THE TOUCH OF GOD The reality of sin is many times overemphasized and un-deremphasized. As with much of life, we strive for a bal-anced view. Sin is real but so is mercy. God helps keep the balance between these two concepts. Some of us focus on sin as something which is unforgiv-able. Others may not admit that sin is a reality. Often we can find mercy for large offenses; at other times small faults become larger than they are. Today’s readings speak to all of us who struggle with evil in the world and within ourselves. We are sinful people but not so sinful that God will not approach us. Sin makes us think that we are alone and alienated from God’s creative love. Sin can distort our view of ourselves and the people around us. What are we to do? God’s answer to sin is Jesus Christ. No sin or evil is be-yond the reach of Christ’s power of love. His undying love for the Father destroys all evil. Through His complete and total surrender to God the Father, Christ frees us from our sins. Yes, we are sinners but we are healed by the touch of God.

CHANT AND SACRED MUSIC “Sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs with thankfulness in your hearts to God” (Colossians 3:16). The Church sings because she loves. All the liturgical traditions of the Church have developed forms of chant for the praise of God, the proclamation of the Word, and prayer. Chant is language clothed in the vesture of mel-ody. Chant is born of the word; it elevates the spoken discourse and adapts it to the sacredness of the liturgy. In any Mass, the first things to be sung are the acclamations and simple dialogues. Priests and deacons are responsible for knowing how to sing the parts of the Mass that belong to them. To the people belong, first of all, the unchanging parts easily learned by heart and sung from memory. The Roman Liturgy gives pride of place to Gregorian Chant; other forms of song also have their place, provided that they “express in melody the truth of the Mystery that is celebrated in the Liturgy” (John Paul II, November 22, 2003). “Some parts of the Ordinary of the Mass in Latin, especially the Creed and the Lord’s Prayer, set to the simpler melodies” (GIRM, art. 41) should be fa-miliar to all Catholics. Apart from the chants of the Mass itself, there is room for polyphony and other types of sacred music. The pipe organ, an instrument capable of expressing every-thing from majestic jubilation to humble recollection, holds an esteemed place in our heritage. (These weekly inserts concern the changes in the Mass.)

FAST AND ABSTINENCE AND OTHER

ACTS OF PENANCE FOR LENT The Bishops of the United States prescribe, as minimal obligation, that all persons who are four-teen years of age and older are bound to abstain from eating meat on Ash Wednesday, on all the Fri-days of Lent and Good Friday. Further, all persons eighteen years of age and older, up to and including their fifty-ninth birthday, are bound to fast by limiting themselves to a single full meal on Ash Wednesday and on Good Friday, while the other two meals on those days are to be light. All the faithful are encouraged, when possi-ble, to participate at Mass and to receive the Holy Eucharist daily, to celebrate frequently the Sacra-ment of Penance, to undertake spiritual reading, es-pecially the study of the Sacred Scriptures, and to participate in parish Lenten devotions as well as Lenten education programs. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament is especially recommended. All are encouraged to participate in “Operation Rice Bowl,” which has aided countless hungry persons here in the Archdiocese as well as throughout our nation and our world.

BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT GROUP You are invited to attend a Bereavement Support Group on Wednesday, March 16th, at 7:00 PM at the Trinitarian Motherhouse, 3501 Solly Avenue (next to Father Judge). If interested or for more information please contact Sister Aileen Dolores, MSBT, MSW at 215-335-7500.

SCHOOL NEWS St. Dominic School is very proud to announce that we are “home” to one of 36 Neumann Scholars: Taylor Mertz! Over 845 students sat for this prestigious test; we are hon-ored and humbled by the accomplishments of Taylor! The Connelly Foundation is to be thanked for the incredible do-nation they make to our Catholic Schools. The Neumann Scholar program is only one of their many initiatives! We congratulate her Mom and Dad and every teacher who has guided Taylor throughout her nine years at SDS! We have also received notice that Taylor and Timothy Mertz are two of the finalists in the annual IHM Math Contest! Over 2,600 students from all over the country took the test. Congratulations to Taylor, Tim, and Mrs. Fisher at this great accomplishment! We wish them the best as they prepare for the final test in April.
