Dear Tom

I would like to start by saying a big thank you. Myself & Margaret are incredibly happy with theoutcome of our new kitchen. From the verybeginning of the job to the very end your help, advice and knowledge I believe made all thedifference to a perfect finish. We can’t believe the transformation from how it looked before to how it looks now. I can honestly say I have never met a builder who takes such pride in his work. I also didn’t think I would ever meet a builder who is more fussy than the customer themselves. Thank you to all your team who were always polite, thoughtful & professional.

I will of course always be using TSD to carry out all our future work & will always with great pleasure recommend you to friends, family & potential customers.

Best Regards

I do hope that you had a merry Christmas and that 2013 is a good one! Another packed edition with lots of New Year inspired articles. If you’ve already broken your New Years’ resolutions (or didn’t have the heart to make any) the I’m sure you’ll be able to relate to Ian Duncan’s article on page 68. You’ll notice that there is quite an emphasis on health and fitness this month – and there’s something for everyone! We’ve got everything from Fit as a Fiddle courses run by Age Concern (page 8) to running in Richmond Park for beginners (page 48). Having watched friends take up the sport in recent years and watched with admiration and a slight envy (but done nothing about it!) then you may well see me there….. New Malden is indeed a wonderful place to live – well that’s my opinion and I do hope that you agree. The local Rotary Club put heart and soul

Earlier this year the Community of New Malden Businesses (CNMB) along with some interested local people decided that it would be great to try to bring a farmers market to New Malden. The idea grew and we agreed to stage a Christmas market on Saturday 1st December as a trial for a more regular market. St Georges Square was the venue and our thanks must go to CLS Holdings for allowing this to happen. We had 21 stalls on the day including a butchers, bakers, cakemakers, cheese, hot food sellers and a number of gift stalls. The day was a huge success and we received great feedback from everyone we spoke to on the day. Many people commented how nice it

Surbiton Farmers’ MarketWinner of awards for Best Food Retailer and its Commitment to the Community, the Surbiton Farmers’ Market is held on the third Saturday of the month in Maple Road Surbiton. Surplus proceeds from stall fees and fundraising are donated to local charities and causes. The market has helped raise more than £30,000 in the three years since it began trading. The market will start the New Year with its first-ever January market, on Saturday 19 January, and run monthly throughout 2013. We hope that a regular monthly farmers market will begin in March 2013 and we would love to hear from anyone who is interested in getting involved.www.nmfarmersmarket.co.uk VVoice

Thanks a bunch!A few months ago I had a call from Mari at Seasons Florist on Coombe Lane offering a beautiful bouquet of flowers for us to give away. We asked readers to nominate someone special. Thank you so much to all the entries – so sorry they could not all have won!And so, our first winner was Catherine Parmenter who was nominated her friend Tatty Bowman. This is what Tatty wrote.

“I have known Catherine for about 6 years now. She helps me by looking after my son George, who has Down’s syndrome and autism. This gives me time to spend with my daughter, and generally recharge my batteries. It is her job - family support worker for disabled children, but for Catherine and her families it is so much more. She is literally our lifeline. She gives us so much love and support which is not part of any job description. Recently when her home on the Cambridge estate was damaged by the fire, she ended up having a heart attack on that same day. We all prayed we wouldn’t lose her. I think the thought of her real family and all her ‘adopted’ families kept her going and we became even closer to her.

When my son sees her coming he drops everything to hug her and literally hangs round her neck for hours. Knowing that I leave my son in the care of this wonderful woman makes taking a little respite guilt-free. She couldn’t be more loved if she was related - in fact she is very much part of our family and we want to thank her from the bottom of our heart. A bunch of flowers would be a good start!” Catherine is pictured with George and his sister Izzy, both of whom adore her. Tatty tells us that Catherine was so touched she won! VVoice

New Malden HistoryBy-pass surgery by Robin GillLong standing readers may remember an article I wrote back in 2007 about the building and opening of the Kingston By-Pass in 1927. The road was so popular Noel Coward wrote a song about it, called “Give Me The Kingston By-Pass” a rendition of which was kindly sent to me by Mr John Root. The popularity of the road was the initial cause of the many problems it developed over its first few years of use. This, together with the speed of the cars using the road as a test track, soon gave it a reputation as an accident blackspot. A speed limit for traffic had been set at 20mph by the Motor Car Act of 1903, but this was widely ignored as more powerful cars were built. This limit was abolished at the beginning of 1931, and it wasn’t until 1937 that speedometers were made compulsory in new cars.Spectator sport The weekend after the opening of the road, thousands of motorists arrived to use it. It was immediately identified that there were four dangerous stretches

where the highway was crossed by minor roads, (Hook, Malden Road, Burlington Road, and Coombe Lane) and policemen were soon positioned on points duty at these spots to try to keep the traffic moving. The worst problems however, were in the area surrounding the Robin Hood entrance to Richmond Park with traffic trying to join and leave the road from various directions. It was quickly decided that the road needed to be widened there, costing another £6000 with a roundabout to be introduced as a “temporary” measure. The following weekend saw park keepers regulating the flow of traffic in and out of the park, with the police on duty on the roads. It was even suggested that the park gate be closed to incoming traffic, and the gate at Ladderstile (which was pedestrian only) be used instead. The police on points duty at the various crossroads were sometimes in fear of their lives, and it was proposed that some form of lighthouse be installed at these intersections. By the second week of November, there had already been three deaths on the road. Fortunately, by this time, the novelty of the new road was starting to wear off, with more people watching the traffic, than driving at Kingston Vale.

Planting a legacy At the beginning of 1928, Surrey County Council decided to plant 88 trees per mile alongside the bypass costing £5600. The exception to this scheme was at the various crossroads where the police were still in danger. Accidents were commonplace, and it was decided to widen the road at the Malden junction, with the occupiers of nearby properties ordered to cut down trees and bushes, so as not to obscure the turning. The AA and RAC had to patrol the road six

days a week, and when lighting was suggested, it was revealed that neither gas nor electricity cables had been laid along the bypass. Pedestrians reported that three cars had been seen racing over 300 yards on more than one occasion, and it was possible that four cars could travel abreast (there was no barrier in the middle of the road). In August, it was announced that the newly formed Roads Beautifying Association would be planting around 50 different species of tree along the length of the road, with the notorious crossroads being marked by the planting of Lombardy poplars in each of the four corners. The other trees would include half a mile of flowering cherries in pink and white, together with turkey oaks, hawthorns, sweet briars, Penzance briars, common broom, white broom, and cotoneasters. 2000 trees were planted between 31st October and 4th February 1929. The island sites at each end of the road were planted with crab-apples and bulbs. While daffodils, bluebells, foxgloves and sweet briar were planted in Coombe Woods. Unfortunately these newly planted trees and bulbs immediately faced problems. A motorist was fined £1 for parking his car on the side of the road and going to pick bluebells, and vandals from Malden destroyed 25 of the trees even though they were surrounded by 6 foot high wire guards. Additionally, a life size bronze statue of a girl was stolen from its

site near to the junction for Merton. She weighed about a hundredweight (45 kilos+) and had hands outstretched inviting other children to play in the country. Another organisation which involved itself in tree planting along the bypass was the Roads Of Remembrance Association who planted trees for those who died in the First World War. An oak tree was planted at Kingston Vale in memory of Flight Commander Philip Johnston an Australian with connections in the area. Johnston was a First World War “Ace” who was killed over German lines aged only nineteen. Eight hundred further trees were planted, marked with memorial plaques, and dedicated at a cost of 2 guineas each. Again, many of these were damaged or destroyed by Malden youths. This led to a “watcher” being appointed. He was a former policeman whose job was to check that the new saplings were secure. By August 1932 there were a number of scarlet oaks with seats made from teak as living memorials to fallen men. Trees and bulbs weren’t the only things to be buried at the side of the road. In September 1929, police dug up a tin containing jewellery worth about £250 from a robbery at East Sheen. One of the workmen building the road a few years earlier had buried it on his son’s behalf. £100 worth of jewels were still missing.

Property paradise But the greatest problem was with developers. Before the bypass land cost around £30 per acre, Surrey County Council paid £300 per acre, and by April 1929 an acre was worth £1200 adjacent to the highway. The land was being earmarked for housing. This would lead to what was called ribbon development with houses being built alongside most of the bypass. The building would destroy most of the trees to be replaced by property, driveways, and slip roads. Accidents were still happening along the bypass, and in September 1929 the Women’s Automobile and Sports Association placed their first Girl Scout on the road. Grace New had a puncture repair outfit, and Red Cross kit together with a spare tin of petrol for women

who had run out of fuel. She patrolled for eight hours a day on her motorcycle and sidecar, dressed in a blue jacket and breeches with white cuffs, black wellington boots and a blue peaked cap.

Petrol and eggs The smart new petrol stations built along the road soon started to branch out, being called petrol and egg stops. Most of the egg customers came at night or in the morning on their way home from dances. The chef was often busier than the mechanic, with as many different dishes to offer as brands of petrol. Most customers chose one particular brand of petrol, and one particular dish; bacon and eggs. From 12th April 1930 there were regular Red Cross patrols on the bypass at weekends. Operating from a first-aid station in a tent at the Malden crossroads, there were two men on motorcycles with sidecars carrying a surgical haversacks. By the end of October 1930 it was obvious that the original road surface was not standing up to the amount or type of traffic using the highway. Various road surfaces were tried out in stretches of 220 yards between Robin Hood Gate and Coombe Lane. The surface was disintegrating so much that a decrease in traffic was registered, and Surrey County Council decided (in March 1931) to superimpose another layer of concrete along the whole length of the road at a

cost of £90000. Not all accidents were serious, or ended in fatalities. In one instance a lorry carrying greyhounds overturned releasing its cargo; police spent over two days rounding up the dogs. Another occasion saw an RAF plane crash in a field near Kingston Vale, the pilot was unhurt, and as he stepped out of the wreckage, picked up a horseshoe, which he kept as a memento of his good luck.

Bang goes the neighbourhood On a more serious note, workmen digging a drain in August 1932 at the junction of Tolworth Rise and Warren Drive discovered a large amount of dynamite at a depth of three feet. Between 7000 and 8000 small cartridges were uncovered in numbered cartons. These had been left over from the original construction of the road, and contained enough unstable explosive to put a sizeable dent in Tolworth. The bypass had only been open for five years but had already gained a reputation for itself, not always for the right reasons.

It’s January, and you are feeling in need of a quick fix so you can begin to feel healthy again. But how do you decide on a suitable exercise regime to help you lose weight and regain vitality? Working out at home with the help of a video console has become a popular alternative to going out to a dance class or a gym. The great advantage is that it allows you to design a programme to suit your own needs and preferences. However if - like me - you’re not a great self-motivator, you may find it hard to keep going without a human instructor to give encouragement. After several attempts to follow an aerobic routine in my lounge I made the decision to join a regular exercise class. A quick browse round the websites of local clubs brings up an array of exercise styles with exotic-sounding names such as Zumba, Pilates, Ashtanga Yoga, Hatha Yoga and Tai Chi. It’s nice to be spoiled for choice, but there are a few things to consider before you start. How old are you? Do you have any medical conditions? How much exercise do you normally take?

HealthNew Year, new you!

If a leisurely stroll round the supermarket is your main form of exercise then a cardiovascular workout is probably not the place to start. You need to build your programme slowly, so you could begin with a beginners’ yoga class where you will be concentrating on breathing and stretching. If you are new to structured exercise you will be glad to know

that yoga is about doing as much as you feel your own body can manage. Its emphasis on slow movements, posture and deep breathing really helps to build muscular strength and improve balance. There are a variety of different kinds of yoga, some of which are really quite challenging for a beginner, so do have a chat with the instructor before booking your course. Pilates borrows heavily from yoga and was originally devised to help injured dancers and athletes. Once

again there is an emphasis on good posture and exercises are designed to strengthen the spine, improve circulation and open up the joints. As with Yoga you can look forward to a fantastic sense of release and revitalisation at the end of each class. However you decide to pursue your new exercise regime, make a promise to yourself to keep it up. A fitness programme that is currently enjoying huge success in this country is Zumba. Invented by Columbian choreographer Alberto Perez in the 1990s, Zumba combines exercise with dance. Unlike conventional dance classes where the instructor faces the class and teaches a series of steps, Zumba is a continuous series of free-flowing moves – the instructor stands with his or her back to the class, demonstrating actions for the students to follow. If you enjoy dancing to music then this is probably a good choice, but do think twice if your movement is restricted or if you suffer from high blood pressure. However you decide to pursue your new exercise regime, make a promise to yourself to keep it up. After a few weeks you’ll be surprised to find how much better you feel, both physically and mentally. It may take a few attempts before you find a class that suits you, but it will be worth it in the end. Make sure the New Year really does mean a new you. By Claudia Leaf VVoice

January can be a challenging time. After the excitement of Christmas and New Year, there’s often a slump in people’s moods, contending with shorter days and the cold. The Coombe Boys’ Parents and Friends Association (PFA) have come up with the perfect solution for a real pick-me-up. Another LADIES NIGHT, on Friday, 8 February, is being held to beat the winter blues. Coombe Boys’ School is an excellent local school for local boys and the PFA promote and support the school by raising funds for additional equipment and resources. Mums and friends can once again support these fundraising efforts by coming along to a relaxed and fun evening of pampering, tasting and shopping. Get your nails done, try some delicious food or treat yourself to some jewellery…and get to know other mums and friends of Coombe Boys

BeautyBeat the winter blues

The menopausal woman is the butt of jokes – jokes about mood, jokes about memory and jokes about…. well, just about everything. They make us laugh, but underlying the humour is a serious topic which is a bit taboo. Women don’t speak openly about hormonal changes, even though they may face symptoms that can impact on working life, social life and on family life. Just ask any husband or partner! Menopause is natural and inevitable – all women who live long enough will experience it. Flushes and sweats are the commonest symptom, troubling around 75% of women. Other symptoms may include mood swings, sleep disruption and some emotional symptoms. A few fortunate women sail through menopause symptom free, but most notice something, even if only mild. Some women go through menopause much earlier than normal, even as young as the 20s and 30s and need special help and support, as do women who have had cancer and subsequent menopause symptoms. How long does it last? The question I am most often asked- if only, I knew! For most women the worst of symptoms is over within a year or so, but in a few they seem to go on forever. The actual phase during which hormonal changes occur is described as peri-menopause and this varies enormously from woman to woman. This is partly what makes treatment decisions difficult. Women say “ I could put up with this, if only I knew how long it was for”. What about HRT? Whether or not you choose to use a medical therapy such as Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) will depend on the severity of your symptoms, how much they impact on your life and also how safe HRT is for you as an individual. An individualised assessment is essential for HRT use, although research is very reassuring about its safety. HRT is not one medication, but a whole variety and women should be offered choices in relation to type, dose and duration. Regular checks on HRT are recommended, easy to do but often overlooked. HRT remains the most effective treatment for moderate and severe menopausal symptoms, although other options are available. What should I do? The British Menopause Society suggests that all women approaching menopause should have the opportunity to discuss it with a health professional. In reality, few women get this opportunity, yet lifestyle, dietary and health changes made now may have a positive impact on health and well being both at the time of menopause and into the years beyond. Take positive steps Women say they want information, support and personalised advice. What’s normal, what’s not? Is HRT safe for me? When should I stop it? What about alternative or

complementary therapies? Why can’t I lose weight? How do I know if this is menopause? Am I ill? Am I going mad? The menopause is a natural event, but one which can cause upheaval and anxiety. Support is available and women deserve an improved level of care at this important time. One thing is certain – menopause is no joke, so don’t be embarrassed. Personalised menopause advice and treatment now available at a private New Malden Menopause Clinic. Email [email protected] for details or call Kathy on 07984 910177. VVoice

Released on 1st January, Quartet is a charming film with a sterling cast, directed by Oscar® winning actor Dustin Hoffman.Lifelong friends Wilf (Billy Connolly) and Reggie (Tom Courtenay), together with former colleague Cissy (Pauline Collins), are residents of Beecham House, a home for retired opera singers. Every year on Verdi’s birthday, the residents unite to give a concert to raise funds for their home. But when Jean Horton (Maggie Smith), a former grande dame of the opera fallen on hard times, also Reggie’s ex-wife and the fourth and most celebrated member of their former quartet, moves into the home to everyone’s surprise, the plans for this year’s concert start to unravel.

CompetitionWin a Quartet gardening set

As old grudges threaten to undermine past glories and theatrical temperaments play havoc with the rehearsal

schedule, it becomes apparent that having four of the finest singers in English operatic history under one roof offers no guarantee that the show will go on. Quartet is Dustin Hoffman’s directorial debut from a screenplay by Oscar® winner Sir Ronald Harwood (The Pianist). Quartet also stars Olivier Award-winning Sheridan Smith (Legally Blonde, The Musical) and four-time BAFTA winner Michael Gambon (the Harry Potter series, Gosford Park). Our friends at Momentum Pictures have given us some Quartet branded mini gardening sets to give away.Just email [email protected] with your name, address and phone number by 31st Jan. Sometimes everyday life can just be a little bit too much. How can you best cope with stress? Stress is the term used to describe our physical, mental and emotional reactions to what is happening in our lives. It is a perfectly natural reaction and was a vital response for our forebearers when faced with a fight or flight situation. Types of stressStress - when handled in the right way - can be good for us: it enables us to take on challenges, face fears and step outside our comfort zone. We also actively seek out that adrenaline rush when doing extreme sports, playing video games or watching horror movies. But too much stress on a daily basis may lead to you finding it hard to cope - like half a million people in the UK every year who report experiencing work-related stress. This is when stress becomes a part of your life and you find yourself having to deal with physical, mental or emotional pressures every day with no respite. Signs of stress When you are stressed your muscles contract and prepare for action. Your heart rate speeds up and your

HealthDealing with stress

blood pressure rises. Your body will react in one or more different ways, such as: breathlessness, feeling sick, headaches, constant tiredness, sweating, constipation or diarrhoea, muscle spasm, heartburn, lack of appetite and sexual difficulties. As a result, you may find it difficult to concentrate or to make decisions. You may start to avoid difficult situations or avoid talking to people about what’s going on and may find yourself crying frequently and feeling depressed. If not dealt with, stress can contribute to serious health problems such as ulcers, heart attacks and strokes.Learning to relax You may not always be able to remove the elements of your life which are causing you stress, but there are things you can do to help you deal with it. yourself some quiet time to relax can really help. Use the time to read or listen to music or try a relaxation technique for 20 minutes: close your eyes, breathing slowly and deeply. Think about which muscles are tense and try to relax them, imagining the tension just easing away. Focus on each part of your body in turn, starting with your feet and moving up through your body to the top of your head. You could also try a yoga or relaxation class to help relieve stress or go for regular walks at lunchtime. Tackling stress It may sound simple, but have you actually looked at exactly what is causing you stress and how you may be able to change the situation? If a person at work is causing you problems, can you discuss it with them or someone else? If you have too much work, can you find some help or ask a colleague to share the load? If you’ve said ‘yes’ to too many things, are there some you can say ‘no’ to? However much pressure you are under, try to take regular breaks to remove yourself from the cycle. Try to be well-organised - many situations look better when you know exactly what it is you have to deal with, rather than worrying about it. Find as much help as you can - whether it’s in the home or at work, so that you are sharing the load - and talk to friends, family or colleagues so you don’t feel that you are coping alone. VVoice

New Malden Sports Club General manager Claire Baker was born at home in Battersea, Afghan Road and moved to Mitcham with her parents at the age of 7. She moved to Morden in 1987 when she bought her first maisonette.Claire worked in the city for 22 years when she took up a career in Banking working for Barclays. Sport was always in the fore front so any opportunity to take time off from work was gratefully received. Claire decided to take a new career path, and after assisting Wimbledon Racquets & Fitness Club , she moved to New Malden Tennis Squash & Badminton in February 2007.What do you love about your job?Teaching young children to play a sport is so rewarding, every child that attends the club wants to be there, it's not like school! Working in a social environment is great.

What is great about New Malden? The Club off course. It's a family Club and you can play

all sorts of sports What would I change in New Malden?Maybe increase the variety of shopping in the High street so I didn't have to go into Kingston or shop online. If You didn't work here, where would you like to work and why?AMSAC sport centre in Albert Park, Melbourne Australia, 12 squash courts!!! Swimming pool, GP circuit!Describe the events in your typical day?Sorry I don't have a typical day, I can plan my day but it never goes to plan. Once I step into the Club…something will also crop up that I wasn’t expectingBest achievement in Sport?

Many years ago, I loved swimming so every win was brilliant. Now my main sport is squash, and in New Zealand in 2008 I won the bronze medal ( in my age group!) Standing on the podium with my medal round my neck, awesome feeling.... Probably felt the same as all our athletes in the latest Olympics. I have three England caps for the ladies squash Master team I have also represented Great Britain three times in South Africa.Favourite song?Ooooh. How about favourite sports person..... Daley Thompson, Dawn Fraser, James Wilstrop, met them all!

Probably the best investment marketing acronym of the past decade has to be the term BRIC or more recently BRICS with the addition of the S. As I am sure you know, this fashionable term stands for Brazil, Russia, India and China, and most recently South Africa managed to tack itself onto the end as

well. These countries were quite rightly being heralded as the next breakthrough nations and since the end of the developing nation crisis roughly in 2002, they have seen their economies burgeon in a dramatic manner. However, as all investors know, no investment or economic line continues on a constant growth trajectory. The growth stories with these nations were superb, and thus many considered that maybe it could be different this time and that such growth could continue unabated.

Well, as ever, it’s not different this time - the world has changed and all members of the BRICS economies have to adapt to a new environment. China has its new leadership and some key issues to address – primarily having to face a long-term shift away from an export-led economy towards a more domestically focused growth strategy. Compound that issue with an uncertain and somewhat opaque financial structure and add that to China’s aging population and a smaller youth base and the future is by no means as clear and certain as it looked a decade ago. Then look at Brazil, which under the guidance of the socialist President Lula, changed the international face of the country from a ‘sleeping giant’ with unreliable politicians, to a far more stable and steady developing nation. Sensible public finances and a flexible exchange rate boosted confidence levels among foreign investors not seen since the days of colonialism. However, most recently growth has fallen away and the change in leadership has led to a more domestically focused business attitude and discouraged inbound investors preferring to partner with more expensive and less efficient domestic suppliers. A classic example of this has been Petrobras which is a fast developing oil producer and should be adding to the strength of the economy, but instead has shown inefficiencies and cracks in recent times.

Now Russia. Surely a country with such huge resources means that its economic strength has to be assured, especially with a ‘firm’ centrally controlled government keeping a close eye on apparently just about everything! In the past, the almost endemic corruption scared foreign investors off – and realistically, the backhanders will not have stopped. The return of Mr Putin is also unlikely to instill a sense of political progress and change. Nevertheless, the current account is in surplus, Russia has a roughly balanced budget, and some of the largest oil and gas producers in the world are very cheap compared to elsewhere. The problems with Russia as a place to invest are still very apparent – there is a reason it is still an emerging market – but these very problems also lead to some sectors looking very attractive. India runs itself in its own way and seems very different from the other BRICS members. Running a budget deficit rather than a surplus, this great country should be admired for being able to operate as the world’s largest democracy, but seems unable to shake off its pervasive inefficiencies of overbearing regulation, and chronic infrastructural challenges which were so appallingly illustrated with the wide power outages earlier in the year. Finally, let’s add South Africa to the list and here the well documented problems of mining companies often serve to cover some of the underlying economic tensions amongst the broader population. Although the legal structures and corruption are seen to be lower than the others, recent actions over the strikes and strikers have

done little to inspire confidence. So what can we draw from this changing picture? Firstly, fashionable marketing acronyms give little guidance for good investing, and in fact given the levels of corruption and sleaze in these nations, investors should take clear account of this when seeking homes for their investment monies. I would urge many investors who don’t have the access to reliable business news flow that they shouldn’t heedlessly take risks of direct investment into such unreliable areas - there are also opportunities to invest in the needs of those nations. The FTSE100 has many constituents which are in or from such areas, or at the very least carry substantial trade with them. You don’t have to take that level of risk yourself but probably use the expertise of those focusing on such areas to better understand the really valuable and feasible investments. VVoice

Adult Beginner’s Running CoursesStarting 9th JanuaryLike all good stories, there has to be a beginning and in the case of this story, it all started out in the offices of Richmond Council. For some time Richmond Council had been promoting ‘Adult Beginner’s Running Courses’, the idea being to get people with static athletic mobility to be able to run without stopping for three miles. The courses took place over an eight week period and were led by the qualified coaches at Ranelagh Harriers Running Club. The courses had been going for several years and become oversubscribed, and Sheen Shufflers were invited to also host one of the courses in 2006. Sheen Shufflers continued to host these courses until 2011. However, there is a downside to this particular success story in that Richmond Council for 2012 dropped the courses from their itinery and left the two running clubs to it. So, in January 2012, Sheen Shufflers started their own ‘Adult Beginner’s Running Course’ which attracted an initial four ladies; a journalist, a community matron and two mums with children in school. All four runners passed the course with flying colours, and one of the ladies has now competed in two races, an off-road 7k race in Bushy Park and a six mile cross country slog in a league fixture for Sheen Shufflers! So, is there a sporting life after the course has finished? Well, you can carry on running, or in a couple of cases, take up another sport you’ve always fancied doing but felt too embarrassed to try. It is a lot easier to participate in a new sport if you are fit. In the case of running, Sheen Shufflers started a Friday morning section three years ago which meet every Friday at 9:50am at Pembroke Lodge car park and run for anywhere between three and four miles, the routes being throughout Richmond Park and sometimes down to the Thames towpath at Ham. Believe it or not, we even have runs where we break into the run to feed the ducks, either in Isabella Plantation or down by the river. And yes, not everybody is the same standard, but most of the runners just enjoy the freedom the running brings them, and most certainly do their share of chatting on the way round, turning it into a ‘sociathletic’ run! There are also Monday and Wednesday evening sessions in Richmond Park (7:30pm), even during the winter months, if you can’t make a morning run. With a fabulous facility like Richmond Park on our doorsteps, why waste the opportunity to make more of it!

The next ‘Adult Beginner’s Running Course’ commences on Wednesday 9th January 2013 from 10am from the car park of Pembroke Lodge, Richmond Park TW10 5HX. There is a charge of £40 for the eight week course to cover expenditure. Friday Morning Running Group – just turn up at Pembroke Lodge car park in Richmond Park at 09:50 any Friday morning. For more information on either the Running Course or the Friday running group, I can be reached on 07936 240937 or at [email protected] VVoice

HealthThe skinny on weight loss surgeryThe decision to undergo weight loss surgery should never be taken lightly. It means major surgery with life altering implications. However, there is no doubting the ability of weight loss surgery to change lives for the better. For many people it means that they are able to embark upon a more active lifestyle, return to work and improve their sense of self-worth.

However, it is vital to visit a responsible and experienced centre for Bariatric (weight loss) care when considering a surgical option. The procedures are not straightforward and complications, when encountered, can be serious. It

is also extremely important to have the correct standard of care both before and after surgery to allow for psychological aspects to be properly addressed. St. Anthony’s Hospital is a major provider of weight loss surgery, with some of the country’s foremost surgeons. The service is fully supported by counselling and dietician services and experienced bariatric nurses. The hospital is also equipped with an 8-bed intensive care unit, meaning that any unforeseen complications can be handled safely.

Wrap up for winterby Pippa GreenwoodWinter is upon us and even if you think that it can’t become any colder, the lowest temperatures are likely yet to come. Even hardy British plants will suffer in particularly miserable weather so whether your garden is already covered in snow and ice, or simply a slight frosting, it’s time to make sure that it’s wrapped up warm.Plants in containers are particularly vulnerable to winter damage as their roots are not protected beneath the soil. If the garden soil isn’t frozen solid, plunge any pot that can be plunged. If it’s too heavy to move then wrap it up well in bubble wrap polythene or old curtains. Most shrubs and trees in your garden will be ‘hardy’ in the UK, but if very harsh weather is forecast or there has been a spell of mild weather which may have encouraged the plant to produce some soft, new growth, then drape a double layer of horticultural fleece over the top growth of the plants and anchor it well.A double fleece layer can of course be used on plants in beds and borders too. Weigh down the edges of the fleece well with bricks, or use metal pegs at intervals along its length. Larger individual plants in borders can be given good, individual protection if you use four sturdy canes to create a framework, wrap with netting or chicken wire and fill the central space around the plant with dry bracken, straw or leaves. Many wall shrubs are grown there because they aren’t the hardiest of plants. To reduce risk of damage, make a similar ‘cage’ of mesh around these and again fill it with dry material so that the plant inside remains snug. Make sure you don’t use materials that can’t ‘breathe’ or the plants will deteriorate.Evergreens in containers and in open ground may suffer from drought as well as foliage or stem growth. Deep mulch applied to the soil surface on the root area before the ground becomes frosted will help immensely. Even hardy fruit trees are prone to damage. Although quite tough, the newly opened blossom and the buds themselves may be damaged, with late frosts being most harmful because the buds are further developed. A fleece cover will help here too. If you live in a particularly cold area, buy them from a local specialist nursery who know local conditions and try to buy late flowering varieties. If your garden is windy, try investing in some fleecy jackets for your favourite shrubs. These are made from fleece and are like massive bags, complete with a drawstring at the open end. Alternatively use a double layer of ordinary fleece, wrap it around and cut to size before clipping or tying in place.Outdoor taps and pipework will need protection too or

could result in burst pipes and expensive bills. I suggest turning outside taps off at the mains, but if this isn’t feasible, make sure any exposed pipework is properly insulated. Your local builder’s merchant or DIY store is worth a visit for this job - well insulated pipes and garden taps could save you a fortune.Visit www.pippagreenwood.com for some great gift ideas and items for your garden, including signed copies of Pippa’s books, hand-made terracotta herb planters and wall plaques, cloches, pop-up plant cloches, raised bed kits, ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ Gift Cards, heated propagators and lots more! The Life ListA Canine ConundrumSometimes empty nest syndrome strikes. We miss that joyful chaos in the mornings and may even yearn for the pitter-patter of tiny feet. Why not opt for tiny pads? We’ve had a 7000 year-old best friendship and here’s what you need to know...

The best part about having a pet dogAn easy friend to get presents for: a stick, an old bone, or the ball that’s been stuck in the drawer for two months.Someone to blame for unexpected wind. “Ooh, bad doggie...”A portable, 24-hour waste disposal unit - recycling on the go.A loyal friend who never reveals your secrets, including the Sunday ‘walk’ to the pub for an hour. They’ll keep you fit - chasing after them.No more cat poo in the garden.Always pleased to see you no matter how indifferent, irate or drunk you are.

The worst part about having a pet dogWhat goes in must come out, usually in front of strangers when the last poo bag is ripped.Doors and furniture, unlike the

backs of ears, do not need to be scratched.

Doggie breath, when you least expect it.The, ahem, cleaning routine. Now you know why your mum never let a dog lick

your face when you were young.Dog poos in the garden are bigger than next door’s cat poos used to be.

As it never speaks, your dog may appear smarter than you are.

AlphaThe Value of Asking Tough QuestionsOne of the best things about living in a democracy is possessing the freedom to put tough questions to those in power. From ‘Prime Minister’s Questions’ to TV’s ‘Question Time’ we see, on a weekly basis, the importance of such questions in making sure that our politicians are held to account. This is where the freedom of programmes like ‘Have I Got News for You’ to mock and poke fun at those in power is also vital. It enshrines the crucial principle, denied within tyrannies, for people to question and debate the actions and claims of those who would govern and control us. But precisely the same principle should apply to any system making ultimate claims about truth. At the heart of Christianity is the claim that, two thousand years ago, the God who created this world, acted in Jesus Christ to change it forever and that the path to having ‘life to the full’, is found through following him. This is a huge claim, however, and one that demands searching questions rather than uncritical acceptance. Just as with our politicians, it is only when tough questions are allowed and indeed encouraged, that the truth claims within Christianity can be examined to see whether they really stack up. This is the whole point of the Alpha Course. Rather than shying away from such questions, it’s an invitation from the Christian church to anyone and everyone to put Christianity under the spotlight and ask the tough questions that its claims demand. Both Christ Church, New Malden and New Malden Baptist Church have run the Alpha Course over several years attended by good numbers of people. Many of these have been previously unconnected with church. Each evening starts with a meal which provides the opportunity for guests to relax and get to know each other. This is then followed by a talk and then the all important time in groups where those vital questions are raised and discussed. The principle upon which Alpha is based is that if the claims of Christianity are in any way true, they must be open to the most searching critique. From ‘How can a God of love allow suffering?’

to ‘Isn’t the Church just an inward looking self-interest group?’ such questions are vital to ask of the Christian faith.

So if you like asking searching questions and want the opportunity to ask them of the Christian faith, the Alpha Course is for you! The next Alpha Course in New Malden starts at Christ Church on

Tuesday 22nd January running up until Tuesday 26th March. Each evening runs from 7.45 pm until 9.55 pm

and is completely free, although guests can make a contribution to the cost of the meal if they wish. If you would like to attend, please contact Christ Church Parish Office on 0208 942 0915 or Stephen Kuhrt on 0208 942 2523. Whatever you believe, you will be completely welcome. Especially if you have tough questions to ask of the Christian faith and how it can possibly make this claim that, through Jesus Christ,

we can gain ‘life to the full’! Stephen Kuhrt, Vicar of Christ Church, New Malden VVoice

How many people remember the bombs in Malden High Street? One outside what is now McDonalds, another outside the Railway Inn near the station (I went down in the crater looking for shrapnel), also another behind the fire station. The last four houses at the far end of Cambridge Road were flattened. My friend lived there but survived, he was called Les Wilson and stayed with us for a time. I still have a map of where the bombs fell. Mother and I queued up for 1½ hours to see Snow White and the seven dwarfs” at the Odeon Wimbledon. Films were our best entertainment before TV and the internet. The Odeon at Shannon Corner was another favourite place. Our meals in those days consisted of porridge or bread and milk for breakfast, Spam, maybe rabbit or horsemeat/whalemeat or soup for lunch. Mainly, bread and jam for tea, or as a special treat a kunzel cake. Birthday parties were unheard of, and in our Xmas stockings, maybe an orange, sweets and

Malden MemoriesPatrick Denison sometimes a tin toy. Most of our shoes and clothes

came from second-hand shops. I remember the squeaky floorboards in BHS in Kingston (now Millets), and as I love music we went down Brady’s Arcade in Eden Street to look for second-hand 45rpm records. I still have a Chris Barber jazz record. The other place was in Clarence Street near Bentalls, the music shop had listening booths so you could play the record before buying. On the corner, Bentalls had a series of mirrors, if you leaned over a rail, you could see at least four of you. The (cattle) market had sheep and other animals in it. Nearer home, I remember walking in front of Dads Austin 7 with a torch in the thick fog, guiding him along Kingston Road to the Fountain. I had a ride in a Bren gun carrier in Wimbledon Common, where the army had an assault course. Our house had its iron railings taken away as did many others. I don’t think they made a Spitfire out of them. We would often cross the By-Pass at the traffic lights on South Lane. At Shannon Corner, we would turn left at the lights, drive 200 yards, and wait in the middle of the road to fork right to Colliers Wood. The flyover is a great improvement.

Mum used to save odd bits of soap, put them in a handheld cage, and shake it in the water for washing up; also she used a wooden mushroom to darn our socks. Dad’s army sewing kit was called a “housewife”. To repair a hole in a saucepan, we bought a pot mender, which consisted of two washers (steel), a cork washer, and a nut and bolt, with the cork on the inside. At school, we had a third of a pint of milk each day. The size of our class on average was 48; I went to Burlington Road School first, then to Beverley in Blakes lane. During playtime 4 or 6 boys would line up away from a wall, and then we would leap over their backs, and see how many we could get on. No health and safety then. The clay pit in Blagdon Road was a favourite place to play cowboys and Indians. I remember trolley buses turning round at the Fountain. Trams in Wimbledon had moveable back on the seats; the conductor pushed them over ready for the return journey. I am glad that the Surrey Comet and other papers are smaller and much better to handle. I still have the four copies of the Village Magazine (the one before the Village Voice). I remember the fireman using the practice tower next to the town hall (now Waitrose). Now, a bit about my life during the time in Malden. My first job at the age of 14 was at Smiths bookstall

in Surbiton station. I was paid 13s 6d a week, and I was there for 3 months. It was a long way to cycle for a 6am start. After a few more jobs, I joined the RAF as a flight mechanic (engines) for 10 years (Sept 1946- 1956) including two tours in Singapore. Then a few jobs later as a building plant fitter and crane driver. I finally returned to aircraft by working at Vickers for 3½ years, building the landing gear of the VC10. In 1966 I went to BOAC/BA at Heathrow as a fitter and later an aircraft engineer, and retired after 25 years on 1991. Since then, I volunteered to work on the Concorde, and also build the AV Roe Flying Machine with fourteen others at Brooklands Museum. VVoice

SURBITON,

NEW MALDEN,

Please call Anna on 0208 873 7441visit www.buggyfit.com or www.mumsinshape.co.uk

or email: [email protected]

I had my first baby in June, and expected to find the transition from working full time in London to being at home with a baby difficult. My plan for coping was to keep busy, and in this area we are fortunate to have a wide range of baby activities to choose from. One of these is buggy fit. It was on my list of things to try, but I did not expect to enjoy it. I was never a fan of PE at school and would always choose to work out alone at the gym rather than go to classes. However, buggy fit has been a surprise hit. Every Tuesday, come rain or shine, we bounce out of bed and speed walk to the park to exercise with a group of other mums. Anna is the perfect combination of friendly and bossy, and keeps us moving and motivated. What's great about buggy fit is that you can have a good workout without worrying about leaving the baby. Whenever the little ones grumbly Anna gets us moving to settle them, or sings to them whilst we charge up the hill, for once without the buggies.

The camaraderie that you get from exercising with other mums in the fresh air is great, and we often go for coffee afterwards (although not a latte, Anna says they're the equivalent of a chocolate bar!). As one of my friends said, "It's the highlight of my week". I'm pleased to say that I'm loving my time at home with the baby. Now that she's 6 months old I'm planning to try some different activities in the new year, but not on Tuesday mornings, that slot's taken. VVoice

Time to change your mattress? Most people sleep on it and

pay the price. A tired mattress can leave you feeling just as tired too

By Sandra Haynes

Is your mattress over 7 years old, saggy or just

not as comfortable as it used to be? Putting off replacing it can lead to disturbed sleep, morning tiredness, stiff neck and back ache. In fact, it’s the main reason for lack of sleep for most people – they just don’t realize it. Buying a new mattress might seem like an expense you can manage without but it’s one of the most valuable things you can do to improve your health and general well being.

What happens to your old mattress over time?

The main problem is deteriorating support. Over time, the springs inside your mattress lose their fi rmness so they start to sag under

your weight. Eventually they become so weakened they retain your shape creating dips and hollows across the surface of the mattress. It’s this unevenness and lack of support that causes the body to toss and turn during the night. The lumpier it gets the more disturbed sleep you’re likely to get.

The benefi ts of a new mattress to you

● You’ll sleep much better for longer● Fall asleep quicker and far easier ● Wake up feeling far more refreshed● Aches and pains will simply fade away● Well rested you’ll feel happier in yourself ● You’ll fi nd you have that much more energy● Handle the stresses of the day much more easily

Right now, you’ll PAY LESS to regain a good nights sleep with our EXTRA DISCOUNT SPECIAL OFFER!

Take this luxury Visco Pocket Memory Foam Mattress for example.

The very latest in mattress design, it uses

a combination of pressure relieving memory foam and

the fi nest pocket springs for the most comfortable and

restful night’s sleep of your life. Not only that as you can see from

Ginger’s Music Fun offers independent baby and toddler music classes in Worcester Park. Inspired by the world-renowned Suzuki music education method it combines oriental philosophy with European nursery rhymes and classical pieces. The class involves singing, doing movements with classical music, circle songs, playing fun percussion instruments and more. Music plays an important role in children’s development. Experts agree that music can strengthen childrens’ minds and boost their brain power. While participating in musical activities, children are also enhancing physical, language, social-emotional, and cognitive development. Studies have found a correlation between music abilities and academic achievement. Participation in music at an early age can help improve a child’s learning ability and memory by stimulating different patterns of brain development. As children create music, they improve

fine motor skills, coordination and rhythm. When they dance to music, they also increase flexibility and motor skills. To introduce music to your child, you can:• bring your children, whatever their age, to baby or child music activities.• play all kinds of music in the background while your child is playing, eating or sitting in the car. • encourage your little one to clap, tap or move together with the beat.

• make easy musical instruments with your child such as shakers or rain sticks.• discuss music with your child: is it loud or soft, high or low, fast or slow?• take your child to concerts and musical outreach programmes such as those at Royal Festival Hall, the Barbican centre and the Wigmore Hall.Come along to our music and movement classes for babies and pre-schoolers and find out why our members say it’s the highlight of their week. Safer Neighbourhoods Help us to help you prevent burglaryYour local neighbourhood watch schemes for Beverley Ward and Coombe Vale are mature schemes which are well supported by local residents. However, as with any maturing operation, we are now developing gaps in terms of local coordinators for some of our local roads. We are specifically looking for support in Coombe Vale where some of our long serving residents have moved on or retired. Neighbourhood Watch serves an important role in local policing as our ‘ears and ears’ on the ward and in terms of keeping immediate neighbours informed of issues and opportunities. The role is not onerous but it is helpful if potential coordinators have access to emails. If anyone is interested please contact me on the details below. In the meantime, with the darker nights still upon us, can I leave you with some guidance on safe travelling.

Personal security on darker nightsEven in a city as busy and crowded as London, and busy town centre’s such as Kingston and New Malden, incidents of mugging and pickpocketing are still quite low. Knowing how and where criminals who commit these crimes operate will help you avoid falling victim to them.Thieves frequently operate:• at tube stations • at cash machines • in car parks • around bus stations • in overcrowded areas, especially at rush hour. Be aware and keep your possessions safe:Never leave your bags or other valuables unattended in public places. Be discreet with your belongings; displaying expensive jewellery or electronic devices, like mobile phones or cameras, could attract unwanted attention. Don’t make your mobile phone a moving target. Don’t tempt mobile phone thieves and be aware when making a call. Reduce the risk of mobile phone theft by following these simple tips: Don’t leave your phone on tables in pubs or restaurants. When you leave a train or tube station don’t use your phone immediately, leave it a while. Don’t walk and text at the same time, you will be less aware of what is happening around you. Keep calls in public places as brief as possible, the longer you talk, the more likely you are to be spotted by a potential thief.

Looks good enough to grabBe aware of chain-snatch thieves and keep your jewellery

out of sight. Snatch robberies can involve violence or theft. The chance that this will ever happen to you is quite small, but you should be aware of what you can do to keep yourself and your property safe:• Make sure your jewellery is not visible. • Plan your journey in advance. • Avoid dark or deserted areas late at night. • Be aware of your surroundings and stay alert to what’s going on around you. If you have any information on stolen goods, report it to the police by calling 101. If it is an emergency dial 999. A reminder of our opening times here at CI Tower, Monday - Friday 12.30pm - 5.30pmSaturday 10.30am - 3.30pmSunday - ClosedOn a final note, I hope that you and your families have a happy and crime start to 2013.Many thanks,Nicholas ELLIS PS 46VK Beverley & Coombe Vale Safer Neighbourhoods Teams VVoice

I do think New Year’s resolutions can’t technically be expected to begin on New Year’s Day, don’t you? Since, because it’s an extension of New Year’s Eve, smokers are already on a smoking roll and cannot be expected to stop abruptly on the stroke of midnight with so much nicotine in the system. Also dieting on New Year’s Day isn’t a good idea as you can’t eat rationally but really need to be free to consume whatever is necessary, moment by moment, in order to ease your hangover. I think it would be much more sensible if resolutions began generally on January the second. Helen Fielding Bridget Jones Diary

I have to admit to finding New Year’s Eve a bit of a let down. It’s supposed to be the biggest night of the year – “tonight we’re going to party like its nineteen ninety nine” and all that. Was it only me whose teenage age years were spent trying to find a party, any party to go to? Now it means trying desperately to stay awake until midnight; fumbling with radio to find Big Ben’s chimes and succeeding, ten seconds to late and then being kept awake by all those fireworks (its not bonfire night for goodness sake!). As for Auld Langs Syne, does anyone, except Robert Burns, know the words let alone know what they mean? No, not even the Scots who supposedly own the patent on Hogmanay celebrations. Then there are those resolutions. Have you decided to make a New Year’s Resolution? If so, then you are in good company. Apparently seven millions of us make a New Year’s Resolution, with half of us making the same resolution every year (On average, we will fail in sticking to the same resolution a disappointing four times); the most popular ones being: 1) take more exercise (70% of resolutions); 2) lose weight and eat more healthily (60%); 3) cut down on alcohol (30%); 4) give up smoking (25%). Why do we bother? We all know how long it takes to break one - about the time it takes to top up the glass you used to toast the New Year (see 3.) but before you make the next resolution you know you will break – “never again”. (What is it about hangovers these days? They used to last until Football Focus, now they hang around until when its time for Match of The Day – and that’s the Sunday morning edition.) Why do we do so badly? Twenty five percent us break our New Years’ Resolutions within a week, although January

9th is apparently the day most people will give up. A study by the University of Hertford suggested that New Year’s resolutions doomed to failure as most people focus on downside of not achieving goals. Richard Wiseman, the psychologist at the University of Hertfordshire, who led the research, warns that making resolutions at the last minute can backfire because such

decisions tend to be less genuinely motivated. “If you do it on the spur of the moment, it probably doesn’t mean that much to you and you won’t give it your all. People who kept their resolutions tended to have broken their goal into smaller steps and rewarded themselves when they achieved one of these. They also told their friends about their goals, focused on the benefits of success and kept a diary of their progress. Given my dismal personal failure of willpower in the face of the usual suspects, (see list above plus my own personal favourites - I will not be grumpy or shout at the kids) I’ve decided to resolve that this year I will not be making any resolutions.
