OLQP MISSION STATEMENT

Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church is dedicated to witness-ing the teachings of Jesus Christ, especially the Gospel of Saint Matthew, Chapter 25:31-46. Our mission is to nurture the spirit and to encourage the potential of those we serve through liturgi-cal celebration, educational endeavors and social ministries. The parish will continue to identify with its origin as a Black parish. As a multi-ethnic congregation we will seek to promote racial har-mony and social justice. While our primary focus is within the immediate community, we will also work to provide for the well-being of the downtrodden everywhere. In this we strive for our parish community to be a caring, sharing, and loving family.

MEDOR’S SANITATION PROGRAM - In 1997, there was no clean water or sanitation program in Medor. OLQP introduced a way to purify water with Klorfasil bleach powder and to build la-trines with arbor-loos. When household surveys were conducted early this year, of the nearly 600 households who received the 5-gallon Klorfasil bucket systems in 2016, almost all were treating their water. And 183 families have built a type of family com-posting latrine called an arbor-loo. We were delighted to learn that, although cholera is active in Medor, there have been no cas-es of cholera in the participants in the Klorfasil program or among the school children. Check out Dr. Sue's blog on Medor at marysusancarlson.tumblr.com

Please continue to pray for our sisters and brothers in Haiti.

CAN YOU VOLUNTEER TWO HOURS A WEEK as an English as a Second Language teacher? REEP, a part of Arlington Pub-lic Schools, is recruiting teachers for their free, drop-in ESL classes for adults at community centers in Arlington. No prior ESL experi-ence is required, but teaching experience is helpful. By sharing their everyday knowledge, volunteers make a profound difference, helping immigrants from all cultures and backgrounds gain the tools to thrive in a new country. If you are interested in receiving free training to teach in morning or evening classes, please contact REEP Volunteer Coordinator Amanda Rayborn at [email protected] or OLQP parishioner Elizabeth Hilla (a REEP volunteer) at [email protected].

Just a thought...or two…

Today we celebrate the feast of John the Baptist…a strange and wild biblical figure who “outs” Jesus as the

“Messiah”…”the long awaited one” whose sandal straps he is not worthy to untie. While we see John as the

herald of Jesus there are many contrasts between them...scripture scholar Albert Nolan argues that differ-

ence; "Conversion, for John the Baptist, meant fasting and doing penance. For Jesus it was more like ac-

cepting an invitation to a feast, or discovering a treasure or priceless pearl for which one happily sacrificed

everything else. For John, forgiveness was a future possibility, dependent on baptism; Jesus preached for-

giveness was a present reality, and baptism in the Jordan was no longer necessary. Conversion is a radical

reorientation of one's life. It declares a life of no compromise and no half-measures." What I find so inter-

esting is that scripture is clear that while in prison John sends two of his disciples to ask Jesus who he really

is…through their encounter they come to believe and become disciples of Jesus. But it seems, according to

scripture, that John never makes the final leap himself to become a disciple of Jesus. Some scholars have ar-

gued that John's "pre-understanding" of the Messiah prevented him from making the final leap of faith and

becoming a disciple of Jesus. Perhaps then John the Baptist can be seen as “the patron saint of seekers”…

perhaps he can be an example for those of us who are still "on the Way", still seeking answers, still asking

questions, continuing the search, hoping for the grace of enlightening and the enlightenment of “Grace.”

Who is Jesus for me? How does being a disciple of Jesus impact the way I live my daily life? Am I open to

“Grace”? Am I still seeking...or have I settled?

With all that has come to light and contin-

ues to come to light about the dreadful and inhu-

mane treatment of the immigrants -- babies, tod-

dlers, children, young adults, adults and families

crossing into the US -- let us continue to keep

them in our prayers, let us continue to put pres-

sure on Congress and the President to make com-

passionate and meaningful immigration legisla-

tion reform. Let us keep pressure on our political

leaders to act in the right and just manner to reu-

nite separated families and end these family’s

nightmares! This is our Christian duty to our im-

migrant and migrant sisters and brothers. Let us

not let them down; let us not turn away in

shame. Rather, let us be emboldened by the Holy

Spirit to stand up, to stand together and to stand

with them in their time of suffering! Please visit

www.justiceforimmagrants.org, a website sponsored by the US Conference of Catholic Bishops for infor-

mation on how you can get involved and how you stay informed on this humanitarian crisis. Other websites

such as the Media Center at Catholic Charities USA have information as well on what is being done and how

you can help. How I choose to, or choose not to, respond to this humanitarian crisis is at its core a matter of

living out my discipleship…it is nothing less than responding to Jesus’ words; “I was a stranger and you wel-

comed me”! Blessing, Fr. Tim
