THE TURIN-LYON: A GREAT EUROPEAN PROJECT TORINO, NETLIPSE MEETING
The regions along the Mediterranean Corridor represent an important socio-economic area within the EU. The new railway link Lyon-Turin, with a 57 km base tunnel, is highly strategic, because it is the main missing link connecting southwestern Europe with Central and Eastern European Countries.

THE TURIN-LYON: A GREAT EUROPEAN PROJECT TORINO, NETLIPSE MEETING
Freight traffic between France and Italy is relevant, but the rail mode is able to catch only a little part of it: 9,1% of the total, compared with 32,3% of the axis German and 68,6% of the Swiss one (2014 data). This is because of the constraints, in terms of time and costs, associated to the old railway line. In the Italy-France corridor freight flows are presently confined to road transport or deviated to other routes, generating additional costs.
…The old Fréjus railway does not match the demand

PRIORITY Transport is of key importance to enable people to travel, to supply the necessary goods for living and to provide access to services.
THE TURIN-LYON: A GREAT EUROPEAN PROJECT TORINO, NETLIPSE MEETING
STRATEGY - Appropriate measures to limit the negative impacts of transport, including the emission of greenhouse gases, have to be implemented. This requires: • Shifting the transport of goods from road to rail • Promoting the use of combined transport such as “rolling motorways” • Strengthening and promoting all forms of public transport of passengers • Supporting all forms of soft mobility (electric cars, bicycle lanes)

TORINO
The debat with local communities
The new project of the Turin-Lyon line is radically different from the one (left bank of the Dora river) of 2005, contested by the Susa Valley’s Community.
After examination of 11 possible options, the Observatory has worked with all the municipalities by identifying a new path (right bank of the Dora river).
A new project to meet the Community needs
