Golf Tip of the Month

With Christmas just weeks away, what have you planned to get your golfer this year? Could you be thinking new clubs, shoes, a nifty sweater? For those of you that have been especially nice, what about a golf vacation?

What golfer would not like a trip to southern California to play winter golf? Temperatures in the high 70’s, world-class golf courses and direct flights make a combination hard to resist.

How do you put it all together? There are travel companies the focus strictly on golf vacations. (Search the internet to pick one that fits your desired location and proposed itinerary.) They can offer

packages, book tee times, or create a personalized golf experience. And, best of all, you can compare options from the comfort of your own couch.

Not enough in the gift budget for travel? Here is a suggestion that is sure to be a hit with any golfer – a dozen golf balls.

neighborhoodNews

What every golfer wants for christmas.

Nothing will create a smile faster than picking up a wrapped gift that has just that right size, weight and sound. (People still shake Christmas presents don’t they?)

There are many types of golf balls. OK, most of them are white, but the compari-son ends at the color. If you do not know which to pick, consult with the golf shop professional. Prices and performance vary greatly. The important thing is to get a ball that fits your golfer’s game.

So be it extravagant or practical, do not forget your golfer when spreading holiday cheer this season.

ever wish that you could have a professional massage on a regular basis to unwind from a stressful day at work or running after the little ones? Maybe even having one on a weekly basis for pain, but are afraid of racking up enormous fees at the spa? Today, more and more people turn to massage therapy not just to relieve stress but also to heal aches and pains, including symptoms associated with arthritis and fibromyalgia; so the demand for affordable, accessible massage therapy has become greater than ever before. That fact is one of the reasons that has made Mas-sage envy one of the fasted growing franchises in the nation, as well as their commit-ment to giving excellent service for healing their clients at prices they can afford.

DISCLAIMER: The business reviewed in this sec-tion provided products and/or services free of charge in exchange for this review.

Massage Envy is not trying to be a spa, but it does have a relaxing and serene environment and offers low-cost plans that make multiple massages in a month very reasonable. A membership includes

memberships at all locations nationwide, which now is up to 700 locations in 43 states. A client can use his or her “prepaid” massages at any nationwide clinic or pay the membership rate in that particular

state. The regional member rate is $39 per hour or $57 per 90 minutes. The regional monthly dues are only $59, which includes a 1-hour massage. All additional massages are at the member rates.

So, how does Massage Envy measure up to residents who have had many other professional massage therapy treatments in the past? We asked Mill Creek resi-dents and entrepreneurs to try The Mill Creek Massage Envy for the first time and give us some honest feedback.

I am 5 1/2 months pregnant and my prenatal massage at Massage Envy was just fabulous! I was not quite sure what to expect with a prenatal massage, but this massage was just what I needed with all of the aches that I am starting experi-ence. The staff was so welcoming and made me feel comfortable and completely relaxed from the time I walked in until the time my massage was complete. I look for-ward to my next prenatal massage at Mas-sage Envy! Valerie Gautreaux (Brighton)

The atmosphere at Massage Envy was soothing the minute you walked in the door. The warm compress (bag of rice LOL) on the back of my neck

instantly relaxed me. All the staff there was very friendly and welcoming.

The massage rooms were perfectly heated, lit and had great soothing music play-ing- my hour went by quickly as Kenedy worked on relieving my stress areas as well as giving an all over stress massage- I truly felt that my needs had been addressed. Galinda Porter (River Crossing)

Although all of our participants may enjoy going to full service spas every once in awhile and indulging themselves, they all found the value and professional mas-sage techniques displayed by the staff at The Mill Creek Massage Envy worthy of referring to other residents as well. For those who need frequent massages due to injuries and residents who travel a lot for work can also take advantage of the nationwide membership plan.

i-FLY Seattle Indoor Skydiving ReviewPhotography by Chelsi Greenwood Photography and i-Fly

A small collection of MC neighbors and entrepreneurs gathered at Tukwila based i-Fly a couple weeks ago to share a first in a lifetime experience, to

fly. All of us being first time fliers, we were all excited, nervous, laughing, dressed up in skydiving gear, helmets and goggles and prepared for our first flight. As we entered the tallest wind tunnel in the world based here in Washington, we were all anticipating the freedom and thrill we would experience when we stepped in. Our experienced instructor gently guided us individually while the

group sat in a row observing the flights. The sound of the high-pressured fan was so loud, combined with the ear plugs stuffed in our ears, that it was impossible to hear one another; but we were all able to communicate easily with the smiles and laughter. Inside the tunnel our professional flying instructor, John E Olson, guided us with the help of a trained wind specialist adjusting the speed and pressure of the wind while sitting in a technical booth that resem-bled an air traffic control booth.  Each flyer stepped in and suddenly started to float while trying to remember the hand signals and body positions to control our

positions during the flight since we were secured by handles on our flight suits our instructor used to guide our bodies. As I looked up I imagined the floating scene in Willy Wonka and as he spun me around I laughed so hard I could feel my saliva whipping against my cheeks…I was in pure delight.  i-Fly is a professional flying tunnel and fast becoming one of the hottest new sports. Military Special Forces train at the center daily and many of the biggest corporations plan team-building events to bring unity and fearlessness to their businesses. It’s also a great experience for families to come together and experience flying as a family unit. The flight was actually 25% longer than the actual free fall of a true sky dive mak-ing it essential for anyone willing to try actual skydiving out of an airplane. An amazing time was had by all as you can read through the following testimonials.

i-Fly Seattle was such an amazing experi-ence; I can’t wait to do it again. I have always wanted to experience the feeling of flying but didn’t want to actually be forced to jump out of a perfectly good airplane to the possibility of what could

happen if my parachute malfunctioned. The staff was fun, friendly and profes-sional. They were excited to share the experience with others. I have a few dif-ferent events that I am hoping to plan with this company and am excited about the possibility of learning some of the stunts we got to witness. I was smiling ear to ear and giggling like a kid on a swing for the first time. It was so fun to share with friends and I would definitely rec-ommend i-Fly Seattle to others. Tracey Prader – The Jet Bar & Grill

I totally enjoyed our session at i-Fly. I was a little nervous at first; but after the short coaching session I felt confi-dent. The staff was extremely friendly. I always enjoy finding something new to do with my family. We love to experi-ence exciting things and i-Fly definitely fits the bill. It's a great outing for kids. It would also be a fun place to have a party. I had a total blast. I highly recommended i-Fly to my friends and have made reser-vations to take my family back. Pastor Larry Ehoff; Co-Pastor - Gold Creek Community Church

My i-Fly Seattle experience was great! The staff there was very professional and friend-ly and did a terrific job of getting us the

information we needed before flight time as well as help to ease any nervous feeling we had... the only complaint I have is that my next flight couldn't come soon enough! -Greg Percy Jr. – Hearthside and Home

I loved i-Fly Seattle!  What a great expe-rience as an adult to get to feel a bit like a kid again! I think we all laughed so hard that our smiles felt stuck to our faces. It was almost as much fun watching the others members of my group fly as the thrill of flying myself; it was exhilarat-ing! I plan on arranging 2 parties in the very near future, one for my son's birth-day, and one for my adult friends. It was too much fun to not go again. Thank you i-Fly Seattle, I was buzzing on the inside all day. Dawn Torres - Resident

Thanks so much Ell and Lysa for giving all of us a wonderful experience, we will all be back! To book your own flight, call or schedule online today! Be sure and mention that you saw this in The Mill Creek Influence Magazine!

She flies through the air with the greatest of ease,

the only thing missing is the flying trapeze.

Dreams of flying come true for a group of Mill Creek residents!

ReviewReviewed by Lisa Ware and edited by Lindsay Ware

restaurant17121 Bothell Way Northeast | Bothell, WA 98011 | (425) 408-1306 | www.preservationkitchen.com

The Preservation Kitchen is a quaint and elegant restaurant located in the 1916 Kaysner Estate in historic downtown Bothell. It has lovely grounds that lead you up to the main entrance, which is both warm and inviting, with a beautiful full service bar.

Upon arriving at the restaurant, we were greeted by a very friendly and profession-al staff, who seated us in the main dining room, which I believe was the former liv-ing room of this lovely home. Seated by the fire, we enjoyed a glass of wine while perusing the interesting menu.

DISCLAIMER: The business reviewed in this sec-tion provided products and/or services free of charge in exchange for this review.

For our review we were presented with a special menu and tried a variety of Chef Jason Northern’s specialties. For our appetizer we had a shrimp mousseline, which was both flavorful and delicious. Following the appetizer, we tried sev-eral unique salads such as Greens and Bacon (yum!), and my favorite, Beets and Ricotta.

Next, for my main course, I ordered the Wild Boar Ragu. Some of the other reviewers tried dishes such as Airline Chicken and Pork with Peas and Carrots. When the dishes arrived at our table, I

was impressed by the artistic presentation, and the taste did not disappoint as well! The Wild Boar Ragu offered me a new definition of “comfort food”. The flavors were both rich and delicious. All five of us at the review very much enjoyed our main courses, and graciously offered each other tastes of our different choices.

Chef Jason Northern came out to our table during dinner to share some of his stories with us. He told us about his methods for collecting only the finest organic ingredi-ents for his recipes, including the greens for our salads that were fresh picked that morning. Chef Jason was very warm and friendly, and after our meal he graced us with a visit to his kitchen!

For dessert we had our choice of either a flourless chocolate cake (served with a

tiny glass of milk on the plate), or a warm bread pudding. Between the five of us we had a fair share of both of these deli-cious treats. I am usually only interested in chocolate for dessert, but I must say, the bread pudding gave it a run for its money! It was covered in nuts, and was the best bread pudding I have ever eaten. Suffice to say, they were well worth the extra calories!

We visited The Preservation Kitchen on a Wednesday night and the following Friday was a second visit for me when I took my husband there for our weekly date night. Although we live in Mill Creek and usually dine close to home, we have found a new restaurant to add to our favorites, and it is well worth the 20-min-ute drive. I would recommend to all my friends that they try this gem!

SPIder VeINS treAtMeNtThey’re quite the nuisance, aren’t they? Leg and facial spider veins are bothersome at best, unattractive at worst. Fortunately, with cosmetic laser spider vein removal, you can make yourself look and feel a whole lot better - often times with as little as only one or two visits.

HOW dOeS LASer SPIder VeINS treAtMeNt WOrk?The 1064-nm Nd: YAG laser pierces the skin and penetrates the superficial blood vessels. The heat generated from the laser coagulates the blood inside the vessels causing them to collapse and seal. Over the next few weeks, the vessels will disappear and all of the blood will be removed by the body’s scavenging cells. Our laser treatments deliver a precise dosage of energy to each blood vessel without injuring any nearby structures.

Benefits of Laser Spider Veins Treatment vs. Sclerotherapy

. More Effective

. Fewer Side Effects

. No Needles or Incisions

. Faster Treatment Sessions

HOW MANY treAtMeNtS Are reqUIred?Typically only one or two treatments are required and results can be seen in 3–4 weeks. Treatment time usually varies between 10 and 20 minutes, depending on the size of the area treated.

WHAt cAUSeS SPIder VeINS?Red veins, blue veins or purple spider veins on the leg and face can be a result of sun exposure, use of oral contraception, hor-mone therapy, age or genetics.

SPIder VeINS VS. VArIcOSe VeINSSpider veins are smaller and closer to the surface of the skin than varicose veins. They are often red or blue in color and look like a tree branch or spider web with their short jagged lines. Spider veins can be found on both the legs and the face. They can cover either a very small or very large area of skin.

MOre qUeStIONS ON SPIder VeINS LASer treAtMeNt?You can schedule a free consultation with us first. When you come in, we will walk you through the spider vein removal pro-cess and answer any other questions.

REST SToP..Mattress City, a different kind of Mattress store…By Stewart Patey/Owner Mattress City

We spend a third of our lives sleeping. Yet more than 70% of us are still sleep-deprived. With the demands of a 24-hour society, where overtime hours, late-night web-surfing and all-night gyms are the norm today, it’s important to know that this hurts us more than we think. Sleep is the best predictor of longev-ity and nutrition and exercise are extremely important; but you need all three to be psychologically and physically healthy. The lack of sleep doesn’t just leave us feeling drowsy, moody and unproductive, it raises our risk of hypertension, heart attack and stroke, type 2 diabetes, periodontal disease, weight gain, depres-sion, skin problems, even cancer.

How does the number of hours we sleep affect longevity? There’s some research that shows those who sleep less than

seven or more than nine hours have a higher [death] rate than people getting about eight hours of sleep each night. In general, people who get adequate sleep will live significantly longer than those getting less. How do we know if we’re getting enough sleep? If you’re fully alert all day with no midday dip, you’re doing fine. But most people aren’t.

Aside from drowsiness, how can someone tell if she's sleep-deprived? Other symptoms include mood swings, irritabil-ity, anxiety and difficulty concentrating and remembering. In chronic cases, sleep deprivation causes frequent infections or illnesses, blurred vision, depression and changes in appetite.

Most of us think of sleep as a luxury. It’s actually a necessity. At Mattress City we take the time necessary to find the cor-rect support and comfort for you. Everyone’s different in this department! It’s not a one size fits all environment. Asking the right questions to each of our customers helps us tailor the fit so to speak. Being one of the only Non-commissioned mattress stores in the State helps us focus on YOU and your particular needs. We don’t have the agenda of rushing the process to try and get to the next person. We really care about finding the right mattress that you’ll LOVE!

As a family owned and operated local mattress store, we pride our-selves on making each of our customers experience one that you’ll appreciate and remember. It’s hard today to find stores that are PASSIONATE about not only what they do, but how they serve others. When it’s time to purchase a new mattress set for your master bedroom, guest room, or you just need a new set for your children, we hope you’ll allow us to have the opportunity to do just that.

From our family to yours, we hope you have the best Holiday Season. Stop by our store today to see many specials available to you our Mill Creek friends. If nothing else, come introduce your-self and just say hi to Julie & I. Until next time, Sleep well…

Located at 121 SE Everett Mall Way, 1 block west of Target. Find us on the web at www.mattress-city.com. You can also visit our facebook page and click “LIKE” and then next time you stop into our store please pick up a FREE $50 City Rewards Card. Go to www.facebook.com/mattresscity

Getting the recommended 7-9 hours of nightly sleep can make us thinner, happier and live longer. So why don’t most of us get enough? Here’s how to spot and stop – sleep deprivation…

keratin complex Services

Lovers of sleek and glossy hair sing PRAISES! Keratin Complex straightening will make your mane tame and frizz free for six weeks.  The salon-based treatment (some-times called Brazilian Keratin) coasts strands, smoothes frayed cuticles, and leaves hair shinier. "It will change your life", says Jaime DeRoss, lead stylist at Spa in the City, Everett.  Best of all, unlike other straighteners, it will NOT damage fragile, color-treated hair.  To maintain results, use the keratin products designed to maintain and care for all your styling needs.

What are people saying about Keratin Services?Vanessa, featured in these photos, was AMAZED at how wonderfully manageable her hair was after the services.  She stated, "I can still curl my hair and it is not limp or dead!  It has volume and bounce and is so Shiny!

Tara who has had the services done multiple times raves,

“I honestly do not know what I would do without this hair service!”What is keratin? This is a popular question asked by so many people. Keratin is a natural protein and not a chemical like some of you might think. Keratin is found in our hair, nails and skin and every living crea-ture has it. Keratin is also known as protein, it creates an external layer that protects, smoothes and repairs your hair and skin.

How long does the service take?It really depends on your hair length and texture; but the aver-age time is one to two hours.

Keratin Complex treatment is the best in deep conditioners and restorative products on the market.  With any kind of new product, there are knock offs and other products that do not deliver. Only at Spa in the City can you get the best products and the best prices from women who love what they do and share their secrets with you.

Making allowancesGiving children allowances is a good way to begin teaching them how to save money and budget for the things they want. How much you give them depends in part on what you expect them to buy with it and how much you want them to save.

Some parents expect children to earn their allowance by doing household chores, while others attach no strings to the purse and expect children to pitch in simply because they live in the house-

hold. A compromise might be to give children small allowances coupled with opportunities to earn extra money by doing chores that fall outside their normal household responsibilities.

When it comes to giving children allowances:· Set parameters. Discuss with your children what they may use the money for and how much should be saved.·  Make allowance day a routine, like payday. Give the same amount on the same day each week.· Consider "raises" for children who manage money well.

Take it to the bankPiggy banks are a great way to start teaching children to save mon-ey; but opening a savings account in a "real" bank introduces them to the concepts of earning interest and the power of compounding.

While children might want to spend all their allowance now, encourage them (especially older children) to divide it up, allow-ing them to spend some immediately, while insisting they save some toward things they really want but can't afford right away. Writing down each goal and the amount that must be saved each week toward it will help children learn the difference between short-term and long-term goals. As an incentive, you might want to offer to match whatever children save toward their long-term goals.

Shopping senseTelevision commercials and peer pressure constantly tempt children to spend money. But children need guidance when it comes to making good buying decisions. Teach children how to compare items by price and quality. When you're at the grocery store, for example, explain why you might buy a generic cereal instead of a name brand.

By explaining that you won't buy them something every time you go to a store, you can lead children into thinking carefully about

the purchases they do want to make. Then, consider setting aside one day a month when you will take children shopping for them-selves. This encourages them to save for something they really want rather than buying on impulse. For "big-ticket" items, sug-gest that they might put the items on a birthday or holiday list.

Don't be afraid to let children make mistakes. If a toy breaks soon after it's purchased, or doesn't turn out to be as much fun as seen on TV, eventually children will learn to make good choices even when you're not there to give them advice.

Earning and handling incomeOlder children (especially teenagers) may earn income from part-time jobs after school or on weekends. Particularly if this money supplements any allowance you give them, wages enable children to get a greater taste of financial independence.

Earned income from part-time jobs might be subject to with-holdings for FICA and federal and/or state income taxes. Show your children how this takes a bite out their paychecks and reduces the amount they have left over for their own use.

Creating a balanced budgetWith greater financial independence should come greater fis-cal responsibility. Older children may have more expenses, and their extra income can be used to cover at least some of those expenses. To ensure that they'll have enough to make ends meet, help them prepare a budget.

To develop a balanced budget, children should first list all their income. Next, they should list routine expenses, such as pizza with friends, money for movies, and (for older children) gas for the car. (Don't include things you will pay for.) Finally, subtract the expenses from the income. If they'll be in the black, you can encour-age further saving or con-tributions to their favorite charity. If the results show that your children will

be in the red, however, you'll need to come up with a plan to address the shortfall.

To help children learn about budgeting:· Devise a system for keeping track of what's spent· Categorize expenses as needs (unavoidable) and wants (can be cut)· Suggest ways to increase income and/or reduce expenses

The future is nowTeenagers should be ready to focus on saving for larger goals (e.g., a new computer or a car) and longer-term goals (e.g., col-lege, an apartment). And while bank accounts may still be the primary savings vehicles for them, you might also want to con-sider introducing your teenagers to the principles of investing.

To do this, open investment accounts for them. (If they're minors, these must be custodial accounts.) Look for accounts that can be opened with low initial contributions at institutions that supply educational materials about basic investment terms and concepts.

Helping older children learn about topics such as risk tolerance, time horizons, market volatility, and asset diversification may predispose them to take charge of their financial future.

Teach Your Children Well: Basic Financial EducationEven before your children can count, they already know something about money: it's what you have to give the ice cream man to get a cone, or put in the slot to ride the rocket ship at the grocery store. So, as soon as your children begin to handle money, start teaching them how to handle it wisely.

Dear Dr. Dawn,

I'm a Mill Creek Housewife and I need to recharge my batter-ies. I feel tired, run down and overwhelmed with the holidays looming just around the corner. With your expertise, how can I have skin that glows, eyes that sparkle and energy that makes me feel sexy, beautiful and desirable?

Desperate Holiday Housewife, age 45

&Hi DHH,

Thank your for the question and helping to launch our new beauty section. Sparkle, shine and glow. We all want to look glamorous for the holidays but some of our holiday indulgences and higher stress can lead to increased cortisol levels that can break down proteins in the body and lead to a weaker immune system. Proteins are the building blocks of our body and skin. When they are broken down by stress it can lead to acne, rashes, sallow color, dark circles and loss of hydration. Not exactly the glam look we want for the holidays.

Here are my quick solutions to looking fabulous even under stress:

. Take time out just to unwind and reduce those cortisol levels, find your Chi.. Schedule a quick "lunch time" micro peel to revitalize and hydrate your skin.. Buy a cosmeceutical grade serum to feed the skin preferably one with peptides.

Happy HolidaysDr. Dawn Hunter, DC, LEDirector of Aesthetics at Radiant MedSpa, 425-640-5900, radiantmedspa.com

Herb Roasted Turkey

Ingredients:1 10-12 lb turkey1/4 Cup fresh herbs mix, minced (thyme, rosemary, sage, oregano and/or marjoram)20 whole herb sprigs (4-5 inches long)2 Tbsp. extra virgin olive oil1 tsp sea salt1 tsp freshly ground pepper1 1/2 Cup aromatics (onion, apple, lemon and/or orange), 2 inch pieces

basting:1 1/2 Tbsp. extra virgin olive oil2 sprigs of fresh herbs, chopped2 onions, cut into wedges2 carrots, 2 inch pieces

Instructions:Position rack in lower third of the oven; preheat to 400fRemove the giblets and neck from turkey cavity.

Wash the turkey, inside and out, with cold running water. Pat dry with paper towels.

Place the turkey, breast-side up, on a rack in a large roasting pan.

Mix minced herbs, oil, salt and pepper in a small bowl. Rub the herb mixture all over the turkey, under the skin, in the cavity and onto the breast meat. Place aromatics and 10 of the herb sprigs in the cavity. (6 rosemary, 4 thyme)

Tuck the wing tips under the turkey. Tie the legs together with butcher's twine. add 3 cups of water, the neck, carrots, onions and the remaining 10 herb sprigs to the pan.

Roast the turkey until the skin is golden brown. Lightly brush over the turkey. Roast for 1 hour, basting with the oil/herb mixture every 20 minutes. Reduce oven temp to 325f and continue roasting for 1 1/4 to 1 3/4 hours more.

If the pan dries out, tilt the turkey to let juices run out of the cavity into the pan and add 1 cup water. The turkey is done when the ther-mometer inserted into the thickest part of the thigh without touch-ing bone registers 165f.

Turn off the oven and allow the turkey to remain in the hot oven for 15 minutes.Carefully tilt the turkey to empty the juices from the cavity into the pan. Transfer the turkey to a warm serving platter and cover lightly with foil. Let the turkey rest for 10 minutes. Remove string and carve. garnish with fruit (oranges, apples) and herbs.

Meet rocco & Mia!

I would like to introduce you to Rocco, 2-years-old and Mia, 2 ½-years-old. They are both long-haired chihuahuas and are broth-er and sister but from different litters. We originally only wanted one dog, but when we saw pictures of both of them frolicking and playing together, it was too difficult to split them up. It definitely was a decision we have not regretted. They have added so much joy to our lives and are such a nice addition to the family (they don’t talk back), especially since we will soon be empty nesters.

We particularly enjoy watching them play together. They are no doubt best buds. Rocco likes to chew on his rawhide stick. It hangs out of the corner of mouth, looking like a cigar and then he decides to play chase and run all through the house. Our cigar dog! Rocco’s tricks are crossing his paws to say his prayers and sitting up on his hind legs. Mia does not have the energy level Rocco does. She is a lap dog and is perfectly content sit-ting on your lap all day if she could and giving kisses. For her trick she stands up on her hind legs and twirls. One of their cutest interactions is with my pet squirrel. He comes around every morning for peanuts usually after the dogs breakfast. The dogs sit by the back sliding door anticipating its arrival. Once the squirrel does arrive, it is cute to watch them try to interact, of course with the glass door between them. They can’t play outside with the squirrel because they could never catch it.

I would say they are very spoiled; what dogs aren’t. I think one of the best things we have done for them and ourselves is to have them on a tight schedule, which has been extremely ben-eficial with potty training and developing a stable temperament and disposition in their personalities. They sleep in their crate every night, snuggled together and love it. Then back to the usual daily routine of sleeping, playing and eating. What a life! I learn from them how to live in the moment, something that can too easily be forgotten with our busy schedules.

10,000 StepsOnly

Will Help You Lose Weight

Because it can seem to be a daunting task to walk 10,000 steps, it is important that you develop a strategy for meeting your daily quota. Here are three simple methods to help you reach your goals without losing focus:

Use a PedometerUsing a pedometer can help you easily keep track of the dis-tance you have covered throughout your day as well as the number of steps that you have taken. A pedometer is a small box-shaped calculator that you can clip to your belt.

The pedometer accurately registers each step that you take. For individuals wishing to meet their new daily quota of 10,000 steps, the pedometer is the easiest method to reach the goal.

Make sure that you select a pedometer model that has both dis-tance as well as individual step readings. You will learn how many steps go into one mile. You will also be surprised by how many steps you can add to your daily count by changing small habits, like choosing the stairs over the elevator or walking to your colleague’s desk rather than sending an email.

calculate the time it takesUsing either your pedometer or a counting method, calculate the approximate time it takes for you to traverse a specific distance, such as a mile. Calculate this number several times on several dif-ferent days and average the figures together. You will then be able to determine approximately how long it will take you to walk a portion of your steps if you choose to spend a set amount of time walking them off.

a Day

Experts have discovered that walking 10,000 steps a day can help you drop those unwanted pounds faster than just about any other method of weight loss. Walking will also help you keep the weight off for a longer period of time because it builds your muscles while keeping your heart at a fat-burning rate.

For example, if you know that you can walk all 10,000 steps in an hour, then you can elect to dedicate an hour everyday to walking your steps. However, if you cannot dedicate a full hour, then you can add up increments of ten min-utes at a time until you reach your goal. Do the calculations to save time and assure that you reach your 10,000 steps.

Measure a routeMeasure a route based on the time and distance it takes you to walk your 10,000 steps. Having a pre-planned route will help you measure your progress along your day and have a system for achieving your goals.

Because taking the same path everyday may become tedious, plan two or three routes. Plan a long route for days when you have a plethora of energy, a short route for days when you are tired, and a mid-length route for days when you are energized but busy. Giving yourself plenty of options is important to helping you stay positive so that you can achieve your goal.
