DECLARACIÓN DE MISIÓN DE OLQP La parroquia de la iglesia católica Nuestra Señora Reina de la Paz se dedica a dar testimonio de las enseñanzas de Jesucristo, especialmente el Evan-gelio de San Mateo, Capítulo 25:21-46. Nuestra misión es nutrir el espíritu y alentar el potencial de aquellos a quienes servimos a través de la cele-bración litúrgica, labores educativas y ministerios sociales. La parroquia continuará identificándose con su origen como una comunidad afro-americana, pero reflejando una congregación multi-étnica y continuará promoviendo la armonía racial y la justicia social. Si bien es cierto que nuestro enfoque principal es la vecindad comunitaria, con-tinuaremos trabajando para proveer por el bienes-tar de los más necesitados en general. OLQP MISSION STATEMENT Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church is dedi-cated to witnessing the teachings of Jesus Christ, especially the Gospel of Saint Matthew, Chapter 25:31-46. Our mission is to nurture the spirit and to encourage the potential of those we serve through liturgical celebration, educational endeavors and social ministries. The parish will continue to identi-fy with its origin as a Black parish. As a multi-ethnic congregation we will seek to promote racial har-mony and social justice. While our primary focus is within the immediate community, we will also work to provide for the well-being of the down-trodden everywhere. In this we strive for our par-ish community to be a caring, sharing, and loving family.

Public Celebration of Masses at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church New Temporary Mass Schedule Starts with the Weekend of June 13-14, 2020

YOU MUST SIGNUP IN ADVANCE TO ATTEND A SUNDAY PUBLIC MASS

Sign up now – Monday 6/1 thru Thursday 6/4 – to attend a June Mass Mass assignment is random; you cannot choose a time, day, date or your seat. By signing up you are saying you would like to attend Mass that month. For June Masses, the office will email/call on June 5 with your Mass assignment. If there is more inter-est than number of people we can accommodate or if you are unable to attend on the date assigned, your signup will go toward the next month. Signup will be offered once a month. (Signup for July will be open June 29-July 2.)

OLQP’s maximum number of people allowed in church for the public celebration of Mass is 50. Public Mass in Spanish will be offered on the 1st, 3rd and 5th Sundays of the month at 2pm. (Live-streamed, closed Masses with Fr. Joe Nangle presiding, will be offered on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month at 2pm. Assignments will not be made for Masses with Fr. Joe.)

You must remain in your assigned seat throughout Mass. After the Final Blessing, please follow the Porter’s instructions for leaving. Do not gather outdoors or in the parking lot.

All the faithful of the Diocese of Arlington are dispensed from the obligation to attend Mass on Sundays and holy days of obliga-tion.

Face Coverings · You MUST wear a cloth face covering or disposable face mask. Please bring your own. Parishes may have a l imited supply designated for those in true need, not for general distribution.

Hand Hygiene · You are expected to disinfect your hands when entering the church and encouraged to do so again immediately before receiving Communion. Please bring your own hand sanitizer, which should contain at least 60% alcohol.

PRAYER FOR A PANDEMIC May we, who are merely inconvenienced, remember those whose lives are at stake. May we, who have no risk factors, remember those most vulnerable. May we, who have the luxury of working from home, remember those who must choose between preserving their own health, or work for the health of others. May we, who have the flexibility to care for our children when their schools close, remember those who do not have that option. May we, who have to cancel our trips, remember those who cannot afford to travel and have no safe place to go. May we, who are losing our margin money in the tumult of the economic market, remember those who have no margin at all. May we, who settle in for a quarantine at home, remember those who have no home. As fear grips our country, let us choose common sense. La asignación de Misas es al azar; no puede elegir la hora, el día, la fecha o su asiento. Al inscribirse, está reconociendo que le gustaría

asistir a Misa ese mes. Para las Misas de junio, la oficina enviará un correo electrónico / llamará el 5 de junio con su asignación de Misa.

Una comunidad católica con una ética consistente con la vida

YOUTH MINISTRY -- Current 9th-12th graders, join us for the

Diocese Work Camp 2020 Reboot! June 21st -25th. We will be

doing service projects on the OLQP campus, as well as helping out

our parishioners in need of minor outside home repairs and yard

work, as social distancing permits. At-home service projects will be

utilized, if necessary. Evening programming provided by the Dio-

cese. Registration fee is $30, which includes t-shirts and program

materials (assistance provided, as needed). Adult Virtus-trained

volunteers needed as well – group leaders, musicians, and session

MAY 31 IS MOTHER’S DAY IN HAITI

We join our Medor family in celebrating the mothers in the com-munity. Thank you, Mothers of Medor, for all you do for your chil-dren and for others. You continue to inspire us.

MEDOR CELEBRATES EARTH MONTH ALL YEAR LONG

On this last weekend of Earth Month we celebrate our Medor fam-

ily’s care for the planet. Since 2010 they have planted 743,700

trees on family plots and on the mountainsides. They use solar

power in the church, parish clinic, library, computer lab, convent

and rectory. Their diet is mostly plant based and they use very little

plastic, or fossil fuel. Thank you to the people of Medor for helping

to green our world.

INTEGRITY of CREATION Ministry Team offers a prayer of

thanksgiving to everyone who helped make our parish celebration of EARTH MONTH and the CELEBRATION EVENT of LAUDATO SI’ so wonderful. Deep gratitude to the parish staff and our amazing clergy for their support, cooperation and participation throughout the month-long observance and for the virtual celebration event held on May 24.

GABRIEL PROJECT is not currently open for regular distribution

of baby items, but we are still distributing diapers and wipes to

mothers who come for food. We're in dire need of size 4, 5 and 6

diapers. If you can contribute, your donation will be greatly appre-

WEAR ORANGE WEEKEND STARTS FRIDAY, JUNE 5TH

June 5-7 we honor and remember those shot and killed or wound-ed by gun violence, and hold their families and friends in pray-er. This year, on Wear Orange Weekend, we have an opportunity to renew our Christian commitment to human life and to act to-ward ending gun violence by wearing orange and taking part in many virtual events. To find a virtual event in which to participate, please visit: wearorange.org Wear Orange Day is formally known as National Gun Violence Awareness Day. It’s scheduled on the first Friday in June each year to coincide with the June 2 birthday of Hadiya Pendleton. Hadiya was a 15-year-old girl shot and killed by gun violence in Chicago in 2013, shortly after she participated in the first Inauguration Day parade of President Barack Obama. After her death, Hadiya’s friends and family started wearing orange, her favorite color, to honor her and the thousands of other people affected by gun vio-lence every day in our country.

MINISTERIO PARA ADOLESCENTES – ¡Estudiantes que actualmen-te están en los grados 9-12, únanse a nosotros para el Reinicio del Dio-cese Work Camp 2020 del 21 al 25 de junio! Vamos a hacer proyectos de servicio en el campus de OLQP, como también ayudar a nuestros feligreses necesitados de pequeños arreglos por fuera de las casas y de ayuda en el jardín, si el distanciamiento social lo permite. De ser necesa-rio, realizarán proyectos en sus propias casas. La diócesis ofrecerá pro-gramas por la noche. Nos unimos a nuestra familia de Medor para celebrar a las madres de la comunidad. Gracias, Madres de Medor, por todo lo que hacen por sus hijos y por los demás. Usteds siguen inspirándonos.

MEDOR CELEBRA EL MES DE LA TIERRA DURANTE TODO EL AÑO - Este último fin de semana del Mes de la Tierra celebramos el cuidado que nuestra familia de Medor le da al planeta. Desde el año 2010 han sembrado 743,700 árboles en parcelas de familias y en las laderas de las montañas. Usan energía solar en la iglesia, la clínica de la parroquia, la biblioteca, el laboratorio de computadoras, el convento y la rectoría. Mayormente siguen una dieta con base vegetal y no usan muchos plásticos ni combustible fósil. Les damos las gracias a las perso-nas de Medor porque ayudan a que nuestro mundo sea “verde”.

EL GRUPO DEL MINISTERIO DE INTEGRIDAD DE LA CREACIÓN ofrece una oración de gracias a todas las personas que ayudaron a que nuestra celebración parroquial del MES DE LA TIERRA y de la CELEBRA-CIÓN DEL EVENTO LAUDATO SI’ fueran maravillosas. FIN DE SEMANA PARA VESTIRSE CON ALGO DE COLOR NA-RANJA EMPIEZA EL VIERNES, 5 DE JUNIO - En junio, del 5 al 7, honramos y recordamos a aquellas personas heridas o asesinadas por violencia con armas de fuego y oramos por sus familias y amistades. Este año, el fin de semana Wear Orange Weekend, tenemos la oportunidad de renovar nuestro compromiso cristiano a la vida humana y a actuar para eliminar la violencia con armas de fuego al vestirnos con algo na-ranja y al participar en muchos eventos virtuales. JUST A THOUGHT OR TWO… Happy Pentecost to all of you,

sometimes called the birthday of the church! Happy 75th Anniversary to Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish Commu-nity! and thanksgiving for those original 16 brave and Spirit-filled Black Catholic founders who dreamed of a parish where they could worship in truth and dignity! And Happy Birthday to the Spiritan Community who along with those first 16 Black Catholics helped found this parish. The Spiritans were founded on Pentecost Sunday in 1703 and so it is no coinci-dence that Fr Joseph Hackett chose that the first Mass was held on Pentecost Sunday in 1945 at the home of Lawrence and Jessie But-ler. And from that small Spirit-filled group of Black Catholics, Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Parish was born and today we cele-brate our 75th anniversary! Congratulations to all of you, our current parishioners and to all of those who came before us who have all opened themselves to be led by the Spirit and join together as a family of faith and live our discipleship of Jesus Christ by living out Jesus’ clarion call to love one another as I have loved you. And we are able to do that because we are filled with the Holy Spirit! St. Augustine said that the Spirit blows where the Spirit wills…not exactly comforting if you are someone who likes things neat and orderly or if you prefer to have life all figured out and neatly pack-aged. Most of us would prefer to see life’s decisions as right or wrong, good or bad…as if everything in life were black and white. The problem with life is that most of the time we are living in the grey, everything is not black and white! This is where the Holy Spirit offers counsel, the challenge is to be open to The Spirit’s coun-sel! The Holy Spirit blows where it wills and inspires and guides whomever it chooses, whenever and wherever S/he chooses. Most of us get use to a particular routine and we find comfort in doing things in a particular way and we find discomfort when our routine gets changed by outside influences or when we are forced to do things in a different or new way. It is no different in the church, we all get comfortable in the way we worship, in the way we pray, in the way we sing, in what we sing, and then when change comes we

suddenly are set off center and we feel “off balance” at the change or new ways. We are experiencing it right now, this is different, this is not the normal way we “gather” to celebrate Eucharist. I am sure that many in the church today see the Pope’s challenge to live a radically gospel centered life as a change from what they were used to. In answering the Gospel’s call, Pope Francis has called us out of the church buildings and into the streets to be a “field hospi-tal” where binding up the wounds of the poor and brokenhearted is a priority. The Pope is following the call of Christ, who calls us to be a welcoming presence to immigrants and refugees, to seek out the lost and forsaken and to “be” the word of peace in the presence of war, to “be” the word of love spoken to the lonely and marginalized of the world, to “be” the word of justice and equality spoken in the midst of injustice, racism and exclusion. What word of justice and equality do we speak in the face of the horrific, brutal killing of George Floyd by a white police officer? And just weeks before, the shooting of another unarmed black man, the shooting of Ahmaud Arbery by two white vigilantes. What words do we speak and what actions do we take? President Obama wrote on Friday “This should not be normal in 2020 America. It can’t be nor-mal. If we want our children to grow up in a nation that lives up to its highest ideals, we can and must do better”… “but it falls on all of us, regardless of our race or station – including the majority of men and women in law enforcement who take pride in doing their tough job the right way, every day – to work together to create a “new normal” in which the legacy of bigotry and unequal treatment no longer infects our institutions or our hearts”! As well, we are called to be part of the solution, in our local commu-nity, nationally and internationally. While all of this can all seem overwhelming, we need to remember that we are not called to do all this by ourselves but rather it is in and through the powerful pres-ence of the Holy Spirit within us and around us that we are able to do all good things! As we celebrate the great feast of Pentecost let each of us ask ourselves to where and to what is the Holy Spirit call-ing me in my life? Easter Blessings, Fr Tim

George Floyd Deserved to Breathe Free

I can’t breathe.

These were George Floyd’s desperate cries for help as he gasped for breath and clung to life due to the sense-less brutality of four police officers in Minneapolis, one of whom, Derek Chauvin, had his knee and weight crushing Floyd’s neck.

I’m having a hard time breathing today. I have been fighting back tears of anguish and righteous indignation all night and day since I first watched the graphic and gruesome video of Floyd’s murder, which has now gone viral and is grabbing headlines. I can’t breathe today because for 9 long minutes, 540 excruciating seconds, George Floyd and a number of bystanders literally begged for his life while officers ignored them and treated his life as though it didn’t count or even matter.

Floyd’s brutal death brings back chilling flashbacks to Eric Garner, who was also suffocated by police officers in New York City due to an illegal chokehold. George’s death feels like too much, adding insult to injury as the black community deals with the trauma of losing such a disproportionate number of loved ones due to COVID-19 and now has to see what feel like almost daily re-minders of our dehumanization.

As a father of two black sons, I can’t breathe today be-cause I refuse to accept a law enforcement system that so often treats black bodies as being presumed guilty or an immediate danger. Will George Floyd’s death finally be a tipping point in public consciousness and outrage that has been so elusive, when enough of us demand police accountability and declare definitely that black lives matter?

But a tipping point requires allies. It requires that we all speak out and take action in courageous and tangible ways. Otherwise, there will likely not be justice for George Floyd and his family and we will squander this moral imperative to prevent and ultimately end these senseless and brutal deaths.

I can’t breathe today because none of us should feel able to breathe fully or easily in our nation until all of us are able to breathe free from the evils of racism and police brutality.

who handed down their violence to us.

Can we be different?

We cannot fathom wholeness

because, maybe, we don’t really want it.

Teach us to want it.

Can we want it?

with broken bones and unhealed wounds

and people screaming in the streets

for air.

We are trying not to give up on each other.

We need to remember our way home.

Help us name and honor those who are killed in our streets.

Help us name our white supremacy.

Pentecost Sunday, known around the world as "the birthday of the church"

is also "the birthday" of our parish community!

And, so it was no coincidence on Pentecost Sunday May 20, 1945—75 Years Ago This Weekend!

— Father Joe Hackett, CSSp., the first pastor of Our Lady Queen of Peace, and a group of devote

and determined Black Catholics — Joseph Bowman , Clarence and Selena Brown, Alice But-

ler, Lawrence and Jessie Butler, Irma Carter, Hattie Ellis, Mary Fernanders, Edward

Marshall, Grace Mcgwinn, Edward and Alice Moorman, Constance Spencer Lautier,

Sophia Terry, Thaddenia West — celebrated the first Mass of the parish in the home of Law-

rence and Jessie Butler. The Spiritans (the Congregation of the Holy Spirit) were also founded on

Pentecost Sunday in 1703 in Paris, France.

The Spiritans have a rich history of serving the poor and marginalized. In the early 1750's they jour-

neyed to North America to work with the Micmac Indians living in what was later to become the

North East United States. Beginning in the 1840s on the islands of Haiti, Mauritius and Reunion and

later in the United States, the Spiritans dedicated themselves to working with newly freed slaves

and immigrant populations. In East Africa they began work in the 1860s by rescuing men, women

and children out of slavery in Zanzibar. They opened schools and hospitals, taught people marketa-

ble skills, and gave property to those who needed it.

The Spiritans are credited with pioneering modern missionary activity in Africa and ultimately sent

more missionaries there than any other religious institute in the Catholic Church. In many countries

the Spiritans were invited by the local Catholic bishops to minister to Catholics in remote areas

where they had difficulty getting other priests to minister. Today the Spiritans number about 3,000

priests, brothers and lay associates and work in some 62 countries around the globe.

As we celebrate Pentecost Sunday and our parish's 75th anniversary, as a Spiritan parish we also

celebrate the Spiritans' 317th anniversary!

Today’s special second collection honors and celebrates the work of the Spiritans.

Prayer to the Holy Spirit

Spirit of wisdom and understanding,

enlighten our minds to perceive the mysteries of the universe

in relation to eternity.

Spirit of right judgment and courage,

guide us and make us firm in our baptismal decision

to follow Jesus' way of love.

Spirit of knowledge and reverence,

help us to see the lasting value of justice and mercy

in our everyday dealings with one another.

May we respect life

as we work to solve problems of family and nation,

economy and ecology.

Spirit of God,

spark our faith, hope and love into new action each day.

Dear Parishioners,

It seems like years since we have been together. I miss

you all so much! I know you get to see me on

livestreaming Masses, but I don’t get to see all of you!!

We expect the Governor will soon allow Northern Virgin-

ia to move into phase 1 of “opening up” and cancel the

“stay at home order”. We will not immediately open the

church and begin having public Masses; this is consistent

with what many parishes did last weekend in “opened”

parts of the Commonwealth.

It takes a well-developed plan and a lot of work to reo-

pen in the midst of a pandemic. Once we hear from the

Governor, we expect that it will take two weeks to open

and be safely ready to welcome people back into a pro-

fessionally disinfected church and celebrate Eucharist

together.

Today’s bulletin includes documents (pages 12 &13)

from the Arlington Diocese to help you ready yourselves

for a gradual return to celebrating Eucharist togeth-

er. Abiding by the social distancing regulations we will

only be able to fit 50 people in the church maintaining a

6-foot distance between each person in all direc-

tions. Families will be able to sit together and not social

distance from one another. You all must be aware that

there is an inherent risk in gathering in any large group in

the midst of a pandemic, so please use your best judg-

ment.

We will begin having Communion Services next Thursday

after the daily streamed Noon Masses. People will gather

in groups of 9 people, while social distancing, in front of

the church on the round gathering space. We will have

an usher to guide groups and assist in maintaining social

distancing. Everyone will be required to wear a mask or

face covering. Each Communion Service will last about

10 minutes. After the service has ended, we ask that

people not gather, but rather return to their cars while

maintaining social distancing. When one service has end-

ed, then the next group of 9 people will be escorted to

the front of the church for their Communion Service.

Parece que han pasado años desde que hemos estado jun-

tos. ¡Los extraño mucho a todos ustedes! ¡Sé que me

pueden ver en Misas de transmisión en vivo, pero no pue-

do verlos a todos!

Esperamos que el Gobernador permita pronto que el norte

de Virginia pase a la fase 1 de "apertura" y cancele la

Those Who Are Vulnerable • If you or those for

whom you care are "vulnerable" to infection or

the serious effects of coronavirus, please avoid

gatherings of the general public.

Those who are "vulnerable"

• are over the age of 65,

• have existing heart or lung conditions,

• have diabetes, &/or

• are otherwise immuno-compromised.

Those Who Feel Sick • If you feel sick in any way,

are coughing, or are sneezing frequently, please

avoid public gatherings, including liturgical cele-

brations.

Livestreamed Masses • Parishes will continue to

livestream Masses as they are able. If you are

vulnerable, sick, or concerned with your safety

or the safety of those whom you regularly en-

counter, please continue to unite prayerfully to

the Mass via livestream.

In-Person Participation • Your parish will co-

ordinate in-person participation for the Mass

& other liturgies. Each parish has different

capabilities. Please be charitable & under-

standing with your pastor & parish staff.

Person-Per-Gathering Limits • The Diocese re-

quires every parish to follow person-per-

gathering limits set by public health authorities,

which may vary by locality. Contact your parish

for details on in-person participation.

If the number of participants exceeds the limit,

the priest or a minister will have to ask individu-

als to leave. Please avoid putting our beloved

priests & ministers in this unfortunate position.

Above all, exercise charity!

Social Distancing • The Diocese requires every

parish to ensure social distancing with due re-

spect for the reverent enactment of the sacred

rites. Kindly follow the directions of ministers, as

well as posted signs & markings.

Disinfection & Ventilation • The Diocese re-

quires every parish to ensure disinfection &

ventilation before & after each liturgy. The

church may be closed briefly, if necessary.

Please follow the directions of your parish.

Holy Water & Hymnals • The Diocese requires

every parish to remove holy water from all

fonts & hymnals/missalettes from pews.

Porters • For each liturgy, parishes are encour-

aged to assign at least one "porter" -a minister

who keeps watch at the doors. Porters ensure

that capacity limitations & related safety prac-

tices are observed. This ministry is especially

challenging at this time. Please be patient, un-

derstanding, & kind in following the directions

of all ministers.

Making Plans · During this time and due to ca-

pacity limits, please do not plan to attend

liturgies at any parish at which you are not

registered.

Face Coverings · You are expected to wear a

cloth face covering or disposable face mask.

Please bring your own. Parishes may have a

limited supply designated for those in true

need, not for general distribution.

Hand Hygiene · You are expected to disinfect

your hands when entering the church &

encouraged to do so again immediately

before receiving Communion. Please bring

your own hand sanitizer, which should

contain at least 60% alcohol.

Processions · Ministers will maintain social dis-

tancing during processions. Please also remain

six feet from ministers in procession.

Presentation of the Gifts · The Diocese requires

that the presentation of gifts by members of the

assembly be omitted.

Collection · A collection may take place. Please be

attentive to the directions of your parish. If availa-

ble, please consider supporting your parish

through online giving.

Lord’s Prayer · The Diocese prohibits holding

hands during the Lord’s Prayer.

Sign of Peace · The Diocese requires that the invita-

tion “Let us offer each other the sign of peace” &

the exchange of peace that follows be omitted.

Communion

• The Diocese suppresses the distribution of the Pre-

cious Blood until further notice.

• Only priests, deacons, & instituted acolytes distrib-

ute Communion.

• All present who are in a state of grace may receive

Communion. Those who have health concerns are

not obliged.

• Please follow the procedures of your parish for the

distribution of Communion.

• Please maintain social distancing in the

Communion Procession.

• You are encouraged to disinfect your hands imme-

diately before receiving Communion.

• You retain the right to decide how to receive,

whether on the tongue or in the hand. Please

prayerfully consider temporarily receiving reverently

in the hand.*

• It is not permitted to receive Communion in

the hand while wearing gloves. If you are

wearing gloves and will receive Communion

in the hand, please remove your gloves for

the reception of Communion.

• Ministers are encouraged to disinfect their hands

immediately after each & every communicant

who receives on the tongue, even if no physical

contact has occurred.

• Ministers are also encouraged to disinfect

their hands immediately if accidental contact

is made with a communicant’s hand.

Personas vulnerables · Si usted o las personas a su

OLQP DAILY AND WEEKEND MASSES!!

Bishop Burbidge has made the decision to suspend all

public Masses in the diocese so the church will be closed

this weekend. Fr. Tim, Fr. Martin and Fr. Joe will be live-

streaming several Masses on Sunday.

Login to the parish facebook page for live-streaming at

9:30am, 11:15am and 1pm (in Spanish) on Sunday. If you

do not have a facebook account search for Our Lady

Queen of Peace Virginia Facebook. From the home page,

click on "posts" (see list of options along the left side). If

you want to view the Mass at a later time, follow the

same steps to get to the OLQP Facebook page, and then

click on "videos" from the list at the left. Choose the vid-

eo you would like to view.

Monday – Saturday — 11am – 2pm &

5pm – 8pm

With public celebrations of the Sunday Mass canceled, the

faithful are encouraged to devote time to prayer. We are

observing social distancing along with state and federal

guidelines of no more than 10 people in a gathering place

at any one time. With that, we are asking those who

come for prayer to self-monitor. If there are more than

10 people in the church, please wait until someone leaves

before you enter.

CLOSING OLQP BUILDINGS TO THE PUBLIC

With the decision to suspend all ministry and group activi-

ty, and Bishop Burbidge’s decision to suspend all public

Masses, all OLQP buildings (with the exception of those

listed below) are to remain locked until the decision is

made to lift the suspension.

All OLQP buildings are locked and closed to the

public with the following EXCEPTIONS:
