Welcome to the Clarenbridge Oyster Festival 2011. It is both a pleasure and an honour to welcome you to our festival which is in it’s 57th year and still going strong.
For centuries our local oyster fishermen have grown and harvested native Clarenbridge oysters or ‘Ostrea edulis’ in Dunbulcan Bay. Their expertise and the shallow waters of Dunbulcan Bay make the Clarenbridge oyster one of the most sought after delicacies in the world. Here exists the perfect combination of natural elements required to produce the perfect oyster. Protected in the bay from the full force of the Atlantic storms, the 700 acres of oyster beds also have the ideal mixture of both fresh and seawater, which is so vital for oyster development.
The Clarenbridge Oyster Festival marks the beginning of a new oyster season. We welcome you to our village to savour the atmosphere, sample the gourmet delights and to enjoy the music and festivities all held in the surrounds of our wonderful marquee. We pride ourselves on hosting what is the West of Irelands only marquee oyster festival and hope that you can come along to see for yourself what all the excitement is about!
As a committee we strive to preserve a legacy of 57 years and are most grateful to our loyal sponsors and patrons who continue to support us year on year. Whether you are a ‘seasoned’ attendee or indeed should this be your first visit to Clarenbridge, you are most welcome and will be guaranteed a true ‘Cead Mile Failte’. How better than to begin the lead up to the Wests only marquee oyster festival than by spoiling yourself on Friday 2nd Sept at the Gourmet Food and Fine Wine experience held in the world famous Paddy Burkes. On Saturday 3rd September, why not enjoy the delights of local businesses as you step back in time into a traditional market in the village green at the Clarenbridge Market day. A free event with something for all the family. Many other fringe events are held throughout the festival week which include traditional music nights, art exhibitions and our increasingly popular village window display competition themed for the weekends festivities.
