Dear Tom

I would like to start by saying a big thank you. Myself & Margaret are incredibly happy with theoutcome of our new kitchen. From the verybeginning of the job to the very end your help, advice and knowledge I believe made all thedifference to a perfect finish. We can’t believe the transformation from how it looked before to how it looks now. I can honestly say I have never met a builder who takes such pride in his work. I also didn’t think I would ever meet a builder who is more fussy than the customer themselves. Thank you to all your team who were always polite, thoughtful & professional.

I will of course always be using TSD to carry out all our future work & will always with great pleasure recommend you to friends, family & potential customers.

Best Regards

Dear All, The Winter’s barely behind us and plans are already well underway for this year’s Malden Fortnight which will ‘kick off’ on 6th July. The website www.maldenfortnight.co.uk is updated as and when events are confirmed. Many of the ‘old favourites’ will be featuring in the festivities, as well as some new events. So, if your club, organisation (or just you!) would like to get involved, then why not take a look at our site and start popping some of the key dates into your diary. One regular feature of the Fortnight has already had a revamp for 2013. Instead of inviting children to design the official poster, we will be asking our local junior school pupils to create a new look logo. There’s more information online along with details of our exciting incentive to enter: a £50 prize for the the winner along with £75 for their school! In other news....we’re really hoping to see another great turnout at our next ‘Market on the Square’ (Saturday 6 April). You can read more about the success of the March market on page 7. And, if you’re still looking for some more local retail therapy later in the month, you might also want to pop along to the Craft Fair to be held at the Methodist Church on 28th April (see page 21 for more details). As ever, I’m delighted to see that our “Clubs and What’s On” pages are still getting so many submissions. If you run a group or a regular event (or are perhaps thinking of starting one) then please do get in touch. As long as it’s held on a not-for-profit basis, the entries on our community pages are free of charge.

And finally, thank you to all my lovely readers who’ve been encouraging me on my recent running ‘journey’. Last week I completed my first 5km run – without stopping or falling over! As you may have read, I started a beginners running group in January run by local club, The Sheen Shufflers in Richmond Park (as well as using a training app on my iphone a couple of times a week). The plan is that from running in just one minute intervals (a struggle at the beginning, trust me) your body is gradually trained to run 5km. And believe it or not, it actually works! So if you’ve been deliberating about getting active for Spring by using a similar and gentle approach to building up your fitness levels, I’d really recommend looking into this programme. As the weather (hopefully) starts to improve, I look forward to seeing lots of you out and about, perhaps along the High Street, at our local parks or at one of our forthcoming events. And, don’t forget to give me a wave if you see me pounding the streets of New Malden! I’m even starting to enjoy my runs now so can usually manage a smile....Jenny Stuart, Editor & publisherP.S. So remember, please mention the Village Voice when replying to adverts and get in touch by 17th April if you’d like your business, Club or event to feature in the May edition.

Market on the Square 6th April 9am-2pmEarlier last year the Community of New Malden Businesses (CNMB) along with some interested local people decided that it would be great to try to bring a farmers market to New Malden. The idea grew and we staged a Christmas market on Saturday 1st December as a trial for a more regular market. St Georges Square was the venue and our thanks must go to CLS Holdings for allowing this to happen. New Malden’s Farmer’s Market : The Market on the SquareBy Yee-Liu WilliamsIt’s Saturday 2nd March, 11.00 am, the first Saturday of the month and a new Farmer’s Market has arrived in New Malden. The monthly ‘Market on the Square’ is the place to buy your organic breads, naturally reared meats, home-made pies, fresh fruit and veg, cakes and all those delectable produce from local traders. Add a merry band of talented home-based ‘foody’ entrepreneurs and you have as one of the stallholders commented: ‘”The busiest and best Farmer’s Market I have been to in a long time”. On this Saturday morning, local residents came out in steady droves to brave the biting cold wind to nibble and taste; to peruse and buy off laden tables. Us, the New Malden people were easily persuaded into buying the homemade and organic wholesome foods. As I chatted to Nikki McGibbon (Groves Residential) one of the main campaigners for ‘Market on the Square’ I asked: ‘What are your aspirations for the market? ‘New Malden is a magnet for young families and professionals benefitting from the good schools and transport links into London. In an area where residential prices remain fairly buoyant, despite recession, we hope the Market will be the start of and encourage new business development into the area’. As I wandered around the marketplace, I met Frances one of the New Malden ‘market makers’ in high spirits and keen to ensure everything was running smoothly. A group of hungry Korean teenagers hovered around Korea Foods with a demeanour of polite respect waiting to savour the fried dumplings. You could be forgiven for thinking you had wandered into a quaint enclave of Korean suburbia. New Malden is a strange mix where East meets West and well-known for its Korean community. Closer to home, young families and embracing couples appeared more tempted by the walnut and raisin loaf, rye breads and range of other artisan breads (Celtic Bakers); Italian olives, sundried tomatoes and vine leaves (Olive and Things); smoked Swiss mackerel pate and spicy sausages (The Swiss Food Company) and old-fashioned lemon drizzle and tangy carrot slices (Lake Thomas Cakes). Mingling between the stalls, the Freedom Pass generation seemed happy

enough to potter, sip freshly ground hot coffee (Chicos) and gossip over the latest scandals of the week. As I approached the organic butcher’s stall I observed: ‘I can see business has been good for you today’. I made a bid for one of the last two remaining steak and kidney pies on a now bare table. A voice from behind whispers: ‘You know you’re getting real meat when you buy from (The Real Butchers).’ I smirked at the topical comment and the very ‘best of British’ outlook from a steadfast customer. A rather feel- good realisation swept over me that the Market on the Square is likely to be a keenly anticipated event. The intermittent waft of sweet mulled wine and a rather mouth-watering piece of sea bass (Pimpernel Fisheries) proved far too tempting as I rummaged yet again for my purse.

My Top 3 Recommendations :The Swiss Food Company (Paul and Tessa) – Smoked Mackerel Pate! The Real Butchers (Lawrence and Anne) – Steak and Kidney Pie.Lake Thomas Cakes (Shanaz) – Lemon Drizzle Slice.By Yee-Liu Williams VVoice

Time to change your mattress? Most people sleep on it and

pay the price. A tired mattress can leave you feeling just as tired too

By Sandra Haynes

Is your mattress over 7 years old, saggy or just

not as comfortable as it used to be? Putting off replacing it can lead to disturbed sleep, morning tiredness, stiff neck and back ache. In fact, it’s the main reason for lack of sleep for most people – they just don’t realize it. Buying a new mattress might seem like an expense you can manage without but it’s one of the most valuable things you can do to improve your health and general well being.

What happens to your old mattress over time?

The main problem is deteriorating support. Over time, the springs inside your mattress lose their fi rmness so they start to sag under

your weight. Eventually they become so weakened they retain your shape creating dips and hollows across the surface of the mattress. It’s this unevenness and lack of support that causes the body to toss and turn during the night. The lumpier it gets the more disturbed sleep you’re likely to get.

The benefi ts of a new mattress to you

● You’ll sleep much better for longer● Fall asleep quicker and far easier ● Wake up feeling far more refreshed● Aches and pains will simply fade away● Well rested you’ll feel happier in yourself ● You’ll fi nd you have that much more energy● Handle the stresses of the day much more easily

Right now, you’ll PAY LESS to regain a good nights sleep with our EXTRA DISCOUNT SPECIAL OFFER!

Take this luxury Visco Pocket Memory Foam Mattress for example.

The very latest in mattress design, it uses

a combination of pressure relieving memory foam and

the fi nest pocket springs for the most comfortable and

restful night’s sleep of your life. Not only that as you can see from

New Malden HistorySowing the seeds of discontent by Robin GillEdwin Gale was an experienced gardener born in Kingston in 1837 who had returned to the area in 1870 taking up residence in Kingston Road near to the Duke Of Wellington pub, before relocating to Cambridge Road. He took it upon himself to approach the vicar of Christ Church Rev Charles Stirling with an idea to form a local Horticultural Association. This was in September 1871, it had only been the previous year, that there had been amazing scenes at Christ Church School in Lime Grove over its use outside of educational purposes. This climaxed when the vicar together with others, made a forcible entry into the building driving out members of the Building Committee of the Local District Board. This in turn led to a breakaway movement from the Established Church, and the formation of the Holy Trinity Free Church (which stood on the site of the former Graham Spicer Institute in Malden Road). So , there was a great deal of ill feeling within our small village of 1641 inhabitants, and any societies formed at the time, seem to have been drawn up upon

similar lines. Mr Gale’s meeting with the vicar met with encouragement for his venture, and arranged a meeting in Lime Grove on 16th January 1872 which was attended by eight locals, including five gardeners.

Which society? Mr Jacob Moorman from Sycamore Grove was one of these men, and was initially asked to help form an agricultural society, and then a chrysanthemum society, before settling on a horticultural society. The society would “promote the cultivation of flowers, fruits and vegetables amongst amateurs, cottagers, and gardeners” and be called the “New Malden, Coombe, and District Horticultural and Cottage Garden Society.” A resolution was passed and a circular (flyer) drawn up and approved. A further meeting was to be held on 6th February at the schoolhouse in Poplar Grove after the circular had been distributed to every inhabitant in the village likely to be interested. The meeting attracted about twenty six of the locals, and Mr John Woollacott was elected treasurer and, Mr Moorman Secretary. A committee was elected to draw up the rules of the society, and another meeting was set for 9th February again at the school in Poplar Grove. This was when difficulties arose, the committee was refused access to the premises to hold its meeting, and Mr Moorman was asked to not hold any gathering that night. Strangely enough, another meeting was held at the school in Lime Grove that evening where, another group was formed called “The Coombe, New Malden, and adjacent districts Horticultural and Cottage Garden Association”. Mr Gale, who was the original founder of the idea, aligned himself to this second society and the two groups set about organising separate flower shows for the summer.

Page 14: New Malden’s Village Voice April 2013

Growing painsThe first of these was Mr Moormans society, which was held in a field lent by Mr Horlick of Hoppingwood Farm on Tuesday 12th July. Three marquees were set up, with a further tent for the cottagers’ produce. As far as the professional gardeners were concerned the majority of prizes were presented to Mr Crafter who worked for Rev William Finch of Woodlands Kingston Hill, but mention should be made of Thomas Whittingham of Poplar Grove who won first prize for his eighteen cut roses. Mr Moorman who was gardener to the Christy family at Coombe Bank won prizes for his strawberries and vegetables. The amateur prizes were dominated by Benjamin Looker of Kingston Hill (who was to build a clay works in Blagdon Road) who

took the honours in geraniums, roses, and assorted vegetables, and George Pilgrim of Acacia Grove with his fruit. William Sleet a platelayer from Surbiton won eight prizes for his fruit and vegetables in the artisan class, the Noakes children from Grafton Road were successful with their grasses and wild flowers. The ladies did not miss out, with prizes to the Misses Lookers for their table decoration and bouquets. After the award ceremony, the organising committee and judges had dinner at the Malden Tavern where during his speech Mr Woollacott mentioned his regret that there were two societies and hoped that an amalgamation could soon take place. Two weeks later, the second flower show was held at the school in Lime Grove. The venue was found to be too small for the number of entries and some late comers had to be turned away. All of the professional gardening prizes went to Thomas Hudson Bowler who was head gardener to John Sim of Coombe House, whilst the cottagers’ prizes mainly were awarded to Mr Robert Hill Of Kingston Road for his roses and stocks. Prizes outside of the competition included best kept garden won by Mr Packer of Providence Place (Grafton Road). The president of the society Rev Stirling in his speech hoped that the two societies would not run in parallel but would join together.

A perennial problem Unfortunately, the following year, there were still two separate societies so again there were two shows. The first (Mr Mooreman) was held in a field by the railway station again lent by Mr Horlick. Mr Crafter again dominated the professional gardeners contest winning firsts for his fuchsias, coleus, calceolaria, achimenes, gloxinias, and geraniums. George Pilgrim (Acacia Grove) took the honours amongst residents of Malden with his flowers fruit and vegetables, whilst amongst the “working class” John Povey (who was to become the first undertaker in the village) dominated with his vegetables and fruits. One large marquee plus the newly built institute accommodated the produce, and a special showing of ferns from the gardens of Polydore De Keyser was widely acclaimed.A meal was again laid on at the Malden Tavern, and Mr Woollacott chairman of the society once more, expressed the wish that the two societies could amalgamate. He wondered what others outside the village, thought of a place so small having two so similar associations, and he knew that while the situation continued some major exhibitors would contribute to neither society. But, the following week the second society held its summer show. Once more held at the schools in Lime Grove, with the professional gardeners’ exhibits at the

girls’ school, and others in the boys’ school. The staging came from many sources including The Railway Tavern (now The Glasshouse). The cottagers display attracted most attention with the prizes split evenly throughout the entrants, where competition was close. Mr Richard Hill won many admirers for his flowers (especially roses). The professional gardeners also had a close contest with Mr Gale’s geraniums (gardener to Mr Atkins of Norbiton Lodge in Kingston Road), Mr Graham’s ferns (gardener to Mr de Keyser Hampton Wick) and Mr Rayner’s fuchsias (gardener at Riverbank also Hampton Wick) taking the honours. After the contest, Rev Stirling again expressed the wish that the two societies would become one, but felt there were hostile elements in the district who didn’t want that to happen.

Let bygones be bygonesThe spirit of reconciliation must have been strong, as the two societies did combine and the “New Malden Horticultural and Cottage Garden Society” came into being later that year and in July 1874 held their first exhibition in the grounds of Coombe House. The public were welcomed throughout the grounds of the estate. A large marquee had been erected for “flowers and foliage” and a smaller tent for table decorations and another for cottagers produce. Mr Crafter again triumphed in the contest for professional gardeners with firsts for exotic ferns, fuchsias, pelargoniums, achimenes, gloxinias, and begonias.Mr Langton and Mr Woodroffe shared the prizes for Malden residents, whilst Mr Povey was again successful with his vegetables and fruit in the labourers section.Mr Woollacott speaking after the prizes had been presented stated that they had met for the first time in a united capacity and were now happy and harmonious. He was now sure all their petty differences could be sorted out.“He who dares not grasp the thorn, should never crave the rose”

“Inspiration” – to stimulate (a person) to activity or creativity. Surely this must be the key word for any Chancellor when presenting his Budget to the nation. Good policies, ideas and concepts are all very well, but if they are not effectively

communicated to the real audience (us) then they will fail in their intention. So for the Budget this week, it is obviously too late for any further lobbying, but it is not too late to call for it to be delivered in such a way that it can attempt to

create the most important word for any economy and its Chancellor – confidence.Let’s be clear, it has been nearly half a decade since the financial crisis started and the economy still remains no larger than it was in 2006. We see an economy which, according to the official statistics, is seemingly flat lining - other than the odd nudge up or down. However, I would also contend that these statistics are not measuring things effectively and that there is in fact far more going on than is currently being evaluated. From start-ups to employment there are some very interesting trends, but little seems to filter through to the popular news and headlines. The Chancellor had hoped by now that the economy fireworks would at least be fizzing on the fuse, if not actually going off. After three budgets he was hoping for 7% growth by now, but unfortunately it’s only 2.4%. So standing around a wet firework with a packet of

damp matches doesn’t seem to be working very well. Time for a new firework and some new matches. Some of us of a certain age will recall the last time we so heavily relied upon monetary policy – in the earliest days of Mrs. Thatcher. Popular history is that the “lady was not for turning”, but of course she was, and she did. The difference then was that she was able to argue and lead her party and most (depending on how you counted them) of the voting populace in the right direction. I think it’s called leadership. So, time for a change? Well leaving political blushes aside, you could still do more than just doggedly stand on the barricades whilst the troops sweep past you. From tax reform to infrastructure, there are many actions that can be taken, but they also need to be made to be inspirational and aspirational -not just political. Wake up - it’s our country too! When you think of a Craft Fair, your first thought is probably programmes such as Midsummer Murder or Rosemary & Thyme. The old fashioned setting in the small village, with bunting and cakes and the village busybody! Craft Fairs are so much more than that. They are a chance to socialise in your community, spend time with the family and it gives people a chance to showcase their talent to others! Todays’ Craft Fairs have a range of sellers from the good ‘Olde’ Craft, to Gifts and Jewellery. There’s such a variety involved that it is a great place to go and look at what these amazing people can show you and sell to you! You don’t have to buy, but when you see what’s on offer, I’m sure you’ll be glad that you came!I have organised the ‘Ye Olde Craft Fair’ to bring back the community and have somewhere to go when it’s another rainy day (or not)! I have included a range of stalls for everyone whether your young or along in years! We’ll have face painting, beauty treatments, toys, gifts, food, jewellery, cards, books and more to

keep you entertained! If the kids and the men are happy, then the women will be too! The Fair will be held at the New Malden Methodist Church on Saturday 27th April from 130pm-5pm. The stalls will be in two of the halls and we also have the kitchen area where there will be refreshments. The Church is located on the High Street, so pop in, have some tea and cake, stroll around the stalls and get that ‘Olde’ Village feeling back. CommunityLocal resident Paul Bedforth has started an online and paper petition to try and get the council to reinstate dog-mess bins at each end of the pathway / bridge that links Alric and Dukes Avenue. The pathway, which is regularly used for the school run, is now littered with plastic dog - mess bags filled with dog faeces. Dog walkers regularly use the pathway to exercise their pets and are responsible enough to scoop their poop and put it in bags. However, the council removed the bins where they usually dispose of it. Instead they are now, either dumping it where the bins used to be or hurl it over the railings into the wildlife area created by the Water Board at the Alric Avenue end of the path.

‘It’s not an unusual occurrence to see plastic bags of poo hanging from the trees. It’s an eye sore and health hazard, not just for local residents but for the mums and kids who wheel their buggies through it or tramp in it on the way to school,’ said Paul. In one morning Paul and his team collected 57 signatures from concerned residents. If you would like to register your support for the reinstatement of these bins – you can do so online at http://epetition.kingston.public-i.tv/epetition_core/view/moredogbins VVoice

BeautyPucker Up - Make-Up Tricks for Kissable LipsSoft, plump, kissable lips are guaranteed to get you noticed - but if mother nature hasn’t blessed you with them, don’t despair, because we’ve compiled a clever guide that will help you to fake a full-on pout.

Soften UpBefore you even think about applying lipstick to your lips, it’s essential to spend a bit of time creating the right base for your product.Exfoliation is key in keeping your lips looking luscious as well as smooth and free of flakes, so it’s important to do this once a week.Start by applying a generous amount of lip balm to your lips to soften them, and then gently remove the top layer of skin using a soft wash cloth or toothbrush, in circular motions.Smother your lips in balm every night so that they are super soft for the next morning, when you apply your make-up.

Line UpAlthough lip pencil probably isn’t high up on your shopping list of beauty must-haves, when used correctly it can be an essential tool. It allows you to shape and define your lips, and helps to stop your lipstick from ‘bleeding’.Choosing a neutral and natural shade of lip liner is key for creating a modern look.Lining just outside the coloured part of your lips provides the fullest effect. Many women don’t do this, and tend to line inside the lip line, but this makes your lips appear thinner because the natural lip line generally extends further than the coloured part of your lips.Be sure to choose a soft lip liner and ‘round off’ the tip by smudging it on the back of your hand a few times - a sharpened point will look unnatural and harsh - before you apply.Define your ‘cupid’s bow’ by drawing a V in the centre curve of your top lip, bring the line round and down using soft feathery strokes. Line the curve of the bottom lip with the same light movements, and soften by lightly blending with your finger.

Complete with Colour It’s best to choose a natural shade of lip colour for two reasons: firstly, light and bright hues look youthful and secondly they make the lips appear fuller, unlike dark shades which have the opposite effect.Use a lip brush to paint the product onto your lips for a neat and even application - ensure that you take the colour right up to your lip liner line.

Get The GlossLip gloss is every girl’s best friend because it offers a lovely finish to otherwise dull lipsticks and can modernise your entire make-up look.Apply a shimmery gloss to the centre of your lips and blend gradually outwards to make your lips look really full. And, if you really want to make an impression with your pout, try one of the plumping glosses that are on the market. Using menthol, cinnamon or even chilli as active ingredients, these lip glosses create a mild irritation on contact with the lips causing them to temporarily increase in size. The tingling sensation lets you know it’s working and the results last for a few hours, so to keep the look you’ll need to re-apply regularly. chooks, I can take or leave eggs – don’t tell Anne though.) Back through the gate, at various times, come flowers, leeks, marmalade, gooseberries aplenty, different plant cuttings and apples. When our tiny greenhouse needed to come down because the supporting wall required structural work, we asked around and found a good home for it. Well, a good

garden actually. Three of us carried it up the lane in sections and two of us returned with rhubarb, fresh flowers, beetroot, runner beans, chard and the most delicious raspberries imaginable. Living greener, the value of a thing is not financial; it’s the use someone can make of it. Only once did we slightly blot our village copybook. Invited up to a carol service at the nearby chapel, we arrived late (mea culpa) and sat in the annexe close to the open door. Someone stuck their head through and politely insisted, as we were the only ones in the room, that we joined the throng next door. Unfortunately, the only seating left was up in the pulpit. Judging by the sea of faces below us, it was a mixed reception. It didn’t help that Anne had forgotten her glasses and I have a habit of singing too loudly at social occasions. We’ve cried off every year since as a mark of community respect. That ‘blip’ aside, our fellow villagers are very supportive of our endeavours – being green is nothing new after all, especially in the countryside. Wearing wellies to the shops, as you prefer to cut across the fields, and carrying back armfuls of kindling because it was too good an opportunity to waste, barely raises an eyebrow. And who doesn’t enjoy the sound of chickens in the morning? (Next door’s dog - that’s who.) Even our local builder got in on the act, turning up at 8am with a bag of mackerel, fresh off the boat, so he could teach me how to gut it. The cat really enjoyed the lesson, but I soon wished that I’d let my breakfast porridge settle a bit first. One villager, a carpenter, came to our rescue after the coat rack fell out of favour with the wall. It turned out that I’d managed to somehow miss both raw plugs when screwing it in – a personal best in DIY incompetence, which no doubt I will supersede at some point. “Well, we’re all good at something,” he told me, in a voice that suggested I really ought to find out just what that is. By Derek Thompson VVoice

Our village is a society in miniature. There are helpers and hinderers, alliances, conflicts and the occasional historical feud, all in a state of flux. Think Emmerdale, minus the glamour. But also, in amongst the intrigue and entertainment, for the dedicated Better Lifer there is a wealth of knowledge, experience and produce. It’s less to do with any formal notion of exchange, and more about sharing what you know and whatever surplus you have. I like to think it helps that we are incomers and get on with everyone – a little like Switzerland, but with chickens instead of cuckoo clocks.Out the gate go butternut squashes, the occasional session of occasionally successful computer-related support, green beans, plant cuttings and spare eggs. (I should declare here that, although I love having the

Perfect for a spring Sunday lunch or stylish supper this quick and easy lamb dish is full of flavor. Choose a couple of meaty racks of lamb from a good butcher and score the layers of fat before spreading with the harissa paste. Serve with a cooling garlic and mint yoghurt sauce.Serves 4 - ready in 1 hour• 1 tbsp harissa paste (see Tip) • 2 trimmed racks of lamb, each with 6 bones • 2 red onions, peeled and cut into slim wedges • 50g butter • 225g basmati rice, rinsed and drained • 1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed • 750ml vegetable stock • Generous pinch saffron strands • 50g sultanas • 40g flaked almonds, lightly toasted • 2 tbsp pomegranate seeds Tip: Harissa paste is a fiery hot North African blend of red chilli peppers and spices – just a little goes a long way so use sparingly. You’ll find it in small jars near the dried herb and spice sections in most large supermarkets.

Preheat the oven to 200C, 400F, Gas 6. Spread the harissa paste over the lamb racks. Place the racks in an

Grow Your Own Vegby Pippa GreenwoodAs the new gardening year is upon us, why not have a go at growing your own veg because it doesn’t need to be difficult and has the potential to be one of the most productive and fun things you’ve ever done. Home grown food tastes better, uses little if any air miles, can save you a packet and is enormously rewarding because you’re getting the top end of the market produce. Remember to grow what you like and what your garden can grow well - this may take some experimenting, but don’t be afraid to admit that some things are trickier than others in your plot.If you’re an organic gardener or you simply want to produce pesticide free vegetables, you might need to spend more time thinking about what to grow and how you can best nurture it so that pests, diseases and other problems take a back seat. *Seed and plant catalogues are now more likely to let you know which varieties are relatively pest or disease resistant. *You can also encourage some of the naturally occurring insects that parasite or predate upon the garden pests, or bigger animals such as frogs, toads, hedgehogs and many birds. Insects include: Ladybirds: The larvae and the adults both consume huge numbers of aphids.Lacewings: The young or larvae are brilliant predators, eating mainly aphids, but also eating other pests such as thrips and eggs of moths.Hoverflies: The soft-bodied yellowy grey larvae are great aphid eaters, a single one eating up to fifty in a day, nearing 1,000 in its lifetime.Ground beetles: Often seen scuttling off at speed when you move pots, low-growing plants or loose slabs, they are mostly black and often shiny and are brilliant predators of many pests including slugs, vineweevils and some insect eggs.Solitary wasps: Some feed their larvae on aphids, weevils and other insects. Some of these may already be in your garden, but by growing some suitable plants you can really build up their numbers. On the whole the simple, non-double varieties are the most insect friendly, so try some of these:*Phacelia: A hardy annual with bluish perfumed flowers, perfect for direct sowing.*Limnanthes douglasii (the poached egg plant): This yellow and white flowered hardy annual is loved by hoverflies.*Eschscholzia (the Californian poppy): This pretty yellow, orange and cream flowered plant can be direct sown and thrives in sunny well-drained sites.

*Iberis (candytufts): One of the easiest hardy annuals, it has readily available pollen and nectar, perfect for many beneficial insects. The rewards are plentiful - a regular supply of superbly tasty vegetables, picked when ripened to perfection (not just to make them last longer on the supermarket shelf ), gathered as and when you need them and in the quantities you need (cutting down on wastage) plus you can choose the varieties you find tastiest. Why not grow some great vegetables in 2013? Go to www.pippagreenwood.com and sign up for ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ – choose from a fantastic selection of vegetables sent to you at just the right time for planting and each week you receive an email from her telling you all you need to know to ensure great results. You can also sign up for Pippa’s newsletter and receive a free e-book on organic gardening, and buy a hand-picked selection of garden products. VVoice

World-class cycling returns to KingstonHot on the wheels of the amazing Olympic Games cycle races which came through Kingston in 2012, some of the best road cyclists in the world will be racing through the streets of London and Surrey in August 2013 - this time joined by 20,000 amateurs. Kingston residents and businesses are being urged to be prepared and plan ahead for the arrival of the Prudential RideLondon - a new world-class annual two-day cycling festival developed by the Mayor of London and his agencies in partnership with Surrey County Council as part of the Olympic legacy. The festival will take place on Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 August and will feature a series of events for amateur, club, world elite, youth and hand cyclists. In cycling’s answer to the London Marathon, the RideLondon 100 will see 20,000 amateur cyclists pass through Kingston as they take part in a 100-mile challenge on the same closed roads which will feature 150 professional cyclists race as they take part in the Ride London Classic later in the day. The best action will be broadcast live on TV both in the UK and internationally. RideLondon is a key part of the London 2012 Games

Legacy Programme and a global charity fundraising event. The event will encourage participation in sport - especially cycling locally, while putting Kingston back on the international stage as people across the world watch the elite cyclists compete. Roads in the borough will be closed for substantial periods of time on race day (Sunday 4 August). Preparations are unlikely to have an impact on traffic the day before, so people will be able to go about their business as usual. On 4 August, transport surrounding the route will be affected by road closures and parking suspensions. Road closures will be in place from 5:30am on the day and will give limited access in and around the route, which will be fully looked after by trained marshalls. What the race schedule will mean for Kingston on the day6:50am to 10am 20,000 cyclists will travel through the north side of Kingston from Richmond Park along Queen’s Road, Kingston Hill, London Road, Cromwell Road, Richmond Road, Sopwith Way, Wood Street, Horse Fair and Kingston Bridge on their way to Surrey.9:30am to 3pm The 20,000 cyclists will return to the borough on their return leg to central London, travelling through the south side of Kingston by Portsmouth Road, High Street, Eden Street, Clarence Street, Fairfield North, London Road and Coombe Road. 1:15pm to 1:45pm 150 professional cyclists and support vehicles will pass through Kingston on the north side on their way to Surrey, using the same outbound route as outlined above.4:45pm – 5:45pm Professional cyclists and support vehicles will pass through Kingston on the south side on their return to central London using the same inbound route as outlined above. Roads will then be fully opened as soon as it is safe to do so. Roy Thompson, Director of Place at Kingston Council, said: “It’s really exciting for the borough to be hosting yet another world-class sporting event, and showing that we are proud of our Olympic legacy. We will have the eyes of the world on Kingston yet again for this fantastic event. “Having said that, we recognise that the race will cause traffic disruption, with the route being closed for much of the day. As we did with the Olympic cycling events, the Council is working very closely with its partners and RideLondon to do all we can to minimise this in the months leading up to the event. There will be a lot of useful information on the Council and RideLondon web sites to help residents plan their weekend around the event. “It is important to remember that Kingston town centre will still be open for business so I would like to urge residents to make the most of the event by coming into Kingston and watching the races with family and friends. There will be lots of other events and activities taking place in the town centre to help you make the most of the day, and you will still be able to get a bus or train into Kingston – or you could even cycle into town.”For more information about Prudential RideLondon, visit www.PrudentialRideLondon.co.uk where you can find route maps and detailed FAQs about the event. Regular updates will also be posted on Twitter @Ride_London and on www.facebook.com/RideLondon VVoice

ClubsNew Malden Jazz Club

Who said Traditional Jazz is dead? It most certainly is not in New Malden - or perhaps more accurately in Old Malden, where the New Malden Jazz Club holds its weekly meetings at The Manor, which is next to Malden Manor station. The club has been in existence for many years, starting life in the Railway Tavern (now The Glasshouse), moving to the Brewster (now The Willow Tree), and thence to The Berrylands Hotel in Surbiton before moving to its current home, where it has been comfortably established for several years. The regular band is the Magna Jazz Band, which has had a long and varied career since its formation in the middle 1950s by clarinettist Brian White. The band is

hugely experienced and has featured countless American musicians as guest stars during the lifetime of the club, and its members are known all over the world, thanks to personal visits and the many recordings they have made. They enjoy themselves so much that they would almost play for nothing, but of course they do incur expenses and so there is an admission charge. You will find that drinks are at normal pub prices. There is a warm atmosphere at The Manor, and the club members are always happy to welcome new friends into the family. The sessions are every

Thursday, with the band kicking off the music at 8.30. Why not go along and enjoy? VVoiceBrian White, leader

Safer Neighbourhoods New Sergeant for Beverley and Coombe ValeMy name is Dan Turner and I have recently been appointed as the Sergeant in charge of the Beverley and Coombe Vale Safer Neighbourhood teams. I have been with the Borough of Kingston for over three years and I was previously with the Tudor ward team.I am looking forward to introducing myself to as many residents as possible at our various street meetings and forthcoming events. My colleague, Sergeant Nick Ellis, has now moved to work with our youth teams and schools around the Borough and will no doubt be in contact with many ward residents who are involved in these areas. I would like to use this opportunity to highlight our latest awareness campaign, launched on March 20, around courier fraud which is primarily targeting people in their 70s and who, as a result, have been suffering average losses of around £4,000. This particular type of fraud targeting elderly people is on the increase across London. Our aim is to raise awareness and provide some key crime prevention

messages to the elderly and their circle of support - friends, family, and neighbours. The Method 1) The method varies but essentially involves a victim being telephoned (cold -called) by a suspect who alleges to be someone of authority (eg, from the police, bank, Serious Fraud Office). The suspect tells the victim there is a problem with their bank account (like it has been compromised) and that their bank card must be collected. 2) If the victim is unconvinced that the call is genuine they are instructed to hang up and call a genuine number – such as 999 or the telephone number on the rear of their bank card. However, the suspect keeps the telephone line open and so the call goes straight back to the fraudster who then deals with any subsequent call, convincing the victim of their authenticity.

ALARMSAll of our systems are individually surveyed and specified to meet your requirements, whether it is a small basic house alarm to a large commercial building.

INTERCOMSIntegrated audio or video door entry intercom systems enable you to monitor, control and verify access any areas of the premises.

CCTVNo matter how big or small your premises are, we offer a wide range of CCTV systems from basic singular cameras with monitors to complex security systems and networking.

Hudson Security are a company that specialises in all types of security systems from a small house alarm to a commercial high-tech Intergrated access control system.

3) The victim is then content to reveal their bank details, namely the PIN.4) An often unwitting courier or taxi driver is sent to collect the victim’s card. The card is delivered to a second suspect, who then passes it on to the fraudster. The fraudster then empties the bank account.

Key Messages We would like to advise that you should never give anyone your PIN or bank card – the police and banks will never ask for them. If you are a cabbie or courier do be wary of about collecting and delivering packages from elderly people as you may be assisting in a criminal offence. If in doubt check it out or contact the police. If you have been a victim call the police on 101 or in an emergency by dialling 999.

“You know you are getting old when it takes too much effort to procrastinate” Anon

Busy Doing Nothing So sorry there was no Dad’s Diary last month, that was the month when I was going to write it in good time but I kept putting it off, making cups of tea, toasting crumpets or doing something equally important. Apparently I’m not alone, there have been not one but two surveys recently that show that we Britons are really really good at procrastination. The results are really interesting and if I get around to it I’ll share them with you next month - the average Briton spends more than three years of their lives putting off tasks.

Trying To Find Lots Of Things Not To Do The activities we are most keen to avoid are DIY; other domestic chores such as laundry, ironing and cleaning; as well as dealing with bills and household admin. Popular delaying tactics included having a cup of tea, having a smoke, pausing for a bite to eat and trips to the bathroom. In a survey of one thousand men and women, eighty seven percent said they regularly put off tasks until the last possible moment. It is further claimed we procrastinate for an average of one hour and seventeen minutes each day - or just under nine hours a week. That means we each spend more than nineteen full days each year avoiding essential tasks, which over a lifetime stretches out to one thousand, one hundred and forty days.

We’re Busy Going NowhereIt would appear that as a nation we are world class at putting jobs off until the very last minute and it’s quite ingenious how we are able to come up with excuse after excuse to convince ourselves we are too busy.Shockingly, we priortise of tea, cigarette and lunch breaks over the job that needs to be completed. Suddenly other non-essential tasks such as watering plants and sorting out the sock draw became urgent priorities ahead of the essential task we should be concentrating on.

We’d Like To Be Unhappy Psychology Today identifies three basic types of procrastinators:1. Thrill-seekers, who wait to the last minute for the euphoric rush.2. Avoiders, who may be avoiding fear of failure or even fear of success but in either case are very concerned

with what others think of them; they would rather have others think they lack effort than ability.3. Decisional procrastinators, who cannot make a decision. Not making a decision absolves procrastinators of responsibility for the outcome of events.

But We Never Do Have The Time. I’m not sure which of these three applies to me but I do know that I’m going to check my emails and make a cup of tea before I decide – tomorrow. VVoice
