From the Pastor / Notas del Párroco
Dear St. Nicholas Family, If you remember early in 2016 – before my time here – the listening sessions about parish needs for the future surfaced a desire for an additional Mass in Spanish. Other issues were discussed as a continued effort to implement the goals of the project called Parish Transformation. That pastoral evaluation, needs assessment and planning process remains an effective guideline to discern parish ministries and initiatives. Ideas like new parishioner engagement (the step beyond welcoming), focus on Youth Ministry with its array of programs and activities, attentiveness to injustices near and distant (the now formed Pastoral Migratoria group for immigrant accompaniment), green team, adult faith formation, etc. have steadily been implemented during my nearly two years here. I am most grateful to have a framework to guide the work of the staff and Parish Pastoral Council plus the essential supporting bodies like the Building Committee and Finance Council. I have a sense that what seems like chaos some days actually retains an- inherent order! (Not unlike Chicago weather – there is a technical and meteorlogical Springtime, but we still have snow events and 80 degree temps within a few weeks of each other.) The pilot 9:00am Mass in Spanish was completed near Easter time about two years ago for an evaluation. The post-pilot evaluation resulted in the decision to permanently include the 9:00 am Mass in Spanish as part of our Sunday celebrations. That was just the beginning of a pastoral reality requiring much attention and integration which continues until today. A number of liturgical ministers from the 1:00pm Mass volunteered to serve at the then new 9:00 am Mass in the Chapel. Since that time we knew that additional minsters were needed and the search led to many people who had not previously served in ministry or were newly attracted to the 9:00am Mass who had previously been attending Mass at another parish nearby and were now finding a home at St. Nick’s. Additional training of lectors, Extraordinary Ministers of Communion, ushers, choirs, servers and children’s Liturgy of the Word have been ongoing. During the first year, we realized that a fuller formation for adults in ministry was needed, as it had been a number of years since parishioners had attended the two year ministry formation known as the Instituto De Liderazgo Pastoral(ILP) – the Institute for Pastoral Leadership – offered by the Archdiocese of Chicago. un esfuerzo continuo para implementar los objetivos del proyecto llamado Transformación Parroquial. La evaluación pastoral, la evaluación de necesidades y el proceso de planificación siguen siendo una guía efectiva para discernir los ministerios e iniciativas parroquiales. Ideas como nuevos compromisos parroquiales (el paso más allá de la bienvenida), enfoque en el Ministerio Juvenil con su variedad de programas y actividades, atención a las injusticias cercanas y lejanas (el ahora formado Grupo Pastoral Migratoria para el acompañamiento de inmigrantes), equipo verde, formación de fe para adultos, etc. han sido implementados constantemente durante mis casi dos años aquí. Lorenzo, attends Mass here frequently and has helped us recruit new students for the program. I am happy to announce that the nine men and women who began the intensive program of formation and academic studies last August have now completed their first year of the two year program!! Their names are:
I, along with Deacon Jaime and Leonor Rojas (who are now celebrating one year of Ordination to the Deaconate!) have been blessed to accompany them on their journey to deepen their relationship with Christ and the Church as well as learn the tools and skills required for ministerial leadership in our community. I am so proud of them as I have witnessed tremendous spiritual growth and a new enthusiasm for ministry. Most of them have not taken classes in many years and their perseverance is humbling as they have struggled with homework. This Summer they will have an opportunity to participate in other ministries. Let us congratulate them and encourage them to continue for the Second Year of ministerial preparation. We are also hoping a few additional parishioners will begin in September for the first year. We plan to maintain our commitment to the formation of liturgical minsters to serve the needs of our community. Thanks to the generosity of you all we are able to support our new ministries: Lay Leadership Formation, Youth Ministry and Couples Ministry. May the Holy Spirit guide you as we approach the grand celebration of Pentecost.

The following help is needed for each of the dates below. 4-5 people to help prepare the food starting at 12:30 on Sunday, May 13, in the Oldershaw Hall kitchen. One person to help transport the food at 9:00 am Monday from Oldershaw Hall to Second Baptist Church 8-10 people to help serve the food starting at 11:00 am on Monday at Second Baptist

Our parish was blessed to receive $1,036,561 in pledges during the To Teach Who Christ Is campaign and to raise 97% of our goal. These pledges mean that the parish is planning the projects identified in the case statement over the coming months for 60% of this amount, $621,937. Thank you for your generous pledges and faithful payments! As you may know, St. Nicholas receives its share of campaign funds as pledges are paid. As of April 30, 2018 funds totaling $371,195 have been paid and $220,558 returned to us. As more pledges are fulfilled, we will be able to plan and execute the next projects. The Building Committee and the Finance Council are making recommendations to Father Tito.
