The Northern Flèche
A French Line regiment (in blue over-trousers) occupies the Flèche. It had tried to advance further but had been repulsed by Russian Grenadiers. They
are formed in a ‘line’ formation of three rows across the open rear of the Flèche. The green wagons are Russian ammunition carriages.
They are now subject to column assault by 27th Division’s
Tarnopol regiment. The regiment had just fended off a
cavalry attack by Württemberg Chevaulegers and French
Chasseurs
Both armies used ‘column’ formations extensively (where the
frontage of the force is relatively narrow). It was
relatively easy to manoeuvre and more easily defended
against cavalry but prone to producing greater casualties
from artillery shots.
The French had fired a volley just prior to the scene
displayed. The Russian doctrine of ‘the bayonet’ meant their
over-reliance on that weapon
