Since 2001, Heeley Green has seen locals gather to mark

the beginning of Christmas with a Lantern Parade. Children make lanterns at school, then on the first Friday of December they are lit, the Christmas lights are switched on, and a swarm of Heeley-ites process towards Heeley Parish Church for a carol service. But not this year.

The cost of this Heeley tradition exceeds £3000 with most of this

coming from the South Community Assembly. Martin Hughes, Assembly Manager, explained: “The Councillors of the South Community Assembly allocated the majority of their budget for 2011/12 in March, and the remainder in October... they chose to allocate resources to other priorities, meaning there was no capacity to allocate a specific amount for community events and festivals.”

Likewise, Heeley Development Trust’s Heeley Events & Activities

Team (HEAT), the other key player in organising the Lantern Parade, are similarly squeezed. Maxine Bowler outlined their position: ‘The event costs a minimum of £2800 just to put up the lights on Heeley Green. There are further costs, roughly £500, for artists working with local children to make the lanterns; money for a brass band; PA system and publicity. The cost of the lights has traditionally been covered by the Area Assembly and Area Panel before that. The Trust would have been able to raise

the usual £500, but to secure the main funding was not possible. It’s a real shame its not a priority’.

Local shopkeepers, too, were disappointed to hear that 2011’s

festivities had been cancelled. Mrs C Smith of Premier Grocers felt “we’re a forgotten community at Heeley”, and Sam of Bradley’s Cafe told the Voice, “all the shopkeepers used to chip in.... I can’t put down what I really want to say!”.

Other residents also expressed regret, such as Sarah Blandy:

Martin Hughes offered some hope, saying, “Councillors may choose to set aside a budget for community festivals in 2012/13. I also intend to work with groups and shopkeepers in Heeley to explore options for storing the lights locally, looking for cheaper installation options, contributions from shopkeepers, etc.”.

It’s Happening in Heeley...

On two afternoons at the end of November children from Ann’s Grove School worked with the Heeley Millennium Park Team to plant over 600 new trees in the park and at the school.

The trees for the park were donated by the Woodland Trust as part of their national ‘Community Trees’ campaign and included a wide range of native trees and shrubs including Birch, Oak, Rowan and Hazel. Children from year 5 planted trees around a group of oak trees which had been planted by children from the same school 10 years ago. Hopefully their trees will soon catch up with the others and, you never know, maybe in 10 years time we’ll be planting some more with the children of the original oak tree planters!

On Tuesday 8th November local residents got to look at the latest plans for the Millennium Park and to talk to the Heeley Development Staff responsible for designing it and making it happen.

Shown here is one of the ‘artist’s impressions’ produced by students from Sheffield University Landscape Department which were on display in the Institute. Plans were well received by all who came. Trust Manager Andy Jackson said “We felt it was important to talk to people about what was

30 hours per week. 1 year contract initially

(extension subject to funding)£19,656 per annum pro rata.

CLOSING DATE: 16 JANUARY 2012

We are looking to recruit someone to organise a programme of events and activities in Heeley Millennium Park, Sheffield’s largest community owned and managed greenspace.

The Millennium Park is currently undergoing a £500,000 transformation with funding from Big Lottery Community Spaces and this role will be key to the success of the project.

The new worker will organise a series of events and activities throughout the year to enable community involvement in the physical improvements and to raise local awareness of the new facilities. The post holder will also be required to identify ways of increasing revenue for the ongoing maintenance of the Park and to establish links with similar organisations regionally in order to share experience and best practice.

This role is suitable for someone with a strong background in community engagement, in environmental activities and in events organisation. Experience of successful fund-raising and open space development would also be useful.

happening. It’s been a while since the first consultation especially as big changes are about to happen.”

PROGRESS SO FAROver the last month things have been moving fast and we’re beginning to see the changes. A new BMX and Mountain bike trail has been completed and 2 new swings are going into the playground. As well as some repairs to the safety surfaces and the ‘witches hat’, the playground railings will be being extended to take in the small ‘wood’ nearby and include a new picnic area inside the railings for us grown-ups who need a rest while the children run around.

OFFICIAL LAUNCH To mark the start of the improvements on the Millennium Park there will be an official launch on Saturday 14th January 2012 from 12 o’clock. Local people are invited to try out some of the new facilities which have recently been put into the Millennium Park and do their bit for wildlife by planting a tree. On the day people will get a chance to borrow a bike and work with trainers from Heeley Development Trust’s Recycle Bikes who’ll show how to improve your riding skills and how to get around the track with the most amount of fun and the least amount of danger! The mass tree planting will be led by staff from the Tinsley Tree project and Ed Thatcher, Community Forester, as well as the Park’s own Maintenance team using trees supplied through the national Big Tree project.

It’s Happening in Heeley...

As many readers already know, the Church and Community Centre have been based here in Heeley for about 25 years. Upstairs (on Fitzroy Road) there is a Church where all are welcome to come to worship at 10.45 or 6.00 every Sunday. Downstairs (on Northcote Rd) there is a thriving community centre that is busy with children’s and youth clubs, a toddler group and luncheon club, and many other activiites run by organisations who rent rooms from us.

Here are some dates for your diary as the Christmas Season approaches:Saturday 17 December 11.00am Carol Singing on Heeley Green with Heeley Parish Church (hot punch and mince pies!)Sunday 18 December 10.45am Children’s Nativity Church Service 6.00pm Carols by Candlelight Sunday 25 December 11.00am Christmas Day Church ServiceWe wish you a Happy Christmas!

Christmas, dark nights and the cold winter are enjoyable for many of us. But for some of us it is a really difficult time of year – for example, people on low income, people who’ve lost loved ones at this time of year and those who don’t have close family and friends. So it’s not surprising that it’s one of the busiest times of year for Sheffield Samaritans. That’s why Samaritan volunteers, as usual, will be on hand throughout the festive season, 24 hours a day, to listen in confidence to anyone who is experiencing distress and despair, including people with suicidal feelings.Sheffield Samaritans currently has about 100 volunteers providing a confidential listening service but more are needed to help run this vital service. Carol Sexty, Outreach Officer, says “ Anyone can be a Samaritan

volunteer – you don’t need any formal qualifications or previous experience. The main qualities we are looking for are an ability to listen, keep things confidential and not judge people”. For more information about volunteering please contact Carol (outreach) on 0790 7890309, email: [email protected] or log onto the Samaritans website: www.samaritans.org If you need to talk to someone, you can contact Samaritans by telephoning: 0114 276 7277 or 0845 790 790. You can write to Chris, PO Box 90 90, Stirling FK8 2SA or you can email: [email protected].

You can also call in to our centre at 272 Queens Road, Sheffield S2 4DL (10am-10pm, Mon-Friday, when volunteers are available).

Bleak Midwinter? Samaritans are here to listen

During the first week of November, Heeley Development Trust’s Online Manager, Maxine Bowler, organised a very successful week of Digital Inclusion events called Go On Sheffield. The events, were part of a national UK Online Centre initiative and almost 60 events were organised across the city to encourage ‘non-liners’. Sponsorship was provided by Plusnet, in the form of 50 one year internet packages.

The week included successful inter-generational events, at High Storrs, Yewlands, Parkwood, City and King Ecgbert schools, in which the Trust trained young people to be ‘Digital Champions’ and then pass on their IT skills to parents, grandparents and local residents. There were events at Mecca bingo, two Wetherspoons pubs, a stall on the market, a flagship event at the Town Hall, classes at Sheffield Pensioners’ Action Group, and many other venues.

Mainly funded by UK Online, Maxine Bowler and her team of dedicated volunteers have been looking at ways to help the 1 in 5 people in the city who are disadvantaged by having no access to computers, excluding them from many things that most of us take for granted.

Maxine says “Our banner says ‘We do IT anywhere’ - we offer to do computer taster sessions and classes across the city. We want to reach out to all those people who may be afraid of having a go, or wonder if learning to use a computer is worth the effort. We make it easy and fun.”

If you would like more information or would like to volunteer with the project, contact Maxine: 0114 250 0613

Heeley and Meersbrook boast a plethora of artists and crafts people, and a number of them were selling their work at St Mary’s Christmas Vintage and Craft Market, Bramall Lane in November.

Kate Billington runs Billigoat Designs. Although trained as an architect and aerobics teacher, she has worked in glass for over 20 years. “I randomly picked an evening class when I was living in Brighton and I fell in love with the material...now is the time to take it a bit further than a hobby.” Her stained glass panels, are designed and produced with traditional leaded glass and copperfoil techniques. Across every sheet of glass are variations in texture and colour, so no two pieces of work will ever be the same. “Even earrings have their own personalities” says Kate.

Coming from a creative background it is fitting that she has found her niche with stained glass:“I can’t think of anything I enjoy more. It’s an extension of myself, being able to be creative through a material I am very familiar with. ” To see Kate’s work see: http://www.billigoatdesigns.co.uk/

You may have seen linocuts and etchings by James Green around Sheffield in the Millennium Galleries or The Old Sweet Shop.

Graphic and distinct, his work is influenced by artists such as Goya and Kid Acne. He documents some of the Heeley and Meersbrook views, and says he is inspired by: “...people, landscapes (especially Sheffield and North Wales), ridiculous dreams and animals, especially donkeys.”

With a degree in Fine Art, James is a self-taught printmaker. He prints on paper, mugs and plates and will soon be extending his homeware collection.

Sally Moreton is a sculptor. She graduated from Cheltenham School of Art in 1989. At one time she loved using kitchen items in her work: “I was making a statement about trying not to be too masculine, like heroic sculptors casting in bronze” she says.

Sally’s collection of mirrors, framed with collage and paper mache, appear pretty, but reveal dark and disturbing themes. Small macabre trinket boxes, and other richly embellished objects are Sally’s current project. She chooses readily available materials, like nails or lentils, and uses them in unusual ways:“It’s the idea of insides and outsides, and whether it’s a pleasing, or a nasty surprise, once you get inside. It’s that kind of juxtaposition I want.”

“You have to think outside the box” she says. Eyes peeled for Sally’s macabre collection in the near future!

Honey Pie Tearoom is open! The old Indian restaurant (Momtaz) has now been transformed into a quaint and quirky tearoom. The menu of soups, sandwiches, coffees and cakes lives up to all mouth watering expectations. After school teas are already popular, and plans are underway for evening events and parties. Go on. You know you want to…Opening times:Tues to Sat, 10am-5pm. Sundays, 12 noon – 6pm.

Carfield Friends, the parent group at Carfield Primary, organised a Christmas Fair on Saturday 26th November. Held in both dining rooms and the lower hall, adults and kids alike enjoyed festive stalls and fayre in a festive ambience. The Friends raised almost £1000 and have decided to make this an annual event. School is now gearing up towards Christmas. With over 700 children, we have a variety of concerts involving pupils aged 3-11 (but not all at the same time!), and festive workshops for parents and carers.

Carfield Friends continue to work hard to raise funds for school and develop links with the wider community. As well as the Christmas Fair, there was a Christmas Coffee morning on 2nd

given our curriculum an overhaul too, and have begun an ‘enquiry-based approach’ to learning. Y6 children got a mention in ‘The Media Education Association’ magazine for a fantastic film incorporating creative poetry readings edited over stills of the Sheffield Blitz - an extremely moving movie. Our swimmers have also received accolades from the Sheffield Swimming Service for showing good practice, excellent behaviour, and growing confidence in the water. Following input from the Royal Shakespeare Company, two of our staff have set up a ‘Shakespeare Club’ in which the children get to base drama around the works of the Bard.

Friends of Newfield have recently received excellent news: the bid they submitted to the South Assembly Positive Activities Small Grant fund was successful… to the tune of nearly £2000! Newfield School with Activity Sheffield, are going to be running a “Saturday Club”, making full use of Newfield’s fantastic sports facilities, on Saturday mornings, 11am to 1pm, from 21st January 2012. There’ll be 5-a-side football on the Astroturf pitches, and all sorts of different sports in the hall. Bring along your ideas of what you’d like and we’ll try to make it happen! We want the sessions to be as inclusive and fun as possible, so although they are designed for 8-16 year olds, parents will be very welcome to stay and join in if they wish, and younger brothers and sisters too, if parents are staying.

Sessions will cost £1 and there will be refreshments available. We hope to see you there! Email: f r iendsofnew f ie ld@gmai l . com

We welcomed Ofsted inspectors into our school on 4-5th October and were delighted that they agreed with our evaluation of the school as ‘good with outstanding features’. We are really proud of this external confirmation of what we know already and credit is due to all our community; staff, children, parents, carers and governors who work so hard to make our school the successful. The full report is freely accessible on the Ofsted website.

We were recently awarded two quality standards awards; ‘Quality in Extended Services’; and the ‘Achievement for All’ initiative. These are proudly displayed in our entrance. We’ve

The pupils at Meersbrook Bank have had another busy term with themes such as ‘recycling’ (Y3) and ‘inventions’ (Y4 and Y5). Weekly football training sessions continue with help from Sheffield United.

There has also been a lot of dance and drama activities. M&M Theatrical Productions visited the school and performed ‘The Wizard of Oz’ for pupils and staff. It was so popular that the school is hoping they will return next year. Y5 and Y6 pupils had a trip to the Lyceum theatre for ‘Little Leap Forward’ - an account of growing up during China’s cultural revolution.

‘Danceworks’, a Sheffield based company, have been working with the current Y4 and Y5 over the past four years. Their job has been to get more children interested in dance. Their work in school was linked to the ‘Beau jest’ (the dance with the digger), and ‘Toilet Tango’, performed on Devonshire Green. This term the Y4 and Y5 children participated in a final magical theatre piece where a figure made from newspaper was made to dance.

December. All funds raised are going towards our quest to re-vamp our food technology area. Carfield Friends is an important forum for everyone to get together and develop community spirit. The Farm Page...Farewell to Fuel Busters

Eco Minds

The final months of South Yorkshire Energy Centre’s (SYEC) Family Fuel Busters project (FFB) were hectic, with record numbers of home visits to help householders stay warm and save money. Gareth, FFB Project Officer, fitted loads of door brushes, and dispensed welcome advice about insulation and draught-proofing. With two years’ funding from ScottishPower Energy People Trust, the FFB project has engaged, educated and supported hundreds of fuel-poor families to achieve ‘affordable warmth’. The ‘positive pester power’ of primary school children, when educated in energy efficiency, has also been harnessed to reduce home energy use. Over 4,000 primary children have become ‘Fuel Busters’ either in their own classrooms or by visiting the Energy House itself. There were 13 FFB Fun Days over the summer, with different activities and themes

Older, Wiser, Warmer is a project for older people in five Sheffield communities run by South Yorkshire Energy Centre and Heeley City Farm. Funded by Comic Relief, volunteers aged 50+ are trained to become ‘Energy Champions’ who then help other older people get energy efficient and affordably warm.

‘It’s important that everyone knows how to stay warm without spending a fortune’ said project officer, Shelly Davis. ‘We advise older people how to use their heating controls to best effect..., help them get the

for each week: saving energy and money; recycling; and renewable energy. Young and old visitors alike made windmills and turbine towers from recycled magazines, junk robots, and a HUGE six foot+ dinosaur from recycled plastic with a solar-powered tongue. ‘Junk-A-Saurus’ won the competition to name the creature.

At the Autumn Show, SYEC held a ‘Sorry You’re Leaving’ party with a banner, streamers and party blowers. Many people came and

Funded by EcoMinds, Heeley City Farm invites anyone with mental health issues to try food growing at Meersbrook Park Walled Garden. The Walled Garden contains herb, vegetable and Japanese gardens, greenhouses, and an orchard. Sessions run twice weekly all year. Friendly support, tools and gloves are provided, giving you opportunities to meet people, learn skills, get outside and eat food! One participant said, ‘I like coming here because of the friendships I’ve made. I’ve also realised how important gardening has been to my overall health.’ To find out more, contact Rachel Sanchez, Mental Health Worker: 07847 076239 or [email protected]

best from their energy company, and let them know of financial and other types of support.’

Training and then acting as an ‘Energy Champion’ takes two hours a week for six months. Ten volunteers will be recruited every six months from five communities. ‘Tackling rising fuel bills and discovering new ways to keep warm and active in winter is interesting. We have fun learning together, and then help other older people who are more isolated, also very rewarding for volunteers’, said Shelly.

Older, Wiser, Warmer ‘Energy Champions’ from phase1, (Upperthorpe/ Netherthorpe), are now active, offering energy saving tips to friends, family and neighbours. Phase2 takes place in Darnall/ Tinsley, but the Project is based at Heeley’s South Yorkshire Energy Centre and any older person worried about keeping warm can ask for information (support is offered over the phone or by home visits to vulnerable households).

In 1909 a row of shops was demolished to make space for Heeley Palace, a 1450 seat cinema. The Palace opened in 1911 with silent screenings, converting to sound in 1930. First closed in 1963, the Palace reopened as a bingo hall, then reintroduced films in February 1965, but finally closed before the year was out. It was purchased by Ponsford’s as a warehouse, then demolished for their new department store. The 600 seat Heeley Coliseum opened in 1913, remaining open until 1961 when it was demolished for Heeley’s first supermarket, Fine Fayre. It was owned by Miss

Blaskey, proprietor of several wallpaper & paint shops in Sheffield. Older residents may remember Leo, her long-serving commissionaire. Heeley Green Picture House opposite the Waggon & Horses opened in 1920. It was used as a theatre in the 1930s, before reverting back to film in 1938. It closed in 1959, but was reopened as The Tudor in 1961, then closed the following year to become a bingo hall, then a snooker hall, before being demolished. Abbeydale Cinema, also opened in 1920, and its ballroom were very popular with Heeley folk - many patrons met their partners dancing to G Lee & Band. During the War there were 18 fish & chip shops in Heeley where you could buy supper after watching a film.
