions for approval and implementation.
Speaking of the shelter, we met with Share in Febru-
ary. This was part of our contract with them, to meet
and review how things are going. The meeting was
very positive. One thing the shelter has done for us is
to highlight some security concerns around our build-
ing. We did not know someone was scaling the gate
on the Fourth Plain side and sleeping in our court-
yard. There is now a new gate with wire over it so it is
more difficult to scale. Some doors were not locking
completely and people were getting into the building.
We thanked them for helping us make our building
more secure. The new windows are in and the ladders
are being installed in the window wells. A plan to
build a shower is in process. We talked with them
about continuing the relationship after March 31. This
PALM CROSS MAKING The Altar Guild invites one and all to our Annual
Palm Cross Making. It will be in the Parish Hall on
Saturday, April 8 at 10:00 AM. Questions? Please call
Carol Hiltz or Sandra Kimura.
EASTER FLOWERS We will have lots of special flowers ordered for Easter
Sunday. We ask your help to fund these special
plants. Any amount you give is appreciated, as a me-
morial if you wish. The flower offering envelopes are
in the Narthex. Please print your name and the name
(s) of loved ones you wish remembered. A phone
number would be helpful in case we have any ques-
tions.
AGAPÉ MEAL - MAUNDY THURSDAY Join us on April 13 at 6:00 PM. This meal will be meat-
less, the setting austere and the food sparse and sim-
ple. Appropriate foods include (meatless) soup,
cheese, olives, dried fruit, bread and wine. Please add
your name to sign-up in the Narthex if you are com-
ing, and if you can bring a portion of the meal. Also
there’s a place to sign-up for set-up and clean-up. We
request food donations for our Outreach pantry to
feed the hungry. After the Agapé Meal we move to
the church for a bilingual service of Holy Eucharist, at
7:00 PM.
GOOD FRIDAY OFFERING Good Friday Offering reaches back to 1922 when The
Episcopal Church sought to create new relationships
with and among the Christians of the Middle East.
Through the years the generous donations of Episco-
palians help the Christian presence in the Land of the
Holy One to be a vital and effective force for peace
and understanding among all of God’s children. All
donations received on Good Friday will go to support
the Christians of the Middle East.
10 THE MESSENGER EL MENSAJERO
will depend on their funding and staffing. We hope it
can continue.
Easter will be upon us soon. I hope we can all take part
in the services that lead up to Easter Sunday. It is a re-
markable journey. I wish all of you a peaceful end to
Lent and a wonderful Easter season.

Goal 1: Develop relationships between the Anglo & Hispanic
STEWARDSHIP What is stewardship? The Episcopal Church defines
stewardship “as more than simply contributing money
to the church; it’s about contributing time and talents,
and volunteering for ministry and mission. It’s about
reaching out to build relationships from a perspective
of abundance instead of scarcity”.
In my research on stewardship, I found the following
quote from Chris Brown: “The reality is that many peo-
ple today, including lots of Christians, don’t under-
stand the true meaning of stewardship. And that’s a
tragedy. Why? Because stewardship is our ultimate
calling as Christ followers. Stewardship is managing
God’s blessings”
You will hear the word stewardship a lot this year. The
vestry has adopted a model of year round stewardship
for their meetings. This means they will be discussing
the many ways we can contribute to the mission and
ministries of St. Luke’s ~ San Lucas. They will also be
discussing what stewardship looks like in their own
lives. This is separate from the pledge campaign.
What does stewardship mean to you? Have you even
thought about the things you do at St. Luke’s ~ San Lu-
cas in terms of stewardship? Here are a few examples.
The Ushers and Greeters are a form of stewardship be-
cause they are following our mission of welcoming
everyone. The choir is part of the stewardship of our
liturgy. The Thursday Crew is essential in the steward-
ship of our building and grounds. The people who staff
the outreach during the week perform stewardship for
our community. Our Sunday school teachers are the
stewards of our children. Bob Stevens and Michael
Moorefield who buffed and polished the parish hall
floor performed an act of stewardship. Joey who over-
sees our kitchen facilities performs many acts of stew-
ardship each week. Our treasurer who oversees our
finances practices resource stewardship. The list could
go on and on.
What stewardship looks like to me currently is my role
as Senior Warden. I feel my role is to steward our lead-
ership team and our clergy. It is to give a smile, a hug,
a listening ear to someone who needs it. I hope I can be
a good steward at St. Luke’s ~ San Lucas this year.
The job of the vestry this year will be to highlight the
many areas where everyone can practice stewardship.
As we become familiar with this term and the broad
definition, we will each find a place where we can con-
tribute our time and talent. This will bring us closer as
a church family as we will all be working for a com-
mon purpose.

COME HAVE LUNCH WITH US ON
PALM SUNDAY! The Immigration Committee invites our 8 AM and 10
AM family to a light lunch on Sunday, April 9 at
11:30AM. While we are eating, we will provide some
information about immigration and answer any ques-
tions you may have.
CHURCH SPRING CLEANING Spring Cleaning will be April 29, Saturday, at 9:00 am.
We need people to help with the many tasks around
our church, gardens, and more. We will have sweet
bread and coffee.
LET’S EAT TOGETHER!
CONGREGATIONAL POTLUCKS Last Sunday of every month
2:30-3:30PM - this month on April 30
Sharing food and eating with others is at the center of
our Christian and Episcopal identities. The Holy Food
we eat binds us as a community that is sent to love
and serve the Lord in our everyday lives. Historically,
the practice of sharing food and eating together, be it
Holy Bread or a bagel, have been a symbol and a sign
of transformational fellowship. In times of social frag-
mentation and divisiveness Christians are called to
come together and strengthen their communal bonds
of love.
On the last Sunday of every month we will have the
opportunity for the whole congregation of St. Luke’s ~
San Lucas to come together to share food and stories.
Bring something delicious to share!
GATEKEEPERS WANTED!! The Immigration Committee seeks Parishioners from
the SL2 Anglo services to assist our San Lucas family.
We need 2-3 people who can donate 2 hours on Sun-
days during the San Lucas service to secure the build-
ing, watch the parking lot and surrounding streets for
presence of ICE. We want to provide a feeling of safe-
ty during these services. The sign-up sheet is in the
Narthex. Questions? Please Contact Melanie Kenoyer
360-433-1341.
Goal 2: Expand Outreach LOCAL BUSINESS SUPPORTING OUR
OUTREACH EFFORTS It is a good reminder that we aren’t in this alone! We
have wonderful support from a local bakery that pro-
vides bagels, pastries and cookies twice a week that is
used to help feed the hungry from our building. Once
a year we receive an annual report from this bakery
with a detailed list of their donations. During 2016
they donated 9,272 baked goods for a value of $20,172!
We are very thankful for their generosity.
OUTREACH CLOTHES CLOSET Currently we can only accept men's clothes for our
clothes closet. Our supply of women’s and children’s
clothes has far exceeded the need so we cannot accept
any more of these. Men’s clothing is needed, especial-
ly smaller and medium sizes. Thank you for your con-
tinued support!
WHAT SHELTER UPDATE After St Luke's ~ San Lucas provided over 1200 bed
nights to vulnerable women this winter, the WHAT
program plans to return to St Paul's in early April,
and return to us November 1. There was no room at
any other 'inn' December 19, when St Luke's ~ San Lu-
cas and WHAT partnered to provide a warm and wel-
coming space, a place where the guests are offered
respect, safety, compassion, snacks and some needed
basic items. Nearly a month ago, new efficient (egress)
windows were put in all five rooms Share uses. The
janitor closet sink provides a place to wash one's hair.
Thanks to the generosity of many parishioners, the
women have supplies available to do a few crafts
when they have energy left at day's end. Sometimes
they found a warm crock pot of soup and some have
received donated home furnishings when they move.
Especially given this extended cold, wet winter, it
goes without saying, the warm and dry facility is a
significant, ongoing gift to the women. One of the first
shelter guests cried, "I cannot remember the last time I
had a bed of my own to make". The women appreci-
ate each having two of their own storage tubs, kept
secure during the day. It becomes a luxury for a per-
12 THE MESSENGER EL MENSAJERO
son who is homeless to have a bathroom down the
hall that they can use when they want. In so many
ways, the twelve beds offered in our basement offer
far more than a good night's sleep.
Some statistics of interest for the WHAT shelter dur-
ing their 15 weeks here, provided by Janice Van
Frederic, WHAT Director:
22 women, ages 27 to 69, were provided shelter.
9 women stayed under a month
7 stayed 1-2 months.
6 stayed all 15 weeks.
3 women now renting rooms and 1 found her own
place.
4 women are working.
3 dogs and 1 cat have stayed at varying times.

ing those three hours. Please mark calendars for this
delicious and important effort. Volume counts in per-
centage fund-raisers, so please join us and invite oth-

12th ANNUAL BABY SHOWER FOR
“BABIES IN NEED” SUNDAY, MAY 7 You’re invited to St. Luke's ~ San Lucas’ Baby Shower
for “Babies in Need” on Sunday, May 7, at 11:30PM in
the Parish Hall. We are asking for gifts of new or gen-
tly used layette supplies (see list below) or monetary
donations. If you are gifting by check, please make it
payable to “Babies In Need”. Outreach Committee
“Babies In Need” is an outreach program of All Saints
Episcopal Church in Hazel Dell that began in 1999 to
serve our neighbors and newly-delivered moms fac-
ing daunting challenges: single-parenthood, very little
income, physical or mental disabilities, alcohol or
drug histories, premature infants, homelessness, or
the breadwinner’s job loss. They have nothing or very
little for their new baby.
Due to donations from many, this program is always
ready with a layette gift bag of essentials and a car
seat to help meet immediate needs. Birth Center So-
cial Workers at PeaceHealth SW and Legacy Salmon
Creek hospitals identify moms who need help. When
moms receive our car seat and bag of lovely baby
things they know someone cares and that they are not
alone in the world.
“Babies In Need” layette gift bags contain gowns, pa-
jamas, fleece sacques, onesies, sweaters, caps, blankets
& quilts, diapers & wipes, a soft, cuddly toy and use-
ful accessories. Many items are new, beautifully
handmade or gently-used. All diapers are donated by
PeaceHealth Southwest!
Car seats are the big expense. Even with bargain-
hunting, they cost us $10,000+ last year. We put cash
donations to good use for car seats.
As we serve others in our community in Christ’s
name, our own lives are transformed. God is faithful.
Thank you for being a strong link in God’s chain of
abundant blessings.
Blessings, Kitty Ash, Director of Babies In Need

FUND RAISING THROUGH
BOOMERANG The special March Spring Housecleaning Campaign
was successful with more than 12 parishioners partici-
pating with their gifts. One gift of a dining table and
chairs will add more than $250 to our share of March
sales. Many thanks to all who donated during March.
Our share of sales in the consignment shop is received
in the month following sale so the final accounting for
March will take some time.
Our fund raising program through the partnership
with Boomerang continues throughout the year. You
may bring your gift to the parish hall stage or take
them directly to the shop at 808 Main St., Downtown
Vancouver. If you need help with large heavy items
please notify the church office and we can arrange
THE MESSENGER EL MENSAJERO 13
pickup. Costume jewelry is a very popular sale item
and you may bring your gift to the church office.
Boomerang has a staff member who places certain
items for sale on Ebay or Craig’s List when it’s likely
to be sold at a price higher than sale at the Consign-
ment shop. If a gift item does not fit Boomerang’s cri-
teria for sale, it is given to SHARE HOUSE for their
program of furnishing new housing for homeless fam-
ilies.

CHILDREN’S SUNDAY SCHOOL In March we began the many faces of Easter as we
went into Lent. We also learned about St. Patrick. On
Palm Sunday, we will share the story of the Easter egg
and our activity will be to decorate eggs.
It is that time of year now where we will
begin to get ready for our amazing Easter
egg hunt! To make the day extra special,
we will need help with getting more plastic
Easter eggs and candy. Last year was my
first year organizing the hunt and I realized that it is a
really big event. To make it better and more orga-
nized, I will need volunteers to help with filling, hid-
ing, and getting the children ready for the actual hunt
itself. The children and I really appreciate everything
that our wonderful community does to come together
and make this day great and I can't wait for it to be an
even better event for them this year.
Herlinda Marquez- Sunday School Coordinator.
FIRST COMMUNION CLASS “First” Communion class begins Sunday, April 23 at
12 noon in the Fireside room, downstairs. We prac-
tice open communion for any baptized person, even a

for elementary school children (3rd grade and above)
who can read and write, and so participate more fully
in the Sunday worship. Classes will continue until
June 25. Registration forms are in the Narthex and
can be left in the office when completed. If you have
questions or need more information please contact Fr.
Eliacin.
VBS SCHEDULE SAVE THE DATES: July 17-20 for children ages 4-10.
INTERESTED IN BECOMING AN
ACOLYTE? Hey tweens and teens and parents, have you ever con-
sidered joining the acolyte team? We are looking for a
few kids to commit to this very important part of our
services. Ideally, there would be three acolytes partic-
ipating in each service. Fr. Eliacin will be hosting a
training session soon. There will be donuts! For those
who complete training and serve regularly will be rec-
ognized with gifts and bi-annual fun activity party.
Please contact Fleur Romagosa at 360-450-5530 or at

NOTES FROM THE MUSIC ROOM April brings us to the end of the Lenten season, the
drama of Passion Sunday and Holy Week, and the
grand celebration of the Resurrection. Bi-lingual ser-
vices are planned for the Triduum (The Three Days) on
Maundy Thursday at 7 PM, Good Friday at noon and 7
PM, and the Great Vigil of Easter on the 15th at 8 PM.
Come worship with us.
The Ensemble, will return to St. Luke’s – San Lucas on
April 7th, the Friday before Passion Sunday, with two
very different passion settings from 1593 and 2007. The
Pulitzer Prize-winning Little Match Girl Passion, com-
posed by David Lang, sets Hans Christian Andersen's
story in a format that is reminiscent of Bach's Saint
Matthew Passion. Four singers accompany themselves on
percussion instruments in this 21st-century master-
piece. Leonhard Lechner's Passion, interspersed with
chorales from the Saint Matthew Passion, will com-
plete the program. Half-price tickets are always availa-
ble for members of our parish community when re-
served in advance.
The Jazz Vespers series re-
turns on April 8th with special
guest flautist Cheryl Alex.
Mike Horsfall will be perform-
ing in Europe in early April
but will be back with us in
June. Fr. Dennis Cole will pre-
side and our Handbell Ringers
will offer their version of
“Ring dem Bells” by Duke El-
lington. Invite family, friends, and neighbors to this
alternative worship experience. Music begins at 6 PM.
We will have to wait still a little longer for our new
trumpet stop to arrive for the Adams organ. The pipes
are at the Bond Organ Company workshop in Portland
and will be installed shortly after Easter. Organist Dr.
Paul Tegels from Pacific Lutheran University in Taco-
ma will rededicate the instrument. Look for more de-
tails soon.

A PALM BY ANY OTHER NAME This year we celebrate Palm Sunday, as we typically
do, with palm fronds and palm leaves woven into
small crosses. The palm fronds are shipped into Van-
couver Washington from places at the Equator that are
able to grow palms. In our natural world in the Pacific
Northwest, palm trees are not normally able to grow.
Yes, you may find a few palm trees, but not enough for
all the churches on Palm Sunday.
So, back in 1860, at St. Luke’s, how did they get palm
fronds? Shipping from the Equatorial Zone would
have been prohibitive in cost. What would they do in-
stead? Well, remember our church was made up of
immigrants from Ireland, England, Germany, and
many other countries of the Northern Hemisphere.
When they were growing up in those distant locations,
they had winters as harsh, or harsher than ours.
The solution, one that had been around from at least
the Eighth Century, was to use locally grown tree
branches, such as yews, firs, willows and other ever-
greens. Palm Sunday was also called “Yew Sunday”,
“Willow Sunday”, and the general term, “Branch Sun-
day”.
In twelfth-century England, yew trees were planted on
church grounds, where the ancient idea of the soul’s
immortality was represented by the evergreen yew
tree. In addition to being used in Palm Sunday proces-
sions, the parish would gather around the church’s
yew tree to celebrate the New Year.
Traditions varied by culture, but the branches were
brought into church in the procession, distributed to
those in attendance, and taken home to be enjoyed
through the remainder of the winter. We don’t know
which types of trees were used at St. Luke’s in 1860,
but we can be certain that they felt as deeply about
their “Branch Sunday” experience as you do today.

Administrative & Financial TREASURER’S REPORT BUDGET SUMMARY
“Dollars and Sense”
At the end of February percentages should to be at 16.7% of
budgeted revenue and expense.
Summary as of February 28, 2017
Revenues: Actual revenues for February ahead of
where we would expect them to be at this time in
the year, which is a very good thing.
Expenses: Expenses are right where we would ex-
pect them to be at the end of February, which is also
a very good thing.
Additional Comments:
We are right where we want to be financially. The posi-
tive balance is mostly due to staff positions that have
been posted and budgeted for, yet remain unfilled at
present.
We currently have 123 pledging units! Congratulations
and thanks to everyone who has made a pledge. For
those who have not done so yet, we welcome pledge
commitments anytime during the year.
If you have not picked up your envelopes and you still
want them, please see Jamie Mathieu, Janet Butler, or
Doug Goodlett and a set will be provided.
Remember that donations can be made from our web-
site. It’s easy to do so try it out.
Thanks for your continued financial support of St.
Luke’s ~ San Lucas.

St. Luke’s – San Lucas is a bilingual Episcopal Church serving Vancouver and Southwest Washington since 1853.
Our vision is to answer God’s call to be an Anglo-Hispanic faith community that works together to share the love of
Christ. With the guidance of the Holy Spirit, our mission is to extend hospitality to all, to respond to human need
through service, and to grow in faith together.
