Pastoral Reflections
In his service to God Isaiah met with resistance from shortsighted kings and people alike. Israel sought security in earthly resources; they neglected to put trust in the God of Israel. Their choices led to the collapse of the kingdom. But the experience of exile in a foreign land gave rise to a wiser Israel. The illusion of self-reliance was replaced with something more substantial and more beneficial for all.
Today is the solemnity of the nativity of John the Baptist and the Gospel passage focuses directly on that event. The birth itself is stated without any details. More time is spent describing the circumcision and naming of this newborn child. And finally the response of the neighbors is given. They are not sure what to make of this child or what he was destined to become.
The birth of John the Baptist. Luke offers only a bare-bones statement indicating that Elizabeth gave birth to a son. Previous to this Zechariah was visited by the archangel Gabriel who announced that this was going to happen even though Elizabeth was elderly and barren (Lk 1:5-25). This is the fulfillment of that prophesy and the neighbors all rejoice with Elizabeth.
Circumcision and naming of the child. Eight days after the birth of this child he is presented for circumcision and at this time he will receive his name. Circumcision
officially incorporates John the Baptist into the people of Israel. He is now part of the covenant people. Ordinarily he would have received the name of his grandfather, or on occasion the father's name is given to a newborn child. Elizabeth is the one who first declares that this child will be named “John.” This was previously mandated by the angel Gabriel, but he told it only to Zechariah (Lk 1:13). Nevertheless, this name totally shocks everyone who heard it. Zechariah himself is then consulted and he confirms what Elizabeth had declared, “John is his name.” It is quite clear from what has already taken place that this child's ultimate mission will be anything but normal.
The neighbor's response. Zechariah recovers his voice which was taken from him by the archangel Gabriel. His first words express blessings on God. The neighbors, on the other hand, experience the kind of fear that emerges from being in the presence divine mystery. From annunciation to birth the events surrounding John the Baptist have been extraordinary. Who is this child and what is he destined to become? He was born to pious faithful Jews who were just ordinary folks. But obviously out of the ordinary is going to emerge the extraordinary. In the meantime, he will be in the desert growing strong in spirit.

Some Christians in Rome within a decade or
more, after the death of Jesus, were not yet
the converts of the Apostle Paul who had
not yet visited them at the time he wrote his
great letter in 57-58 A.D. There was a large
Jewish population in Rome; probably as a result of controver-
sy between Jews and Jewish Christians, the Emperor Claudius
expelled all Jews from Rome in 49-50 A.D. Paul’s letter was
addressed to a Church with members from Jewish and Gentile
backgrounds. In July of 64 A.D., more than half of Rome was
destroyed by fire. Rumor blamed the tragedy on Nero, who
wanted to enlarge his palace. He shifted the blame by accus-
ing the Christians. According to the historian Tacitus, many
Christians were put to death because of their “hatred of the
human race.” Peter and Paul were probably among the vic-
tims. Threatened by an army of revolt and condemned to
death by the senate, Nero committed suicide in 68, A.D. at
the age of 31. Wherever the Good News of Jesus was preached,
it met the same opposition as did Jesus, and many of those
who began to follow him shared his suffering and death. But
no human force could stop the power of the Spirit unleashed
upon the world. The blood of martyrs has always been and
always will be, the seed of Christians. Feast Day: June 30th
In the pressing crowd. God is not far off! God acts in the pressing crowd, the commotion of life. God rescues us at birth and in the new baptismal birth, when afflicted, and when near death. Jesus said to Jairus and says to us today: Do not be afraid; just have faith.

Men’s Club
Some of you may not be aware, but all the men of
Sacred Heart Parish are members of the Men’s Club.
The Men’s club currently is in need of some reorgan-
ization, and Father would like to meet with the men
of the parish to get things headed in that direction.
That meeting is scheduled for Wed July 11th at 6:30 pm in the
church hall. All men, please plan to attend this meeting and
help get the men’s club reorganized!

This weekend, June 23/24 we will have a missionary priest from Kenya visiting us at both Sacred Heart and St Michael’s. He will celebrate masses as well as share with us about his mission. He will be providing envelopes which may be returned the following weekend when we will have a second collection for this purpose.
