Umpire’s Whistle

Contact: [email protected]

Hi Guys,

So it’s my turn to cover the umpires whis-

tle this month and I thought I’d touch on

some basic rules when it comes to umpir-

ing.

When umpiring (at tournament level)

both umpires need to be in whites as

well as riding boots, no umpire is al-

lowed to umpire in casual shoes.

Two goal judges need to be behind the

goal posts prior to the game starting,

and ONLY TWO. Please make sure you

have goal judges ready prior to the

start of the game to save time.

No horses are allowed behind the goal

posts.

At the start of the game both umpires

will have a chat to the players to make

sure everyone is on the same page with

regards to the rules, this doesn’t qualify

as a chat “Ok you guys all know the

rules so let’s keep it clean and have

fun”.

For new umpires who haven’t umpired

before these are the things that need to be

checked before the start of the game,

Whips have flaps

Spurs don’t have any sharp points

Players have surcingle’s and breast-

plates on their saddles

Ask if there are any left handed players

Players would have supplied a suitable

ball and umpires ponies

Two goal judges behind each set of

goal posts – no under 16’s

Table has two officials ready, one to

keep score and a timekeeper.

Briefly chat to players regarding rules

i.e. dangerous riding, stick swinging,

crossing behind and in front of other

horses etc.

Remember guys everyone makes mistakes

so don’t be scared to blow the whistle

FROM THE SIDELINE Natal Champs After all these years, I am always amazed at the reception I get from everyone af-ter being out of polocrosse for so long. Whilst I enjoy a good game of rugby, the multiple skills exhibited by players, cou-pled with the natural competitiveness of horses and the fact all the action (of which there is plenty) takes place close to you and not far away on the other side of the field, still makes polocrosse the greatest game of all! It was great for me to see many “pee wees” playing, with quiet a few, being third generation players. Whilst not all that serious in the context of where it occurred, with very few out-siders present, what happened in the A Division final around the dispute with the Umpires was not acceptable. And don’t blame the Umpires – consistent fouling and back chat made it very difficult for them! Also guys, the purposeful delays by team mates to eat up the playing time when one section member was sidelined by the umpires for 2 minutes, did not look good. Come on chaps – if you’re fouled, either forget it or let the captain speak to the umpires between chukkas. Alternatively wait for an appropriate opportunity to take revenge – but don’t cry or argue! To Bishopstowe – thanks again for a lovely tournament. Just organise less wind and dust next time. Regards,

Rad

Our team will be keeping

the cup at World Cup

2015 !! A very big thank

you to all the committee

forts are commendable!!
