The miracle in question is Jesus turning water into wine. This can lead to all sorts of mental gymnastics by those who are embarrassed by the presence of miracles. They will quickly rationalize the story so that what really happened is that Jesus went out and purchased new wine, or that the people were so drunk they couldn’t tell they were drinking dirty water. Miracles are an old idea and for many not up with modern thought. GK Chesterton has a response for such people when he says “An imbecile habit has arisen in modern controversy of saying that such and such a creed can be held in one age but cannot be held in another. Some dogma, we are told, was credible in the twelfth century, but is not credible in the twentieth. You might as well say that a certain philosophy can be believed on Mondays, but cannot be believed on Tuesdays” The point is that Christians should not be embarrassed that we believe in the supernatural and that in a supernatural world miracles can happen. Chesterton continues saying What a man can believe depends upon his philosophy, not upon the clock or the century. If a man believes in unalterable natural law, he cannot believe in any miracle in any age. If a man believes in a will behind law, he can believe in any miracle in any age The Gospel this week gives testimony of a miracle and we believe it on faith. As Chesterton points out disbelief in miracles is a narrowly dogmatic conclusion of materialism. It is a lifeless verbal prejudice of which the original life and beginning was not in the freedom of thought, but simply in the dogma of materialism. The man of the nineteenth century did not disbelieve in the Resurrection because his liberal Christianity allowed him to doubt it. He disbelieved in it because his very strict materialism did not allow him to believe it. Christians are not strict materialists, our creed states I believe in one God the Father the almighty maker of heaven and earth … If God can make the heavens and the earth then water can be changed into wine. I believe Jesus changed the water into wine as the Gospel states. Fr. Andrew James Catechist Our children in government schools need someone to help them understand the basics of their faith and grow in their love for God and His Church. At present we have catechists in our infants school (Yeo Park) and primary school (Dulwich P.S.) and are hoping to provide a catechist at Dulwich High in the near future. We would like to have a group of people who would work together to support each other and our children on a regular basis one morning or afternoon a week. Training and resources will be provided.
