SEAT IS WORKING TO ACHIEVE A GREAT GOAL, TO BECOME IN 2025 THE FIRST SUSTAINABILITY AUTOMOBILE MANUFACTURER IN SPAIN, ACHIEVING THAT EVERY NEW MODEL GENERATION IS BETWEEN 10 AND 15 % MORE EFFICIENT THAN THE PREVIOUS ONE.
To give transparency to this commitment, SEAT presents the technical environmental information of the new ATECA, this information comprises a fi rst view of the environmental impact of the new model to compare in a future the model variants object of study with its successor and a summary of its most important environmental characteristics, represented in a graphical diagram of the vehicle.
LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT
The study of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) has been realized according to the ISO 14040 standard, taking into account the relevant materials and the necessary energy ways to carry out the production, use (included the supply of fuel and emissions during driving) and End of Life treatment (recovery, recycling and disposal), the process called “Cradle to Grave”.
The vehicle maintenance and the credits for the avoided production of materials in another product system after recycling are not part of the scope of examination.
The process carried out has been realized according to the methodology of performing LCAs of the Volkswagen Group, which is based on the performance of the method and the requirements of the ISO 14040 and ISO 14044 standards. This LCA study has been certifi ed by the TÜV Rheinland.
For the achievement of the environmental balance, the amount of raw materials required, the consumption and the energy consumed throughout the whole life cycle of the vehicle are collected. This information is basic to assess its environmental impacts, such as, the gas of greenhouse effect (global warming potential), photochemical smog (human health and ecosystems involvement), acidifi cation (damage to forests, buildings, death of fi sh...), depletion impacts of the ozone layer (destruction of protection against UV radiation) and the eutrophication (high production of nutrients and reduction of O2), being the most relevant environmental impacts in the automobile industry.
The model variants object of study are Model Year 2016, and have been chosen according the highest sales forecast (as forecast in June 2015) and a “Reference” equipment, so a 5D 1.6l TDI CR (St/St), 85 kW, 6-Manual, and a 5D 1.0l TSI (St/St), 85 kW, 6-Manual.
RESULTS AND EVALUATIONS
The impact of the gases of greenhouse effect (CO2-Equivalent, CO2e)

This graph shows the impact of the greenhouse gas effect throughout the Life Cycle, of the both model variants object of study. The calculations measured in tons of CO2e (unit of reference of greenhouse gases effect) for a trip distance of 200.000 km (travel distance according to the New European Driving Cycle and the model segment), give us a result of a 33,8 t CO2e from the Otto model variant and a 29,7 t CO2e from Diesel model variant during the phases of production, use and End of Life treatment.
Comparison between the evaluated environmental impacts, throughout the life cycle for each model variant object of study
In the absence of previous models, the results are analyzed for the two engines Otto 1.0l TSI and 1.6l TDI Diesel.
Related to the normalized graphics, (without comparing the vehicle models under study), we can observe that the most signifi cant environmental impact is the global warming potential (for 1.0l TSI and for 1.6l TDI) and the lower is the eutrophication. In regard to the photochemical smog OCP), it has a higher relevance in the 1.0l TDI model. The acidifi cation has the same tendency in both model variants, and the ozone depletion impact results are not representative, for this reason, they are not considered.
The environmental performance of the ATECA, it is due mainly to a reduction of weight and an improvement of the effi ciency of our engines, and as a result, there is obtained a reduction of the fuel consumption, of the emission of CO2, of the pollutant gases and reduction the use of raw materials.
