Steven Titmus is a solicitor in Townsville who heard about the YWAM Medical Ship and decided to help out! Having done 15 marathons in the past, he wanted to challenge himself to go to the next level. He took the 100km Ultra-marathon challenge to raise funds for three charities – one of those being the YWAM Medical Ship.

Steven chose the YWAM Medical Ship because, “I like the two-fold nature … Firstly it provides important medical help to people in need. And secondly, just as importantly, it can help young people to gain a sense of purpose through helping others.”

The Ultra-marathon was a team event, with each team member to complete the full 100km distance. Steven’s team mate was Wayne Crase. Their adventure took them up and down hills with overall altitude change equivalent to climbing Mt Bartle Frere, the highest peak in Queensland. Other highlights included following an eight foot high barbed wire boundary fence to a police camp at night, whilst wading through ankle deep sludge, and crashing a wedding that was happening along their course!

When they finally made it to the finish, it had taken them 18 hours and 10 min, they were 7th out of around 55 teams of runners, and Steven had raised almost $5000!

The Medical Ship’s Patron Honourable Mike Reynolds said that there were critical and immediate needs in the Western Province where a collaborative approach by the Queensland, Australia and PNG Governments was absolutely essential.

“We believe that the YWAM Medical Ship can play a pivotal role in urgent medical work in the Western Province and importantly assist in the control of diseases such as Tuberculosis, Malaria and HIV Aids.”
