Scaffolding in St. Catharine Church Don’t be alarmed when you enter St. Catharine
Church and find scaffolding. The reason is because a
leak in the roof of the church has been threatening the
integrity of the priceless frescoes over the Blessed
Mother altar, and the roof of the Baptistry It is
estimated that the scaffolding will be in place, and the
work will continue for approximately 3 weeks, and will
not interfere with the regular liturgies and celebrations
at the church.

Dear Parishioners, I repeat the reminder to all members of the
parish, that Catholic Schools week begins on
January 28. This week, Jan 21, in anticipation,
we are celebrating a Sunday Mass at St. Catharine School
at 10.00am and invite the School community and the
parish community to come together and celebrate our
proud school.
When I started working in school as a school psychologist
some 30 years ago, ADD and ADHD were relatively
rarely diagnosed conditions. At that time in clinical
settings the condition was referred to as MBD (Minimal
Brain Dysfunction), and before a diagnosis was made, an
intensive diagnostic process was followed involving
psychological testing, observation of the student at school
and at home, and sometimes an experimental trial of
stimulant medication. Typically it was a very hard sell to
convince parents that their child should be prescribed
Ritalin.
When I retired from school psychology 25 years later, the
shift of attitudes on the part of parents was one of the more
remarkable changes in school psychological practice. It
was not unusual for parents to present themselves to the
school psychologist with a diagnosis from their family
physician, after a brief and relatively perfunctory
interview. The number of children taking medication had
soared to astronomical levels. At that time, between the
years 2007 and 2012 alone, the number of children
prescribed medication for attentional difficulties soared
from 600,000 to over 3.5 million.
By that time some, parents had figured out that the
medications being prescribed could give their children a
potential leg up on other students and gave them a small
boost in competitiveness to obtain entrance to desired
colleges. And with the diagnosis, frequently came
requests, and often demands, for modifications in test
taking that provided another advantage.
Now the role of the school psychologist changed from
convincing parents about the efficacy of appropriately
prescribed medication, to battling parents to prevent their
children from being started on a path that could, and often
did, lead to addiction, and sometimes to suicidal thoughts,
hallucination and anxiety.
Almost forgotten was the truth that even in the case of
children who are correctly diagnosed, there are alternative
ways of dealing with the conditions such as, cognitive
behavioral counseling, social skills training and what
nowadays psychologists refer to as “mindfulness”, which
in Catholic School we would label as prayer and
meditation.
FORMED.Org By this time all registered members of the parish will
have received notification that a subscription has been
taken out for you to a terrific new Catholic website
called FORMED.org. This website has been
irreverently called the Catholic Netflix, and has a
magnificent array of material including movies,
articles, e-books, spiritual and educational programs,
that will enliven your Catholic faith.
Visit FORMED.org on your web browser. Click on

Flu Season
As we area all painfully aware, we are in the middle of the
flu season and this year, it is reported that the flu vaccine
is only 10% effective. We would like to remind people
that shaking hands at the exchange of peace during the
Mass is not the only way of acknowledging fellow
parishioners. A smile, a gesture, a nod of the head,
accompanying the greeting accomplishes as much as
shaking hands. If someone does not offer their hand, do
not take it personally. The person beside you may just be
trying to save you from contamination. Similarly, do not
feel constrained to receive from the cup at Holy
Communion. Jesus is fully and completely present under
the form of both bread and wine. We had discussed
suspending the practice of offering the cup during
Communion, but have decided to let this choice up to the
discretion individual parishioners. Needless to say, do not
receive from the cup if you have a cold or any other
transferrable symptoms. This is always the case but it is
particularly pertinent during this season.
I have seen over the past ten year that I have been pastor
of parishes with Catholic Schools that children with
attention difficulties frequently seem to thrive more
successfully in the more structured and “mindful”
environment of a Catholic School. Here at St. Catharine
School, students are reminded, and given time, to pray
frequently during the day, and to be quiet and reflective
and prayerful through out the day. Not surprisingly, in
this structured setting where expectations are clear and
explicit, and where students are constantly reminded of the
presence of God in their lives and in their school, students
with and without attention difficulties thrive and are
successful.

MEN’S CORNERSTONE IV WEEKEND RETREAT
“AMAZING GRACE: HOW SWEET THE SOUND”, MARCH 9-10, 2018
The Men’s Cornerstone Group at St. Rose Parish
will be holding their annual weekend retreat on
March 9th and 10th at St. Rose in Belmar. Founded
by Bill Harkins in the spring of 2014, Cornerstone
meets monthly with the goal of helping adult men
develop and strengthen their relationship with God by
sharing their experiences with one another on their faith
journey. The retreat is open to adult men from St. Rose
Parish in Belmar as well as our neighboring Cohort 19
parishes – St. Mark’s of Sea Girt, St. Catharine-St.
Margaret of Spring Lake, Ascension of Bradley Beach,
and St. Elizabeth’s of Avon.
Cornerstone IV Weekend is a 26-hour annual retreat
that begins Friday evening at 7pm and ends Saturday
evening with a Family Liturgy. The theme for this
year’s Cornerstone IV Weekend is “Amazing Grace:
How Sweet the Sound”. We put away the cell phones
for the weekend and have a fun-filled “Boy Scout” kind
of weekend, complete with a sleepover at “Hotel St.
Rose!”. In addition to renewing our relationship with
God, we also spend the weekend getting to know others
through small group discussions, fun games, and music.
We also have time for prayer, reflection, and
reconciliation. The Cornerstone Retreat is an extremely
well-planned weekend, with every detail clearly defined
including speakers addressing topics like My
Relationship with God, Growth in Community,
Outreach in Ministry, My Journey with God, and Prayer
and Discipleship.
The retreat concludes on Saturday night with a
celebration of the Liturgy and we invite our families and
friends to the closing mass and reception afterwards.
Men of St. Rose and our fellow Cohort 19 parish
communities -- we would love to have YOU join us
for the Cornerstone IV Weekend Retreat on March
9th and 10th at St. Rose Parish.
Brochures are available in the back of the church and if
you would like more information about the Cornerstone
IV Weekend Retreat or our monthly meetings, please
contact Jack V. Kirnan at (609) 647-5431 or by email
