Upcoming Baronial Progress

August 8/18 Fall Crown Tourney (Darach) 8/25 Leodamus of Thebes Tourney

From the Baron & Baroness

P A G E 3

Witam, Calafia! July went passed very quickly, starting with Caidian Prize Tourney where we had a great time. Kate & I would once

again like to thank you for your support at Council for the dona-tion to help out the Kingdom. Their Majesties were very grateful. The demos at ComicCon seemed to be a hit all around & found itself on G4 with a very favorable review. Lyondemere Anniversary allowed us to relax & enjoy the company of our Cousins at their event. And Caid Rapier Open had around fifty fencers enjoying the day, including the newest authorized fencer, His Royal Majesty, who spent the day with a full dance card. Whilst TRMs are off to show the rest of the Known World what Caid can bring to Pennsic, we will take a couple of weeks off to rest up before Fall Crown happens up in Darach where we will watch to see who will be next in line to rule our fair kingdom. And we will end the month of August at home at Leodamus of Thebes to celebrate one of Calafia’s own from the times before Caid was a Kingdom. We look forward to seeing you all at Crown & Leoda-mus. Until we met again within the Dream, we remain Yours in Service.

Mission Viejo Book Festival Demo October 14, 2012

Caid has been invited by the Mission Viejo Library to provide a massive demo on Sunday, October 14, 2012. This is the Sunday after Great West-ern War. The demo is part of the library's annual book festival which typi-cally hosts between 3,000 and 5,000 attendees from Orange County. This year the theme is the Middle Ages. The location is Oso Viejo Park, 24932 Veterans Way, Mission Viejo, CA 92692, a large, truly lovely location with ample room for pavilions and dragon wings. Guest authors give talks about their books in the Senior Center. The demo is from noon to 6pm, with lunch provided for those presenting the demo as well as a change/break room. If a group can only stay for part of the festival, that is fine. Last year the organizers were asked for more activities for adults. If a demo is able to teach as well as present, the library can provide materials needed for the attendees to try out the activity. They will also provide information copies – you provide the master. The library will also provide aides to pass out materials, so all the presenter has to do is explain, dem-onstrate, and teach. Of course, activities for youth are welcomed as this is an event catering to all who use the public library. The library has expressly asked for bards. They have a small Shakespear-ean stage they will be setting up outside for the use of music, dancing, the Fashion Show, and perhaps some Shakespeare. Would the Kingdom and Baronial Guilds consider joining this demo? Plan-ning is underway now, due to the size of the event. Plus, if your group is able to teach a skill, the library needs to know in advance what materials are needed, including items such as tables and chairs, number that can be taught in a single class, number of people involved in the demo, how long your people can stay, handouts, all that sort of thing, and the number of aides required. Sounds like minions to me! This is an opportunity to showcase both the Society, the Kingdom, and your guilds. Please contact Mistress Eilidh na Tire Dharigh, (the demo coordinator) at <[email protected]>.

The first Sunday of each month is Melee practice and Small Unit Tactics beginning at 12:00 pm. Loaner gear and structured training is available. For more information, contact Wolfel Wizsilberlin [email protected]

Unarmored Combat

Archery Practices are held on Sunday from 10:00am to noon, and on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30pm to 7:00pm. Loaner equipment and basic instruction are available. This is held as part of an Open Archery Practice through UCSD Recreation. There is a $1.00 fee to use the facility. The UCSD Range has been temporarily relocated to the Torrey Pine Gliderport until approximately the end of summer 2011. Parking at the Glider-port site is free. From I-5 exit at Genesee Avenue westbound. At the top of the hill, turn left (south) on to North Torrey Pines Road. Continue two more traffic signals to Torrey Pines Scenic Drive and turn right (west). This is the street just before you reach the Salk Institute. On weekdays, drive about 300 yards and look for an open gate into overflow parking for Salk Institute staff. Turn right (north) and you’ll see a fenced area with green netting on it straight ahead. This is the Archery range. On Sundays, the gate to Salk overflow parking is closed. Instead of turning here, continue westbound until you reach the cul-de-sac at the end of Torrey Pines Scenic Drive. There is a driveway here on to the dirt leading to the Gliderport building. Once you’re on to the dirt curve to your right (east) and approach the range of the graded surface of the gliderport runway. Directions are available online at http://archery.ucsd.edu/directions.html . The range is the fenced outline just next to the ‘CA84’ marker on the aerial photo.
