To celebrate the arrival of our Magna Carta anniversary exhibition in September 2015 Braintree District Museum has developed a new education package focusing on The Middle Ages. Suitable for KS1 and KS2, this fully interactive day will help pupils learn about the history of north Essex in the Middle Ages; discover Baron Robert de Vere’s rebellion against King John; explore medieval archaeology with a hands-on ’replica dig’; and give pupils the chance to have a go at calligraphy or take part in an Arthurian tales workshop. Guided Gallery Visit of the Magna Carta exhibition
Length: 1 hour
Complete the schools’ trail worksheet, have a go at all the
interactives, discover what Braintree District was like in the 13th
Century and be enthralled by the story of the baron of Hedingham
Castle, Robert de Vere’s, rebellion against King John.
Workshop 1—Medieval Archaeology
Length: 1 hour
Following an introduction to medieval archaeology and the chance
to learn about medieval artefacts that have been found locally,
pupils will get the chance to do their own archaeology ‘dig’. They will
be shown how to record the finds that they uncover and be asked to
‘think like an archaeologist’ as they examine their object and work
out what it is.
Workshop Details
Please then choose one of the following workshops to complete your
experience
Workshop 2—Medieval Calligraphy
Length: 1 hour
Pupils will discover the history of writing in the medieval period,
and get the chance to have a go at the art of medieval calligraphy.
This session will be led by a Fellow of the Calligraphy and Lettering
Arts Society and includes a free calligraphy felt pen for pupils to
take away.
Workshop 3— Arhurian Tales
Length: 1 hour

Curriculum Links—Key Stage 1
HISTORY— This program will assist pupils with identifying an awareness of the past and identify
similarities and differences between ways of life in different periods. Through the Magna Carta exhibition
it will engage them with a significant historical event and the lives of significant individual who have
contributed to national and international achievements.
ART— Pupils will be learning about how medieval calligraphy functioned as art as well as a way of
conveying words, and will get the chance to have a go at the technique themselves.
ENGLISH—The Arthurian Tales workshop will contribute to pupils’ spoken word skills and their
understanding of the history of words.
Curriculum Links—Key Stage 2
HISTORY—This package will contribute to extending pupils’ historical knowledge beyond 1066 and to
studying local history.
ART— Pupils will be learning about how medieval calligraphy functioned as art as well as a way of
conveying words, and will get the chance to have a go at the technique themselves.
ENGLISH—The Arthurian Tales workshop will contribute to pupils’ spoken word skills and their
understanding of the history of words.
