“Glyndebourne is passionate about sharing the quality and commitment we dedicate to all that we do with as broad a range of audiences as possible.”David Pickard, General Director

“Livecast was mesmeric! Bravo to all involved... I watched on my laptop” matthew Badham (on Facebook)

We’re bringing opera to more people by:

Taking our performances for schools to a wider range of venues outside Glyndebourne

making live performances available to larger audiences of under-30 year olds at greatly reduced ticket prices

Showing new productions to broader audiences through cinema-screenings, big screen relays and online media.

What the NGP has already achieved:

In 2010, 3,682 school children experienced full scale opera performances at Glyndebourne and Stoke-on-Trent as part of our Performances for Schools programme

In 2010, over 4,700 people watched digital recordings of three Festival productions on big-screen relays to the courtyard of Somerset house

During the 2011 Festival, over 1,000 tickets for Don Giovanni and The Turn of the Screw were available to under-30 year olds for only £30

In June 2011, in partnership with The Guardian, we were the first UK opera house to reach a global internet audience through a live broadcast of Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg.

Securing artistic excellence“artistic excellence has always been at the heart of all that Glyndebourne does. During my time as music Director, I have relished the unrivalled rehearsal opportunities and detailed musical preparation at our disposal. I am delighted the New Generation Programme has been established to ensure that the commitment to producing the very best work we can, will continue to be integral to Glyndebourne.” Vladimir Jurowski, Glyndebourne Music Director

We’re promoting artistic excellence by:

Creating more opportunities to develop and showcase the talent of Glyndebourne Chorus members

Expanding the experience of emerging singers through understudying, performing small roles and specially developed training programmes

Training and developing emerging conductors and directors

Supporting the Composer in residence programme to develop the skills of a young composer and the creation of new work

Initial funding for a long-term programme of new commissions.

What the NGP has already achieved:

During the 2011 Festival, Glyndebourne Chorus members took part in three performances of Charpentier’s La Descente d’Orphée aux Enfers

In 2011, Luke Styles was appointed NGP Glyndebourne Young Composer, with a remit that includes the creation of new work in opera and music theatre

Thanks to the NGP, from 2011 Glyndebourne was able to extend its support of the National opera Studio (NoS), offering two young choristers the opportunity to take part in the NoS acclaimed annual training programme for exceptional talent.

“The whole experience was magnificent from start to finish. we were so warmly welcomed on our arrival and the performance itself was outstanding… our students enjoyed their visit to Glyndebourne and have been inspired by both the music and the setting – I suspect for many this will be the beginning of a lifelong love of opera.” Director of Music, Marymount School

We’re helping more people enjoy and learn about opera by:

Commissioning a community-focused opera in which young people can participate, every three years

Developing performance and participation skills through our youth groups

Introducing school pupils to opera for the first time through opera experience workshops and live performance

Commissioning work created specifically for primary schools

Identifying, nurturing and preparing outstanding young singers for music college and university

Exploring the use of digital content to expand our education and outreach work.

ImagoA new community-based opera commissioned by the NGP

Glyndebourne has a long and proud history of commissioning and producing operas designed to be enjoyed and performed by young people. Following the success of Knight Crew in 2010, we have commissioned a new large-scale opera, Imago, to be performed in 2013. once again this will give untrained singers from the local community the chance to perform alongside professionals on the Glyndebourne stage.

“Expertise across all areas of the Glyndebourne team has always been a vital component in allowing us to realise our ambition of creating world-class opera. we are committed to being an organisation that promotes knowledge sharing within a collaborative working environment, protecting and developing the skills and expertise required to stage exceptional operatic performances.” Gus Christie, Executive Chairman

We’re developing the skills of the Glyndebourne team by:

Supporting bespoke training and professional/personal development to enhance expertise

Providing technical apprenticeships to create the next generation of theatre craftspeople

Funding placements and internships to promote careers and develop future leaders in the arts.

What the NGP has already achieved:

In 2010, we launched a two-year technical apprentice scheme in the Costume department as part of our plan to ensure that the knowledge and skills in our making departments are passed on to future generations

In 2011, we established a training programme for all staff with management responsibilities.

“The NGP is not a substitute for existing funding channels, but it can be an enabler, providing initial funding to get essential projects underway. This was demonstrated by the successful refurbishment of the Ebert room, made possible by underwriting from the NGP that gave us the confidence to commence work before we had raised funds in full from other sources. The result of the project - a state-of-the-art second performing space – encourages us all to look forward with boldness and enthusiasm.” Martin Smith, Chair, NGP Committee

Transforming the Ebert Room In autumn 2010, work commenced on transforming Glyndebourne’s oldest rehearsal space, The Ebert room, into a state-of-the-art studio theatre. In addition to rehearsals, it is now used for audience talks and study events, education and outreach projects. we were able to commence the planning of this £1million project secure in the knowledge that the funding would be under-written by the NGP.

How is the NGP governed? The New Generation Programme (NGP) has been established by Glyndebourne arts Trust (GaT), the limited company and registered charity responsible for raising money through membership, sponsorship and other fund-raising activity to support the charitable objectives of Glyndebourne Productions Limited.

a committee of Trustees of Glyndebourne arts Trust, comprising martin Smith (Chair) and John Botts CBE, has been established to take ultimate responsibility for NGP – to monitor fund-raising strategy and performance, asset management and utilisation of resources. The funds are held in separate accounts, managed predominantly by third party fund-managers, from whom regular reports are received. Use of the funds is subject to specific approval by this committee, having satisfied themselves that any request meets the key NGP criteria. The fund is reviewed annually by external auditors.

How will the NGP’s performance be monitored?a full report of funds raised during the year, income earned from these funds and an explanation of projects undertaken will be provided in Glyndebourne’s annual report, issued each spring. all supporters of NGP will receive a copy of the annual report and a year-end update on the current NGP Programme. additional information will be communicated more widely through the Glyndebourne Festival and Tour programmes and glyndebourne.com

How can you support the NGP?we welcome donations of any size. You can designate your donation as unrestricted or dedicate it to a specific current or future NGP programme. Your donation can be made in person, by post or at glyndebourne.com. Legacies for Glyndebourne can also be designated to the NGP.
