Hi everybody Isn’t this a great time of year when all the activities include end-of-year extras, like eating and drinking and “letting down of hair”. I look forward to the culmination of all this when we get together for the Christmas lunch at Gledswood on Friday, 14 th December. We will have had our group festivities but this will be our chance to gather together with all the members, including quite a few new members this year. We will be able to engage with people who we think might make good new executive members and ask them to accept nomination to various positions in our club. I believe we’ve had a very good group of people this year, but a refresh is always desirable and gives others a chance to influence direction. I will finish soon, but I’ll still be able to participate for another year as an ex- officio member of committee. I wish you all a very happy festive season and a great year ahead! CRAFT

- Mary Michel Where has the year gone, Christmas is only weeks away! This year we had 2 new members join our Craft group, making a total of 19 ladies. If there are any new members who would like to join, you are most welcome. It has been a great year for us. We have knitted over 250 teddies for Westmead Children’s Hospital and 36 teddies for Douglass Hanly Moir Pathology at Narellan. Other knitting included 80 cardigans, 60 hats and 48 octopus for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Liverpool Hospital, all of which was greatly appreciated. A big thank you to all the ladies who have helped this year. Our last Craft for 2018 will be on Tuesday, 4th December at 1.30 pm. Craft will resume in 2019 on Tuesday, 5th February.

We wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Mary

COFFEE

- Tony Wolf At 10 am on the 2nd Wednesday of the month in

Camden, and the 4th Wednesday in Narellan. Any queries give Tony a call – 0466 962 867.

“FUN” FRIDAY

- Ros Hodgins Our last meeting of Fun Friday for the year saw lots of laughs with Articulate and The Right Family Xmas Games. We then enjoyed a Feast of Pancakes where some people ate so much they had to get a “Doggy Bag”. I won’t mention their names because I told Jeanette and Edna that I wouldn’t. (If you would like to play The Right Family Game with friends and family, just Google Right/Left Xmas Game for lots of options.) We are having a meeting in January to select some new games for 2019, so any suggestions would be welcomed.

Have a wonderful Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year. Cheers Ros & David

BOOK CLUB

- Pat & Ray Cranfield

On 19th November we met for our last book review for the year, welcomed Malcolm back after his “holiday” in hospital and discussed our November book, “A Man Called Ove”. Most of us enjoyed it, but agreed it was quite different to our usual fare. Must be the Scandinavian way of writing. We look forward to meeting next year to discuss all the books we got for Christmas.

Love and best wishes from Pat & Ray Cranfield

TRAVEL TALES

- Kathy & Malcolm Smith

MERMERMERMERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEARRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEARRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEARRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR

Our group enjoyed a fabulous night for our last Travel Tales of the year. We feasted on pizza, garlic bread and enjoyed the drinks, and were then treated to a wonderful presentation of Denise and Gregg’s experiences in Canada. There were lots of ‘oohs and ahhs’ from the group as the photos were superb! Thank you, Denise and Gregg. Thank you, Ros, for organizing our Christmas function. It was most enjoyable. A special thank you, David, for all the work you do to make sure our shows are ready on time and helping us with your technical expertise. Travel Tales depends on people wanting to share their travel experiences. Thank you to all those who have shown photos throughout the year. Our audience who come along each month to enjoy the shared experiences also encourage others to share their photos too. See you at the Christmas Celebration on 14th December.

Kathy & Mal

ACTION REQUIRED NOW: Sue is presently preparing a presentation of the Sunshine Coast trip to show in the New Year. If you have any photos you would like to have included please send them to her via drop box or memory stick. Please check with her at the meeting if you have another way of sending photos. Thanks.

ITEM OF INTEREST

(Found by Pauline Downing while searching through the internet.) It’s interesting how we became to be: THE MUSHROOM The first Probus Club in the South Pacific was originated by Gordon Roatz at Kapiti Coast,- Paraparaumu north of Wellington in New Zealand in November, 1974. In the mid 1970's Rotarian Cliff Johnstone from Australia discovered Probus on a visit and began Probus at Hunter's Hill in Australia. These origins were so successful there are now 1900 clubs in Australia and New Zealand under the umbrella of the Probus Centre - South Pacific. Most other countries have followed the Australian example. The Netherlands has 300 clubs, Ireland 75, Belgium 60, South Africa 75 (including 7 Women's clubs). In India there are at least 20 clubs, in the U.S.A. there are approximately 12, Bermuda has 1, and others have started in Germany (1991, now 12 clubs), Chile, Cyprus, Portugal, Spain (1996), Trinidad, and Zimbabwe (3 clubs). Growth in Canada (since 1987) under the leadership of John Morris, has successfully developed 170 clubs across Canada from Saint John's Newfoundland to Victoria, British Columbia, with a membership of over 22,000 South Pacific.

FROM OUR ROVING REPORTERS:

(Thank you to our Roving Reporters and Photographers for this month. Linda)

“OF MICE AND MEN” AT CAMPBELLTOWN THEATRE – SATURDAY, 27TH OCTOBER

Many scenes and performances of this play remain with you long after leaving the theatre. The stage sets were amazing and created a perfect visual setting for the powerhouse performances by the actors, in particular Joshua Paterson as “George” and Brendan Flood as “Lennie”, two friends whose love and loyalty for each other does manage to survive, even to a bitter and tragic end. After shedding a tear during the final scene, it was time to leave the theatre and indulge in the “Flower Drum’s” Chinese Banquet organised by Joyce.

DAY TRIP – BLACKHEATH RHODODENDRONS – FRIDAY, 16TH NOVEMBER

With 41 passengers and Donna as our coach driver, we headed along the Northern Road giving us a look at the changes that have already taken place in preparation for the new airport. On our way towards the Blue Mountains, Donna informed us the facilities at the Memorial Park were not so good, so we continued on to the outskirts of Blackheath stopping at a lovely reserve for our morning tea. While enjoying our cuppa, we were treated to our first up close look at the beautiful full bloom Rhododendrons, with lots of photos being taken. We continued on to the Campbell Rhododendron Gardens where we walked along the pathways amongst the display of colours of these lovely flowers.

Twenty-eight of our members attended the Campbelltown Theatre Group’s production of John Steinbeck’s iconic story of human relationships “Of Mice and Men”, a tale of two itinerant workers searching for jobs in California during the Great Depression. The local cast of nine men and one woman delivered the most powerful performances of any play we have seen at Campbelltown to date.

A few energetic people walked the nature pathways, while the rest of us sat, talking of course and watching the very friendly bird life showing that they were happy to be flitting around with us close by. Unfortunately the cafe was closed. Leaving the gardens we went on to the Redleaf Resort for our lunch. Our last stop was at Govetts Leap which has a spectacular view, even though it wasn't a clear day. The beautiful sandstone walls overlooking the tree tops in the deep canyons of the Grose Valley below made a wonderful sight. Govetts Leap was named after the assistant to the Surveyor General William Romaine Govett in 1831.

TOURS UPDATE: So ends another year of Narellan Probus Club Holiday and day tripping around our great country. Again, two holiday trips were arranged and those who attended came home with favourable reports, and even though participation for the first trip to Batemans Bay was lower than hoped for, the second trip to the Sunshine Coast was most certainly, by all reports, a fantastic trip (this destination was recommended by a club member). A variety of monthly day trips throughout the year presented some “curved balls” thrown in my direction resulting in some changes at short notice. These causes were closures of venues both to visit and for lunch, but all hurdles were successfully negotiated – some better than others – but when things happen beyond an organiser’s control it is a case of “going with the flow”. So, looking toward 2019 I have planned what I hope is a varied calendar, even though we, as a club, are now seeing some repeats of day trips from our early club years, the first being a revisit to Gosford and a lunch cruise on Brisbane Waters in February. Our first planned holiday trip is to the New England District using Tamworth as a “base” for 4 nights. Peter

Please join us and take the opportunity of visiting interesting places and enjoying each

other’s company.
