PERSPECTIVES

Our Union, home to allnational races

* Oppose those relying on external elements, acting as stooges, holding negative views* Oppose those trying to jeopardize stability of the State and progress of the nation* Oppose foreign nations interfering in internal affairs of the State* Crush all internal and external destructive elements as the common enemy

People’s Desire

A significant characteristics ofMyanmar is that it is home to all national racesincluding Kachin, Kayah, Kayin, Chin, Bamar,Mon, Rakhine and Shan. During the thousand-year-old history, the national races have beenliving in harmony and amity.

The colonialists waged aggressive warsagainst Myanmar and occupied her unjustly. The occupiers practiced the divided-and-rulepolicy in administering the plains, the states andhill regions. Thanks to the visionary nationalrace leaders, Myanmar was able to sign thePanglong Agreement, an important contributionto our independence struggle.

Deep in the soul of our national races havebeen the patriotism and Union Spirit since yore.During the independence struggle, anti-colonialist spirit was spreading in the wholecountry. All the national people with their finetradition of consolidated unity and patriotismand nationalistic fervour fought back thecolonialists and Fascists till Myanmar regainedher independence and sovereignty.

The 63rd Anniversary of the Union Daywhich was conceived in Panglong falls on 12February 2010. The mother country has seenthe passing of time and a lot of changes. We arenow building a new peaceful, modern anddeveloped democratic nation in accord with theeternal truth or the national policy – non-disintegration of the Union; non-disintegrationof national solidarity; and perpetuation ofsovereignty.

There will be peace and stability in thecountry only if there is national unity, followedby the emergence of a modern and developednation. A national race or a portion of theterritory shall not be separated from the Union. So all are duty bound to keep the Union intact. We will have to ward off all internal and externalattempts to harm peace and stability anddevelopment and modernization undertakingswith the strength of national solidarity.

Union Spirit is ever flourishing in thehearts of our national brethren. We will have topreserve our fine traditions of striving fornational peace and progress through unity andsafeguarding our Union in which we are livingin harmony for its perpetuation.

6 THE NEW LIGHT OF MYANMAR Thursday, 11 February, 2010

Our country stood tall in the internationalcommunity as a sovereign nation known as the Unionof Myanmar for thousands of years on account of theconsolidated unity of all national races. Since thetimes of monarchs, national races have worked togetherwith complete unity for perpetuation of sovereigntyand peace. However, once our nation fell under colonialyoke in consequence of the colonialists’ plots to sowhatred among national brethren, using force to bullythe nation, and invasion with armed superiority, whichwas a painful memory for the people. The nation lostmassive natural resources, and the-then people suffereduntold miseries. The nation still has to cope withinternal armed insurgency and grave threats to thesovereignty of the Union due to the evil legacydeliberately left by the colonialists.

In successive periods, national races havepreserved a fine tradition of sharing joys and sorrows. The morale and vigour of the people is the strengthof the nation. It was an extremely formidablechallenge faced by the people to build consolidatednational unity in the Union throughout the history.National races had great tenacity and resilience inbraving and tackling various forms of internal andexternal acts of sabotage, so the nation could standtall as a sovereign independent land in the world.

The people have to take invaluable lessons from

the past bitter experiences in an effort to generate aprosperous future for the nation. They are also undera national duty to make sure that the nation will neverface such evil miseries again. Today in the world it issaid to focus on peaceful coexistence. However, inpractice, the world has come under unfair treatments, invasions, and interference in internal affairs of othercountries. In particular, today’s world incidents haverevealed that certain powers are resorting to varioustactics to have domination and political hegemonyover developing countries.

Over 100 years into the colonial rule, Myanmarmanaged to regain independence, sacrificing lives ofa countless number of its people. However, theindependence was closely followed by multicolouredinsurgency with disintegration of national solidaritysparked by the evil legacy the colonialists left onpurpose. Because of the internal armed strife, successive governments were in no position to carryout national development tasks in an effective wayand had to concentrate most of their attention onState stability, community peace, and national unity.Owing to the persistence of the internal armedinsurgency, the nation faced economic slump andwas far from development.

Another point is that Myanmar is rich in naturalresources and occupies strategic location in terms ofgeopolitics, thus attracting covetous eyes from certainpowerful countries. Therefore, they have been tryingfor long to manipulate and to put our country undertheir thumb. Their schemes will never come to fruitionso long as national races remain united, and theTatmadaw and the people work together in harmony. So, the entire people have to be constantly vigilantagainst different forms of attempts internal and externalanti-government groups have been making toundermine national solidarity and to deceive them intomisunderstanding the government.

In the post-independence period, Myanmar triedthe multiparty democracy system. However, therewas no cooperation and unity between political partiesand party leaders. They focused all their efforts ontheir plans for their parties and leaders to come topower. Many profound historic evidences show thatthe people therefore had to deal with a large diversityof hardships. Their power-craving sense broke theirparties into warring factions. So, destabilization andconflicts were rampant across the nation, and thenation was standing on the edge of collapse severaltimes, which is an unforgettable lesson for youngergenerations. According to the past evidences, whateversystem the nation practises, national unity and UnionSpirit are of great importance for the future of a unioncountry.

Having a glimpse of the nation’s history, we cannotice the important role the Tatmadaw played. TheTatmadaw never failed to save the motherland andtake State responsibilities in times of emergency such

as whenever the nation was on the verge of civil warstemming from armed conflicts, the nation washovering on the point of collapse due to the attemptsto secede from the Union, and the nation cameunder the interference in the internal affairs bypowerful countries. In addition, it had to sacrificelives of its many members, to safeguard nationalinterest and ensure perpetuation of the nation as anational duty.

The Tatmadaw has been carrying out demandingtasks from dawn to dusk such as suppression ofinternal and external threats, building national unity, restoration of State stability and community peaceand ensuring perpetuation of sovereignty, and nationaldevelopment undertakings.

Without State stability and peace, nationaldevelopment is impossible. It is common knowledgethat saboteurs have been committing destructive actssuch as bomb attacks on railroads, roads, pylons, andfactories, and on busy places with the intention ofdisrupting the development tasks.

Therefore, since its assumption of State duties, the Tatmadaw has given top priority to State stability, peace, the rule of law, ensuring secure and smoothtransport, and perpetuation of sovereignty.Taking time, the Tatmadaw government has laid

(from page 6) strong foundations in spite of a variety of disruptions. It is easier said than done to enable the nation enjoydevelopment at that degree. Inspired by theirpessimistic attitude, anti-government groups are foundconstantly chiding the government for whatever itdoes in the national interest. They have hardlyextended a helping hand and cooperation in the tasksfor restoration of peace and stability and nationaldevelopment. To what they give top priority is theircoming to power, not national interest.

After improving the infrastructures to an extentfor national development, the government is in pursuitof the national policy of building a multipartydemocratic nation in compliance with the aspiration ofthe entire people. Now, Myanmar is in its transitionalstage, which is to be tackled with great care. The nationis poised to take a giant step towards democracy. So,the entire people on their part are to work together inthe interest of the nation, to build a new nation withconsolidated national unity, and to try with UnionSpirit so as to shape a better future for the nation.

Nonetheless, pessimists stick to their plot tohinder the drive. So, it is required of the people toconsider for whom are they doing so. The people arealso to be aware of the certain foreign countriesbehind the plots to trouble our country and to havetheir wishes fulfilled. They are trying to createopportunities, flattering subversives by praising theirobstructive acts and coercing the government inorder to interfere in the internal affairs of the nation. So, the people have to have a watchful eye on theirattempts.

The multiparty democracy election, the first stagefor democratization, is drawing near. The entirepeople are not to let their goal divert from its course. It is, therefore, important to find out the real intentionof those countries coercing and imposing economicsanctions against our country. The people also haveto beware of the acts of elements aided and abetted bythose countries. In that regard, what is the mostimportant is to elect those who will work for thenation and the people and serve the national interest.

National unity is the only thing with which thepeople can surmount all forms of destructive acts. Inother words, the strength of the nation is theconsolidated unity of all the national people in theUnion. If weak in certain points, the nation will begetting weak. The people should take a lesson that thenation can get weaker, having its parts separatedfrom it one after another, as evidenced by the untoldmiseries being faced by many other countries. Unitedwe stand, and divided we fall. If with disintegrationof national solidarity, the country may lose its future.

Thus, internal and external elements are workingin complicity in their schemes to hamperdemocratization process and destabilize the nation. They are trying to sow dissension among nationalbrethren, and drive a wedge between the Tatmadawand the people. More than that, they are resorting toall possible ways to break up the Tatmadaw. TheTatmadaw is responsible for ensuring State stability, peace and perpetuation of sovereignty. The Tatmadawdefends the nation against dangers and threats. It is anotable point that if the Tatmadaw is divided, it willno longer be able to ward off such threats, and thenation will be on the edge of abyss. Some are making

the role of the Tatmadaw dim by putting all the blameon it, harbouring grudge and animosity. In reality, only when the Tatmadaw is strong, so will the nation. The collapse of the Tatmadaw will lead to that of thenation. Therefore, I would say those who are trying todisintegrate the Tatmadaw are disregarding the interestof the nation and the people.

More or less, every country has their internalproblems. Some deal with their internal issues withtheir own strength, while some have their internalaffairs interfered by alien countries. In many countries, the people are in great troubles due to interference ofother countries. The most appropriate and best way isthat the nations concerned address their issues on their

own. To be able to cope with such issues, the entirepeople should remain harmonious and work incollaboration. Complying with the desire of themajority is in consistence with democratic practice, and that can push the nation on track for development.Today, what the people of us should do best is to createa prosperous future for the nation by working hard fornational development, based on the present conditions.

Therefore, I would like to call on the entire peopleto continue to work steadfastly for emergence of apeaceful, modern and developed democratic nation, grappling with acts of internal and external saboteursin line with the five objectives of the 63rd AnniversaryUnion Day.

confluence of the MaykhaRiver and the Malikha River,Bala Min Htin Bridgespanning the AyeyawadyRiver and statues of Kachinnationals. Viewing thepleasant senses there, I cameto feel as though I were reallyin Kachin State.

That evoked thememories of my visit toKachin State in which Ihappened to take a strollalong Bala Min Htin Bridgeon the Ayeyawady River, linking Myitkyina on thewest bank and Waingmawon the east bank. Due to thefacility that was put intocommission on 14November 1998, KachinState has enjoyed smoothtransport in it. Also ondisplay were the booths ofPutao, and Myitkyina, along

Bad liquor kills eight onIndonesia’s Java island

JAKARTA, 10 Feb—Indonesian police say eight peo-ple have died after drinking liquor laced with methanolon the country’s main island of Java.

Police Maj Syaiful Anwar said on Tuesday the vic-tims bought the drink from the same stall on Friday.

No one has been arrested. Police have questionedthe street vendor who sold the alcohol in the centralcity of Yogyakarta. Methanol can be used for fuel andis an ingredient in formaldehyde, plastics and paints.

Alcohol is heavily taxed in Indonesia, meaning highprices that have spawned a huge black market for wineand liquor. Last year 25 people died in two weeks afterconsuming a homemade liquor laced with methanol onIndonesia’s resort islands of Bali and Lombok.—Internet

DUBAI, 10 Feb—Visitors on the obser-vation deck of the world’s tallest towerheard a loud boom, then saw dust thatlooked like smoke seeping through acrack in an elevator door 124 floors abovethe ground. Because the elevator was apparentlystuck between floors, rescuers had to dropa ladder into the shaft so those insidecould crawl out. On the observation deck, about 60 more people were stranded andsome began to panic.
