January/February 2014

Volume 13, Number 1 THE MESSENGER

The light that has come into the

world, that we follow in the season after

the Epiphany, leads us forward into

new life, new ministries, new ways of

being. In the month of January, your

Finance Committee and Vestry

assessed our year in 2013 and found

Christ Church Cathedral to be in good

health. Our plans for 2014 are exciting,

holding the promise of stepping

forward into a new chapter of ministry

in our life together and of continued

growth into the people God calls us to

be.

The pastoral care ministries that

have been designed and populated over

that past several months now have

leaders and are organized and underway

in the new year. Vestry leadership

transitions take place in January, and

your newly constituted Vestry begins in

February to organize its work for the

year ahead.

One important part of that work

will be identifying the areas of ministry

where the Cathedral is being challenged

to grow, as a part of our ongoing

visioning process. This work of

discernment will inform us as we look

forward to calling a new “Canon,”

someone to assist me in my work here

and to partner with us all in our shared

ministry.

Another vital piece of work that lies

ahead will involve a transition in

leadership for our music ministry. As

you may have heard, and as you will

see in this Messenger, Peggy Lyden has

accepted a call from St. Paul’s, Mobile

to serve as their Organist/Choirmaster.

We give thanks for her wonderful work

here since 2001, growing a vibrant

ministry that glorifies God in this place

and enriches the lives of all who

worship at Christ Church. She will be

missed, and we will say our fond good-

bye to her at the end of May. In the

meantime, we will move forward with a

search to find the next person God has

in mind to lead the musical life of the

Cathedral into its next chapter.

On a diocesan level, the search and

transition committees charged with the

nomination, election and consecration

of the fourth Bishop of the Diocese of

the Central Gulf Coast have begun their

work. Provost Carolyn Jeffers is serving

as the chair of the transition committee,

while I am serving on the search

committee. There is a great deal of

work involved in this process, but it is a

joyful and exciting task about which

you will be hearing much in the months

ahead. You will be asked to participate

in a survey and in focus group meetings

that will be used to determine the state

and vision of the diocese and to

formulate a profile to be used in

searching for the right person to be our

next bishop.

For all of these things, I give thanks

to God, and I ask your prayers. We find

ourselves with many opportunities

before us, and we need to approach

them with prayer, with hope, with

energy, and with grateful hearts.

Annual Repor t o n the Cathedral

The Cathedral is the spiritual center of

the Diocese of the Central Gulf Coast.

The Cathedral is a dynamic and

evolving church that serves as a

liturgical, educational, and pastoral

center for Diocesan life. It serves as a

visible symbol of unity and promotes

growth, hope, and a deepening trust in

the Lord. The Cathedral is a place

where the Gospel of Jesus Christ will

be faithfully preached and responded

to, and it will model new concepts and

ideas for education, evangelism, and

outreach to which the Gospel calls us.

~Cathedral Mission Statement

This year we celebrated the ninth

anniversary of Christ Church, Mobile

being named the cathedral of the

Diocese of the Central Gulf Coast. We

continue to grow into our mission.

It has been a year of transitions at the

Cathedral. The Very Reverend Johnny

Walter Cook, first Dean of the

Cathedral, early in the year announced

his intention to retire. The vestry

began a time of discernment which

culminated in the election of The

Reverend Canon Beverly Findley

Gibson being named as second Dean.

There was a celebration of the ministry

of Dean Cook on Sunday, August 25.

As a gift of in recognition of his

service, Dean Cook was given a gold

seal ring engraved with the Cathedral

seal.

The Institution and Induction of The

Very Reverend Beverly Findley

Gibson as twenty-third rector and

Installation as Second Dean of Christ

Church Cathedral was held on

Saturday, October 12. Bishop Duncan

was the Celebrant and The Very

Reverend Kurt Hughes Dunkle, Dean

and President of General Theological

Seminary was the preacher. The

Diocesan gifts presented during the

service were: the Constitution and

Canons presented by The Reverend

John H. Riggin, St. Paul’s, Mobile and

The Reverend Christiana Olsen, St.

Francis of Assisi, Gulf Breeze, a silver

pectoral cross designed around the

Christ Church fire cross, and the water

were presented by The Right Reverend

Philip M. Duncan, II. Deacon

Raymond D. Wishart, St. Andrew’s,

Panama City was Deacon of the Table.

Alabama Chancellor M. Kathleen

Miller, St. Paul’s, Mobile, was a lay

reader and David R. Quittmeyer,

Standing Committee, Trinity, Mobile,

was the Litanist. A reception was held

in the garden for all in attendance.

Earlier in the day, Bishop Duncan

hosted a breakfast honoring Dean

Dunkle for all area graduates of The

General Theological Seminary.

In the summer The Right Reverend

Philip M. Duncan, II Called for

Orderly Transition for the election of

the fourth Bishop of the Diocese of the

Central Gulf Coast. As a part of our

diocesan leadership, Dean Gibson will

serve on the Bishop’s Nomination

Committee and Provost Carolyn

Jeffers will serve as Chair of the

Bishop’s Transition Committee. The

work of the committees will begin in

early 2014.

Bishop Duncan served as celebrant at

Christ Church Cathedral on Ash

Wednesday, Easter Sunday and

Christmas Eve and during the Eighth

Annual Cathedral Celebration on

Sunday, April 28. Bishop Duncan and

Kathy continue to enjoy being in

residence in their apartment at Christ

Church Cathedral throughout the year.

Organist/choirmaster Peggy Lyden

attended the church musicians

conference at the University of the

South in Sewanee, Tennessee in July

where she served as a presenter. Dean

Gibson participated in the Anglican/

Dear Christ Church Cathedral Family,

It is my intention to accept a call from St. Paul’s Episcopal Church,

Mobile, as Organist and Choir Director. My service as Organist and

Choir Director at the Cathedral since April of 2001 has been truly one of

the greatest joys of my life. I intend to begin this new position on June 1,

2014, but I am glad to work with the Cathedral to accommodate a date

which will accommodate both parties.

With much love,

Dear Christ Church Cathedral,

As we reflect back on the many blessing of the past year, our Threads of Hope

congregation! We want you to know how much we appreciate your support and

effort over the past several years. We look forward to the future. We are

At the Standing Committee

meeting on July 30, Bishop

Duncan called to begin the process

to search for a new bishop for our

diocese. Bishop Duncan said, “As

the third Bishop of the Diocese of

the Central Gulf Coast, I have been

blessed in this journey with you. It

is a privilege and a joy to serve as

your bishop in this part of “The

Vineyard.” As the beginning

process for the election of the

fourth Bishop of the Diocese of the

Central Gulf Coast, the date for the

Consecration has been set for

Saturday, July 25, 2015, when The

Most Reverend Katharine Jefferts

Schori will be with us to ordain my

successor; I in turn will hand over

the Diocesan Crosier to my

successor and our fourth bishop.

As I begin my retirement, I will

have been ordained 45 years. In

December of 2014, I will celebrate

my 70th birthday and it seems

right to me, while I am still healthy

and have Kathy’s support, to

exercise Episcopal ministry in a

different way, as we begin this

new phase of our life and ministry

together.”

As a result of Bishop Duncan’s

announcement, the members of the

Standing Committee met with The

Right Rev. F. Clayton Matthews of

the Office of Pastoral

Development of the Episcopal

Church. Bishop Clayton outlined

the steps involved in the election

and ordination of a bishop. The

process generally takes 18 months.

Following that meeting, the

Standing Committee planned a

timetable for the transition and

began accepting nominations for

members of both the Search

Committee and the Transition

Committee. Tim Gaston, Chair of

the Standing Committee

commented on the process by

saying, “The Standing Committee

is committed to conducting a

thorough, thoughtful, and prayerful

search, including ways by which

you, the clergy and faithful laity of

our diocese can participate. You

will be kept informed about the

process. On behalf of the Standing

Committee, I ask your prayers for

the Diocese as we move forward in

seeking our next bishop.” He

added, “We are grateful for Bishop

Duncan’s service to the Diocese,

his support during this transition

and his commitment to continue

his ministry with us as our bishop

until the consecration of our fourth

Bishop to the Diocese of the

Central Gulf Coast.

The members of both the

Search and Transition Committees

have been named. On Friday,

January 17, they met at St.

Christopher’s Episcopal Church in

Pensacola to begin working with

Lynn Schmissrauter, our election

process consultant. The Search

Committee met on January 18 and

they have begun their search

Please contact the Cathedral Office to let us know if you would like to keep the names

of Friends and Family you have submitted on the prayer list. We will keep everyone

who has been submitted within the last month and all others from whom we hear.

O God, the strength of the weak and the comfort of sufferers: Mercifully accept our prayers, and grant to your servants the help of your power, that their sickness may be turned into health, and our sorrow into joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Thank you to our December volunteers: Lynn Davis, Beth Deaton, Kathrine Deaton, Bill Drew, Sam Power

15 Place has moved into their new facility at 279 North Washington Avenue along with the Waterfront

Rescue Mission. William “Bill” Bru, Rescue Mission Executive Director, says of the move, “The reason we

are moving is that we will have a purpose-built facility that will enable us to serve our clients in a better way.

The consideration of 15 Place and putting both agencies together adds tremendous efficiencies and eliminates

duplication of services. It’s a win-win, any way you look at it.”

For the near-future, as the agency determines how best to use volunteers, Christ Church Cathedral volunteers

will not be serving lunch. We would like to thank Sam Power and all of those who have volunteered through

the years for their commitment to this Outreach Ministry. Loaves and Fish has been an important part of our

Cathedral Outreach since around 2005. Sam will let us know the new ways in which we can help.

Just like the rest of us, the United States Postal Service is looking for ways to save money. Beginning January

26, all bulk mailing will have to have a unique bar code for each piece of mail. Customers will have to do

more of the Postal Service’s work to continue to take full advantage of bulk mail discounts. To do this we

must update our programs. While the process will, in the long run save us time and money, it is taking a little

time and money to get up to date. So, this month to mail The Messenger, we are using first class postage.

Hopefully, by next month, we will be updated and up to speed on how to print the new labels. The best news

of this upgrade will be that your addresses will be automatically be updated from postal service updates.

Why Did I Receive My Messenger By Regular Mai l?
