Pastor’s Letter Dear Parish Family,

Way back in 1990 I sent my first personally created Christmas card. I had been on an autumn hike in early October when an early season snow blanketed the Adirondacks. I took a picture of the snowfall on John’s Brook in Keene Valley, NY. It was a beautiful shot and I wanted to share it with all my friends and family. Everyone enjoyed it. Since then I have created a Christmas card each year, almost always a winter scene from one of my adventures.

Back then, personal cards were just becoming popular. Now it seems that almost every card you receive contains pictures of families and their adventures during the year. Before cards were personalized you had to write in them yourself. Without a signature or a message, how would the receiver know who the card was from? Now, in the electronic age, comes this question: Is it enough to send your card without a handwritten signature or message? Apparently the card companies think so. The printer I use offers to send my cards, sealing each and applying postage, without my ever having to touch the card. Just upload a list of names and addresses and in seconds it can all be done. It is tempting. But somehow, for me, it seems to miss the point. Christmas is personal.

The message of Christmas is that our God has become human. And in that humanity God is present to each of us in a completely personal way. God knows our name. God is aware of our joys and sorrows. God is present to each of us in our need. This to me is an amazing act of faith. Over 7.7 billion people inhabit this earth and we believe that each of us is important to God in a completely personal way. All of a sudden writing my name on 135 Christmas cards does not seem such an enormous task! But in the light of the Incarnation, to love those who God has given us, personally and individually, has eternal and enormous meaning.

Here at Sacred Hearts it is our job to welcome and to love each person who comes here to pray or to receive help. It is the most important thing that we do and we strive to do it well and unconditionally. I am so glad you are here with us today. I hope that you have received this amazing blessing of God’s individual love. I hope that you know that you are always welcome here I wish you a blessed Christmas and New Year! Sincerely yours in Christ,

Rev. Michael A. Vetrano Pastor

ardship Supporting the Basilica Parish of the Sacred Hearts We hope that you enjoyed your Christmas visit to Sacred Hearts. We are a small year round community and the maintenance of this beautiful church and its many ministries are made possible by the year round support and special holiday generosity of each of you. We are grateful for your generosity today. If you would like to learn about other opportunities to support us please consider the following: Become a Registered Member or Friend of the Basilica. You are welcome to make Sacred Hearts your home parish and if you already belong to another community we would be happy to include you in our membership as a Friend of the Basilica. Visit: www.shjmbasilica.org/register Give Automatically—Month by Month The most difficult challenge, in terms of support, is the seasonal nature of our community. Our mass attendance sinks low in the winter and our weekly support also reaches a year long low. One thing you can do to help is to sign up for automated monthly giving. There are three ways to do this:

Donating to a Specific Purpose Some parishioners prefer to donate to a specific purpose. This is easy to accomplish. To be sure your donation is used for the maintenance and improvement of our basilica church, simply make your gift to our In Nomine Domini Fund. You may also make a gift to one of our building projects or even to a specific ministry.

First Fruits First Fruits is our own automated giving program. All you need do is visit our office with a voided check and fill out a form which allows us to debit your checking account each week or month. This is even safer than writing paper checks.

Bill Pay If you use online banking you have probably noticed that you can set up your account to send a check each month. Similar to First Fruits but you set this up yourself.

PayPal If you use Pay Pal, your account can be set up to allows you to make a monthly donation to the parish. You can also use Pay Pal to make this donation by credit card. On our website just click the Donate button on the home page and you can set this up.

Eucharistic Adoration Become and Anchor of Prayer for Family Life

The Catechism quotes Saint John Paul II: “The Church and the world have a great need for Eucharistic worship. Jesus awaits us in this sacrament of love. Let us not refuse the time to go to meet him in adoration, in contemplation full of faith, and open to making amends for the serious offenses and crimes of the world. Let our adoration never cease. Our parish will have an hour of Eucharistic Adoration following the noon mass on Fridays. We would like to dedicate this hour as a time of contemplation and reflection to pray especially for our families. For strength in family life, for the return of family members to the church, for healing and reconciliation within families that are hurting.
