PARABLES

• What the parables are?

• Parables are a method of speech, in which moral or religious truths are illustrated from the analogy of common experience

• The parables of Jesus recorded in the gospels are unique and remains ever fresh to the readers

• Old Testament rarely have parables (Jud.9: 8-15)

• Jesus taught mainly through parables (Mk.5: 34)

• Example- The parable of the kingdom of heaven (Mat. 13)

THE PARABLES

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PARABLES, THE SIMILE AND

THE METAPHOR

• Mainly in the length of it

• Parables are longer comparatively

• Simile and Metaphors are short and so difficult to define clearly

• “Like a sheep dumb before the sheerer” (Is.53: 7) Is a simile

• “Ye are the salt of the earth” (Mat.5: 13) is a metaphor

THE PARABLES(ADVANTAGES)

• Could easily adhere to the memory of the Hearer than long statements

• Preacher could use against any person, who will not listen or admit in a normal way

(Ex. Nathan to David; of the Eve lamb - 2.Sam.12: 1- 12)

• Will listen patiently, condemn soon, but realize later only, he was condemning himself

• Good parables are of Common and familiar things to the hearer, so that he can easily understand.

THE PARABLES

• Jesus mainly taught through parables

Mark 4:33-34 And with many such parables spake he the

word unto them, as they were able to hear it. But without a parable spake he not unto them: and when they were

alone, he expounded all things to his disciples.

• Jesus said;

Mark 4:11 Unto you it is given to know the mystery of

the kingdom of God: but unto them that are without, all these things are done in parables:

THE PARABLES

THE REASON WHY JESUS SPOKE THRU PARABLES

• It was fulfillment of himself (Ps.78: 2; Mat.13: 35)

• Fulfillment of the prophecies (Is.6: 9; Mat.13: 14)

• They were messages of judgment to Israel (Mk.4: 11)

• Spoken in mercy lest they should have greater condemnation (Acts.3: 17)

• Mystery for them; but for us given to know (Mk.4: 11)

Page 7: The Parables

THE PARABLES

• No parables in the Gospel of John

• Parables in Mark and Luke are of the Kingdom of God• Parables in Matthew are of the Kingdom of Heaven

• Seven Parables in Matthew Ch.13 are of the nature of the kingdom of Heaven• Rest of the Five parables shows the manner how to conduct in the Kingdom of Heaven

(Some may disagree the Kingdom of God and Kingdom of Heaven are not different-for the similarities seen in some of the parables)

Argument: Matthew being a Jew avoided the word “God” -is not relevant- in Matthew itself we read “Kingdom of God” (21: 43)

THE PARABLES(Differences)

• THE KINGDOM OF GOD AND KINGDOM OF HEAVEN• The Kingdom of God covers the divine authority over the entire universe of all times, all inclusive of those who are willing to be controlled by God’s will, either angels (holy) or of the saints of the New or the Old Testament.

But the Kingdom of Heaven has as its ultimate purpose of the

setting up of the Kingdom on earth. (1.Cor.15: 24- 25)

• The coming of the king was announced and the way prepared by John the Baptist as forerunner

• Jesus himself preached the approach of the kingdom the repentance was the sign of acceptance for some.

• Since they rejected the king, the kingdom postponed

Page 9: The Parables

THE PARABLES(Differences – Conti..)

THE NATURE OF THE KINGDOM (JEWS EXPECTED AND REASON FOR REJECTION)

• As Son of David on the throne (Jer.23: 5-6)• World wide worship of the Lord (Mal.1: 11)• Re-establishment of world peace (Is. 2: 2-4)• Even nature regaining glory (Is. 35: 1-2)

(Since they rejected the king, kingdom postponed, from

rejection till His coming again to establish the earthly kingdom, is the period of the Kingdom of heaven)

THE PARABLES(Differences) Conti…

What the Kingdom of Heaven is?

• Not the Church- For the Lord add such as should be saved unto the Church (Acts.2: 47)

• Not the kingdom of God- For the entry is through new birth (Born again) Jn. 3: 3; 5

• So the kingdom of Heaven is the present so called “Visible Christendom”

• In the kingdom of Heaven, there is “wheat and tares”, the “good and evil”, the “good and bad fishes”, the “wise and foolish virgins”, but not in the Kingdom of God.

Page 11: The Parables

THE PARABLES(Differences) Conti…

• Entry to Kingdom of God by New birth (Jn.3: 3; 5) Man with out the robe seen in K. o. Heaven (Mat.22: 12)

• Kingdom of God; they presseth unto (Lk.16: 16) Kingdom of heaven take thru violence (Mat.11: 12)

• Kingdom of God not visible (Rom.14: 7) Kingdom of heaven is visible (Rom.14: 7)

• Kingdom of God covers of all the time Kingdom of heaven only this present period

Page 12: The Parables

THE PARABLES(Differences) Contin…

• Romans 14:17 For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.

• Luke 16:16 The law and the prophets were until John: since that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every man presseth into it. ( But not read as entered)

• Luke 18:17 Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child shall in no wise enter

therein. (None can enter by violence)

• Matthew 11:12 And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force.

THE PARABLES(HOW TO INTERPRET)

The correct method to interpret

• Read and observe the parables, and how the Lord gave the interpretations, do the word study.

• Follow the same guideline; interpret with the Bible than putting in own ideas (Inductive study)

• Observe the similarities and differences of similar Parables

• Let interpretations be EXIGETIC and not EISIGESIS

THE PARABLES(THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN)

3. THE MUSTARD SEED (Mat.13: 31-32)

• Similar in Mark 4: 30-32 (Kingdom of God)

(Small beginning but great growth cannot be denied)

• Least of all seeds- Just for familiar reason

• Grown great among the herbs- Spurious growth (Reason rooted to earth; Church to Christ. Col.2: 7)

• Fowls speak of evil (Mat.13: 19; Dan.4: 12)

(Growth of Christendom is with un-regenerated ones; so seems the spurious growth and evil therewith)

THE PARABLES(KINGDOM OF HEAVEN)

4. PARABLE OF THE LEAVEN (Mat.13: 33)

Similar Lk.13: 20; For Leaven shows evil

Paul exhorts us to be away of “malice and wickedness”

The Lord warned us to be careful of:

• L. of Pharisees (Mat.16: 6) Hypocrisy• L. of Sadducees (Mat.16: 6) Unbelief (Acts.23: 8)• L. of Herod (Mk.8: 15) Religion of Worldliness

(Gospel is pure cannot spread by itself; Leaven makes dough; 1.Cor.5: 7; Gal.5: 9 shows only so bigger)

No similar Parable

• Field is the world (Mat.13: 37) • Israel is the Hidden treasure (Ex.19: 5; Ps.135: 4)• Man findeth is Christ (Jn.1: 11)• Now Israel is like treasure hid in the field, Christ’s death of

atonement covers redemption of Israel also; but as a nation

after the church period only (Rom.11: 1; 26)

(Ps note:- By giving all one cannot attain salvation; for salvation

is the free gift, cannot be bought also)

as the fruit of Christ’s sufferings. Eph.5: 25)

• (Similar arguments like previous: un-relevant as Salvation can

not be bought or earned)
